  • Healthy soil starts with micro-organisms. In this video, professional Rosarian Paul Zimmerman shows how to create a healthy living soil profile.
The forest floor creates the richest soil in the world thanks to layer after layer of organic matter (fallen leaves). Fungus called Mycorrhizae develop alongside tree roots, forming a symbiotic relationship. This beneficial fungus reaches out into the soil and breaks down nearby food, then delivers the nutrients, like Nitrogen, to the tree roots. In exchange the Mycorrhizae get “paid” in sugar from the tree.
To get this kind of symbiosis happening in your garden:
    1. Turn the soil.
    2. Add in compost (throughout the WHOLE garden).
    3. Add a mycorrhizal drench.
    For existing beds:
    1. Dig holes every 2-3 feet with a bulb augur.
    2. Fill the holes with worm castings, and then cover the holes up.
    3. Again, add a mycorrhizal drench over the whole garden.
One last tip: don’t zap your soil’s Nitrogen! As micro-organisms in the soil work to break down organic material, they use up a lot of Nitrogen. So when you are adding mulch or shredded leaves to your soil, be sure to put down some finished compost first to provide plenty of Nitrogen and create a “buffer” for your plants’ roots.
