  • Today marks the 40th anniversary of the release of another lesser-known Disney animated classic, "The Fox and the Hound" (1981). So of course, since I grew up with the read-along book-and-audio adaptation of the film (in fact, that's how I was introduced to the movie before it came out on home video), I just had to do a Big Bad Wolf read-along review vlog about it! It's one of Disney's better read-along film adaptations of the early 1980s, using the actual music score and sound effects and even the voice clips of young Tod and Copper!

    Fun Fact: That same year The Fox and the Hound was released; Kurt Russell, the voice of Adult Copper, left Disney and went on do "big boy" movies. And his first was Escape from New York where he played the infamous one-eyed anti hero Snake Plissken. From then on, Russell would begin his frequent pairing up with John Carpenter in the 1980's, as the two would do movies together which would be cult favorites such as The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China.

    Speaking of Tim Burton, he returned to Disney directing his 2nd animated film "Frankenweenie" in 2012.

    Happy 40th anniversary to The Fox and the Hound. At 17:02, that is a good point about owls in the Disney universe having identical appearances, it never crossed my mind before. Plus, Tim Burton actually thought Disney lost its magic then? This movie proves that in the era prior to the Disney Renaissance, not all was lost.

    And speaking of "The Great Mouse Detective," that film turned 35 back in July 2nd!
    (And Glen Keane had also animated Pocahontas, Tarzan, and John Silver in Treasure Planet.) Edit: Glen Keane had debuted as a Disney Animator in The Rescuers, in which, as I just learned, he animated both Bernard and Miss Bianca, and Penny. He even animated Elliott, Pete's Dragon. As well as Eilonwy in The Black Cauldron and Marahute the golden eagle in The Rescuers Down Under. Speaking of Penny from The Rescuers, by the way, he also animated Jenny from Oliver and Company! And coincidentally, she's the replacement character for Penny, whose name rhymes with that one, in that film (in which Glen Keane also animated Georgette and Fagin. Along with Sykes, of course.).

    I remember that the self-contained room I was in at the elementary school I attended had the read-along of this film among the various books, but it didn't have the record with it. But anyway, glad to see that you did a review of this particular read-along. Are you planning on doing a review of the read-along for "Alice in Wonderland"? The film celebrates its 70th anniversary on the 26th of this year. Also, regarding Kurt Russell voicing the adult Copper, he was originally going to be voiced by Jackie Cooper, who was fired when he demanded too much money for the role. Also, "The Fox and the Hound" was actually the last animated Disney film to end with "The End: A Walt Disney Production".

    I remember and have heard most of those old 1981 songs. Plus, I especially know Buddy Baker as the composer of the music in the Winnie the Pooh featurettes. Edit: he also wrote the music for the Merlin Jones films by Walt Disney ("The Misadventures of Merlin Jones" and "The Monkey's Uncle"), both of which also had songs by The Sherman Brothers and starred Annette Funicello of The Mickey Mouse Club and Tommy Kirk, one of Walt's regular live-action film roles (his first role being Travis Coates in "Old Yeller". And he did the role of Merlin Jones as well.). And Buddy Baker also paired with The Sherman Brothers in "Summer Magic", starring Hayley Mills (who worked for six total films for Walt Disney, the first of which being Pollyanna). And, he also did the music for "The Gnome-Mobile", which starred the third and final Disney appearance of Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber together (and were paired with Ed Wynn, who was previously with them in Mary Poppins, and even credited in this film as the "Mary Poppins Kids").

    Atlantis and Treasure Planet did have songs, though. There's one in the end credits of "Atlantis" called "Where the Dream Takes You," performed by artist Mýa. And there's a couple songs sung by John Rzeznik of the Goo-Goo Dolls in "Treasure Planet." They are "I'm Still Here" and "Always Know Where You Are."
    Also, in "The Rescuers Down Under," we hear Wilbur the Albatross singing along to the song "Black Slacks" during when we first meet him in the film. And McLeach does a few numbers of his own in a couple parts, such his own version of "Home on the Range."

  • @arenjtumastens
    @arenjtumastens Před 3 lety +3

    Amos Slade was the last role that Jack Albertson voiced. And Jeanette Nolan, voice of Widow Tweed, previously voiced Ellie Mae in "The Rescuers."

