Just realized that one of the rules that was mentioned (for the 11 mile ritual) was that you arent supposed to turn on the heat. So they broke a rule a long time before they heard the voice and started to look for it.
You can have the heat on its because they were looking back and they didn't close their eyes and they stopped even if there was a roadblock
