I've been a New England fan since the 60's, and for my money, the 72 dolphins drove me nuts. Everyone in the stadium knew that Czonka was going to run the ball, and it didn't matter because he was going to get his 5 - 6 yards, carrying 8 defenders. Best team I've ever seen play the game.

    The 1991 Redskins Silencer
    Stats:
    14-2-0 (.875)
Best Offense (485 Points, 30.3 ppg)
    2nd best Defense (224, 14 pa/pg)
    Accomplishments:
    Best Offense in the league
    11-0 start
The average score of a Redskins game in '91 was 30-14.
    3 shutouts in five games.
Losses totalled losing by 5 points.
    5 1,000 yard players.
    Great coach.
    Strong team as a whole.
    They were balanced
14-2 record despite a hard regular season schedule.
    Only 7 sacks allowed
Shut down all teams in playoffs by at least a two score game.
    +18 turnover ratio.
    De-complishments
    Easy playoff schedule
    Dwindling sack count.
Not really mentioned as much as it should be in the conversation of great football teams.
Not many starts outside of one or two HoFs and Earnest Byner.
A really good team but not a great team.
5 very tight wins (One score games)
    Bunch of no-names.

I have to agree with you ! They were solid! That was quite the in depth Analysis. What really sets that team apart from other teams with a lot of wins or a super bowl team is the fact that they played against a lot of good teams that season. The strength of schedule should also be included in the factors. If you look at the 49ers in the 80's and even the 90j's, their strength of schedule was dismal. If you look at the 84 San Fransico 49ers (15-1) strength of schedule, it changes the dynamics. They played only 3 teams who had a winning record.

The 91 redskins were not even the best team that year. They had a very easy playoffs. (Falcons and Lions) They didn’t have to take on the 49ers. The giants had a quarterback debate which held them back. And the cowboys didn’t have Charles Haley yet. Randal Cunningham was out for the Eagles. Giving the man easy NFC East. They had a no name running back who wasn’t good. They had an unknown receiving core. An (to be kind) a average quarter back in Mark Rypien who could only throw verticals. The defenses only notable player was Charles Mann. The rest were no names. Joe Gibbs brought geriatrics to the table. And that’s about it. They had a good offensive line and a really good defender. That’s it. And played in an easy NFC

  • @KMC5240

91 Redskins should be on here somewhere They won a championship, finished 1st in scoring offense, and 2nd in scoring defense. They went 14-2, and their two loses were by a combined five points. One of the loses was the last game of the season where the starters didn't even play the whole game. So they could've easily been 16-0. Also, they started the season with three shutouts in five games. And including the post-season, they had 14 games in which they held their opponent to 17 points or less.

As a hawks fan, I am biased. I would argue for the 2013 Seattle Seahawks. It was the first team in a stretch of 2-3 years that led the league in total defense, fewest points allowed, the biggest season for the LOB (with arguably 2 HoFers in it, possibly a third). Wilson, likely a future HoFer, in only his sophomore season. Beastmode in his prime. Max Unger. The linebacking corps of B Wagz and KJ Wright. And their absolute blowout of the best offense in NFL history in the 2013 Manning-led Denver Broncos, 43-8 in the Super Bowl in an outdoor game. Let's not forget about their NFC Championship game against the reigning NFC Champion, and 12-4 WC (yes, wildcard at 12-4), San Francisco 49ers. Held to just 17 points.

I think that those Seahawks team were a fantastic team but the problem was that they had really close games to inferior opponents. They needed a 21 point comeback to beat a 0-8 Tampa at home, needed a goal line stand to beat the Rams, barely beat the Titans and Texans. Yes the Seahawks had a playoff built team with a historically great defense and a fanstastic run game but they didn't dominated the regular season like the teams on this list even if the 13-3 record is a great record.

