- Hi folks and welcome back!
Firstly, I hope you are all well and managing to cope under these unprecedented circumstances.
We are all experiencing some difficult and highly restrictive times at the moment due to the current global pandemic. In accordance with the government’s advice, I will not be filming out in the woods for as long as we are in ’lockdown’. I do not wish to place additional workload on the already overstretched NHS and emergency services, should I become unwell or get injured while out in an isolated area. I hope you understand and rest assured that I will be back ‘out’ as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, I will do my best to continue to make videos from my home and garden - I feel a few projects coming on so stay tuned!
In this video, as a response to questions and requests, I will be going through the kit and equipment I carried with me on the second leg of the Norfolk Coast Path. I managed to keep the weight of my gear down to 17 kg including food, water and camera gear (not including my actual camera, which I carried in my hand for the entire 96 miles walked so far!) This load was comfortable and manageable and contained everything I needed for the walk.
I have attempted to list the items below, with links to items where they are still available.
I wish you all well, stay safe and take care.

Music Mariachiando by Doug Maxwell/Jimmy Fontanez
Simon, I was photographer for a expedition in the jungle. We attempted a Portage over a waterfall, unfortunately my camera bag decided to part company. WHEN WE CAUGHT UP DAMAGE WAS DONE. THE SHOP BACK IN THE MAINLAND TRIED BUT FAILED TO RESUSCITATE.....soooooo the lens works great to start a fire...lol Hope your camera is brought back to former glory!..
May your feet be sure on the trail, your campfire warm at night...and the trail tales are true!
Nothing beats a good old Trangia burner. I love mine. I also have the Trangia 25 cook kit. Bit big for back packing, but real nice for bicycle touring. Stay safe
My Grandmother had a description for wind like the she would say in her Northern Ireland accent, "It's a Lazy Wind, it blows through you rather then around you"
Hahaha - I like that!
:-) *
Nice.
That quote is used in the very south of New Zealand to describe the wind in Invercargill.
We Northern Ireland folks have many quaint sayings! 👍😉
What a bloody great intro 👍🏻
Name of the Intro song?
czcams.com/video/PzpQWj_YlmM/video.html :D
@@duderinowoah4477 I'v got a new favourite tune! Am going to have to learn the words now! Thanks :D
Best parts: [1] seeing that Simon is healthy in this time of trouble, as I was worried about him; [2] that giggle-inducing gear disappearing / reappearing act perfectly synchronized to the music.
I wanted to say absolutely the same about nr 1.
I was never more looking forward to your next video, so I know, you are alright.
All the best for you. Stay well.
Best greets from Austria
Glad to see you are ok also. Over 800 new cases in Oklahoma. It's all getting very real. God bless and stay safe.
Thank you Kimberly! 😁
Hope you are okay over there in Oklahoma.
Stay safe!

Thank you Kimberly! 😁
Hope you are okay over there in Oklahoma.
Stay safe and keep well!
Love this gear review, always interesting to know what other people carry and what weight it all is, real world hiking at its best 👍
I came for alternative camping gear and found a great new channel. Great stuff. Binge watching. Thanks.
Thanks Kevin. 👍
It’s great video and I really enjoy it , thank you very much Simon . 🙏 Warm greetings Detroit, Michigan USA
Brilliant intro 👌. My new favourite channel. Great gear ideas and presentation. Also loved the canoeing cooking kitchen setup.
Finally, someone who includes camera and tripod in their camping kit.
I've been trying to figure out how to keep things light, because camera gear isn't exactly small and light and not much you can do in that department, so best bet would be to go as light as possible with everything else.
So, the intro. I didn't know what to do with that. Being from Texas, I associate very different images with Mariachi music. Way to keep us on our toes! Loved it!
I carry dental floss in my sewing kit. That stuff won't break and the wax makes it super easy to use.
Excellent video and review of all your kit really enjoyed watching it and definitely going to purchase some of your items you had on your trip ☺👍
Thank you, so much Simon.
Your videos are always a joy to watch.
Nice kit, learned a few tricks . Experienced hikers always have a trick or 2 to teach. Thankyou ! P.s: A dependable disposable lighter " IS " bushcrafty ( is that a word) . First item that goes into any fire kit is a trusty quick fire source .
I very much enjoyed your intro - thank you. Stay happy and healthy! Best wishes from Germany, Juliane.
