Taking a page out of our playbook with that inverted high alpha! 😀
ya
LOL - hardly - you'll do better ;) Thanks for being here with us! Hope you love it when you get your hands on one - very good, and I bet you'll love it, but nothing even close to the 80mm in terms of controlability.
@@BrianPhillipsRC We actually just filmed it yesterday - and experienced the same alpha lock issues you did, except we forced it into alpha lock by literally shoving the 2200 pack as far back as it could physically go just to see what would happen. We think you'll get a real giggle out of it - we made a true harrier landing with this jet.😅
20:05 Those trees almost became the Tiger Claw Kill Zone 😆🤣 Nice save Brian 👍🏻
LOL - 100%
Great quality plane. Ripped out the landing gear and servo and weighs in at 867g. Tested its Thrust at 1060g. Very good power for a 64mm 4s. Similar thrust to the xfly su27 twin 50mm.
That's a HUGE difference! I love wheels up - wheels down too much ;(
I really enjoyed this one, As always. When mine arrives, the first thing I'll do is ace the landing gear, and hand launch it.
FYI - there is an undocumented reverse thrust capability via a spare yellow lead from the ESC, hidden under the battery shelf. Connecting this lead to a spare channel gives control for reverse vs forward thrust 😀
“Thanks to the camera crew one of the best oN CZcams “ and has the patience of a saint 😀
yes, she does!!!!!!!!!
I just got one via your link Brian! Also - just FYI....I also crashed my EFlite F15 (due to a failed mod) and now I got it all glued back up and ready to fly again. It crashed into the grass and broke in the same way your F15 did! Crash vid and "redemption" flight to follow soon! :)
Glue makes them fly better - LOL ;)
i hand launch mine by grabbing the right side thrust nozzle and angle it up at around 35 degree angle...while trimming it with 5 degrees up elevator...works real easy yet nobody on youtube ever tries it this way...i learned the technique on the eflite f-15 eagle which also has a wide bottom center area.
Hi Brian and camera crew ...just letting you know I have had the Rafale 64 mm on my shopping list and placed the order via your link today, 4/1/24. I learned from another video that the Rafale 64mm has thrust reversing....I enjoy y'all's rc aircraft videos as do other members in our RC club....keep them coming...
PS love your advice given in the video to bring an easy plane to fly first and then try the Rafale...thanks!
I finally got some good weather and will be doing a Maiden on mine today as well!
Sweet! Git-er-done!!!
Another great review! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Marco!
Just maidened my Rafale 80 yesterday and love that jet. The reflex is perfect on it. If i recall yours didn't have reflex.
The 64mm Rafale arrived today. Going for full hand launch and use the reflex to full adavantage for that. Eager to see how the 80 compares to the 64.
We just filmed out Rafale 80mm with Reflex V2 last week, should be publishing soon, possibly this Thursday.
Got one last week to compliment the 80mm Rafales I have. I took out the Reflex and used an AR631. I might get a second to try the Reflex.
How do you like it with the AR631?
@@aragorn318 so far so good, less than a dozen flights. Only one hard landing, my fault. No damage so far.
We used one in our 80mm Rafale from earlier on...soon we'll redo it with the Reflex V2
MESSAGE TO FMS, please 🙏 make more 64mm edfs with this scale detail!
With handlaunch rails and lights too!!!
It is amazingly detailed!!!!
Kinda wish it had leds and retracts, but I suspect it would make her fly heavy ;(
A few mods on this one would make this model better are mod the canard about 10 degrees and/or add a gyro to a full functional canard. Make you look like a pro in high alpha mode and doing those more advanced stall turns and "corn holes" .😁😅
Very good informed and entertaining video. 👍
Thanks ;)
Great video, and advises, truly a different kind of experience for this kind of EDF jet.
Btw, in order to have authority during alpha with EDF jet, is that the jet has vector thrust mechanism, and that would be a totally different experience again 🤭
Great and enjoy this hobby 👍
If you had thrust vectoring, you could impact change in AOA when in Alpha Lock, but you would have a lot of additional complexity in radio system and weight at the tail end.
