      @@LordSandwich27 Exactly, it so funny how greek government and most of the greeks still call it Constantinople, all the while it's modern name is of greek origin anyway. Show really how for them it's not really about city being greek historically, but it being centre of the greek Empire like some sort of sick nostalgia.

    Looking back on this video im reminded that the population mechanic could still have used some extra coding. It makes no sense that colonies cannot lose pops to emigration. While i realize the age of Slavery was mostly over especially with the UK putting an end to the trade i feel there could have been at least some movements ie the note about the King of Congo being worried about the loss of pops to slavery.
    On a side note while modding the game i came across a mechanic where pops are semi random at the start of the game to an extent. Some smaller pockets of pops move around to neighbouring provinces at the start of the game, would have liked that to continue later into a campaign.

    • @enochinri
      @enochinri  Před 5 měsíci +2

      I think there should be definite like "colonial policies" that a nation can put into place for given states similar to eu4 (assimilation/expulsion/financial extraction/prestige) I don't think any game developer would do that for this time period though because of certain sensitive historical events. They can get away with it in EU4 because it isn't so controversial I guess. In crimeamod pops move between colonial states but not into full states or full emigration out of the country which I think is really cool. With this there is a whole other conversation to be had about new people groups created by colonialism that I am interested what PDX does in Vic 3, especially with the hybrid culture stuff they started in CK3.

    Saying the Kongo kings didnt “like slavery” is totally false. The kings of Kongo formed their state apperatus around slavery and the slave trade. It was the main source for their wealth. They intentionally rejected modern technological advancements, since they, in their minds, didnt help them with their slave based economy.

    • @MeadowGaze
      @MeadowGaze Před 9 měsíci

      I think it depended on the king but it would make sense a particularly devout actual subscriber to Christian humanitarianism and not just a pragmatist would kinda take issue with Triangle Trade.

    • @enochinri
      @enochinri  Před 9 měsíci +2

      We have primary, sources written by King Afonso I describing the exact reasons he didn't like slavery in his kingdom:
      worldhistorycommons.org/excerpt-letter-nzinga-mbemba-portuguese-king-joao-iii
      "And we cannot reckon how great the damage is, since the mentioned merchants are taking every day our natives, sons of the land and the sons of our noblemen and vassals and our relatives, because the thieves and men of bad conscience grab them wishing to have the things and wares of this Kingdom which they are ambitious of, they grab them and get them to be sold; and so great, Sir, is the corruption and licentiousness that our country is being completely depopulated, and Your Highness should not agree with this nor accept it as in your service. And to avoid it we need from those Kingdoms no more than some priests and a few people to reach in schools, and no other goods except wine and flour for the holy sacrament. That is why we beg of Your Highness to help and assist us in this matter, commanding your factors that they should nor send here either merchants or wares, because it is our will that in these Kingdoms there should not be any trade of slaves nor outlet for them."

    • @historyafficionado478
      @historyafficionado478 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@enochinrivery interesting, although after some further research it seems things are more complicated, the Portuguese mostly went to Afonso’s vassals to keep with their demand of trade and Afonso tried many times to take control of the slave trade and not totally end it, as it is shown in some of his actions,as he kept many slaves under his command from his conquests to the South, it is also interesting to note that he ended up relenting to the Portuguese demands due to the economic strain it would put the
      Kongolese economy under. Interestingly, he condemned thePortuguese mostly for the illegal slaves that were being bought and tried to control the situation by creating a comission to analize if the slaves were legal or not. He also appealed to the Vatican who at the time decided not to intervene in the matter.

    • @historyafficionado478
      @historyafficionado478 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@enochinriA good I found about the entire situation was this one. From a Millersville university article: Yet these positions are probably not true. African leaders were not necessarily forced into the slave trade through their inabilities, or the inability of their country to prevent it,(1)and neither were they necessarily simply cruel dupes of foreign traders who sold their own people out for short term gains. African leaders clearly participated voluntarily in the slave trade, but this does not mean that they did so without recognizing the ethical problems that the trade presented.

    • @enochinri
      @enochinri  Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@historyafficionado478 Yeah in King Leopold's Ghost the author didn't go into a ton of detail about this, the main parts he did were ones I mentioned in the video, thanks for looking into it more. I sort of suspected one of the reasons he disliked it was because it let his vassals get access to firearms which obviously would make them harder to control... It's not all about philanthropy. Also if you are a newly Christian king over a majority pagan Kongo, I suspect slavery is a great means by which to get rid of political/religious rivals. The author mentioned something about appeals to the Vatican but said they were "intercepted" by the Portuguese, whatever that means.
      What interests me most from Afonso's letters is when he says the country is being "depopulated" it seems to suggest to me that there was some recognition of the long term negative demographic effects of slavery.
      I appreciate you drawing out the nuance, history is rarely black and white. King Leopold's Ghost feels more like a long form newspaper article than a history book, more footnotes would have gone a long way toward showing nuance. It makes the irony of what happened to his family members even more powerful.
