Being an older guy there's a fair bit of nostalgia for Buck here... Got my first Buck pocket knife from my grandpa way back in the 1970s, God rest his soul. He was a career Fish & Game Department chief in my home state of New Hampshire and is most assuredly where I got my love for the outdoors from. Going to have to dig up my old Bucks and give them some new life. Thanks for the video Aaron.
Good to see a very useful and elegant classic knife featured. Nice general review. Thank you for the new information on the upgraded steel for the Buck 112 and the pocket sheath. I’ve been using these thumb studs on my Buck 110s and original SOG Tomcats since the mid to late 80s and was also glad to see that style has come back around.
Such a good review, I ordered one and got it in the mail last week. As a teenager in the 70’s, I always carried a 110, but never had a 112.......until now. I love it! I ordered mine though in the 5160 Drop Point. Thanks for reminding me just how special these knives are. Got it in my pocket as I type this. Thanks Brother! -Stephen, Ohio
I have tactical folders for defense. But i absolutely go ape shit crazy for classic folders. Im in love with the 110.
I don't have a 110, but growing up that was THE knife every boy wanted. Thanks for doing a wide variety of reviews @gideonstactical!
I got the thumbstud for my 112. Works great and breathes new life into the design!
great review on a great older folder, have had mine since 1968, old an worn, but still going strong.
Never new this was an option for the 110. Will probably get one for mine. I don't think I can go with the knife purse though. Great vid as always Aaron.
I picked up a Buck 112 with S30V blade a while back. Outstanding belt carry knife. I invested a little bit more trying to find the exact sheath I wanted for it, but now that I have the right sheath it's perfect. Nothing against the sheath it comes with, it's not bad at all. I just wanted a custom one for it, to be a little different. Classic, timeless knife.
Great video I own a few 112 &110s I think I’m going to try the kiwi stud and the bar
I like the knife hook up you have there ,that black handle is nice . The thumb stud will be going on my Case tribal lock as well
I picked up a buck 112 in the 5160 with oak scales right before this video dropped haha had a feeling they might be sold out by the end of the weekend. Got the heads up from your Instagram page. Great video ok the class of classic knives. I have owned some of the most expensive modern knives and as times goes on I find my self selling them off and buy old classic like this one !
Best wishes from Exeter California gateway to the sequoias!
Have had my 112 for over 40 years it’s a must have.
I have had mine since the mid 1970's, as well.
Got a 112 for my HS graduation in 1982 - 37+ years ago now. She's a little worn and needs a good sharpening, but is still a solid knife.
There's also an automatic version out as well that's pretty slick
Great video. I have a 112 in 5160 drop point with oak scales which I like in every way but the laser etching-- which doesn't seem to fit in with such a traditional knife. I was later told that stamping the blade would create a stress point for fracture by Buck, it's a very very minor detail that I wish was different but I love it anyway. I also have a Copper and Clad custom 112 drop with nickel, instead of brass (which tarnishes faster) and blue diamond wood scales that I carry (when I feel like carrying a Sherman tank) that I really like. I was watching a video about kwik studs and the maker of the video got injured using one so I remembered that I'd seen your video before and I should let you know to take a quick look at it FYI for your own safety just to look out for a fellow knife knut. Seems like common sense to me but thought I'd share just the same. I also read your 'about' page because I wanted to understand the name of your channel and its an interesting story and a very appropriate, great name. Keep making great stuff and stay safe. - Mike in Pennsylvania.
Enjoyed your presentation & reviews. Some good stuff there man. Thanks for the info.
I bought my 1st Buck 110 in 1971 at the Fort Sam Houston Post Exchange store for $20. I carried them for many a year.
In fact I just bought one yesterday as a present. I just love the weight & feel of it.
They are great old school blades.
Buck is a great company too.
I'm gonna go look for that automatic 110, so I'll catch you later man. Lol
Bought my 112 in 75 at ft. Lost in the woods . Still going strong .
