Shouldn't 256 GB for $200 work out to $0.78 per GB added, rather than $1.28. And it gets cheaper as you add more. For 2TB it will be 800/(2048-256) = 0.45 per GB

I've transitioned over to using the base m1 mini as my daily driver and I am floored by how well it has handled everything I've thrown at it. I mainly do graphic design work and 8GB does not appear to be a severe limitation. I'm usually hovering around 6.5GB utilization with all my programs open; most of which aren't even optimized for the new chip yet. And to be honest, $700 is inexpensive enough that I won't be upset if I find out I need to exchange this for the new model after a couple of years. This is a first generation product after all, and I have hope that we'll see some great performance boosts with m2 and beyond.
I got it last year. Amazing computer. It is a really good deal for what you're getting and I came from a 2012 Dual Core Mac mini and it a little bit trippy to see a Mac that looks EXACTLY the same perform so much better. M1 has been really good for my use which is a lot of online meetings and binge on YT and Vc'ing on Discord. It checks all the boxes and is probably my favourite piece of tech that I have ever used. Highly recommend even in early 2022...
We need more of these. All youtubers are always “here’s how good video editing is!” which normal people don’t care much about. They want a very fast secure machine for easy tasks and school and work.
Enjoyed hearing your very good comments on using the M-1 mac mini for regular everyday usage. Both current mac mini models make excellent everyday computers and so do current iMac models. What, I tell others for example is that the 27-inch iMac is an All-in-One system (CPU, 5k monitor, keyboard, and mouse) when something breaks you have to bring the whole unit in for repair. While, with the mac mini when something breaks it only effects your CPU device your display and the rest of your system remain in good working order. As for myself, during the 2000's, I was into the white 20-inch G4 iMac, the white 20-inch G5 iMac, and the white 24-inch Intel iMac. But, since the mac mini was re-designed in 2010, I have been only using a mac mini paired with an Apple 27-inch cinema (none thunderbolt) display and loving it.
I've had my MacMini for almost a year. It is my first venture into the Mac world. It has been a real learning experience and I'm admittedly slow at it but this has been so rewarding thanks to so many producers of videos on Macs and Apple items. I also switched from an Android to and iPhone so it has been equally challenging but so worth it. I now understand why so many people love Apple products. So intuitive and interoperable. Thank you for your help with so many wonderful videos. I'm loving it.
I was looking for a small computer for second desktop setup. I started with Intel NUCs and other small Windows/Linux system. But it quickly became apparent that the Mac Mini was a better choice. It was cheap at $649 USD, fast, and had TB 3/4 ports for adding external storage cheaply. I have only had it a few days, but so far it is exceeding my expectations.
I really enjoy how you dont spend half of your videos bashing the device you’re reviewing. You keep a positive tone while still telling all we need to know(good and bad)
I'm a life long windows user. I'm contemplating on getting the M1 Mac Mini Base model simply because of the extremely low energy consumption. To explain myself: I live in Germany. Here in Germany you pay about 0.33€/kWh, or $0.39/kWh, which is insane. So, even idle/low power tasks, which is the majority of tasks for my PC and also the majority of time the PC is on, will cost me several hundred of Euros every years. If I were to use this low energy Mac Mini for all those tasks, well let's just say, within 1~2 years, the saved up money would balance out what I paid upfront for the Mac lol.
I have a 2012 i7 Mini which is on 24/7 and with your calculation it would cost 15€/yr on power (I do sell 2000kWh of solar back to the grid, so I pay nothing for electricity).
This is my first Mac and I absolutely love it. It has taken over everything in place of my very expensive PC. Learning curve but MacMost channel have been a life saver. I love you videos as well. You are the reason I bought the m1 mini
I have had a Dell for years. The rest of my family have Macbooks and a mini. My new Mac Mini will be delivered tomorrow ! I'm going from Windows to Mac.
I am a technology girl (when the budget affords) and I'm an digital artist, 3D artist, & photographer, but not interested in doing videos. A machine like this is exactly what I've been waiting for! I'll line it up with 2 large displays (or one large display for my work and a smaller display for the tools), a nice Wacom digitizing tablet, and I used both a trackball and a separate Apple touchpad. More external storage works fine for me (fortunately!), but I'll definitely spring for the 16MB of memory and would take more if I could afford it.
In Brazil, the price of a Mac Mini (8GB - 256GB) is at USD 1,700 / USD2,000 and Mac Studio starts at USD 4,580. Government taxes put a heavy burden on all Brazilians. Most Brazilian consumers will buy Apple products importing them directly from US or they buy from independent sellers. So your opinion makes us save a lot of money, and that's exactly what I did. I've bought the Mac Mini M1 with the basic configuration and imported one SATA NVMe 1TB from AliExpress. Thank you! You are awesome! God bless you!
I have a 2012 Mac Mini, I use it for 7 years for general stuff (youtube, ms office, email, web, python/perl). Compared to my windows7 then10 laptop, this Mac Mini is stress and maintenance free. Once every year, I clean its fan, and thats all, it just works whenever I need it, and it does not give me headaches with unnecessary pop up bubles like Windows do.
