This list isn’t in any particular order, with the exception of the last two. Those are the plugins that I use on every single session.
Some of these plugins are standalone, and some are accessed through their Virtual Mix Rack.
    Gate: Drums
We’ll start off with an easy one. The Gate: Drums. This is the best gate for cleaning up drums that I have ever used. To borrow an overused phrase, “It Just Works”. I can drop it as the first plugin on a track, and I’ll almost always only need to adjust the Detect Threshold, and that’s all I need to do. If I’m gating a Kick Drum, I’ll add in the Detection Filters and it works great as well if you need to.
    Virtual Channel
It has 6 different console emulations, an SSL E Series, an SSL G Series, an API, a Neve 8048, a Trident, and vintage RCA tube console.
I usually like to mix and match. I’ll use the Neve for snare drum. API or SSL for the rest. Anything that needs added warmth, the RCA emulation is perfect for that. It’s really a great plugin to experiment with.
    AirEQ Air
This plugin is derived from the Eiosis Air EQ Premium, which was designed by Fabrice Gabriel, on of the co-founders of Slate Digital. He really should get the bulk of the credit for the plugins I’m mentioning here.
    FG-2A
Next up is the FG-2A. The FG-2A is an emulation of the old Teletronix LA-2A. It’s an tube-based opto compressor with a unique release time that’s dependent upon the audio that’s going through it. It sounds wonderfully rich across a vocal track. It has a really smooth sound to it, that I really love depending upon the song. Just try it and you’ll fall in love with it, too.
    Lustrous Plates
Next I have the Lustrous Plates. This is a 3rd party plugin that’s made by LiquidSonics. I’m a big fan of plate reverbs, particularly across a vocal track. It gives the vocals a smoothness to them without sounding like they’re in a particular space. It has seven different plates with different sonic characteristics.
    Virtual Buss Compressors
Now onto the Virtual Buss Compressors. This was one of the first Slate Digital Plugins that I bought. It has an emulation of three very popular compressors that mixing and mastering engineers have used for decades.
The first, and my personal favorite, is the FG-Grey plugin. This is a modified emulation of the legendary SSL Bus Compressor. It sounds great on any music that needs to be more in-your-face, like Rock, Hip Hop, & EDM. It has a nice added High Pass Filter, which SSL didn’t add until years later, so that your low kick can be set to minimally trigger the compressor. This helps prevent that pumping sound that you hear if you have a lot of low-end kick drum in your song.
It also has an emulation of the Focusrite Red3 compressor, a favorite of famed mix engineer, Chris Lord-Alge.
The last emulation is the FG-MU, which is a combination of the legendary Fairchild 670 and the Manley Variable-MU. I like this compressor when I’m working with solo recordings, classical music, or traditional jazz. There’s also a plugin version that has all three in series, in case you want to use all three or easily A/B the different models.
    Verbsuite Classics
These include the EMT-250, Lexican 480L, AMS RMX-16, Eventide SP2016, the Quantec Room Simulator, the Sony DRE 2000, the even the TC Electric TC6000.
Do yourself a favor and download the FG-BM7 add-on. I’ll post a link below. That will add the IRs from the modern Bricasti M7 reverb unit. There are some beautiful algorithms within that more modern set of IRs.
    FG-116
Next up is the FG-116. These are three variations of emulations of the legendary UREI 1176 compressor. This compressor may be the most popular one in history. It sounds amazing on bass or guitars or whatever else.
The only real downside to these emulations is that they don’t emulate the “British Mode”
    Virtual Tape Machines
I use this plugin all the time. I’ll always have it across the stereo bus. Maybe on a drum bus or vocal track that I want to subtly warm up. It’s great. Use this on anything or everything.
    FG-Stress
Alright, on to my second top 2 plugin of theirs. The FG-Stress. The Empirical Labs Distressor is my favorite analog compressor. It’s extremely versatile. It can be smooth and transparent or it can be used to absolutely crush sounds, or anything in between. I missed the Distressor in the digital domain so much.
I even bought the Empirical Labs Arouser plugin when it came out. It’s pretty good, but I love the straight forward quality of a good Distressor emulation and the Slate FG-Stress really nails it.
I also love the Distortion 2 and 3 settings of the Distressor. These add rich harmonics to the audio, depending on how hard you drive the Distressor or FG-Stress.
Thanks for watching and make sure to smash that like and subscribe button.

I love Slate Digital stuff and I was lucky enough to buy a few things when they were still doing perpetual licenses, but I’m all done with the “rent to never own” bullshit that all these companies are doing. Started using a lot of Analog Obsession and Plugin Alliance stuff. I can buy it, no Ilok crap, and I own it.
