- Orchestre Kiam was created in 1974 by producer/instrumentalist Verckys Kiamuangana, hence the name, "Kiam" from his last name. They lasted until 1977-78. They broke up and the late guitarist Souza Vangou created Orchestre Baya Baya, they were also short-lived. Check out the sebene @ 3:20. The guitarists combined immense technical virtuosity with an aesthetic skill for crafting unique melodic and rhythmic riffs that simultaneously hold the groove down and propel it forward. The rhythm guitars and bouncy bass lock in with the crisp, ebullient drums, producing a rhythm that is constantly in forward and circular motion. The sweet, blended harmonies of the five (!) vocalists drift sweetly over the rhythm section, and occasionally one of the singers punctuates the music with joyful shouts or spoken phrases. The lack of horns is a bit of a relief, leaving room for the guitarists to shine as melodic lead instruments.

L orchestre Kiam avec baya baya, masumu, memi, kamiki et bien d autres merveilles a bercé notre jeunesse dans les années 70. J étais un grand interpréte de ces chansons que j ai du plaisir à refredonner la cinquantaine passée.

This is a great song .I do not understand why it never became a hit on Kenyan charts.However you can hear familiar sounds there which were later replayed by Orch. Super Mazembe. My primary school mate, Mwidini sorry for the loss of your dear Dad.

In the song "Kamiki" they shout out to Les Kamale. Two volumes of their Super Hits were issued by Verckys in Nairobi. The songwriting credits & liner notes on these suggest a second generation of members had assumed the name by then: Munzola Ngunga (leader, singer), Mfui Mwane, Nkodia Via Nkodia, Shungu, Kanza Bayone (later of Yoka Lokole), Lita Bembo, Bamueniki and Munkala Bebidad. In addition to a Kenyan following they had fans in Nigeria too, after appearing in the Black African Festival in Lagos in 1976. After the core of the band split with guitarist Souza Vangu soon after Festival Lagos to form orch Baya Baya, Adios Alemba and Bakola Keta joined Defao's Big Stars, while leader Muzola Ngunga and guitarist Lele N'Sundi joined Debaba in L'Orch. Historia.
Orchestre Baya Baya
Their name came from a hit by Bakolo Keta and Orchestre Kiam, as they were an outgrowth of that band. An obituary on digitalcongo.net mentions Jacques Bazizila, who was guitarist of the band under the stage name of Souza Vangu, and who died 18 July 2012 in Brazzaville. After an apprenticeship with African Fiesta, in 1973 (age 23) he joined Verckys' Orchestre Kiam. After Festival Lagos, 1976, the core of the group split to form L'orchestre Baya Baya. They scored an immediate hit with "Sindangari." (In 1980 Bazizila left to found Les Kamikaze with Youlou Mabiala, Serge Kiambukuta and others.) Some of Baya Baya's singles were issued by the Mabele label in Nairobi, and reissued by the African label in Paris.