Mine is late 2014 but the same. Works well though the speaker has recently gone funny. A new computer every 6 or 7 years is not a bad deal though. Thinking...
@@jamespike8279 I take off the bottom plate of the computer. Then I unscrew a few screws and take out the fan. Then blow the dust out of it with compressed air, and put back together. The connector of the fan is very delicate.
i bought a used Mac Mini on Craig's list for $200.00. I hooked it up to my smart tv, bought a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse. It is fabulous. I can save pictures I see on the TV, save all my youtube subscriptions and instead of having to type with a remote I have a keyboard. My used Mac Mini works fantastic. it is a 2014 model. You may want to add a remote hard drive because Mac Mini's have very little storage. You cannot upgrade this one but for $200 you can always buy another. Mac Mini sits on shelf on TV stand.
I swapped a 17" 8-core i9 for the MacMini-M1 and am very happy. I even got some money back as I sold the intel mac for less than the cost of the M1 MacMini. However - the M1Mini is much larger than is necessary.
I am thinking about buying this but I’m just an everyday user. Nothing technical, no music producer, no video editor. I just thought that this is not just a pc but an investment based on the prices previous mini’s are getting. My thought being this is the only computer I’ve seen that doesn’t lose all its value immediately after buying it.
Thing is, I'm approaching this as a professional whose profession doesn't require any more CPU or graphics horsepower than a casual user -- that is to say, I'm a novelist. My pro apps include things like Scrivener, Ulysses, OmniOutliner, and DevonThink Pro. Not exactly resource hogs. That said, as a novelist, I'm also on a tight -- TIGHT! -- budget. So I'm really hoping the base model M1MM will do what I need it to do without the need to spring for that spec bump to the memory or storage.
I just purchased the Mac Mini M1 with 8GB RAM/256 and I just need it for everyday use for WFH, administrative tasks. This review has eased my previous worries! 10/10 and a follow!
I've been doing research into the new Macs and I have to say that your videos have given me a much better look at the M1 Chipset. I'm considering the Mac Mini as my workhorse for video, as I'm a content creator for a children's podcast show. I've been getting by with my 2015 Macbook Air for remote teaching (thanks COVID), but it's lacking for video. In either case, thank you for your honest reviews on this product! I have a much better idea of what to expect now!
Moved from a high end PC to a 8GB/512 M1 MacMini almost a month ago connected to a LG 49 IPS Ultrawide and have really enjoyed it as my daily driver I didn't want to over spend on the first attempt at going mac so I went min spec but with a bump on storage (I can get by with 500gb internal +NAS) the expectation/hope is they bring out a performance version of the mini sometime in 2021 if all goes well between now and then I will fully spec that unit out and this will either be sold off or find its place behind a TV as I love using the MacMini's as Media Centre PC's, I think the silence is the hardest part to get used to.
Good honest review, just what is needed, especially the upgrading of external storage & pricing, well done. You’re definitely selling this to me, thanks.
I bought my m1 Mac mini about a month after I bought my m1 MacBook Pro 13 and I'm absolutely loving both of them. I am replacing my 2019 MacBook Pro 16, which was incredibly loud (like a jet engine) even while running apps like Microsoft Word and Safari. The Mac mini is PERFECT for every day users.
Great video, sir! I received my mac mini with 8 gigs of ram and Final Cut Pro installed, but I decided to return it for the 16 gig/512 version, and i think that will be just right. I plan to keep this mini for several years. Great computer--Thanks again!
8gb was not enough for me. Did not even use lots of apps but processes in the background often kept ram at 6 gb and app memory was filled many times. Recently sent it back so I can get one with 16 gb instead. This should work for me.
The youtube videos fooled me to think 8 gb was enough working with big apps on.. I should have made a video to show my problems with 8 gb. Apple support was contacted but it did not get solved and to be on safe side I will go for 16 gb which I recommend to everybody.
@@TechGearTalk Also - thank you so much for focusing on the "typical user" on your video. I get so sleepy hearing about "Geekbench this" and "video editing that". I for more out of your video than so many others! :)
Couldn't be happier with my M1 Mac Mini!!! I'm a graphic designer for a printing company who does ZERO video, but a TON of straightforward pre-press production artwork in Illustrator, PhotoShop and InDesign for PRINT. For the price you couldn't possibly get a better value. I use my 16GB RAM / 250GB SSD model every day and absolutely love it. Almost all software is cross-platform and seamless nowadays. Can't imagine a better 'everyday use' computer for anyone on the planet. Just my opinion!
I have one too, I use it sometimes. It’s great for web browsing, word processing, programming, and other light work. I prefer my 16 inch MacBook Pro for 3D rendering and Final Cut Pro
@@mackenziealberto3263 I love it! This is my first Mac-based desktop...little bit of a learning curve but so far nothing that’s been too difficult to figure out. I wish I would’ve made the jump along time ago. The M1 Mini is so smooth and quick as well...money well spent.
The new Mac Mini M1 is the PERFECT computer for most people. You don't even need to go for the 16gb model or the model with more internal storage. Get the base model and an external hard drive. Unless you are running lots of windows and programs at once the extra ram isn't even necessary.

