IMO if you're just doing it for fun / not stressed about a live show or album release or something (unless that's your goal) - but for me - music is a enjoyable hobby. Well that’s the thing, it’s not entirely unfamiliar. Knowing how a stringed instrument of this type is fretted can go a long way, even if “true” skill on the instrument is lacking you can make nice sounds. Guitar knowledge can be fairly useful on a harpejji but also not directly applicable in its implementation.

    • @MaxOstrovtheheadyhive
      @MaxOstrovtheheadyhive Před rokem +1

      The Osmose is sick! But there are also lots of keyboards which allow you to perform vibrato and more (like sliding your fingers up and down the keys for other effects). Def worth looking into if you love playing keys and want to be as expressive as possible! 😊

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L Před rokem +4

      I definitely got it on some older, less calibrated pianos around friends' houses. There was usually a wiggle room in the key of about a millimetre after "fully actuating" where I could get the hammer to press a little tighter on the string. A little practice and I could wiggle between that tightened state and a normal sustained note without fully disengaging and striking the strings anew. It was a very subtle vibrato but nevertheless!

    • @flatfingertuning727
      @flatfingertuning727 Před rokem

      @@Milamberinx I wonder how the playability would be affected if it used four strings per octave (three frets apart) instead of six? Playing a major scale starting on first fret of any string would use two frets per string, in the pattern 1/3, 2/3, 2/4, 3/4. Repeating that pattern starting on the next string would repeat the scale an octave up (duplicating the shared note). For a given pitch range, tuning in minor thirds would reduce the number of strings needed by 1/3.

    At first I just thought it was a pedal steel with more strings, but that's a really cool combo instrument.
    Marking with the whites and blacks instead of traditional fret markers is especially interesting. I was thinking it was only useful for people more accustomed to pianos/keyboards, but Rob mentioning how it'd let him arpeggiate any scale without learning how it's laid-out on the guitar makes me think it's definitely useful.
    I love how the blue one has a separate bass output like a harp. Although funnily enough while a lot of the comments are saying they want to buy one of these now, the bass sounds from the blue Harpeji have just reminded me of my need to get a bass guitar of my own 😅

    Tom Scott sent me here. It's fantastic to watch experienced musicians picking it up in real time and jamming out a tune at the first time of asking. I'm a big fan of Dream Theater and have loved Jordan Rudess for just as long, my word nearly 20 years. So I'm not new to the Harpejji as a concept, but like the Chapman Stick its a unique sounding instrument that still doesn't have a massive profile. Best thing is as a result of this post, I've found out there was a new Liquid Tension Experiment album released in 2021, it'd been ten years since Mike Portnoy had left DT, so it's been ripe for a reunion for at least 9 years of the intervening decade. I'm just glad that post-pandemic Mike, and John and Jordan have buried the hatchet, to all our benefit.

    I absolutely love the harpejji. Never played one but I fell in love with the idea the second I saw it on another channel. All the accompaniment of a piano but the dynamic expression of a guitar. The only unfortunate thing is it is just so expensive