I've got a Craftsman Gunstock model 94609 folding knife that I purchased in 1988 that I swear was actually made by Buck. Same design. It's such a high quality knife! I'm hoping that the thumb stud add-on you reviewed will fit on that knife. Ordering one tonight.
no. it was by schrade
I have the 110 and 112. The 110 I got from dlt and it’s the 2016 limited edition s30v drop point. It’s still hair shaving sharp. They have a 2017 limited edition s30v drop point for $89.95. I haven’t gotten that one yet but have my eyes on it. Thanks for the review and will have to hit amazon for the 112 with the upgrades. I have always liked buck knives and also knives from other companies. I also have the benchmade 940 only exclusive from goinggear at a $240.00 price tag. Its a great knife but I’m not a fanboy of any one company. I like but don’t love any of my knives. I do love your reviews and honesty, keep up the great work.
Just ordered a LE 110 in S35VN, nickel silver bolsters, and black canvas micarta. I haven’t owned one since I was a kid, so I’m pretty stoked. I don’t think I’d ruin the aesthetic with a thumbstud, but I can appreciate the utility. I could see throwing one on if I could shake it closed like a Spydie.
I was thinking of getting a custom made from buck with a SV 30 drop point blade instead of the canoe one any opinion
Hey, happened across your vid and these are great options! My 112 that I had in the Navy 82-86. found it again for this video .Has been an EDC until I broke the tip about 10 yrs ago.I sent it to Buck and they cleaned her up and replaced the blade. Is there a way to just get the 5160 blade exchanged with the standard blade? Plan to pass this down to my grandson.
Like the thumb stud!
I just bought me one of them thumb studs thanks for the info keep the great videos coming . I would like to see more gerber videos
@Derrick Pierce
Working fine I have modified it by giving it some gimping just take a file and cut some checks into it, looks better and works better for me,
Got to love the old classic style knives
I am going to get some new pins while I decide if I want to make burlap or canvas micarta scales.
I have plenty of knives, but I always wanted to make a 110 more grippy.
Love the videos, keep em coming sir!
Love the video this was my first knife in 1974 and still have it
I want to see a real review of that new Condor Operator Bowie. How is the geometry, toughness, design, seath and if it is recommended for outdoors? Most reviews are brief and doesn't show much of what the knife can do. I don't get enough from the vids to make up my mind for the purchase. If you post it, I'll use your link for the buy.
I got a 110 Auto amd love it. I may get a kydex belt sheath for a
Thanks Aaron another cool video
Enjoy the video I have a 112 it’s been extremely handy reliable and well made
Great video.
Just resharpened my 112 last night but an upgrade in blade steel sounds good.
Very cool usually I don’t see anything I’m willing to pay for cause I have so many blades but buck in 5160 very cool on my wish list 🤗
love your videos Aaron
Amazing knife so iconic, I got the Buck 110, very nice upgrade, I like the bras colour 💥😲💥😲💥😲💥😲💥😲💥😲💥😲💥😲💥😲
Cool vid. Have 112 on order from buck.
Aaron, this is weird. I was just sharpening my Buck 112 then I stropped it. Hair popping sharp. I sat down at the computer and here you are doing a vid on the 112 and 110. I did not know they made a aftermarket thumb stud but I am going to get one. Also Academy Sports has the Buck 110 for $27.99 Thanks for the information. Ray, Oklahoma
The thumb stud is a great idea. I'm in my late 50s and the Buck 110 was my first real hunting knife as a kid. Saved my money until I could buy it. I'm not sure I understand the point of the leather pocket sheath as opposed to just putting it in a pocket. I much prefer the black leather snap belt sheath that came with these classics. Just my two cents
Ebay has a quick draw sheath as you pull the folder out the blade opens
In the 70's growing up if you carried a 110 you we're a cool outdoor guy. Do a review of a company that took a 110 and make a automatic out of it with handle slide activation
Keith Van Tassel Buck has an auto buck 110
Crazy how ive been looking at the buck 112 for about a week and bam! You make a video? Do you feel like after all these years of buying defferent knives and cost of the quote( best) survival, hunting, and so on knives, you find your self full circle and re ashing the realistic ideas of great but inexpensive knives weve all grown up with are , well just fine!!!!?
