I watched the video of him announcing this new signature. He showed the SG it was fashioned after and he compared them side by side. If memory serves me the portion of the back by the neck that looks different from from the rest of the back did look similar to the one you are reviewing. Honestly if I could afford one right now I'd get one like or the one you have.

While I don't dislike Joe or discredit his talent, he's undeniably amazing, but I can only see Joe Bonamassa as the Call Of Duty of the guitar world. He brings out a new model each year, making the special factor feel less each year.

    • @JohnnyBGoode9
      @JohnnyBGoode9 Před 8 měsíci

I think of it more like Madden, but it's a good analogy overall. It's less a signature than a line of guitars at this point. They could just call them "Epiphone Historics" and recreate some random vintage guitar once a year. I'd like it more that way, since I have zero interest in having Joe's name on my guitar. Don't enjoy his music, don't engage in guitar hero worship, but I like vintage guitars and limited edition true reissues like this, the Firebird I, etc, are something I'd be into if they went back to pricing them lower than USA Gibsons.

Not that he isn't talented, like you said. But to me, Bonamassa is the Taylor Swift of guitar heroes- a single person who has been afforded so much hype and unquestioning adulation that they literally have become a small industry unto themselves while countless people making music that is at least as remarkable go unknown. The big companies in the music industry (major labels, major guitar brands, etc.) have gotten so powerful and simultaneously so complacent that we can't count on anything from them other than endless rehashing of the same few tired ideas. This endless array of Bonamassa-inspired Epi's is the latest example, and yeah, I think Gibson/ Epiphone is going to find that they can only milk this concept so much.

I bought one of these and I really like it. It has a number of premium features that I think justify the cost. I was a little let down my not having Gibson pickups but in reality, there’s not much different in the sounds of the Epiphone pickups and the Gibson pickups. Fit and finish is first rate. I have a lot of Gibson guitars but I still enjoy the Epiphone Joe Bonanassa releases every year.

Looks nice, but the price is highly unfortunate. I don’t really think it’s justified to charge as Epiphone, as an SG (which is a thin slab of wood, which is easy/cheap to produce), and even as an artist model. Btw, there have been Epiphones at much lower price point with mother of pearl inlays. There is another SG for sale right now with a vibrola for a fraction of the price. I just don’t see how all these “features” on an SG that’s made in China add up to such a crazy price.
It’s unfortunate that Epiphone is alienating its core customer base who can’t afford these kind of prices. I love Epiphone, but that’s the sad reality.

The reason it cost this much is because a particular type of buyer wants a custom with ebony neck, three pickups, vibrola, and a headstock inlay, with real MOP. If you're inelastic on your demand for those things and you look at Gibson, you're gonna spend 5-7k on a custom shop or Murphy lab 61. It will be white like every other one unless you spend 8-10k+
People comparing it to a standard are people who's inelasticity is simply "must be an SG" with no regard for specs that are hard to add yourself. Like an ebony board, a pickup route, and a route for the ground wire, and drill pressing holes for a vibrola.
Ask a luthier what it would cost to do those things, add that to your stock sg standard price and then compare it to this epi.
I'll also say, this thing is a two piece body, one piece neck, no veneers. It's infinitely higher quality wood than any other epi sg I've seen.
I think they would've sold out in a heartbeat if they'd put burstbuckers or classic 57s in it.
The pickups are really the only thing that makes me think they could take 100-200 off the price. CTS pots, orange drop caps, and a switch craft jack are nice additions as well but realistically, 30 bucks in parts.
Stewmac Parsons st pickups sound amazing for cheap though if you hate the pickups that much. To me they actually sound really good for epi pickups.

  • @monstrok

Due to the white neck binding, I think they should've stayed with white binding on the head stock but on the JB Black Beauty the amber color fits. Love how the white pickguard adapts nicely with the cherry & gold hardware. I feel $1300 is a fair price considering you're getting a custom hard shell case, 1 more pup and a custom vibrola.

I really like my Joe Bonamassa ES-335, I play and enjoy it as much as my Gibsons. Great fit and finish and setup, amazing tones, and killer looks. At $1300 still felt like it was worth the price. This SG looks great and if it’s as nice as my ES-335 I’d be tempted to get it. However, my ES-335 had Gibson burstbuckers and is $100 less. No issues with probuckers but at $1400 I feel like they really dropped the ball with that. For anyone saying a Gibson SG costs same or less. That may be true but a Gibson SG Custom with these specs prob costs more than $5k.

These guitars are specialty guitars and should not be compared to "regular" models either from Gibson or Epiphone. So many people say they would rather buy an Epiphone SG and save a ton of money. That's exactly right, and this guitar is not for you. This guitar is for folks looking for something a little different than an off the shelf model. From a strict lens of "a players guitar", there are certainly many, many more affordable models.