2007 Patriots are 1 of the 10 best teams ever..probably the best. But they cant be on this list..thats ridiculous. Had they won the SB, Id have them #1, but they didnt. And they struggled in the playoffs. Giants weren't better, but were on that day. That's all that matters in football..no 7 game series. Do you have the 73-9 Warriors as 3rd best NBA team. They came every bit as close to winning the title, as NE did. But it's gotta be about what you did on the field.
My 2013 Broncos,& Peyton-basically shattered those Patriot/Brady offensive/qb records. But they got thrashed in the SB, so ya gotta count off for that. Speaking of Broncos, '98 Broncos are just about right at #7. They usually get over looked,& ranked around 15th. That's too low, but I think you hit it on the head. BTW-if the '98 Broncos played '07 Pats..I think NE wins. But that doesn't mean they should be on this list..let alone at #3. It can't be eye test, or based on the regular season, or potential. Has to be resume-then talent. And sorry, but winning the SB should be a requirement. I agree with '89 49ers being #1. That team was ridiculous..the best offense,& defense. I thought they'd 3 peat for sure. My Broncos went to 3 SBs in 4yrs. That '89 team was by far the best of those 3 teams..but took the biggest beatdown by a ways. That's cuz as good as '87 Washington was,& as great as '86 NYG were..those 49ers were much better,& the best ever. If not for Eli,& David Tyree, I'd have those Patriots #1,& SF #2. But ya know what they say about ifs,& buts...

I don't know who else I would put there; the 1978 Steelers certainly are a candidate. Despite not being a dominating team, you do have to consider the 1972 Dolphins; they DID go undefeated, even if it may have been by a thread. It's really hard to quantify greatness, especially when you're going across eras of football...but if I'm looking at who I'd put my money on, the '92 Cowboys and '86 Bears were GROSSLY underrated when it comes to this list. All they seem to mention about the '92 Cowboys are the triplets. How about having possibly the greatest offensive line ever assembled, a perennial pro bowler at tight end and the fastest defensive in pro football (which by the way was the 5th ranked that season).

    • @lunaticfringe896
      @lunaticfringe896 Před 3 lety +1

Yup, the '92 Cowboys were badass. That o-line is easily one of the best EVER, if not the best. The '76 Raider o-line is often considered one of the best o-lines ever and I'd put the '92 Cowboys o-line against them any day...

    • @RobertBalto
      @RobertBalto Před 2 lety

@Fries Yeah the Hogs are definitely up there too, as are the Raiders of the 70's as an another commenter said, especially the left side of their line with Shell and Upshaw. Don't know much about the Rams line, other than I'm pretty sure Jackie Slater would be on that line and he's a Hall of Fame left tackle. Also, I believe those would be Chuck Knox coached teams so that would make sense since he loved to run the ball...

    • @RobertBalto
      @RobertBalto Před 2 lety

@Fries I do know of Ray Didinger, he's actually my favourite panelist on those countdown shows because he knows a lot about the older players and can recall things that happened starting from the early 50's, and I always like hearing about older players and teams.
Really the Hogs, the Raiders line and the Rams' lines are all before my time (I was born in '84). But I do really like hearing about the history of the game so I was very aware of Upshaw, Shell and Otto, as well as Russ Grimm, Joe Jacoby, Mark May and the Hogs. But I was not really aware of those Rams linemen, other than Jackie Slater, so I appreciate the history lesson. Actually, come to think of it, that explains why Eric Dickerson put up some of those insane numbers at the beginning of his career. Other than obviously being a Hall of Fame running back, that line was obviously opening some holes for him. And with his size and speed, it was game over if you gave him that kind of O-line.
I've always found that other than quarterback, the skill positions are a little overrated. I think the second most important positions to fill in the offense are the linemen. That's why you pretty much never see runningbacks or receivers picked first in the draft, but if the first pick is not a quarterback, it's usually a left tackle or defensive lineman. Because the game really is won upfront.

