Andy is really struggling with his sleep schedule at the moment - back to school can't come soon enough. Autism, anxiety, depression seem to be combining to make it very difficult for him to stay asleep, and Melatonin isn't working as well as we'd hoped.

I have autism and at night time I just get this really weird feeling like a scared feeling so I barely get any sleep and also even in the day time I just feel scared for no reason
Great teamwork getting back to sleep. Hopefully when he settles back into school, he will start sleeping better again.
Thanks so much for this in desperate times we seek reassurance on our path through life ,to the point our family is at breaking point this just may have saved us again thanks.ps I could devolve more but just lets just embrace the fact we are not alone thank you thank you thank you God bless
Loving these videos mate x
Poor angel. I'm sure his sleep schedule will straighten out soon. Happy 2018!
I'm glad andy took some melitonin, hope all goes well. happy new year :) great vlog once again too
poor andy cant even begin to imagine what he is going through it could be the stress or dare I say it the excitement, of going back to school and getting into a normal routine again hopefully he settles back into some kind of pattern soon have a great 2018 guys and good wishes to you all
Love the channel kev
Hope he's not getting sick. My boy also slept like 11 hours last night...but he's been sick during break.
Iâm autistic and I have trouble sleeping sometimes I wake up sometimes between 4 or 5 am
Spiffy Virus I
Spiffy Virus Same here, it's 11pm right now and I still can't sleep.
Iâm not autistic and I still wake up really early
My 8 year old autistic son always end up in my bed. He has a bedside light and someone suggested a radio on in his room on low volume might keep him in his bed.
Idk if this is any help; but I have autism, and I find it hard to sleep b/c if I donât get to sleep at a certain time I freak out and that anxiety keeps me awake. Maybe he feels the same? Idk tbh
emochromo that's the same with me and if any one in my of my family members fall asleep before me
Same I get really bad anxiety for no reason and I have autism too
@@betsyandbosleythewesties6716 same
Happy New year guys. Do you have a vlog where you talk about your son's early age. Signs, diagnosis, speech, potty training etc. If so can you direct me to the link. If you don t have a vlog like that hopefully you can make one someday. I know from experience that those are very helpful for parents who just start their autism "journey".
I think the only times we ever talked about that stuff are on the live streams when people have asked about them
Bruh I canât sleep till like 4 or 5 so I only get like 1 or 2 hours of sleep then I need to wake up for skl đ
Oh, Andy, buddy. I can really relate to you so much in this video. I hope you will feel better when you go back to school and school has gone back to normal.
Andy is so cute when he's good and by the bells and churches
I am autistic and I don't sleep well ether
Watching this video at 5am in the morning! I haven't been to sleep yet...
His sleep pattern is all over the place. Poor thing.
I found that if you give the melatonin every single night no matter what, it will settle.
One minute you give it to him then you don't, then he won't take it....
It's very confusing for him.
If you put his medicine time on his bored and make sure he takes it every single day it will soon right itself.
Sadly with mess like our kids are on you can't stop and start it, they must have it every day at the regular time.
Good luck and a very happy new year to you all xx
he might be poorly bless him, I have had a bug where I just felt wiped out recently and my son and daughter both had it too.
I've never seen liquid melatonin before I've seen pill form and gummies
You could try using Night Shift mode on his iPad which changes the hue of the screen and improves melatonin production! :)
i have spd and i have trouble sleeping and i wake usually at 1-3 am
I'm pleased to hear he is starting to accept the melitonin. Last time I watched a vlog about his sleep he was refusing to take it at all. Feels like a step forward :-)
My partner is the same with sleep
YOU ARE NOT ALONE
When Iâm hungry in the night or in general I eat a banana or two as they are really filling
Kev have you ever been tested for sleep apnea? I have it and the machine makes a big difference
I havenât been test. I assume I have it.
Do you use any kind of screen dimming app on his iPad? I don't know what it's called on Apple products but on android there's an app called Twilight and on desktop there's f.lux. They warm and dim the screen so you don't get as much blue light, which seriously affects the production of sleep hormones. Sleep hygiene and all that.
We donât use anything like that, but he doesnât use his iPad for an hour before sleep.
I know this is an old video and it isn't meant to be critical it's an honest question. I've been catching up on some old videos and I noticed he drinks mostly soda during the day. Have you tried decreasing it? I have seller issues and Autism and we tried cutting out the caffeine but there was no change. I didn't know if that was common in Autism to not be affected by caffeine.
Can I just say that I also have asd and sleep issues, if I sleep too much I'm exhausted more than if I don't sleep. Also, if the melatonin doesn't work for him, it doesn't work for me
When does he take his fluoxetine? I was told not to take it in the evenings because it can affect your sleep. It was recommended to take in the mornings. (Although I didnât switch to mornings as I have other medication I take in the evening so it is easier for me to remember. And I am having some sleep problems like constantly waking up during the night like Andy. Whether thatâs actually to do with when the fluoxetine is taken is another matter, however)
He usually takes it in the morning
Hey mate I know you probably wonât read this but a fan always helped my cousin. She has autism and if we give her some melatonin and a fan she usually is calm and she will sleep. Itâs just a thought
He hates the noise in his room unfortunately
I have autism too , I also have anxiety, I am 14 years old and I love to watch Thomas and friends and MLP đđ»đđ»đđ»
Dylan The Vintage & Antique Collector! I'm autistic so leave me alone
Kelsey thatâs not very nice whatâs it got to do with you anyway đĄ
Sensational Angel same here but Iâm 17 I donât watch those shows often but I sometimes read fanfiction or watch my old dvds
Lucky him I didn't get to sleep to 7:30 am and probably woke up at 10:00 am
I hope you know Iâve been around long enough Iâm not being rude, but is it possible that itâs a nutritional thing causing/adding to the exhaustion? Maybe anemia, B-12, vitamin D, something like that? Possibly time for blood work/nutritionist help again? My gastroparesis malnourishes me and messes up my sleep schedule with my level of exhaustion. Wishing you all the best. You keep me well entertained and in good spirits while recovering from surgery. {:
Heâs still under the care of a dietitian, but everyone has pretty much accepted that thereâs nothing we can do without him agreeing to it.