Hi Simon, thanks for sharing your kitlist, always interesting so see what others are using and why. I've been catching up on your earlier videos and enjoying them, it provides a welcome relief at this time.
Great video! I couldn't stop laughing! Keep safe and well! Thanks for your wonderful and inspiring videos!
Great video Simon it's always nice to see the stuff that you use on your trips please stay safe and God bless as always
Great to see you back on our screens again Simon. Glad you’re well. Thanks for sharing your kit list. I personally always love to see the kit you use. You choose and buy wisely. My wish list just gets bigger every time! Thank you. Stay safe, look after the family and Maggie of course. Atb. Paul.
Im only on the titles/start of this vid and im already loving it! Mariachi music for an intro is as bonkers as it is brilliant!!!! Bloody love it mate!
I like the way everything thing is neat, compact and minimalistic. Very well organised fella 👍
Thanks for the Gear overview Simon. STAY WELL. TAKE CARE..
I absolutely love the Norfolk coast when i lived in East Anglia. And England, great times, and very funny people.
God bless you all.
Thank you Simon, great stuff.
Brilliant video with great tips and reviews. I need to sort my possible pouch the same as yours. Much appreciated and thank you for taking the time to make the video.
Your gear videos are simply the BEST! I love everything you post!
Fantastic, thank-you so much for filming your adventures Simon. I live very close to Weybourne - that beach is very windy and harsh, the tarp did well to stay in one piece.
love all your video's Simon you are helping to keep me sane at the moment Sir thank you
Hi Simon! Best intro ever! :-) Thank you for showing us the gear you used on the walk. Stay healthy. ATB André
Thank you Simon for a well informed and amazing video.
Looking forward to seeing the next one.
Stay Safe from Hampshire UK.....🌳🌳⛺🔥🌳🌳
Great informative video, will help me keep my pack weight down as I always put things in 'just in case'. Thank you.
Thank you! I can be a job to keep the weight down, and sometimes a bit unnerving taking away those ‘safety’ items - I didn’t take any spare clothing on this hike for example - and risked the weather - if it had been pouring with rain, I’d have been in a different situation for sure! 👍
Thanks for the knowledge Simon, good to see you're doing well.
Glad your safe Simon, interesting video many thanks for the great information.
I watched this video again for the great gear content and fun music. It’s an excellent video. 🙏🏼⛺️😎
I love that intro. Must have been hard work with all those shots. Love the bag spin and boot walk. Great video Simon as always. Thanks
Once again a fantastic and informative video. Thank you Si. In these uncertain times videos like this help all of us that are itching to get out! Stay safe Uncle Si Brows 😘
😁😉
GREAT NORTENO MUSIC! That lifts spirits all over the Southwestern United States! I have a good sampling in my CD collection and have even seen one of my favorite bands perform on the Plaza Major in Madrid, right outside my hotel window. I always liked the mesh airflow back technology, beginning a good few years ago.
I’ve watched this sooo many times as it is sooo useful. I’m still utterly amazed at your packing of the bottom compartment. If I had filmed myself trying to load the bottom compartment with my sleep system it would’ve made for great slapstick comedy of a man fighting with his backpack🤩👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the tour of your back packing kit. Good high quality gear that has served you well. Stay safe and healthy in isolation, Simon. We are living through times they will talk about long after we are gone from this place.
Crazy times! Thanks Denis. 👍
Hey Simon, great overview over your gear! Really interesting kit and I really like your little woodstove (got the same wind shield), didn't know that one before.
Stay safe and cheers from Germany! Martin
The intro was pure gold!
Really liked the intro and also the info about the gear you use. Thanks
Another terrific video Simon - great work. I've been watching your videos over the past few days & am really enjoying them - really well filmed & edited - you must spend ages on the editing 👍
I'm always seriously impressed when I see the kit that many of you guys get into such a small pack! I struggle to get my gear into a 90L rucksack let alone a 38L one! 🥴
Thanks Simon. Great video. Cheers from Canada. Best wishes to you and yours.
Music choice fairly cheered me up! Good vid and loved the animation! Stay safe Simon - a Bloke in the Shed!
Fantastic as always Simon! I hope you and your fare well in these difficult times.
Thank you Samuel, and you too. 👍
Brilliant sound of the sea at the end,
as a kid every year we used to stay in a bungalow on the top of the dunes overlooking the sea slight further south [near Hemsby]
I’ve Wonderful memories of going to sleep while listening to the waves roll up on that beach.