I think for those working from home more (like myself), and have been working off a laptop for over a year. There couldn’t be a better product. Really informative video and confirmed my purchase! Thank you for this
I have been using a Mac Mini since 2016 and I have been using it for graphic design - running Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop (sometimes all at once). This Mini is a workhorse but I felt over the years as apps are updated (Adobe, Microsoft Office) they also get demanding in terms of memory usage, so I wanted to upgrade from a dual-core Intel to this M1 8-core beast. So far so good, worth the money, but I hope very soon, Adobe would have a native version of their apps running in Apple silicon rather than having Rosetta translate it. This small machine is GREAT! The only downside I am experiencing is the wifi connection drops and it's Bluetooth connection with my apple keyboard and mouse. I hope this isn't a hardware issue because compared to my MBP, I am not experiencing those (both are already running in Big Sur though).
@@yashas1322 I cannot say though because even with my first mac mini, I racked it up to 16gb RAM and it handles running adobe programs quite well. Usually I would run illustrator and photoshop together or indesign plus a browser and other apps while working. I think 8GB can handle it except for video rendering programs. You may experience lags but not as bad as a crash
Quite honestly, I have a 2017 13" Macbook Pro with 256GB of internal storage. Now, while I do have a 4TB external drive, it has been a pain to not have 512GB SSD at the minimum. In my opinion, also, 16GB of RAM is a MUST. Future proof that thing. I know this is a new architecture, but the average mac user keeps their system for at least 5 years.
If you are not doing anything crazy, OWC has NEW 2018 Intel i3 Mac Minis, 128GB SSD with 8GB of memory, on sale right now for $469. I just picked one up, should be here in a day or two... I had them bump the ram up to 16GB and the shipped price for a brand new Mini was $549. I have external storage, and plan on using this in my entertainment center, more like a server. Best price I could find for a new Mac Mini. If you do not know who OWC is, they have been around for years, I have been using them since the early 90's, great outfit for your Mac needs. I also picked up a lightly used Apple track pad for $87, they retail for $129. A wireless keyboard from Apple, $99. Everything has free shipping.
I decided to get the M1 Mac mini when Apple indirectly confirmed that there will be no new Macs this year, as I don't want to wait another 4-5 months for the M2 Mac mini. Don't think I'll regret it as this thing is fast for all my daily task, and the M2 mini will likely see a price increase anyway. It is my first Mac, and I really love how silent it is, and the overall smooth experience. The one improvement I would love to see is more USB ports, especially at the front, as my unit sits under my monitor and its a hassle having to reach to the rear to plug in temporary devices such as USB drives.
Thank you for the Review. I am using my Mac Mini M1 for my Interior/ architectural design project. Using a sketchup new version while listen to music from youtube. It still working fine, not much delay. I also owned Mac Pro 5,1 2x3.46Ghz Xeon with ddr3 64GB and Radeon Rx580 8GB which I considered as such a beast desktop but compare to my Mac mini, I very satisfied with the Mac mini.
I’m picking up my Mac mini Friday!!! Trading in my awful 2019 MacBook Pro which been a 14 month nightmare with 5 restores. Was given the lemon option to return it for a replacement, but declined… hurry up Friday !!!!!
This is exactly the video I needed! For someone who just wants a decent Mac without crazy pricing and not used for video editing, it's perfect - thank you!
Great video and thorough. I have (and still use) the previous generation MacMini so I can say this from experience. Without the ability to add RAM I am unable to play a lot of video games on Steam and tends to lag a lot because of the lack of memory. The ability to add RAM over time would have been very helpful and increase the longevity of the device. So I really like your overall message of "upgrade now or forever hold your peace".
I got a Mac mini and it’s blazing fast for everyday use. I am not a creative user. I used it for a couple of weeks and I needed to play some PC games so I switched to my i9 PC with 2070 super. I cannot say for gaming but you definitely felt other things are compatibility slower than the Mac mini. This is crazy.
