the neck cracking is like them "killing" their alterego in the music video. If you will see at the start the scene "good" exo starts cracking their neck but swiftly it changes to the "bad" exo once the necks been cracked.
If I remember correctly they conducted a poll where they asked which Exo-Ls wanted better in the concept Exo or X-Exo. X-Exo won. So they incorporated that the bad guys won in the music video.

Haha so i just binged a whole lot of your EXO reactions and im so happy to see you like them so much! Since you like floor choreography, I wanna recommend Monster... It has a pretty iconic floor choreo scene.
Apart from that, I wanna point out that I really appreciate *your* appreciation of the EXO rap line! SM Entertainment and EXO specifically are well-known for their vocal powerhouses, but SM rappers often gets portrayed in a bad light. And while I agree that labels like JYP on average have a lot more strong rappers, I do think that the technique SM rappers like Chanyeol use is super under-appreciated. So thanks!!
Also! Since you talked about the choreo towards the end - this is actually one of EXOs hardest choreos of all time. They dont really perform it anymore but back when they did, they were always half-dead afterwards lol
I like giving the rappers shout outs because I know everyone talks about EXO's vocals but Chanyeol and Sehun's rapping is important!

What you saw in the "Obsession" MV was that EXO's doppelgangers were actually their alter ego clones and they were using their superpowers, such as Chanyeol with his fire power, Sehun uses his wind power to deflect the arrows, Baekhyun uses his power of light as a saber in the fencing battle, and Suho (the one with red hair) controls water in the room with all the pictures of water, etc. to fight their other selves. If you had let the MV pay until the very end you would have seen the planet on fire in the end of the MV because it's supposed to show how the world is coming to an end as EXO (the good guys in all black) and X-EXO (the evil ones in the colorful outfits with crazy hair and makeup) battle for control, etc. (Each of the members are playing 2 different characters -- there are only 6 people in this MV.)
X-EXO has been created by the evil Red Force and EXO and X-EXO are fighting each other. EXO are trying to prevent X-EXO from taking over and corrupting humanity and X-EXO are trying to stop EXO from finding the Tree of Life and putting the two halves back together and restoring peace, etc.
To truly understand EXO, you need to be aware that EXO debuted in 2012. "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV and it is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept -- and since then, everything SM does branches off from that storyline. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet Exo and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one, if not all of them, using their powers.
Now you also need to know that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. So, to really understand their full origin story, you have to watch both the K and the M version of "Mama", because the EXO-K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the EXO-M version focuses on the M members and their powers.
However, since then, 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group -- short answer to focus on their solo work back in China -- but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 members.) However, now -- because they no longer have enough Chinese members -- they no longer do separate promotions, but they still produce almost all of their MVs and main songs in both Korean and Mandarin, they just now promote all as one group EXO with 9 members. However, in the "Obsession" MV there are only 6 members -- Suho, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, Kai and Sehun -- because 2 of the members -- D.O. and Xiumin -- are on hiatus during this comeback as they serve in the military; and due to the political issues between the Korean and Chinese government, Lay -- their Chinese member -- was unable to participate in activities with the group.
So, each new MV or project from EXO tells another part of the story, and over the years we fans have started to create a timeline and idea of what we think each part of the story is telling us. However, the introduction of "Obsession's" part of the story really threw all of our theories for a loop, and it has made us question everything we previously have ever thought was happening in EXO's storyline.
The MV starts out with the red and blue light because it's supposed to represent how EXO are currently battling with X-EXO and the Red Force for control. In EXO's MVs when you see red light or anything that is red, this represents the Red Force, and when you see blue light or anything that is blue, this is thought to represent EXO. Therefore, when you see red and blue in one scene or purple -- red and blue mixed together make purple -- this is showing how the line between the two sides is being blurred and they are fighting each other, etc.
Since "Obsession," some think maybe EXO has been trapped somewhere from the very beginning and it has been X-EXO that we have been following all along. But I think it's still even more complex than that. I think at times we have been watching EXO, and at times we have been watching X-EXO -- with the release of "Obsession" we have only just discovered that the story hasn't necessarily been showing EXO the whole time.
With the new information provided to us through "Obsession," it also makes me question how Lay fits within the X-EXO/EXO storyline. Maybe he is one of the members who has been able to break free or avoid the Red Forces' control. In Lay's solo MV for "Sheep," the Allen Walker relift version, we see everything burning outside as if an apocalypse is happening. Maybe "Sheep" is showing us the planet burning from Lay's viewpoint, like we see the world burning at the end of the "Obsession" MV.
Also, I believe that the storyline in "Obsession" is connected to SuperM's debut "Jopping" MV storyline. If you pay attention to what Baekhyun and Kai were wearing in "Obsession," those outfits are very similar to the black outfits that Baekhyun and Kai are wearing in the "Jopping" MV. Kai is even wearing the same backpack parachute in both MVs. Which seems to be SM Entertainment's way of making sure we see the connection between those MVs.
Therefore, it is thought that, as part of SuperM's storyline, Baekhyun and Kai have gathered the best of the best of SM's groups -- Taemin from SHINee, Taeyong and Mark from NCT, Ten from WayV and Lucas who is a former member of WayV -- to help them battle the Red Force, and maybe, eventually, take down X-EXO. Just like the Marvel Avengers come together as individual superheroes with their own storylines to create the Avengers and to fight evil, it is thought that SuperM is coming together to create the ultimate supergroup to help EXO fight the evil and corruption inflicted on humanity by the Red Force.
Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we as EXO-L (EXO fans) have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, song lyrics, albums, concert VCRs, choreography and even live performances and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all. And not only are EXO's and SuperM's MVs and storylines connected, but pretty much all of SM's groups have storylines and concepts that connect together, which is designed to become part of one giant graphic novel or movie in the SM Culture Universe.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in EXO's MVs and live performances, here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
EXO-K
💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeon) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho.)
💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light
🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.
🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt), which gives him super strength/force
☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation (Kai means opening as in a door or gateway, so his stage name is meant to symbolize his role in the group.)
🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind
EXO-M
❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost)
🦄 Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the group, he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and rapper -- his power is the ability to heal anything.
🌩 Chen (Kim JongDae) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control thunder/lightning/electricity
(As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M because they are the Korean members of the Chinese group.)
The Chinese members who are no longer part of the group, but are still an important part of EXO's storyline:
🐉 Kris was the leader of EXO-M he was a main rapper and vocalist -- his power was the ability to fly and his spirit animal was a dragon (Kris left the group in April 2014.)
💭 Luhan was a main vocalist and his power was telekinesis (The ability to control things with his mind) (Luhan left the group in October 2014.)
⏰Tao (Z.Tao) was a lead rapper and vocalist and the martial artist of the group, so he did the flips and stunts in the group's routines. His power was the ability to control time (Tao ended activities with EXO in August 2015.)