  • @arenjtumastens
    @arenjtumastens Před 3 lety +4

    Back when I first saw Big Mama in this film, I always noticed that she looked very similar to Owl from Winnie the Pooh. And that Boomer, Chief, and the porcupine had the same voice roles as Piglet and Tigger, and Napoleon the hound in "The Aristocats" and the Sheriff of Nottingham in "Robin Hood," and also Luke in "The Rescuers."
    Plus, that's two hounds that Pat Buttram voices! Napoleon and Chief. Except Chief is a greyhound.

    5:59 If you listen to the background audio at Boomer and Dinky's part in this read along, you can hear their actual voices from the film. Including Paul Winchell as Boomer.

    Happy 40th Anniversary of this animated classic, and no surprise that this was the last animated feature to have a The End/Walt Disney productions title at the end of every animated feature with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and with a bunch of new animators working on this film including Glen Keane who was the supervising animator of the Bear.
    plus as I remember clearly, I remember seeing a copy of this at my local thrift store which had no record or cassette tape, and strange they cut out parts with Big Mama the Owl and the Porcupine in this adaptation of the read-along story! (and of course, Glen Keane also animated Marahute in the Rescuers Down Under and Jeanette Nolan voiced Ellie Mae in the Rescuers!) and also, Raiders of the Lost Ark was released in theatres and MTV was launched in the same year 40 years ago!

    Page 1: If they didn’t skip the part where Tod’s mother gets shot and killed (which wasn’t included in the read along to avoid making kids cry a lot):
    ‘Calm down, kiddo. It’s just a movie’ - Slappy Squirrel, Animaniacs
    Page 3: ‘Mmmmmm! Worms Good’ - Yoshi, Super Mario World (DiC) (I’d rather have bagels or waffles over worms)
    Tigger: Hey, Buddy Bear! That woodpecker sounds just like me. And he even mimics my laugh very good.
    Page 5: Bear (in the Big Blue House): I bet Tod smells this good all the time
    Page 8: I wouldn’t be too surprised if Chief’s dream has some pesky plumbers in it
    Page 9: ‘Smoking Isn’t Cool’ - Sonic the Hedgehog (DiC) (Disney+ doesn’t say that the film contains tobacco depictions but it does)
    Page 15: Oh no! Bridges don’t have sidewalks. If a train were to come. Oh Chief has two choices now. One: get hit by the train. Two: jump off the bridge. Well you got the picture. The trouble with being around railway tracks is getting yourself in a place where you can’t get away from the train.
    ‘TRAIN!!!!!!!!!’ (Stand By Me (1986))
    ‘Uh-Oh!’ - Sly Fox
    Operation Lifesaver wouldn’t approve of Chief chasing Tod on the train bridge
    Page 18: Cue the song Love from Robin Hood (1973) (this is due to Tod and Vixey’s character designs being recycled from Robin Hood and Maid Marian respectively)
    Page 20: Glen Keane’s style for villains is actually good.
    Both the read along and the storyteller album omitted The Porcupine who was voiced by John ‘Piglet’ Fielder
    Did you get the joke of when I suggested a possible name for the possible Fox and the Hound Poop: Disney Predates the Magic of Friendship Nearly 30 Years Before Hasbro? It’s linked to a little joke I suggested to be played before the Walt Disney Classics Poop logo. But it’s OK if you decided not to use that joke or the name I suggested.

      @Sunshinesomerset Před 3 lety +2

      @@ZakWolf After all, it was your idea to reference Sly Fox and Birdie in the possible Fox and the Hound poop. (I’m actually looking forward to the Sly Fox and Birdie reference) I never actually thought of a Sly Fox and Birdie reference for the poop. You really come up with better ideas than me. Remember I also did a script about Sly Fox putting lots of pennies on the train tracks to increase his chances of winning the lottery since his grandfather said it was good luck to put a penny on the train tracks. But I have to agree with Birdie with the only luck it will bring with putting pennies on the train tracks is bad luck.

      I even did a meme based on the ending scene of Bumbie’s Mom, except it involved the death of Tod’s mother at the start of the film. I was inspired by the end of Skippy Sees Bambi’s Mom Gets Murdered. I didn’t go with The Lion King because you already did that in the video.

    Speaking of Bambi, we get a few recycled animation scenes from that film in this one. Such as when Tod is first left stuck behind in the game preserve in the rain, and several animals are heading for their homes. There's even one part during then when we see a squirrel that looks like Wart from "The Sword in the Stone." And then there's a scene with Copper imitating a part from the hunting dogs scene in Bambi.