Do you have one that fits the benchmade proper
I love the modern 110s. I wish they made the 112s in the older blade shape. I wonder if they changed the shape to accomodate their Edge 2000 grind somehow. Still a great knife, though.
" that's some bad hat Harry"
The 110 was my favorite for many years, but it's a boat anchor compared to the Spyderco offerings today
I use a similar pouch, homemade, and o use paracord so I can let it dangle from my belt in my RF pocket. No weight in the pocket and no sheath visible!
Will that thumb stud fit a Buck 55?
Love my Buck fixed blade….just ordered a new 110 to carry in my hunting coat. Found myself out in the woods without a knife.
Very cool
This was a great vid. 👍👍👍
That Thumb Stud is Exactly what we used to buy from the back of Biker or Gun magazines and they only came in Silver, funny I think I Need a new 110 😜🤑
Does the thumb stud interfere with sharpening the cutting edge?
Not for my experience, but obviously, you can easily take it off if it becomes a problem.
I have an old shrade oldtimer buck 110 look alike love it but the nail nick is a pain with carpal tunnel so im thinking of a buck auto or the above quick draw sheath schrade has a buct 110 clone thats 5" blade real antler scales for less than a buck even though i love buck
Thumb stud dont work for me and it slips off when I try when I tightened it so hard I bent the bar to tighten it with
They have just put out a version witha pocket clip and thumb disc. Smokey Mountain Knife Works exclusive I believe. $99 and worth every penny!
*pulls out my brand new buck 110 slim pro plus with s35vn blade, black g10 scales with dark red micarta liners just to watch the video*
I bought a bunch of those thumb studs from the manufacturer in china on ebay for 1.25 a piece in brass, black, and steel for many of my knives.
The one thing i hate is the poor qc from Buck. Of my last 13 buck knives (stockman 301's, 112's, and 110's that i got, 8 of them had rediculous blade play. Luckily with their pin construction i just laid it flat on the concrete floor and hit the pivot with a hammer and fixed them. And the shocker was that 4 of my hundred dollar 110's had the blade play and 3 of my stockman 301's.
Will the thumb stud work with the 110's original pouch?
Yes.
bos 420hc is probably better than their 5160 when it comes to knives. For axes, 5160 is one of the best steels you can buy. I have owned a 119 in 4020hc and 5160.
I love Bucks 420HC, I think it's the perfect knife steel, it's not the hardest steel ever but I don't want too hard of a steel, 2 minutes on ceramic after a hard days use is all it ever needs to come back to razor sharp. 420HC is a really durable easy to maintain steel that's perfect for a heavy use knife. Just have to learn to keep it sharp.
I bought my Buck 110 because it's a classic knife. I love everything on my stock 110, When I look at it, it reminds me of how much I wanted my very own as a child and how every one of my older friends had one but would never part with it. Now that I have one after all those years, why would I change anything on it??
Buck also has one in Bos-Heat treated S30V
Rodrigo Teresa mdl 151 Mayo s30v Paul boss heat treat, had 2 sold 1 at local gun an knife show for $150.00 as it's a discontinued. mdl.
You can buy a pair of such thumbstuds on aliexpress for ~~~ 2 USD.And compatible leather pouch is approx 5USD on average days.
Great option thanks eh !!
Those are Copper&Clad exclusives. 👍🏼
It is long past due for the 110 to come with low profile ambi thumb studs and assisted opening capability
they already have that option on customs
Does the thumbstud screw scratches the blade?
Nope.
Got my 110 at the main PX Ft. Lewis in 1974.
A real man doesn't need protective glasses, haha just kidding safety is key and always love the vids.