Yeah this really is an insane song! The whole Obsession album is 🔥 thank you for paying respect to Chanyeol’s insane acapella entry into the rap. Only real rap fans and musicians usually catch how difficult this is to do!!! my only complaint about this is that D.O. and Xiumin are not in it (they were in the military) and Lay was busy building his empire in China. You need to watch the live stages of Obsession there are two versions. Both are crazy crazy good. Exo always shines brightest live
Hi! I thought I could get through their MVs and then check out the live performances but they have such a strong discography I'm realizing I will have to mix it up. Maybe once I've seen a specific MV I can check out the live version after and that way I still learn their material and also appreciate their live skills. Obsession was my first comeback for Kpop before I even knew what a "comeback" was lol! How I came upon EXO, and subsequentially kpop, is an odd one but this song right here is incredibly high on my list of kpop favs. So this was well before I knew of the EXO lore and their "powers" etc. So dang happy you got to this, but of course I'm probably gonna say that on any EXO content you release XD

Obsession, ngl, is my absolute favourite song! Thank you so much for reacting to it... It might sound silly, but it always gets me emotional... because from first look it's a 🔥🔥🔥 track with the choreo, set up, and fits, but the creepy lyrics once you read them in completion is just so meaningful. It's how they begin by indicating that there's someone or something that is obsessed with them, and is affecting them negatively... but right in the end (Chen sings it) they realise that it's been themselves all along. It's like their own dark shadow pulling them back in darkness all the time - and suddenly the lyrics makes sense because only we can know ourselves that intimately and enough to talk that way to ourselves... and the neck cracking kinda symbolised to me how it was time to stop that part of themselves from being that dark/negative voice in their heads... I dunno if this sounds like rubbish, but it just gets me so emotional...
Alsooo... I appreciate you appreciating our rap line so much... these boys are just SO TALENTED! You've said everything perfectly so I can't even add to it, but I know that you will ADORE Chanyeol and Sehun... Chanyeol just sets the bar so high... man raps like it's in his sixth sense, and he can sing beautifully, and he's improved his dancing so much! All this added to the plethora of other talents he has : acoustic guitars, electric guitars, pianos, drums, AND he composes as well... So proud of him... (his individual guide from Cesar Oh will let you see all this, so pleaassee consider doing individual guides as well... you'll get to see the different sides of our boys that way).

When you said “if this was the first EXO song I heard, I’d want to hear more”. That was exactly my experience. Long story short, I looked up D.O. And found “Groove” and Obsession, off the same album, and I was hooked. I had to hear more. That was 2 years ago and I still have to hear more. 😂 suggestion: when you react to Kai’s Mmmh song you should also listen to his Film:Kai. It’s a album teaser but very worthwhile to watch and listen to. Great reaction
