- With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's final character announced, I binged a lot of the major promotional material for the series alongside every newcomer trailer from Brawl onwards. Not the usual course for my content, but I figured I'd compile all the "big/major" reveals/trailers the series brought to us over the 20+ years in 4K as well. Not sure you were told this in the comments already, but there's some clear audio issues listening to this. Like it's in Stereo, but can only hear the left speaker.
When you realize that smash 4 begins at 9 minutes, it shows how promotion for smash brothers has changed over the years.
Kids will never know the feeling of waking up and checking the Smash Dojo, not knowing if the main event would be "SONIC THE HEDGEHOG IS JOINING THE ROSTER!" or "This is what the Franklin Badge does".
@@robofistsrevenge3288 I remember those days and it was awesome, also when you go into the game and have no idea who is in the game and shocked when you see the challenger incoming. I remember playing some levels from subspace after beating Tabbu and when going through the door I see toon link, then a friend told me there were two more characters like that, I was so excited.
And almost an hour is dedicated to JUST Ultimate
Half the video’s every other Smash game, largely Smash 4, & the second half is just Ultimate, haha.

God, imagine being in that room when they first unveiled Melee, feeling that immense hype and still being completely unaware of the amazing things get to come. Truly a magical time.
I don’t think that many people wore hyped at the time. Since the n64 version only came out 2 years before it
@@zwillscoopchannel9689 maybe not the amount of people who get hyped nowadays, but that was an E3 conference, so that room had to have been filled with people who were at least somewhat excited to see whatever Nintendo was about to announce.
Not to mention leaks weren’t nearly as prevalent back then, so the announcement would’ve taken them completely off guard. I’ll bet they had no idea Smash was going to be anything more than a one-off franchise.
That and the e3 reveal of Twilight Princess are still in my top 10 most hype moments, the Gamecube era was really magical

@@GlowingCross Agreed. Some may argue it was Snake because he was revealed first. However, in my own opinion, Sakurai did that as a favor to his buddy Hideo Kojima. However, Sonic was the point where people were like, "Could Mega Man be in it? Cloud? Banjo & Kazooie? GOKU?!?" (I mean, I'm kidding on that last one, but you get the idea.) Almost every third party was fair game at that point.
The smash 4 reveal is heavily underrated for me.
It debuted the smash letter and the splash screens. Definitely one of my favorites

I really appreciate how the trailers were revealed over time. I don't think we'll ever see something as hype as these character reveals, at least not for a while.
You know what I find really crazy? Didn't Sakurai opt for the character trailers because he noticed that people were sharing Brawl's subspace emissary cutscenes online? Think about it. The reason why he didn't really make any game specific cutscenes after Brawl (i.e. a story mode similar to subspace) was because he thought that "they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game" if people just saw them out of context. So instead of using a cinematic budget inside the game itself, he used it to deliver us these well-crafted trailers directly through the internet. He utilized the same medium that fans did... to give those same fans unique clips to get them excited for newcomers.
That's makes a lot of sense and, if true, is a pretty smart move by Sakurai to convert something he didn't like into a tool to generate he could use to get fans excited.
Exchanging an extended story mode for good looking and enjoyable trailers with the CGI is a sacrifice I will take ten fold.

@@Kirbo710 “he didn’t ***really*** make any game specific cutscenes.” I’m aware World of Light has them, but there’s only a sparse couple of them. One of which that got shown off in a direct itself, so Sakurai was still focused on not providing them exclusively through the game.
It's a dumb reason, but the character trailers still kicked ass. We could've just had them AND the cutscenes. Not sure why he didn't consider they couldn't just, not watch them.

@@pooky-changaming4089 I think if they are gonna make a new Smash, they are going to reboot the series. Like cutting off 80% of the roster and make something new. Because there is no point in even trying to match Ultimate.

ending it off with Sora of all characters really shows how committed Sakurai and his team are as creators, they could've picked anyone else but ending it with a character nobody ever expected but did want is just a chad move

@@cubineldon't know if this is hyperbole or not, but I'm pretty sure most people didn't know that it was leaked or thought the leak was fake (you know, this is the Internet, a place where people lie often) when they watched the trailer. So it was a surprise to almost everyone who's knowledgeable of how strict Disney is with their copyright

Cloud, Ridley, K. Rool, Steve, Sephiroth and ESPECIALLY Sora were also heavily doubted upon for Smash that’s what makes their inclusions feel so meaningful and special.

Idk about those time frames, but I could only imagine how it'll be like to show smash ultimates character to 2014/2015. Everyone would crap their pants seeing sora who was more popular at the time imo.
The “everyone is here” segement in E3 2018 is the best thing to come out of smash imo. I couldn’t wipe my smile off my face for 15 minutes after that.