You can get S30v on buck’s website
I bought the thumb stud, but I don’t like it. It doesn’t fit that well (such as how it doesn’t fit flush on the blade), or like how yours appears too. It also did leave marks, albeit small and hardly noticeable. I took mine off until the blade loosens up, and can be flicked open using a thumb stud.
had to go find my 112 to play while i watched....25th anniversary ranger lol
The question is can you whittle wood with it?
Pulls my 110 out the drawer to watch the video
Sammme
Mark Reyes yep after the video I ran upstairs to get mine out. :-)
Mark Reyes I told my wife to grab her's but as normal I don't exist.
rad roofer Your wife has a 110? Nice! I’d gift one to my Mom, but she uses knives for everything but cutting. She “borrowed” my Benchmade Griptillian to scrape paint off of concrete. I’ve been slowly getting her knives and tools of her own.
@@radroofer lol
i can make a blade like the case xx-changer for the buck for less than $10 out of cpm s90v or s0v or s35vn or cpm 154cm
25$ for pouch ?? I am sure in wrong business
INDIAN PREPPER 24*7 Haha I was thinking the same thing.
Ka bar 7-Inch Leather Sheath is for 8 $
It needs a deep carry clip attached
Has any one heard why 1972 woodsman is not doing any videos on utube .hes the one who has videos on the buck 110 s .he has several video s on the buck 110 s . Just wondering.
Why don't you just go to their website and get it in s30v?
my custom 112 has 3 pins, not 4 like every ranger i see. anyone else have a 112 ranger with 3 ,not 4 pins in the scales?
Got the110 but not the112 .
That pocket sheath looks like it was made by a 5th grader. I can't believe anyone would pay for it.
I asked for a Buck knife for Christmas when I was 12. I was very clear to my mom. "I want a Buck knife. It folds and it has a wood handle with brass on the edges". She got me a fixed blade knife. I never did get one, but now I'm about to right that wrong!
I do not understand pocket sheaths. Just why??
welderhelper79 I'm assuming that you like pocket clips on your knives. The new buck 110s now come with those, thumb stud and pocket clip. Me personally I prefer the good old fashioned, heavy pocket weighing 110.
Jon Kalashnikov....I suffer from no assatall disease, so heavy pockets aren’t my thing. I tried it for years though. Now I carry an Opinel #6 in a horizontal sheath on my right hip. Very light, comfy, and out of the way.
@@WOMPITUS one word “Suspenders”
@@norby0418 overalls
But I love Victorinox. Hunter pro
Kwik?? That's a One-Arm-Bandit. Those have been around since before you were born.
NGMonocrom got mine in 1969 for my 110, could remember the original name till I saw your response.
+John Fuller
Yeah, that little thing was just decades ahead of its time.
I will never pay that amount of money for a piece of leather I can make myself....
Buck now makes a buck 110 automatic
By a buck auto knife I have two off them
5160 on a Buck?!? Do they still offer these?
I believe they're going to release an auto version of this knife
There already is an auto. Has a small crest on one scale that you press to release it.
Schweet!
You can put a 110 in your coin pocket??? What the heck pants are those?
Got me the ultimate hunter in S35vn. What a blade! And no pins in the handle.
DLT Trading: www.dlttrading.com/buck-110-ultimate-hunter-s35vn-limited-edition-green-canvas-micarta
Sorry but 5160 is not a upgrade from 420 c . I still carry my 110 i got from my grandad 30 yrs ago.
That pocket case is just dumb.
If you want a knife pocket sheath why not just make it yourself? Lol. That is a ten minute job on one like that.
There’s a reason it’s been around forever... It’s perfect as is
The quality control on the 110 sucks. Every decade it gets worse. Paid 80$ for a clip drop point variant and it’s the worst knife I’ve gotten ever.
Your just not a man if you don’t have a buck 110 and a zippo lighter
If you paid $25 for that sheath you got screwed. Would cost $4, and 15 minutes to make one.
Kinda babbling there bro....
Need to stop watching these videos. Running out of money.
mexicansuperman lol...
