In the fourth installment of Manga VS Movie, we're switching things up by checking out a manga that's based on a film. Not just any film either- we're taking a look at a manga based on one of the greatest horror films ever made: A Nightmare On Elm Street.
A film about a group of teenagers who are being targeted by the spirit of a serial killer named Freddy Krueger in their dreams. If they are killed in said dreams, they die in real life.
We'll additionally be checking out how this manga adaptation came to be in Monthly Halloween.

The goal of this series is figuring out which manga adaptations are worth watching, and which you should avoid. By seeing how they match up to their source material.
To better illustrate this, I've incorporated a rating system which I'll bring up at the end of each video.
The rating system is out of 10. which will mainly be in two categories based on how the adaptation matches up to the source material.
3 points for adapting the characters correctly, as getting the characters right is one of, if not the most important part of any adaptation. This goes for the main characters, side characters, and the antagonists if there are any.
3 points for how the story relates to the source material. The story does not have to be a perfect match by any means, as I do understand writers need to condense what is usually a long and drawn-out concept into only a few hours, however, I am looking for at least a few similar elements of the original plot within the film. I'm also looking to see if the story, in particular, is accessible to both fans of the manga, and casual viewers alike.
And finally 4 points for how it holds up as both a film (or manga in this case) and as an adaptation. As we could very well be looking at a very good film (or manga in this case), but just not a good adaptation from the original source material.
There will obviously be many factors that decide my final verdict on these points, but I feel this way we can accurately rank these films as we cover more throughout the series.

The manga version honestly feels less like an adaptation and more like an exercise for helping a new manga artist practice, the art itself ranges alot from pretty good to some shots where it looks like it was drawn in under 5 minutes, it honestly wouldn't super me if this was just someones assistant or apprentice being told to draw a manga based on a movie they liked and to let them practice and it was just added to the magazine as a bonus chapter, would also explain why the person used an alias because it was never intended to be official work
I can’t believe that there even IS an A Nightmare on Elm Street manga. It makes me pray that one day we could get an adaptation that is much longer than this one shot!

Great video, though! The idea of the magazine itself is more intetesting to me than the Nightmare manga specifically. I miss the days of collected fiction magazines.

18:20 Dumb Marge, this isn't Freddy's Revenge, that's the SECOND movie.
I think a thing the movie doesn’t get enough credit for is making you feel unmoored from reality in a dreamlike way. Scenes transition oddly and character reactions don’t feel realistic inside the dream. Like when Nancy sees the Freddy Hall Monitor and body bag and keeps walking.

Do comic book companies still do movie adaptations? My personal favorite was the DC comics adaptation of Alien Nation. This is fascinating. I wonder what other movies have a manga counterpart over there.
There have been comic adaptations of the recent Star Wars movies and The Mandalorian TV show.
Infact there are actually two different comic book adaptations of The Force Awakens and Last Jedi. By both Marvel and IDW.

Unfortunately none of the other manga adaptations I mentioned have fully scanned or translated versions available. Only pieces here and there. I found an old French article that had a few screenshots of ROTLD scans, but it certainly wasn't the full story.

Now I'm curious, the manga adaptation of Friday the 13th , and or an manga adaptation of M3GAN, if there's a such thing. M3GAN, probably doesn't have a comic adaptation of it, because it's too new of a movie, but I could be completely wrong.