I will say opposing rudder and aileron does while using only 75% elevator and 80% throttle makes a difference in high alpha on this plane. It unfortunately doesn't get the nose up as much but it will give you a bit more surface to work with.
I will give this a shot! Thanks
Hey, Brian why don’t you review or fly any Delta wings(2channel)?
Fly it to the ground!! Haha for real, don't stop until it hits the deck lol. Great save! Even if it was... Luck... I've done this sooooooo many times. Definitely gets the heart racing! Thank you for this. Always a joy to watch your video's, Brian. Best RC Channel on CZcams!
I know you KNOW, but what I mean is don't let the plane stall into the ground...you gotta make sure you fly her till the wheels are running down the runway.
hard to get out of alpha lock without thrust vectoring and/or more power and then you can get some effective down elevator/down thrust in to level the plane gradually and thrust it forward. I guess when in doubt try high alpha way high up to give bags of recovery time. Great video as it highlights the issues for the unwary, It might be worth sticking a grey painted launch handle/grip, suitably carved like a drop tank or similar out of foam from the box it came in underneath on the centreline near the cg to make hand launching possible if taking the gear off. It should only take about 1/2 an hour and avoid going into alpha lock on launch.
Thanks, and you're right - it's a scary situation, even at altitude, but also exciting for the more "experienced" pilots ;) Usually when I screw up, it's just another day for me, but in this case, it was a new way to screw up - LOL ;)
Funny thing, I have been following your recommendation of bringing an everyday flyer to break the bad juju. Unfortunately the issue on this particular day was I damaged the return spring gimble for rudder by dropping my NX8. Lost a Freewing F35 70mm and my everyday day flyer FMS Avanti day. My stubbornness and arrogance was in fill swing that day.
NOOOOOOOOOOOO! did you get it fixed?!??!
@@BrianPhillipsRC it was a good excuse to get a NX10 😉 and I did send it back to HH and the replaced both gimbals under warranty 😎👍
I'd love to see you do a full series on the Freewing Gripen. Full function canard and an optional vectored thrust unit.
Me too.
Looks awesome 🔥👍🏻
It very good, and a challenge for me, for sure!
Unreal!
I can totally relate to that unintentional hi alpha when ailerons & rudder become ineffective or even reverse, with a tree closeby. That happens with aircrafts that have most of the wing surface at the back ie delta wings or even F15, Mig29 & Su37 too. I am esp prone to that bcz I always fly in straight lines & bring back using only stall turn.
In my experience, in such situations, stalling is never an issue but bringing back is. I bring plane back by thinking of it as a TOP. If you somehow get the base of the top on the other side, the TOP automatically comes back. Differential thrust on twin EDFs does that for me. If tree is a bit away, then, down elevators get no down, gain speed & fly away normally. But same hi-alpha makes landings super easy.
If I had a rudder, it would help too ;) BUT the rudder would be pretty useless in this configuration anyway...thus your idea of DIFFERENTIAL THRUST on a TWIN - which would be very cool too!
@@BrianPhillipsRC With prop plane yes, bcz rudder gets prop wash in hi alpha, but with EDF still no. The same hi alpha issue impacts F14 too in wing swept configuration
Nice looking jet!
She is beautiful, even up close!
awesome jet and setupcool flight
Thanks! I like it, but it is a different flying experience for sure!
Can you add more travel / throw on the ailerons? Adding more rudder certainly helped now you just need more elevator/ailerons throw , maybe help to push the nose down when you Alfa lock. . ? More power would be a awesome upgrade.