It’s such a soothing sound isn’t it! I had a friend who owned one of the beach huts in the dunes at Hemsby - lovely spot, but sadly all washed away now. 😥
Hey Simon good to see you healthy and hale. Here in blackwell Oklahoma the town is so small that they don't mind if you get out for a walk. So I was why not go hiking and maybe camp at the river. But until then I'll just have to live vicariously through you God bless you and yours and can't wait for your next video.
Great video Simon, as usual also very informative. I'm in the process of collecting lightweight gear for a 2-3 day trip once we are all able to do so.
Stay safe and healthy to you and your family and also to everyone else take care.
And you mate! 👍
Just discovered your channel a few weeks ago and loving the content, keep it up!
Great collection of Backpacking gear and stuff really appreciate that .. thanks
Love your videos man, I learn quite a lot.
Enjoyed this video. Thanks for the kit rundown
Nice pack. Well organized and efficient. Smart choices in your basic survival and first aid kit. I carry the same stoves. Very good choice. I made a wind screen from a piece of aluminum flashing material, just folded up. I unfold it and it works very well. Cheap 😄
Good idea! 👍 stay safe Robert.
Nice one Simon 👌🏻 always interesting 🧐. Stay safe 👌🏻
Fascinating! Stay safe and be well my friend.
Great set up - thx for sharing!
I read Endurance. I swore I would never complain about being cold again! What an amazing story!!!!
Absolutely! Those men went through so much. On their return almost all of them enlisted and went off to war - tough lads!
Thanks for keeping the content coming during the current unpleasantness...its much appreciated.
Hi Simon, I am always surprised how many little and big bags people take with them. Yes your stuff is more organized, but how much weight do all those little bags add to your kit? A tarp can be rolled up and kept that way using a rubber band or stretchy para-cord. Possibles pouch, great. A semi-sturdy ziplock bag would do almost the same job, is lighter, and keep it waterproof too. A sleeping bag does not need a compression bag. Instead put your sleeping bag in your backpack to fill up empty gaps in your pack. A tent does not need a little bag, like the tarp. You eliminate all these extra little bags, replace them with simpler things like stretchy para-cord, and you will save some weight.
I see what you are saying and it would definitely make a difference to weight, but I’d never get all that gear in without compressing it into bags -also makes finding, packing and organising gear much easier - I like my gear compartmentalised and stowed in order. 👍
Great video Simon. Thanks for all the info.
Nice one Simon.. Thanks for keeping the content flowing.
It’s good to see your being safe but continuing to film and provide EXCELLENT content. I’m ordering sand pegs because of this video. We love the beach 🏖 And hate cartwheeling sun shades. You provide wonderful product description with actual footage of its use. Wonderful film production. Thanks. Stay safe & God bless 🙏🏼⛺️🎥😎
Thanks Roland! 👍🏕
Love the opening and the song Simon ,
Glad to see you’re doing well. Thanks for the gear review, always interested in what other people carry . It helps me see what I need and don’t need . With what is going on these days , if you can , how about a video on how to make a poutine . Had one , very good, it was my first and I live in Kentucky. Never heard of it and tried it and it was G-O-O-D !
Thanks for the hiking videos, the places were beautiful. Simon , take care, be safe until next time , cheers.
Thanks mate - going to google what a poutine is now! 😁
Thank you. Just back from a trip (yurigar np nsw Aust.) Wished I had watched this before going. Great presentation and content, very informative. Nick
Bro that music was hilarious with the gear animation!!!
Love gear videos and seeing what others carry :)
Great informative video Simon, well done.
Excellent video. I love editing and effects.
Great intro! I was almost expecting Ralph, the wonder llama, or something equally Pythonesque. Stay safe, stay healthy.
Great intro, something new. Loved it!
Another great video, thanks and stay safe Simon
That was some really cool editing for the introduction. Well done.
Cracking , professional , informative and very watchable video ... especially in this difficult time .... I see your relaxation reading was about Shackleton ... a true explorer and leader of men whom I hold in high esteem . I am still using Aluminium lids made after watching one of your earlier Videos
Thank you! 👍
Glad the lids are serving you well.
I've recently bought a pair of them boots and have been quite impressed with them 👍
Nice to see you well Simon, I'm in the middle of the floor with all my camping gear doing an inventory and clean up and like the rest of us waiting for the end of this to get here. And of course a nice cup of hot chocolate. Best to you and the family and pat McGee on the head for me.