Thanks for reviewing this model. I’m serouusly considering getting one. If your playing demo is anything to go on, it sounds great-lots of snap and bite, which most modern Gibson humbuckers generally don’t do. I have an SG Supreme with 57 Classics in it, and I’d prefer it to be a little brighter. If this is what Epiphone pickups sound like, I like ‘em, and they could be made in Morgoth’s basement for all I care! If it sounds and plays good, it is good, and it looks great too. $1400 is a bit steep for my wallet, but I want one anyway. And everybody who’s yapping about, “but it doesn’t have Gibson pickups!” needs to remember that it’s an SG Custom, not a Standard or a Tribute, you’re talking used vs. new, and Customs were always a lot more expensive than Standards. So go buy your used batwing-pickguard Standard, and I’ll be trying to scare up the scratch for this Joe Bonamassa SG Custom! If Gibson werr to make this exact guitar, it would be well over $5000, maybe closer to $10K, and you’d have to go through their Custom Shop. I don’t think they currently make an SG Custom anyway, except on custom order.

How was the fit and finish on yours? I really love the look of this SG but for the life of me, I can't understand how they can use real mother of pearl inlays and NOT clean off that glue residue??? It's a minor thing I know but I run a small company producing consumer products and I am daily checking QA on the production line and before boxing to make sure all the smallest details are perfect before they get sent out to the customer. Also our products are NOT $1,399 a piece lol. Still a really lovely guitar whatever :)

I'd say its above average and no glue residue showing on mine. It could probably benefit from a Plek job on the frets, but that's my only ding so far. Really has a nice sound and vintage vibe with the tinted headstock, gold hardware and 3 pickups.@@martin-1965

Mother of pearl is currently $9.56 per square foot on Amazon which could make 7-8 guitars even while being picky about how you select your inlays. Why do we pretend it’s such a premium material? I know the plastic is about $0.09 per square foot which is much cheaper, but this idea of this being only for select Gibson guitars is preposterous and asinine.

Cannot understand the pricing at all. In the U.K you could get a Gibson SG standard for just £50 more. The Fender McCready also shocked me even with the relic job it carries such a premium for an artists name.

Reminds me of the Capt Kirk SG. I wish Gibson would make some more of those in the dark wine red. I dunno about $1400 let alone the $1900 some bozos on Ebay are dreaming about but I just paid $1600 or only a couple benjis more for a mint Gibson Tony Iommi SG with phat ass case birth photo and a bunch of toys.. of course the Gibson has nibs and plek'd frets too so really Epiphone is on crack really getting pretty fantastical with their pricing because there is a world of difference between even the highest Epi v the lowest Gibson w/Gibson just killing it. Worse your basic upper Squiers in $400-$450 range KILL mid priced Epis in quality and playability albeit in the Fender mode. I have ONE cool Epi from AMS a couple years ago - the '58 LE Korina Explorer with gold HW. & mini Grovers but the kicker is it's now extinct and Epi now has their new Korina Explorer for almost double what I paid for mine and it doesn't have mini grovers and the logo is in wrong position to a '58 compared to mine but it does have "Gibson" pups. Both are made in China as Joe's is too. Even if I cared enough to swap Gibson pups in mine it would still be the cheaper deal - from the same Epiphone no less. Weird I will make a profit if I sell my Epi Explorer, if you buy the NEW Epi, you won't ever make a profit off it.🎸

Some of you will laugh, but I've always been as much an Epiiphone fan as a Gibson fan. I was attracted to Epiphones when as a 6-year-old I saw John Lennon blasting out the electric intro riff to "Revolution" live in about 1968. I thought that was the filthiest, the dirtiest, the snottiest, the most demented guitar I'd ever heard, and I freaking loved it. It was nothing like I ever heard listening to my older sister's Paul Anka records. No, this was not my daddy's car radio music. This was dirt, dragged up from the silt of the Mississippi Delta decades ago, and now morphed into an entirely new species.
Then I saw Jimmy Page on a Les Paul, and man, that dirty, double coil tone, I loved it. Then I saw Rory Gallagher in Vancouver on his brutally beaten-up sunburst Strat, and I loved that just as much.
Now, today, all three of these iconic guitars and their players hold a significant place in my heart and in the music I play and love. Trying to pick one over another would be like saying I prefer one of my children more than the other two, I can't do it. On a desert island give me a Casino, a Strat or a Les Paul, and I'd be happy with any of them. You cant go wrong.
Trog's, I've been critical of your videos a couple of times, twice I think, and both times you stepped up to the plate and responded to my criticism like a man. No complaints from me this time though. Great video. Credit where credit's due.
