Max Lorenz is superb in this role(as he is in all wagnerian repertoire!!!).This must be one of the best ever version of this inmortal opera I heard!!!Bravo!!!

In my opinion Lorenz is the best Tannhäuser, he is capable of transmitting such soul-deep desperation in his voice! No surprise, considering his biography -- being an indispensably great singer was literally the only way for him to keep himself and his family safe during the Nazi regime (he was homo- or bisexual and his wife was Jewish). Such a shame there isn't a full recording!
Melchior and Lorenz are the best Wagnerian tenors by far!!!!! I only wish there were more recordings by Lorenz... I find it almost impossible to listen to any but these two. Once I had heard these two all modern Heldentenöre were ruined to my ears...

I've got a CD, a Tannhaüser with Lauritz Melchior, and as bonus, these excerpts with Lorenz. My God, I like far far better the bonus!!

Artur Rother is the conductor here. I believe this is the best Tannhäuser.
