Dormouse in the house

This little guy is a Japanese dormouse. And he was hibernating - in someone’s house!
This species of dormouse is unique to Japan, and has been here for millions of years - some call it a living fossil.
83-year-old Toyoko Nagase discovered him in a mountain of futons.

It couldn’t find a place to sleep in the forest,
So it snuck into the house.
Toyoko made him comfy, but the little guy woke up and went back to the forest.
