The two wanted to make a career with Charlie's abilities and were about to become successful, only for the flea to end up getting killed by a bartender where Finnegan wanted to buy champagne to celebrate their success...

    I think the idea of this cartoon is Casper and Ferdie are friends because they are similar in the sense that Casper is not the typical ghost and Ferdie isn't a typical fox. Casper obviously is friendly whereas ghosts are scary, and Ferdie is really more of a puppy than an actual wild fox. Foxes don't lick faces, play fetch or rub up against someone's cheek to show their affection. Ferdie may be a fox by nature but he really has more of a puppy's traits. A fox cub would normally run away from anyone it came into contact with but Ferdie isn't a typical fox which is why I think he befriended Casper, who is an unusual ghost.

      Except a high calibire rifle like the one he had would’ve blown foxy plop to the land of the lost! Don’t believe me? People made very high caliber guns in the 40s to inflict maximum damage if a third war were to break out early. Guns like hunting rifles were used in combat then, so they had them on the list. I’m evil

    At 35 years old, this got me with tears in my eyes! First i was crying due to sadness over Ferdie being killed, then I thought ("Wait! if hes' dead, he'll come back as a ghost!") and then i started crying from joy.
    My only issue is that we never see Ferdie in any other episodes that I know of! VERY frustrating!

    • @spencerhensley5495

      They probably didn’t want kids to be reminded of him being killed so they didn’t bring him back. In the next short A Haunting We Will Go, Casper’s friend is shot but doesn’t die which tells me they realized they went too far by killing Ferdie off.

The Earth is constantly creating new "souls". Used ones are returned and cycled again. Old souls, upon leaving all attachments become like avatars or buddhas. These are not required to return, but achieve a unity with the cosmic light. Thank you for your time.

    That ending got me at first until Ferdie came back as a ghost like Casper. It makes sense, though, since this is a Casper cartoon and in Casper, death isn't the end and anyone or in this case, animal that dies, will and can just return as a ghost.

    • @spencerhensley5495
      @spencerhensley5495 Před 9 měsíci +2

      I feel the ending was a commentary to children by the writers to not befriend wild animals. In his infancy Ferdie wouldn’t be afraid of Casper. He only saw Casper as a nice ghost who genuinely wanted a friend. But by befriending him although Casper would treat him with love it opened the door for someone who wouldn’t and in this case it was the hunter. Had Ferdie been afraid of Casper as foxes normally are of people he probably would have stayed hidden in his den and survived just fine in the wild. But being a curious fox cub whose parents were probably out hunting or may have been shot themselves he befriended him which led to danger. I think this is why it was done because children naturally would want to befriend a cute looking small fox and while a friendship could develop that way it would end with a fox being killed by someone who wants to hunt or just hates wild animals in general. Also had Ferdie not been shot and actually had grown up he probably would have been afraid of Casper as foxes are less afraid as cubs but when they get older they are terrified of anything resembling a human presence. So Ferdie could have grown up then would have been afraid of Casper he would probably go out in the wild and hunt which Casper probably wouldn’t have understood and they probably wouldn’t have been friends but by being killed as a baby and his ghost returning he could always be friends with Casper because as a baby fox ghost he wouldn’t have lost his innocence.

    I think this cartoon explores the concept of whether or not animals have souls. If you love a pet enough, whether it be cat, dog, etc., they will love you back unconditionally. It can be argued that, when Ferdie comes back as a ghost, the fox had a soul, which was imbued by the very love Casper showed her. That's the point I think they were trying to make with this cartoon.

    From 4:29 to 4:34, Ferdie whines like a dog, very cute.

    "Til death do they part"? Judging by the looks of it... apparently not.

    True The ending is sad, but it taught a good moral. And this was back when parents weren't whining about children being traumatized over a cartoon character dying.

    The biggest problem I have with this cartoon is it's really hard to be sad at Ferdie's death when we never got a chance to see he and Casper bond really to begin with. All we see is he befriends Casper, Casper plays fetch with him and names him, and starts to play hide and seek with him before the hunter shoots him. How is that a friendship? Why isn't there more scenes of Casper teaching Ferdie to act like a real fox, rather than a puppy, and teaching him to grow? Also Casper is weak in this short, just telling the hunter not to shoot Ferdie but he doesn't use his scary side to scare him off before the hunter does so. In the next short "A Haunting we Will Go", Casper befriends a baby duck, teaching it to swim and fly, and intentionally scares the hunter and his hounds away when trying to hurt his friend. More scenes like that would have made this cartoon better, but instead the writers were insistent on killing Ferdie in spite of a happy ending. Why they chose to do the cartoon this way, God only knows. Ferdie's death is still sad, but we barely get to know him or see him bond with Casper and for that reason, the death just doesn't have a deep emotional impact on me like it did on others. Also where are Ferdie's parents? He is a baby for crying out loud! My guess is the same hunter shot and killed them, before doing the same thing to their son. In the next short the parents of the duck Casper befriends eventually grow to accept and love him because of his friendship to the baby duckling. If they insisted on Ferdie getting shot, I would have rather seen it he got shot, but Casper's love saved him, and have the short end with Casper befriending Ferdie's family and other foxes. That would have been a better ending. Instead they saved that for the next short, where Casper's friend was cute but not as lovable as Ferdie. Lots of plot holes in an 8 minute cartoon, far too many.