Weird that the whole “smash invitation” was only ever used once prior to Ultimate, and that it wasn’t for a major third-party character, but for Villager. Simply because you get letters in the mail in Animal Crossing.
Crazy to think how much weight the “letter with the crosshairs seal” holds now.
it all starts with a funny little commercial set to Happy Together by The Turtles, and then it ends with me sobbing while scream-singing Simple and Clean. Every trailer has had its own charm individually, but when it's all put together like this, you're really hit with how far everything's come over the years. From 1999 to 2021, thank you Mr. Sakurai.

I like how in little mac’s intro they show him actually being little by comparing his height to samus and also I like how they made a joke about him having a bad recovery
Every one of these was iconic. Doesn't matter if the character was highly requested or someone few people wanted; every single reveal was amazing.

11:05 is and always will be the hypest moment in SSB for me. Sonic, Pac Man, Ryu, Cloud, Banjo, King K. Rool, Hero, Simon and Sephiroth were all huge as well for me... but nothing beats Mega Man joining.

This is a history timeline of Smash. It really shows how far this series has gone, and how much it has grown. If there's another Smash game in the future, it has to contain everything from Ultimate and add more content on top.
Probably not a lot of third-party characters but definitely the content. Also Nintendo, as a business, won’t let a money maker, like smash, be slept on.
Maybe a Spinoff of the series

I love how the first trailer starts off like if it were a normal Mario commercial. But then you see Pikachu there. That doesn't seem right. And then hard cut to beating each other up.
Smash has gone from Nintendo’s novel crossover fighting game has transformed into something that celebrates some of the best and most monumental things in all of gaming.
Who knows what the next Smash Bros. will hold? It could be essentially Ultimate with some more content or they could take a complete left turn and take it to a new direction.
Either way, let’s appreciate this game and its roster while we still have it. We might never get to experience a crossover of this capacity ever again. Thank you Mr. Sakurai for truly pouring your heart and soul into every aspect of this incredible game and this entire series. It truly is something special.
I hope we go in a new direction. You're not gonna top this, and nor should you. The next Smash game should try a new approach. Maybe keep it an all-Nintendo affair, or have some original characters.
Personally, I think the only thing they could do is release ultimate again but with updated graphics and rosters etc. There isnt anything you can do to top whats been done now.
@@justfriendly7676 or reuse ultimates engine for a new game to keep all the characters they made and add new ones like tails, rayman, crash, and maybe waluigi, plus bring back trophies and make a story mode bigger than subspace, and I want it to have 3x the people that worked on ultimate
@@gavanscommandblock I think in order to keep all existing characters (keeping 3rd parties in mind) they would either have to jump through the same legal hoops Sakurai had to when making the game, or keep the same copyright. Im not sure how tied to the engine the copyright is, or if its the trademarked name of the game (pun not intended). Im not a video game buisness expert, but I believe they wouldn't be able to make a new game and still keep every 3rd party addition they've made. Maybe a SSB Ultimate Definitive Edition would be the way to go.

That was also probably where Smash peaked for me. By the time Pyra released, I was kinda done playing. I’d had 700 hours of fun with it, but I just got a bit bored of it, and none of the DLC after Sephiroth and Steve interests me. But Sakurai brought us all on one hell of a ride.

I was 13 years old when the "Happy Together" trailer dropped on TV! I remember how excited I was thinking "OMG I CAN PLAY AS MARIO AND LINK IN THE SAME GAME!"
How far we have come! It is truly incredible and brings so many emotions that we've reached the end! Thank you Sakurai, for the dedication you and your team have had to this franchise!
I was 14, but had no idea what was going on because, despite playing some games at my friends' houses as a kid, I'd never owned my own console until that point (I played old arcade/Atari games on my dad's Commodore 64, and later had a couple of PC games like TIE Fighter and Chex Quest, but didn't really know much beyond them). SSB64 was the first console game I ever owned, and since then I've been a fan of Nintendo.
When Sora was revealed, I cried tears of freaking joy. Nintendo has made the impossible possible by bringing him into the game.
Truly the end of an era.

Going from Mario tripping my Boi Yoshi, to Sonic the Hedgehog pushing Mario out of the way, to Ryu and 3 other Lads from popular Fighting Games seeking for a challenge, to Cloud breaking the Limit of Smash Bros, to Banjo-Kazooie Finally making it back on Nintendo, to Minecraft Steve finding the coordinates to Mario, to fricken Sephiroth defeating Galeem in one shot and bringing Smash Despair, to Sora, ending off Smash as we know it with a bang

I love Lucas’ trailer because he saves Ness like Ness did for Lucas in Brawl. Man’s not only sticking up for his homie, but he’s repaying a debt.
As a Lucas main since Brawl, I remember being SO disappointed when he wasn’t in SSB4’s roster at first, but then was SO happy when he came back later as DLC.
As sad it is that this series is over, I'm nonetheless grateful that I was here to experience it in all its glory. What a legacy to leave behind! Rest easy to the team and Mr. Sakurai!

