Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an immigrant / expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for eight years now.
Together Mariana and I, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!

This is one of the most beautiful property. Does it have a habitation license. Can i spend my retired life here with my wife.
One would need to pay the architect to see what size and where you can legally build!

I am always dumbfounded at how much these beautiful farms are! The only problem I’ll have is I don’t have my car here, but I won’t let that stop me. I wouldn’t want to drive here, there are too many dangerous roads and fast drivers, I’m not too brave, although driving in NY is a different kind of scary.
What an incredible piece of property. I live in the northeastern United Stated and would love to live in the country on a far like that. I wouldn’t have a clue as to the process of moving to another country! Thank you for the video!

Well Joseph, I finally made it to Portugal to the Azores. I have an Airbnb for one month and then my plan is to get another one in Central Portugal next month, so I will keep you advised. I’m going to initiate the NIF and D7 Visa process here through an attorney in Ponta Delgada soon. I got in trouble with the Polícia in Madeira because I didn’t have a return flight ticket and had to buy a return trip ticket to NY, but they decided I had enough income and place to stay, so they let me into the country, no fun.
Wow what a spot, hydro , shelter, fruit trees could add a vegi patch as well as fish,firewood , i wish i had the guts to do it 😅

A land with a hundred olive trees, each one a hundred years old, for 55k. Each olive tree can be valued between 500 and 2000 euros. Therefore, it's an excellent price!

200 olive trees will yield around 200 liters of oil. That's around €1200 for one full year's crop. I would just keep the oil for my own consumption.
Of course you cannot live solely off of the crop, but considering they only take a few days to harvest it is a nice little income for trees that require very little maintenance. That can be two months of wages for some people here in Portugal, for maybe three or four days of harvesting!

Beautiful. How much flow does the river have in the dry season?
Roughly the same as you see in the video here, this is a really well used river in the summer with the swimming beach just downstream!!

Can you officially permanently live in the Ruin or is it just an agricultural Support building?
Can you also buy it as a foreigner or do you need a Portuguise passport for doing so?
You could pay an architect to find out the size which you could legally build a house here on this land, of course always use a lawyer to double check everything also!
… and yes a foreigner can legally buy, just need to check your visa options for how one could personally do this as they change per country of origin etc
Am I correct in thinking the general public have the right of access to river banks in Portugal?
Hi there, they have no access through your land to get to the river, but if they found another way to access the river they can swim there etc. but there are no other ways to this part of the river 😊

Hi there, Silvares is probably around 30/40km from Castelo Branco, city. Towns are closer though, Fundao is
20km, Covilha roughly

Hi there, it’s a difficult question to give a blanket answer to, would you like to extend the size? if so how much? What standard would you like it build to, luxurious, normal standard, basic, would you be doing any work yourself or paying a builder for everything etc, if you want to email us with a specific size and spec, I can definitely get you a quote from our builders!

Just to get a rough idea. Everyone has a budget and fold would need to know if renovating that would take it over budget.

Those grow all over, the yellow flowers, are those Scottish Broom?
Those particular ones are mimosa trees, an invasive species not native to Portugal - they are lovely but will crowd out native species unless controlled.
:D As above, Mimosa trees, fantastic for firewood, and so long as they are kept under control, yearly cutting and harvesting the logs for log burner fuel, not an issue :)
Do you know what the rules are in Portugal regarding micro hydro power generation?
Indeed..could easily (and fish friendly) tap into that 2 foot drop of river for year round elec. Some very good wee systems out there to do this,
I believe you are allowed to do this but unfortunately I do not know the specifics, I am sure someone reading this will though, I hope they can let us know 😊
as a micro hydro power specialist myself, unless sufficient drop (and legal rights to do so) I wouldn't expect much from what I've seen in this video, production/cost wise.
How prevalent/effective is the use of solar panels for home electricity generation in the area?
A lot of people do it and it is a very effective way of producing your own electricity in my opinion!

As a cherry man. How long would it take after planting some cherry trees to have them start producing at a starter rate. Enough to eat and preserve etc?
Hi there, I plant every January, by the June of the same year I will be experimenting one or two cherries off that same tree, by three years they will be close to full production

You definitely can bring the poles down the entrance track, cost would be something I can find out, one could contact EDP to see how much they charge also, I believe they have a calculator/simulator on their website

I love these videos you do so much, mate. But it is always such a cold 'reality shower' when you realise the monumental battle it will be to actually get a liveable house on these plots. Especially now the Portuguese are (rightly) starting to get upset about the amount of immigration into their country.
I don't see any monumental battles, the only time I personally see people struggle is when they want to build humungous things in places where it would not fit with the landscape... I personally have purchased a few properties here, some ruins, some turn-key and have rebuilt the ruins up with no problems, paperwork takes a little while, a few months, but other than that, easy stuff... Just needs patience, money and vision.

I already thougth so. Being showed long on the land then the property is nothing. No acces to water and electricity. Smash down the ruïne. The land is great, but always remember its spring now with lots of Rain, thats why the land is Green and full of flowers. Emagine hot sommers when the land go,s dull and everything becomes dry and yellow. Keep in your head the riverstream can become dry even they tell you it go,s whole year around. Yes offcourse but the streem can become 20cm, thats nothing. They showed this proportie in the best time of the year. Mimosa is April time. Could winters in the Mountain and hot sommers. Living an lonely live and far away from supermarkets. This is not for everybody. Good for of grid living. If you can stand the heat in the sommer. 😂
Wow, how negative! The river is just upstream from the Praia fluvial (summer swimming beach), so obviously flows a lot also during the summer… Fundão is what, 10km away at max… Village and mini markets are walking distance at 600m.
Absolutely not just for off grid living because there’s electricity and mains super close, but I would suggest a borehole and septic instead of mains.
Check the area out to see it really is not a lonely place to live. Or actually don’t, because I’m sure there are many other places in this world that will suit you better my friend.