I hate the argument of they didn't win the superbowl so they must be discounted... the superbowl may be the big prize but it's like you don't value how dominant the teams were in the regular season and the post season prior to the super bowl. This is why I like European sport league structures. They have the season and the knockout tournaments separate so that even if the number 1 team in the season didn't win the knockout tournament, they still won the league which is considered a bigger achievement.
I love the NFL but the playoff system annoys me because a team can play a 14-2 season and get the best record in the league and then lose in their first game in the playoffs because they just weren't quite with it on that particular day. I like that the playoffs exist but I wish the teams could get more appreciation from the fans even if they didn't win the superbowl.
07 Patriots vs. 07 Giants. The Patriots play absolutely amazing in the regular season, setting records and putting on clinic after clinic. They are undefeated at the superbowl against a wildcard team in the Giants. The giants played better in that 1 game. That does not make them the defacto better team.
1983 with Washington vs. Raiders. Washington were the heavy favourites with a 14-2 season with 541 points scored (a then record). They got blown out of the super bowl 38-9. They were the better team during the year and they lost that day

Give me a break and I'm a fan of the '84 team. How many HOF players did they have on their roster? We're talking best of ALL TIME HERE...

The 84 49ers? LMAO They played against 3 teams who had a winning record that season. The opposition total record 76 wins and 114 losses. The 49ers had the easiest schedule for like 2 decades.

The 1976 Raiders are a great team - in my top 20. The Patriots blew them out by 31 points in the regular season and were up 21-10 at the beginning of the 4th Quarter in the playoff game. The 1994 49ers got blown out by more than 30 points during the regular season as well - by the Philadelphia eagles. I couldn't put either one in the top 10 - not with a mammoth blowout.
If the focus was just on the team that showed up for Superbowl Sunday. The 76 and 83 Raiders have strong arguments for the top 10.

@@arachnido9827 the best Eagles team ever was the 1949 team led by HOFer's RB Steve Van Buren and C/LB Chuck Bednarik. They won the 49 NFL Championship by shutting out the Rams in LA 14-0 in a downpour. They also won the 48 Championship in a 7-0 shutout of the Cardinals during a blizzard in Philadelphia

I think the '89 49ers are the only the team in NFL history that could've succeeded in any era. They had enough grit to grind with the 70's Steelers, but also be able to spread you out on offense and pass against today's Patriots.
The'85 Bears and their 46 defense would struggle against today's spread offenses. The '78 Steelers wouldn't be able to play in today's game due to the new defensive rules.
The '89 49ers was the most balanced team ever

Please...you must of been hit upside your head if you think the Patriots could beat the 85 Bears. The Bears would destroy those lil babies. Even if by some miracle the Pat's put points up, there is no way in hell they could stop Walter Payton.

I know that up until the Cubs won last year, all any Chicago residents who don't like basketball had in this world is the 85 Bears, but I think the poster is right. I hate the freaking Patriots and everything they stand for but if you put Patriots-esque points up against the 85 Bears, you are winning. They gave up 20+ points 3 times in 85, two for wins in Weeks 1 and 3 and the Loss to Miami in Week 13. Walter Payton ran for 301 Yards in those games total, which didn't help at all.
More importantly, 1985 Walter Payton had 9 Rushing and 2 Catching TDs, to go with his 1551 yards. That is not enough to beat the Patriots of today, especially with their help from the league/refs. ;)

The Steelers put 9 guys from their 4 Super Bowl teams in Canton and did so going from a running league to a passing league, google all the rule changes made during that decade and yet they still went 4-0 in the Super Bowl playing against much tougher teams and more of them, SB 13 had something like 20 people, players, coaches, owners, etc who ended up in the HOF, LMFAO

  • @ElvisRose_

The ranking on this list is fair, some of the other NFL lists seem a tad more arbitrary but for what these teams did, how they did it, when they did it etc. this is fair.

at least the 2004 Patriots won the Super Bowl lmfao....that already makes them better than 2007 imho, cause the records they made in 2007 can and will be or has been surpassed much easier, having a chip to prove it is much more difficult to surpass.
