  • The Georgia Supreme Court removed Probate Judge Christina Peterson from her position. This decision followed a comprehensive investigation into numerous ethics breaches.
The court's decision happened just days after Peterson's arrest at an Atlanta nightclub.
Christina took office in 2020, which had attracted the attention of the Judicial Qualifications Commission (JQC) for her alleged misuse of social media even before her tenure began. The JQC's thorough investigation revealed a series of ethical violations, including significant issues with criminal contempt, which is what ultimately lead to their recommendation for her removal so they say.
The Supreme Court's ruling emphasized, "In light of her multiple violations of the CJC rules in relation to several matters-some of them reflecting a flagrant disregard for the law, court rules, and judicial conduct rules; the pattern of violations that the Director proved by clear and convincing evidence; the extremely concerning nature of some of those violations, in particular with respect to the criminal contempt matter; and her behavior during the JQC inquiry, we conclude that removal is the appropriate sanction."
The incident took place early Friday morning around 3 am. Christina was celebrating a friend’s birthday at the Red Martini Restaurant and Lounge on Peachtree Street in Downtown Atlanta.
Christina reportedly saw a woman being attacked by a large man and tried to intervene.
Fulton County Jail records indicate she was charged with simple battery against a police officer. According to the police report, an off-duty Atlanta officer, working security at the lounge, tried to assist a crying woman when Peterson allegedly struck him on the head.
On Friday, Peterson’s attorney, Marvin Arrington Jr., held a news conference where he called for the charges against her to be dropped and demanded the release of all video footage of the incident. He also pushed for the arrest of the man whom witnesses said had assaulted a woman, sparking the altercation.
During the conference, witness Madison Kelley clarified that Peterson had inadvertently hit the officer while attempting to prevent a man from attacking her friend, Alexandria Love.
"She was trying to help. She didn’t mean to hit the officer," Love stated. "I've never been in such a situation before." Kelley added, "She stepped up and helped my friend. This man was three times my friend’s size."
Love expressed disbelief over Peterson's arrest, saying, "She was the only one who helped me."
Christina did not know the woman who she was trying to help Alexandria or Madison. You can see from the body cam footage when APD arrived on scene it was chaotic with multiple people yelling .
On a human level, I understand how intense situations can provoke unexpected reactions. It appears she was genuinely trying to defend someone, but as a judge, she is held to a much higher standard.
While the Georgia Supreme Court states she wasn’t removed from office because of this incident, it seems that the timing is pretty prefect or maybe it’s because Back in 2020, Christina Peterson’s salary was a point of contention.
She was set to earn more than the superior court judges in the county and even more than the justices on the Georgia Supreme Court. The same court that had her removed.
The Board of Commissioners approved the 2021 budget, which included a salary of $124,798 for Peterson. Additionally, she was to receive 100% of the fees from vital records processed in her office, which amounted to $71,400 that year.
Maybe it was ethic violations, possibly it was the arrest, or perhaps some individuals took issue with her pay. Most likely it was a trifecta. Whatever the reason/s Christina Peterson is no longer a judge for Douglas County.
