Squirrel Meets Rat!

  • Wild Gray Squirrel and Cotton Rat meet for the first time nose-to-nose in the deep forest! We all know squirrels and rats are from the same Rodent order - I suspect Squirrels would be insulted if they knew this or that we call them "Tree Rats" sarcastically or affectionately sometimes.

      @@madheretic4423 I have had both Rats and Mice, (and Cats, Dogs, Ducks, Chickens, a Goat, and even a semi-tame possum that climbs into my window each night to beg for food). Mice are by far the least intelligent pet I have had (other than fish, but I do not really see fish as pets, more living ornaments). Mice are nowhere near the intelligence of Rats. Rats are fantastic pets, smart, personable, affectionate varied in personalities (second favourite pet after dogs). Mice are much more slaves to their instincts.

    Rats are AMAZING❤️🐀❤️
    I have fancy rats in my home as pets. I absolutely ADORE the Hairless ratties too! They are VERY intelligent...quite close to having a dog, and mine are litter trained too, just as a cat( just to add...they also are very CLEAN.....cleaning and grooming themselves 10 x more than a house cat).
    They love human attention and interaction with me...each one knows their name, they come when called, and they have distinct, remarkable personalities. They don't bite....they cuddle, and you can even tickle them and they laugh! Truly, they have received such a bad reputation from humans that simply do not like them out of fear, and others who lack basic knowledge regarding these BEAUTIFUL little beings. Squirrels are just a rat with a bushy tail to me ❤️

      nordicbeauty373 I have a rat too. She is a Dumbo rat. I hate when people say rats are gross. I got so sad and was speechless that someone would be so rude about my choices of pets.

    • @glenbe4026
      @glenbe4026 Před 6 lety +9

      Rats are fantastic pets. I am a dog person, but got pet rats because I could not have a dog where I live. They are my favourite pet after a dog. The only drawbacks are a) their lifespan and b) their destructiveness in regards to cables and furniture. Their personalities are as big as dogs. They each like and dislike different foods. Some will come when called, others will know their name but ignore you unless they are hungry lol. Some are smarter (usually the girls), some are dumber. Some are bullies, some are sooks. Some are thieves, some are beggers. They are very much like dogs.

    MyBackyardBirding Do you find that putting out seed for the birds and the squirrels draws rats and mice into your yard, to where it presents a problem for your patio and house? Whether by them adopting your turf to build nests in, as in infestation, or to where they present a problem by bringing ticks and fleas or other parasites?? Is it ill-advised to put out seed (for birds and squirrels) on a full-height table in the yard, when one has a healthy dog that we want to keep that way > healthy without parasites? The dog would not present any risk to the squirrels or birds that might come to eat the seed, as the table is tall while the dog is not. But I do want to keep the dog well, and I don't want to draw ticks, fleas or illness, or infestation by rodents, seeing it's a small yard. The table is in the yard, not on the patio. Please share your best wisdom, Thanks.

    • @MyBackyardBirding
      @MyBackyardBirding  Před 6 lety +1

      Two things come to mind - one is it is usually excess food that lays around or falls on the ground and collects that draws rodents - mostly at night - and two is a lot of debris and brush or other hiding places around and next to the house to harbor them. If they find a steady food source they will try and move in closer if safe havens can be found. So I keep things clean around the perimeter of the house and put about enough food out each day on a platform feeder or like you propose on a table that is sure to be eaten by the birds - don't overfeed. For a longer days supply of food I used a hanging feeder in the tree and a tube feeder on a pole farther from the house that squirrels and other rodents cant get to. You will still get food falling underneath these feeders but other birds usually get it during the day. Go ahead and feed the birds and enjoy !

      I should add that this rat video was taken in the woods way behind the house - not in the yard!

      Thank you for your good replies. I just picked up a second-hand, large ( I'm assuming food-grade > it's manufactured, not hand-painted/pretty and glazed) ceramic platter about 2" deep at most to put on the table as well, with water (about an inch and a half deep) for a bird-bath and drinking. I picked up the 2 kinds of seed that you use, and put them (not too much) into a Pyrex pie-baking dish. As pie-pans have, it has an inclined side, my idea being (probably futile) to keep the seed in one place. The dog is mostly not in the yard, and having lived here for over a year, the squirrels and birds are well aware that a dog lives here, so they're informed. I was going to put out a third dish for just drinking water, but I'm supposing that isn't necessary, that the "bird-bath" is sufficient, as it's the size of a tray. It's close to the hose, so easy to rinse and refill. I've seen at least one squirrel around here, and mature trees filled with birds within sight of my yard, so this should be fun. I used to bird-watch as a child, but you know how we lose sight of such basic joys as the burdens of adulthood steal our attention. So this is good to reclaim. :) Thank you for inspiring us to be proactive in availing ourselves of the beauty and wonders around us.
