  • Here's my latest Opeth reaction. We have some awesome transitions today, a possible mellotron, probably a key change, and a melodic demon voice? And a special appearance by Bucky Barnes. :D

This song was the Opeth song where I suddenly went from hating growls to loving them, it's the way they tie in with the lyrics I think

Opeth and the Contortionist both shared a roll in me becoming open minded to the growling. Cheers!

The ending of this song is made to make you feel like you're lost in a forest and you can't escape it

The calm part where you ask if the sound you are hearing is a mellotron, it is actually a guitar playing natural harmonics chords. Also, the «Reverie» part is not present despite what the title says. Reverie is played at the end of the previous song (Atonement), It is a short instrumental break before Harlequin Forest begins.
I also wanted to say that I really enjoy your reactions. As an Opeth fan for more than 10 years, its always so fun to «rediscover» the songs through the perception of someone else. I like the fact that you give a lot of comment about what you are thinking throughout the song, contrary to those other reaction channels who only sit silently trough the song and say something like: «yeah Opeth man, like and subscribe for more reactions lol» at the end.

Want a song with multiple multiple sections? Try 'Hessian Peel'. A very smooth build up. That one will give you also at least one 'freak out moment' for sure. Thanks for reacting to this one. Always gives me goosebumps all the way.

Most Opeth songs have 3,400 sections. It makes the mosh pits very confusing.

I'm happy you are going with Burden next. You can't pin down Opeth to any one style. They can do it all masterfully and they are different in every album.

What he seems to be talking about is the traumatized child inside us all, in one form or another. If we do not understand that our emotional triggers are tied to this fearful little beast, then we can quite literally lose our very souls. This damaged child is constantly pining for attention and control. It can only be loved and accepted, but it cannot be allowed to take over our reason and intuition.

As someone else said, the thing you thought was the mellotron was guitar harmonics. The mellotron came right after that though. It's the "wobbly" sounding keyboard right after the key change (you got that right) on the word "hope".

I do not know if they have already told you, but the voice of "demon" and the clean voice is made by the same singer. Mikael Arkefelt.

I do love the songs with the demonic presence injected to it, but I also love everything from Heritage on -- where there's *only* clean vocals and it gets more and more prog oriented as the albums go on. Basically I love all Opeth. That's what I'm saying.
And not for nothing, but it seems like the more you react and listen to them, that it's remarkably likely that you'll be one of those people as well.

  • @_grigoryta

It's all the same guy. Mikael is the only (kinda) founding member of the band. He writes almost everything and he's usually the one singing. There are some songs with Steven Wilson in it singing a chorus or something (i think it's Bleak from the Blackwater Park record). And in some songs there are harmonies that are done either by Mikael or other bandmates in studio and they are sung by the guitarist and keyboard player live.

It’s progressive rock. I think they are influenced by Peter Gabriel era Genesis and their songs like The Musical box, Firth of fifth and The cinema show. Genesis were much softer of course, but there are similarities in structure, transitions and skills. Check them out someday.
