My name is David, and I play the mandolin. I've played with multiple award-winning bluegrass bands across the world including Missy Raines, Mile Twelve, Cup O’Joe, and The Foreign Landers, and I curate the weekly mandolin video series #mandolinmondays hosted by the Mandolin Cafe. Really appreciate the very direct approach, and clarity in your explanations.
One question- At the end, (18:55-ish) you mentioned making sure to play the root again on beat 3 of the 2nd measure, and on beat 3 of the 4th measure, as a good “general rule”. Is there a theoretical purpose or significance to those specific places?
I can’t help but feel like there might’ve been some sort of general road map to composing “fiddle tune” melodies… that was accidentally left out of my “welcome” basket. 🤷‍♂️
Any advice, or references to videos that might help me grasp this, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks either way though!

Thanks for this and the taters lesson
Could you shed some light on putting together an intro to a sung bluegrass song? I've heard people say, "just play the turn around." I have no idea what they're talking about. Have any of the rest of you heard that term?

That's a great question David! I'm adding that topic to a list of future video lessons!
