Thanks so much for this video. This is by FAR my favorite tales game. It's so good, and it really hits so many strong notes in spite of its age. Vesperia, Abyss, and Grace's are all amazing, and Symphonia is a classic. But Eternia was just magic to me. Man, I miss it...
I know you probably wont see this since the video is so old, but a fun fact about the voice acting is that the voice director for the game, Greg Weber, has done a lot of voice direction for Sega. Most notably he did Crazy Taxi 3, Shinobi, a couple of Phantasy Star games, Puyo Pop Fever, Nights: Journey of Dreams and, most notably, Sonic and the Black Knight. Just thought that was interesting. I really like these Tales videos BTW!
still going great. It's always nice to come back to these and see all the time you spent making the videos really show. You're certainly getting me more interested in exploring more of the series, as I've only played and beaten Phantasia and Abyss.
i loved tales of eternia, the combat near the end of the game, was extremely intense fast paced. the skills get really flashy, and comboing with other characters is rather satisfying, you can lock down enemys infinitely if done properly.
This game is pretty memorable since it's the first PS game that actually gave me a challenge that goes beyond level grinding at max (maxed out at lvl 255). The Cress/Arche and Nereid Regulus ones at Hardcore mode forced me to rely on strategy rather than brute force.
The story's decent, but it's inferior to Breath of Fire 3&4, Suikoden 1&2 and especially Xenogears, the latter's story I think is far superior than even Final Fantasy 7.
It is going to be in interesting to hear what you have to say about Symphonia when you get to it 5 years from now. In all seriousness though, these videos make me really appreciate this series a lot more than I thought. Also while people may have criticized this game for sticking with 2d I think that it was a good decision considering how bright and colorful it looks.
I'm trying to figure out if I should purchase this game. I'm just about finished lunar on ps1 and I'm kind of looking for more of the same. The only tales game I have ever played is tales of berseria, and I LOVED every second of it. The story and the characters and the skits were great... So I was naturally very disappointed when you said the skits were cancelled in this game. I was also considering suikoden II or lunar II or one of the older tales games.
You know what's funny I thought I was getting Eternia the PS1 version we got but what I did get was a big box and it was a Japanese PS1 and it had Eternia but also the first Lunar game and many other great games.
I recommend the SNES or PS1 remake. Both have translations online if you looks for them. There are also SNES reprogrammed carts online you can buy with the English fan translation that will work on a US console.
@@afteryouknowme4642 I guess that's true. I played TOP on Emulators before I played Destiny II on PSP so for me it was the first, but most people in America and Europe didn't get the luxury of playing TOP.
I admit, of the PSX Tales games, this was my least favorite. Don't get me wrong, I liked the game, but there are some nuances with the game that, in the end, makes me rank it under Destiny. Reid has my least favorite movelist, the combat system irks me where many times the special moves don't have much of any impact on enemies. In fact, I avoid using Dragon Demon Chaos because it seems like whenever I connect with it the enemy recovers faster than I can. Last couple of playthroughs I actually put Farah on point because I kinda prefer playing as her. Not to mention that the special hidden extensions cannot be done while spells are used regardless of who uses it, as well as some of Reid's requiring that the move has to actually kill the enemy for it to activate. And there are other skills that, really, are just too awkward to try to perform for it to be worth it, like all the Maxwell extensions. I didn't care for the minigames and the difficulty of the game could get rather bothersome at times (with the aforementioned lack of impact with many of my attacks being a major concern). And I really did not like WHIS. And I agree, pushing and pulling was annoying, moreso than in earlier games. Overall, as I said, I liked the game, but, largely due to certain nuances of the actual combat, I don't like it as much as the other PSX Tales titles.
Lack of skill impact? lol. i get 50 to 100 hit combo easy early on in the game, even more if the enemy is tanky enough. With a little practice most enemies are punching bags you can style on. but hey, maybe im just that good. no complaints for the combat for me, its awesome.
Like many dubbed animes and videogames of that era, I think US English dub of Eternia sounds terrible when compared to the original Japanese one. Apparently someone else felt the same and made an undubbed patch for the PAL PSP release.

I feel the same way!! There’s just something about it’s charm that I’ll never get over.
Eternia was the best in the series
My favorite tales game! Circa 2009 I had so much fun with it on my ps1, oh good times.

Can confirm five years later that he completed a Symphonia retrospective.
"PIKACHUUUH... I mean, uh, Quickie" - Laughed my ass off to that. Insta sub :D
I really need to hurry up and get into the franchise because they all seem like great jrpgs that I just looked over for far too long.
Once I beat Symphonia, I hope to tackle Eternia next. I was able to buy it for $60.00 complete.
Cant wait for you to review abyss
Really cool video

yeah but their gameplay kinda sucks.
here's hoping for a Phantasia X fan translation.
Tales of Phantasia was the first game to introduce the summon spirits as an essential aspect of the story.
Zaku Guriin but ToP wasnt released in North America yet

He'll talk about the game ube version, the better version of the game, since it runs at 60fps instead of 30fps as the ps2 and ps3 versions.
Music at the beginning?
Holy shit, you talk fast. Is there any way to get the japanese audio with english subtitles?
Seems like scxcr likes RPG card games. XD
Are you still planning on making the symphonia episode?
+Félix Léger Rule number 4: Expect episodes to take time to make
😕?
Pokémon should showcase crossover "animals" as super rare pokemon.