lollujo Vlogs You say that, but I mean, youâre the parents? (Iâm not being an ass, Iâm really trying to understand.) Is it that it would get to the point of holding him down and it would be cruel? If his nutrition was causing him dangerous issues would you get him a weighted and bridaled feeding tube so he couldnât pull on it or something? Again, I really never mean to sound rude, and I hope the sleep is looking up!
Weâre not going to force feed him. Itâd be like torturing him. Weâve told his doctor that if it ever got to that point theyâd have to sedate him first
lollujo Vlogs Yeah, thatâs what Iâm asking I guess. Youâd sedate him if it got to it?
I just watched this video bcuz Andy has the same pjs as me
He on the same medication as i am
I have a feeling the amount of fizzy drinks he has is having a huge affect on his mood and sleep etc! Itâs additive stuff! I know he wonât drink anything else but I would seriously try to get him off of that! I went fizzy drink free having struggled with feeling awful if I didnât get the fizzy drinks! Iâve never felt better now!
He has caffeine free ones mainly.
sugar free too ? I would stay clear of caffeine all together tbh. Some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others, personally as little as 20mg of caffeine can keep me awake for hours after I've had it if I have no tolerance. Also consider that the blue light from screens (and light in general) can make you brain think its day time and mess up your sleep cycles by reducing the amount of natural melatonin you body produces.
oh also insomnia is one of the most common side effect on fluoxetine !
lollujo Vlogs the Dr Pepper zero tastes exactly the same :)
Yeah, sugar free too
I have autism I find it hard to sleep
It may be worth asking the doctor about the antidepressant called Mirtazapine. I have been taking it for a number of years and it was the only medication that actually helped me because it helped me sleep. I also had terrible trouble sleeping due to anxiety and my brain just not stopping on a night to let me sleep. I take it on a night, it stabilises my mood. Has a seditive effect so allows me to sleep which in turn allows me to feel better during the day. It also just sort of slows my thoughts down so I can think more clearly
Weâre still hopeful getting back into a school routine will help him with his sleep
Yes if things stabilise once Andy is back in his routine then that would be much better than risking changing his medication especially since fluoxitine has helped him so much getting him back into school and everything. Maybe just something to keep in mind for the future if you ever get to the point of feeling the fluoxitine is no longer as effective
My son also takes mirtazepine along with Trazodone to get him to sleep through the night.
Andrew?! Damn I didnât think Andy was short for something I thought that was his full name
My brother has autism and ocd heâs 9
i don''t like medicine and i usally have choclate after or pop
his caffeine intake must be crazy
The only caffeine he has is from the one can of Dr Pepper he has a day, and thatâs fairly minimal
Iâm autistic and I always wake up at 2 or 3 am
What time do you go to sleep? And do you get tired during the day?
dr pepper has caffeine, try sprit instead
He only likes Dr Pepper and Coke. He gets one can of Dr Pepper a day to get him to take his medicine, and the rest of the time heâs on caffeine free coke
Try to ask your doctor for more information, but it seems that Andy has to get into a constant sleep schedule so that he gets used to it.
My son currently takes 100mg and 150mg Trazadone, 2 (25 mg) Vistaril, 60 mg Latuda and 5 mg melatonin.

try a red light as well... I dont know the exact science to it, but Red light is supposed to make you feel tired, and makes your eyes tired... maybe put a red light in his room?
Gemma Gotchi or blue is supposed to have a calming affect too
Emily Uberto nonono blue light stops your brain producing sleep hormones, that's why computers and phones have such an impact on sleep. Blue light is fine during the day but at night it'll just wake your brain up
Yes I have autism and I use red light, it works amazing.
Not blue light..blue as a color..walls painted blue or a blue focus point such as a toy or something.
However most tablet offer blue screen which is supposed to be better for the eyes..but the light produced by tablet and phones screens isn't a blue light generally...search online for most calming colors for the bedroom and blue is always listed as a top color!
Question if he doesnât like the taste of melatonin have you guys ever tried chewable ones? I donât know if the UK has them but maybe if he likes gummyâs he would like that or in a drink?
gosiathegreat123 the dissolvable ones are great! I use the brand Zarbee's baby for both of my children (6+4).
He wouldnât take anything like that
lollujo Vlogs Okay
2nd
Has he caught on to the fact the melatonin is coming so he's creeping off early?
Heâs just really tired I think
After watching the last part of the vlog you give him lots of chances and options don't you. Is there a reason for that...
With my son who is very much like Andy, I give him 2 choices....
if that was me that would of been no Ipad for a start. iPad time is earnt but displaying good and acceptable behaviour.
You say he doesn't understand but from an outsider watching in, he does understand when he can and can't have his iPad.
Anna then said Ipad you can have Ipad while you have meds..... that's ok if hes actually going to keep his end of the deal. If he says no to meds, then take the Ipad. He will very quickly learn that if he doesn't do what you ask then his Ipad is taken.
You can clearly see he is bargaining with you all the time and he knows how to get what he wants.
I know you guys have been under a lot of stress with his sleep pattern but stay strong and being a little firmer won't hurt at all.
You have to be a little tough sometimes but that doesn't make you any the less brilliant parents than you are. Xxxx