I think we did run the Ailerons and Elevator to 150% if I recall...since this is a delta configuration, they're both needed to change the output...but really when a wing stalls like that, there's no air moving over the surfaces to impact change...OR there's less than necessary to over-whelm the attitude of the craft. It's a scary spot to get into, so if you get one, try it REALLY high up, and practice getting OUT of it ;)
Nice 👍 mine should be here tomorrow, I’m gonna notch the bottom to be able to hand launch
I doubt you'll have to notch it, but if you do, use caution - the bottom isn't all that thick, which is also one of the reasons it looks sooooo dang beautiful :)
@@BrianPhillipsRC no other way to really grab it for hand launching, it’s been done by many people already. I’ll post a clip about it
I'm looking to choose my next place and I'm torn between this plane and the horizon 64mm f-15. And would love to know pros/cons and opinions. Just for reference, I'm relatively new to the hobby, have a spare spektrum safe capable receiver, and an appropriate battery for both.
F-15 - WAAAAAAY easier to fly. Not even a question. Good luck!!!

Hi Brian, first of all I watch all your videos, and you are very informative about equipment, and plane's jets, cars, ect... but I have a question about radios... I am pretty new to the hobby, but I have several planes, some of which I won't fly for a while, ( I have the e flight 80mm blue angel jet, and the eflight airshow hero , along with the fms 1100mm typhoon, I also have a fms 1450mm red tail p51... I have two of them hanging in my home office, I also have a little sport cub... Anyway, I currently have a spectrum dx6e radio which I know I can use for these planes, but I want something that has the voice alerts that I hear in your videos.. I really like that feature... can you give me a little insite as to which spectrum radios have that feature... Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work, I really love your videos, they are inspiring me to get my butt out there and fly these planes...
Here's my take on transmitters now...
NX8 is what I've been recommending for a few years, but we're about ready to run out of channels!!! NX10 will buy you a BIT more time, but I think for the VAST majority of planes, the NX8 will work perfectly.
Tx bit.ly/3J05xSj - keep in mind, if you get the NX8 with the Receiver, the AR8020T doesn't have AS3X/SAFE (stabilizer and/or auto-leveling) - BUTTTTT, this isn't as huge an issue, as it was before. Recently, we've been flying a lot of FMS planes with Reflex V2's and they've been plenty good for the majority of planes we've seen them outfit with...so you MIGHT just get the Tx that comes with the Rx - since it's a good value. Just look close at the choices.
NX10 might buy you another couple years of your "primary" transmitter, and for not too much extra cash....while the NX6 will be outgrown almost immediately. NX8 would be my "bear minimum" for now.
Good luck. Remember, this is just my 2 cents, and might not be what you decide, and don't want you to feel pressured to do anything you don't want to do, but DO want you to get the best value when you're ready.
Hello Brian Arrived 1 😁😁😁great airplane,
thanks master!
May I ask if the sound of this plane is good?
Do you have the reverse thrust set up? Sorry if I didn't catch it.
There's isn't thrust reverse on this plane, but you could do it if you swapped out the stock ESC and Reflex for Spektrum SMART or another compatible Reverseable ESC.
...so to be clear, this plane as shown, doesn't have that feature.
@@BrianPhillipsRC unless I have the plane wrong I believe fat guy flies rc said if you connect the single yellow wire to an open channel it can have thrust reverse, he said they don't say it anywhere. Could be with spectrum, not sure, thank you Brian.
Brian the Rafale does have thrust reverse. You need to locate a yellow wire under the battery tray and hook it up to an available channel on your receiver. I got mine over the weekend and found the wire but haven’t set it up yet.
Brian, this jet is on its way to me. Have a question. The only 4 cells I own are 3300mah. Will this fly on those. They are Youme Powers. 318g. Too heavy, or will this thing handle it?
Are you going to do a second thoughts flight with the missiles on and just one drop tank glued to the centre for hand launch
I plan to do a hand launch in our SECOND THOUGHTS, yes.
Brian, I would love to see you transform it by making the canards active.
Any chance of seeing that for a before and after comparison?
If you want active canards, check out the 80mm - we will be RE-reviewing it any time now, it's here in my office, waiting patiently for me to get it done ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC Awesome.. looking forwards to it.