I've found that I use my current imac pretty casually, mainly online and streaming, not nearly as intensive as I was years ago, so I'm wondering if getting the imac mini and investing in a large, quality monitor makes more sense? it sounds like it might...
I've had a M1MM for a few weeks and am very happy. No Bluetooth drop out others have reported. I did add a few items that for me were necessities. The AGBTEC USB-C dock with a hard drive enclosure, and an OWC USB-C TYPE-C Thunderbolt hub. Both of these are affordable options to help out with the limited port options on the M1MM, as well as add a lot of cheaper external storage. Both of these two devices function well.
You don’t need a monitor if you have an even relatively modern tv!. I have a 2017 55” Sony led tv, I plug my M1 Mac mini, MacBook Pro and windows laptop into the various HDMI ports and all work perfectly.. no latency, sharp 4K picture. Don’t listen to any marketing bullsh1t that you need a dedicated monitor.. use your TV.
Another excellent review, from you setting out the pros and cons. One accessory that I would like your opinion on is a square box which gives more connections. There are some which contain a compartment , underneath, to take an ssd drive which I could use for Apple Time Machine. The square box matches the same size as the Mac Mini and sits underneath.
I sold my iMac and MacBook Pro recently and move to Linux for daily use. However, I've had problems with Applications such as iTunes (I still kept my iPods and iPhone) and currently thinking of getting a Mac mini. I never use it before and this is a very helpful video in my decision-making. Thanks!
First time here, and WOW what a great video. I’ve watched several videos going over similar topics, but yours is by far the best and most relevant for my use case and the questions I’ve had. Subscribed and sold! Ordering my M1 Mini next payday 🙌🏾
I got one to be a dedicated Photoshop/digital photography computer. I presently have three computers at my desk plugged into my monitor - my personal Linux box, my company mac, and my digital photography mac. I got the 16 gig RAM, and I have an external 10 TB HDD for photo storage, backed up to Amazon Photos (which is unlimited with no compression because I'm a prime user). If I want to switch from one to another, I switch which input is coming through on my monitor, and I unplug the keyboard from one box and plug it into another (my mouse dongle and a USB hug for random use are plugged into the keyboard).
I have not had those issues - but a lot of people have reported them. I am having a strange thing now where it says it doesn't recognize the Apple Magic Keyboard. It works perfectly, but you get a prompt saying it's not recognized when you restart. So like I said, there isn't an actual issue, but it says there is... 😂🤣
Thanks for your info on the Mac Mini. My online income tax return requires a Microsoft platform to operate and I am wondering if it might be an option to download the necessary software and either install this on an external storage device or install it on the Mini? (From an old timer)
You may already have an answer since you posted, but try Parrallel app, the install virtual instance of Windows within the app. VMware is another good well known optin but M1 chip is not supported yet.
This computer is amazing, everyday I love it more, I push the power button and I barely have time to sit in my couch before this little thing is in the password screen. I feel everything he does it's fast an reliable
Really informative - I have watched a lot of M1 videos but you boil it down to the essentials for an average person like me. I have a late 2014 8GB RAM and 1 TB HDD (used less than 300GB but no SSD) with Big Sur now but its getting very slow with the beachball showing up often or opening software. Was wondering if I should switch to M1 or connect an external SSD as system drive. Any suggestions? I am not a heavy user - mostly Excel, Word and Photos. Now that I am retired, I would like to learn some video editing, categorise my 2-3,000 pictures and write more intensively .
I think your biggest set back is the HDD instead of SSD. I've a 2013 Macbook pro and its still hella quick at 16gb ram and 512GB SSD. I recommend upgrading to any with SSD for sure.
Ordered the base model 639 with tax. the excitement I have for this system is comparable to when I first heard of the Intel Core 2 Duo's leap in performance and built a custom PC using the Core 2 Duo E6600 :-)