@@pooky-changaming4089 I wouldn't be suprised if we never get another installment. Nothing is ever gonna top Ultimate. And Sakurai deserves a break after his 23 years of hard work. Granted, a reboot of the series would not be impossible, but don't expect it to live up to Ultimate.

How is it that this is the first time that Sora has met any Dragon Quest characters? In Kingdom Hearts, for Square Enix franchises, we had Final Fantasy, The World Ends with You and even Einhänder, but not Dragon Quest.

Well he didn’t make TWEWY he just designed the characters and was executive producer.
The devs of Einhander worked on the gummi ship levels for KH3, so they thought they’d put in a little Easter egg. It’s the same reason Sora’s design is heavily based on Sion and Pence’s shirt references the Bouncer, because Nomura designed characters for that game.
Dragon Quest devs don’t work on Kingdom Hearts so why would you expect characters from that series to be in KH? It’s like expecting Lara Croft to appear in Kingdom Hearts just because she’s a Square Enix character

The fact banjo Kazooie made it into the game warms my heart and makes me appreciate this addition even more. To think they some legendary and historic characters didn't even make it in as a Mii costume.
Even as mii costumes im so glad Sans and Cuphead made it in with new soundtracks. Like you really cant play super smash bros ultimate without additional fighters. Its what makes the game so great for me. The overall variety of characters from different companies in one game. Truly a gem

It's been a good run, boys. May not have have gotten to see dark souls repped but it's amazing how many of these characters can fit in one game. This entire franchise is a gift to gaming culture and I'm so grateful for everything it's done in our personal lives.
Man what a trip. I remember being 9 years old and seeing the N64 commercial on TV and being super hyped. Then seeing Ganondorf in Melee, finally unlocking Mewtwo, and fighting Giga Bowser and Crazy Hand for the first time were all epic. In Brawl seeing Link get a Twilight Princess aesthetic update, Diddy Kong's addition, Charizard, Wolf, custom stages, Sonic and Snake's addition, playing through the Subspace Emissary, winning against Tabuu on intense the first time...all epic memories. On WiiU and 3DS getting rid of the stupid trip mechanism, Cloud and Mega Man, that sick theme song, being the first handheld version, Ryu, heck even Duck Hunt, all fun. Then Ultimate making sure to add every existing character and stage so far, World of Light, the soundtrack y'all, Ridley and King K Rool were unexpected additions for me, I'd been saying that Banjo and Kazooie should be in a Smash game since melee so that was a fun surprise, honestly the MOST unexpected reveal for me that came completely out of left field was Sephiroth. When One Winged Angel started playing I got goosebumps. Sora is a great end to the DLC, but he was the most requested character and there were so many rumors and "leaks" that I wasn't just shocked to see him added. Happy? Yes. Surprised? Not as much as some of the other additions. This has been a helluva ride and I can't wait to see what the future holds as well.

It seems like forever ago that everyone was so hyped up for Megaman being added to the game! I loved seeing all of the excitement surrounding this game throughout the last few years idk if anything can top this in the future.
I think Hikari Simple and Clean orchestral being the final song for Smash Directs is perfect. Very climactic, strong finish, loads of emotion to say goodbye to our dearly beloved directs. Thank you Sakurai!

That's not true
As far back as Melee, Sakurai could have added Solid Snake to the roster at Hideo Kojima's personal request, but chose not to because Melee was too far in development for that to feasibly happen.

Even after all these years that Sonic trailer still gives me chills. Back then I lost my shit over it, it was the coolest thing to me back then.
Now that I think about it, when you were a kid unlocking characters in Melee, they were each like they're own little reveals in themselves, as you didn't who you were getting next or even when the next character might show up
If this were it, and the only new Smash Content were rereleases of Ultimate on the next consoles, I’d be fine with that. Thank you Sakurai for making the best 4 years of my life, hype and pay off. Some stumbles along the way, but an ending I can say was well worth it. Thank you for such a perfect game.

6:00 I still remember watching this trailer in school thinking "oh, that's it..." as I was about to press X, I then hear Snake's codec. I WAS IN SHOCK, LIKE WHAT. NINTENDO?!!!?!! Then to see Snake in Smash Bros Brawl was crazy at the time.
Edit: wow WOW, these reveals are dang amazing! As someone who never really got into Nintendo past the DS/Wii, I never saw how good these are. Sora was definitely the icing on the cake. You could tell that the reveal with the Splatoon character when seeing Mario and Link stationary was the original build up to it.