Nice Video! CAn I fly this jet
with a DX6 transmitter? thx:)
You can setup this plane with the DX6, but keep in mind, it's a PNP, so you can set it up with WHATEVER you want.
The sticking point MAY be if you want to use this plane with AS3X and SAFE, WITHOUT the Reflex...which might require FORWARD PROGRAMMING, which I'm not sure if your DX6 will do....if it's an OLDER version of the DX6.
Hope this helps!
I heard a rumor this bird has thrust reverse capability. Good second thoughts topic.
Hello Philip! May I ask you if this plane can take off by hand throw?
My name is Brian Phillips ;) and for sure, you can hand launch the Rafale! The BIGGER one...maybe not, but this 64mm - shouldn't be a problem.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Sorry for the name mistake😖and thanks for your answer!
Did you get this from the fms website ?
Rafale bit.ly/3OqR8zA | bit.ly/3Qhi078
Can u have flaps mixed with aileron
You mean, like a flapperon? Since this is a delta wing, flaps (or flapperons) would just be ELEVATOR...so you kinda NEED Canards to work AGAINST what would be "Flaps"...so the answer is pretty much...NO.
However, this plane is just designed to settle down into a perfect high alpha for landing, and it really does work!
Hi Brian thinking about getting this jet I have flown the dynam hawker hunter marlin saber how does it fly thx mark from the uk.
😀
thanks!
Were you flying in Stabilized mod? or optimized mode?
I almost always fly in Optimized mode when using a Reflex.
Surely it don't have, nor need a mixing board like the 80mm? Being merely 4ch.
We cover all that in the UNBOX, BUILD, RADIO SETUP (releases about 1 minute prior to the maidens) sorry if this caused any confusion.
Could this be a possible first EDF or something else.
Get a habu or a 70mm viper for your first edf the habu is a blast to fly and super stable. Even tho both are stable the habu will fly slower and glide longer. I learned to fly on the habu and had no crashes with it yet. Crashed the viper once ran out of runway and it rolls fast compared to the habu better landing gear more weight. Hope that helps
@@Mao_tse_tung Well my luck the Habu 70mm out of stock. Thanks for you advice.
@@jimmeyer3374 your welcome and usually they come off back order within a month give or take a week. It’s worth the wait imo especially if your flying from grass the habu would be ideal in that case. But if your good at flying faster prop planes the vipers a nice flying jet but it’s 6s and heavier so it fly faster and stalls faster. The habu dosnt really stall it more or less just drops the nose and levels out where the viper will drop a wing tip and will certainly stall at lower speeds if not careful.
@@Mao_tse_tung Thanks I might look at the Freewing 64mm Banshee with reverse thrust
A great affordable first edf is an Xfly Ta7 64mm. Sounds awesome and very light. Can fly from 2200 to 3200. I use 3200 and have a 4 min timer. Fly hard and still land with 30% left. Also the xfly su27 50mm twin and eflite f15 64mm are decent first edf.
A mean looking plane.
Looks even better up close too!
Hey Brian! Great video! Did you try 3200 mah maybe?
I'll be trying the 3200 tomorrow with a hand launch
@@M4rkmcc21 great! Let me know please :)
Good luck
I didn't, but think it would work okay.
what is Better?
Which - compared to what?
Looks awful tempting to add to my hobby. Just wish it had a touch more power to pull out of the high alfa without killing throttle and hopefully not crashing it.
You might just want to hold off for the 80mm - it's way better in that regard, but they're both relatively "slow" for being jets. Strange, and different flying style compared to other edf jets
Nice jet I own it but no loops possible Underpowered Retracts will add weight it will be worseGood for high alpha training
Fms please make jets flying like jets!
WE need more edf GRASS ops! US poor pilots can't afford asphalt/Concrete!🤷♂️
I've also heard that this plane performs way better without gear...grass coming soon.
Delta wing jets fly much better tail heavy Brian. you could get away with shoving that battery back another inch and half and it will fly much much better on that jet. Trust me
after watching you review the Rafale...
hand me X-ACTO knife....
LOL