I’m holding out for a 16’ MacBook Pro slated for the end of 2020. I’m currently using a 2013 MacBook Air that replaced my 2011 Mac Mini. Both of which I love, but they definitely show their age.
I assume you meant 2021 because I don't believe Apple will release anymore new Mac until next year. Rumors have it that it would be 14" and 16" macbooks with new design!

EDIT: what happens when you do math late at night? You get it wrong. The correct math is:
512 total: adding 256 = 200/256 = 0.78/GB
1TB total: adding 768 = 400/768 = 0.52/GB
2TB total: adding 1792 = 800/1792 = 0.45/GB
Although the relationship I mentioned was wrong, the logic behind getting external storage holds up.

I super appreciate the feedback and insight! Thanks so much for being part of and contributing to the channel!
Once you go Mac, you never go back. :)
Well done. Non stressful voice.
So glad it was helpful. Appreciate the kind words and support 🙏🏻
To explain myself:
I live in Germany.
I just bought the M1 Mini from Costco for $600. I hope it isn't a "pallet fell off the back of a truck" special.
This is my first Mac and I absolutely love it. It has taken over everything in place of my very expensive PC. Learning curve but MacMost channel have been a life saver. I love you videos as well. You are the reason I bought the m1 mini
So glad the move you made has worked well for you and that I was able to play a small part in helping you! Thanks for being part of the channel!
I have had a Dell for years. The rest of my family have Macbooks and a mini. My new Mac Mini will be delivered tomorrow ! I'm going from Windows to Mac.
Once you go Mac, you never go back. :)
Thinking...
How do you clean the fan?

Actually, you can grab one of those new M1's (Air, Pro, or mini) a little less. I've seen deals, ~$50 off, all over the last few weeks or so!
Definitely - especially with a edu discount!
I'm like "is this thing on?" Appreciate the input!
Great computer--Thanks again!
ok I am gonna buy 16G now, thank for your comment.
Your video made me opt for 512GB of storage rather than the 1TB option, that's easily $200 in savings. Thanks!
Purchased the M1 mac Mini back in November and I LOVE how quiet it is... I have the 8/512 option and it seems perfect for my work flow.
Super appreciate you sharing. The silence is noticeable and appreciated for sure!

I super appreciate you sharing this with the community 🙏🏻.
I use Mac Mini (early 2012) in my daily work, it's still usable nowadays.
I have one too, I use it sometimes. It’s great for web browsing, word processing, programming, and other light work. I prefer my 16 inch MacBook Pro for 3D rendering and Final Cut Pro
One thing never compared is how clean and logical the Mac user interface is compared to Windows. It’s just elegant by comparison.
and it's almost the main reason i bought a mac. ;)
I got the 16g upgrade just to be on the safe side along with the 256g SSD. Still under a $1,000...pretty damn good for a Mac.
How do you like it so far? Thinking of getting the same thing :)
@@mackenziealberto3263 I love it! This is my first Mac-based desktop...little bit of a learning curve but so far nothing that’s been too difficult to figure out. I wish I would’ve made the jump along time ago. The M1 Mini is so smooth and quick as well...money well spent.
@@TJDawgs72 Do you still like it? I am thinking about going 16 gb plus 512

Is 8gb ram enough for graphics intensive tasks
I really like this guy's approach, and he's very informative. Kinda freaks me out how much he looks like Ross Gellar, though...

Heck yes! I got one three weeks ago and don't regret a thing about it. SO much faster than my old Intel iMac and blows away the old Mini.
This is an amazing (and rare) perspective. Thank you so much :)

I'll sum it up for everyone: "HELL YEAH!"
Liking the video even before it starts!😂
I liked this comment before getting to the end 🙏
Thank you for the Review. I am using my Mac Mini M1 for my Interior/ architectural design project. Using a sketchup new version while listen to music from youtube. It still working fine, not much delay. I also owned Mac Pro 5,1 2x3.46Ghz Xeon with ddr3 64GB and Radeon Rx580 8GB which I considered as such a beast desktop but compare to my Mac mini, I very satisfied with the Mac mini.

It makes a perfect sense, if you are going take more memory, then more likely will keep the machine longer. Got it?
That actually makes sense. Thanks.

One accessory that I would like your opinion on is a square box which gives more connections. There are some which contain a compartment , underneath, to take an ssd drive which I could use for Apple Time Machine.

It isnt without an external software-run monitor output dock
My 2012 Mac Mini work fine . Got a CD burner. 500 gigs hd. 4 gigs of ram. Plugged into the 42” Roku .
As Sudeep pointed out, the math has been flipped (unintentionally, I'm sure), so the real figures are: $200 / 256 GB = $ 0.78 / GB, $400 / 744 GB = $ 0.54 / GB, $800 / 1744 GB = $ 0.46 / GB.
Yup - I updated the pinned comment. External vs internal logic still remains. Appreciate you contributing 🙏🏻
Are you having the Bluetooth and WiFi issues some people are reporting with the M1 Mac Mini?

Now that I am retired, I would like to learn some video editing, categorise my 2-3,000 pictures and write more intensively .
I think your biggest set back is the HDD instead of SSD.