Thanks Ronald, and to you!
Great time for those gear sorts and maintenance tasks! 👍
Great run through Simon, loving the slippers!
Thank you. 😁
Thank you Simon, another great video! I used to use an MSR Micro Rocket stove, until one day a mate of mine decided to light up a candle as I was screwing the gas canister to it. The valve was open, and the gas arced to the candle and blew itself about thirty feet into the bush. I use a mini-Trangia now, with the same box stove as you, and a purple fluid...it's fondue fuel, odourless, and no smoke. Much of the gear you use is the same as mine, though yours has seen many more miles; a good thing! I love the choice of reading!!! Stay safe mate, cheers!!!
Whoa!! A lucky escape there!!! Yes, meths stoves are much safer haha! 👍🔥
Just got to see this
An excellent presentation
Loaded and to the point
My Trangia is also ages old
I hiked too long with just an Army poncho, so now I live in luxury and use a 3x3 tarp
Good information, thank you. Now I'm considering adding straps to attach my sticks that is east to access.
I have simple tastes. First, I click the like button. Then I get hot, delicious tea. Finally, I settle comfortably to enjoy Simon, A Bloke in the Woods being super awesome on my screen.
Thanks Tom! 😁
Thanks Simon. I can see we'll all be garden campers for the next few months or so!
Thanks for the smiles simon😊
Yay, New Video! And I'm glad to see you are a) healthy and b) using the time constructively to keep us all entertained! Thank You
Should you be bored, how about a short overview of your reading list - the bookshelf looked intriguing
Interesting idea - I might have to give that some thought. 👍
Stay safe and keep well.
Very instructive video. I like what you did with the intro.
By the way; nice slippers! ;-)
Hahaha - I do love my slippers, you have no idea how many times I’ve considered taking them to camp! 😂
thanks Simon,be safe and look for the next one
Nice gearvid. Keep it healthy and wise over there Simon and to you'all! Over here I was lately troubled with some (sport)injuries, but I've just restarted my old packcanoe restoration in the hope that after the coronacrisis I can go and do some nice bushtrips ...
It’s the perfect time for restorations! Hopefully it’ll soon be over and we can all get back out ! 👍 stay safe!
In Holland we have a smart lockdown wich means we do stay at home mostly but also that we can go out when fit. In the province where I live (Fryslân, in the North) there aren't that much corona cases, probably because we where in early lockdown and listened to it...
Brilliant tutorial !! nothing flash nothing clever - just good safe sound advice a breath of fresh air !! my only advice genuinely ment don`t load your self down with ` survival ` gear you don`t need you have the perfect balance & carry a back up mobile with 4 different net work sim cards - the best advice i was ever given was use two walking poles ( now im 50 ) really does keep the pain down monday morning back at work ...
Great video as always... loved the intro and music. lol Take care... stay safe and well... cheers! :)
Said it before (maybe here!) but the thermarest x-therm is one of the best pieces of equipment I've ever bought. Had it about 2 1/2 years and I haven't touched any of my others since, regardless of the time of year. That said, I'm not sure when I'll be using it again! Thanks for the vid, atb.
Best intro ever!!!! Well done.
Glad to see that you are well Simon. I also just saw a new video from Andy of Kent Survival pop-up. I have wondered/worried about each of your well being. I got a good chuckle from something you said, at around 2:04. "Before we were rudely interrupted by the corona virus". LoL!! Rude is right!! All of my favorite get-aways and trail-heads are closed. Enjoyed this video. Be safe and be well. God bless. Roger
Thanks Roger!
Keep well, the trails will be there after all this has passed. 👍
This is a really great video. Thx for sharing.
Glad to see all of the gears worked out
And I totally understand about the pee bag
When you are that confined and got to go I don't see one problem with it so long as you screw that cap on the right way and it also adds additional warmth and as long as you clean it out really good for the next time and use it strictly for one purpose only
Oh yes, it only ever gets filled with one kind of liquid! 😂
You are so right with the Thermarest Neoair xtherm I use it all year round with a Highlander 3 season ex army bag. I would replace it again without thinking as yes it is very expensive but for me it is by far the best i have ever owned.
stay well and thank you.
Nice rundown of Kit Simon. Thanks
Great video. Very educational
The gear disappearing bit was really neat👍
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
love the change of pace in the intro music
