The Real Story Of King David - The Naked Archaeologist 115 - King David

  • Featuring amateur archaeologist, enthusiast and multi-award winning investigative filmmaker, Simcha Jacobovici, The Naked Archaeologist is an irreverent, entertaining and eye-opening journey into the fascinating archaeology of the ancient world. Along the way, new discoveries are made, lost treasures revealed, and ancient mysteries uncovered.
The Bible paints a picture of King David as a mighty hero - capable of slaying giants, conquering enemies, and starting the messianic line that leads to Jesus. But for decades archaeologists have been struggling to find evidence of David's mighty kingdom. Now the archaeological remains of three sets of gates in three ancient cities might just hold the key to verifying David's story.

The scripture states that David sent men to bring Bathsheba to him. It never said that she had much say in the matter. Also, the first son, the one of adultery, died before he reached the ceremonial age (8th day) to be circumcised and thus was never named or ceremonally added as a Israelite. Solomon was the second son that Bathsheba bore David.

The boundary of David's kingdom is described in 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, and it isn't said to be big. It was the largest to that point for Israel, which was never, and still is not, a large sprawling empire. But it was an economic powerhouse, which doesn't necessarily mean it had to be large. Isn't Israel one of the smallest nations today, yet very prosperous economically? Last I read, it is rated the 8th most powerful country in the world, with the most advanced technology, able to send a rocket to the moon last year, and yet only about the size of New Jersey. It still doesn't doesn't have the monumental architecture found in Dubai to leave a lasting impression. Why does this have to be the rule?
Israel was also overrun by the Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek and Roman empires that looted it. Not to mention the Ottomans. Why do archaeologists seem to forget this when they dismiss the claim that David was a great king?

@@lyongreene8241 I'm not a Deist or Atheist, and can't see how you come to that conclusion. My point regards what the Bible says, and how it differs from many archaeologist's false expectations, and how those false expectations become a straw-man argument against the Bible. A clearer example is the Exodus. The Bible says in 1 Kings 6 that it happened 480 years before Solomon started building the first temple; placing the Exodus in the 15th century BC. But most archaeologists insist it happened in the 12th century then call it a myth when evidence for the Exodus isn't found in the 12th century and dismiss the mountains of evidence for the conquest of Canaan found in the earlier time period indicated by the Biblical writers. A similar things happens with David. Many archaeologists start with their assumption of what David's kingdom should look like, ignore what the Bible actually describes, then dismiss the evidence found because it doesn't match their faulty preconception.

Isreal is a legitimate state. Ever heard of spoils of war? Isreal was conquered by axis powers, then was reconquered by the allied powers. When the war was over isreal was given to the news who were unjustly murdered and thrown into camps. Where do you put millions of displaced peoples from different countries, you give them the land back, they have had since the beginning of written history.

If you want to learn about the bible and its Patriarches, read the old testament, the books of the chronicles, 1st & 2nd. Samuel and 1st & 2nd Kings. You will get all the details that were written by men of God, all scripture is the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. You will not learn any true facts by watching comedy. I enjoy watching the Naked Archeologist because I love the Holy Land, and what it represents. Sometimes I think that instead of establishing truth, doubt is presented in the detales.

@@tictok6948 The Bible, especially the Deuteronomistic History you mention, is _not_ and was not intended to be an objective history. It is theological history, meaning that the writers had religious motivations behind writing their books, not historical ones. For instance, the D.H. portrays Hezekiah as a great and wonderful king and presents his son Manasseh as a horrible king. In actual fact, Hezekiah was a religious zealot who enforced monotheism on his people and then got spanked by the Assyrians. Manasseh, on the other hand, brought economic prosperity to Israel and was an all-around better politician. But because, unlike his father, he allowed for religious pluralism, and priestly writers of the Deuteronomistic History call Manasseh the most wicked king to ever live and offer no praise for his successes.
The Bible is biased, inaccurate, propagandistic, and so seldom to be taken at face value.

Hi Charles, only 279 gods? The Hindi people alone have that many gods. But there is only one supreme God, who created the wonders of the heavens, the seas and all the marvelous life that live in that habitat, the earth itself is so beautiful and awe inspiring, all created by the word and thoughts of God. Why do you think that God hates the gentile nations? I am sure that you think that is so, but I can assure you that you are very wrong. God made a convent with the Patriarch Abraham that through him all the nations would be blessed, by faith we the gentile believers are woven and grafted into the family of Abraham as heirs. Why would God send His Son to die a horrific death on a cross? Did He die only for the Jews? As gentiles we didn't have any hope of salvation because it was only for the Jews, but God closed the eyes of the Jews and dulled their understanding so that they, the Jews wouldn't recognize their Messiah, so because the Jews rejected Jesus, the Son of God, the gentiles were given the same opportunity to believe that Jesus Christ is Lord and be saved from the second death, which is hell. The Jews had the one true God, but they always wanted the gods of the people's around them. The gentiles are loved just as much as the Jewish people are, He tells us every day how much He loves us. Yes, God does talk to us everyday through His Prophets.

When scripture was written there was a simultaneous goal of building cultural or tribal identity. There were many heroes in other cultures, such as Herakles, Odysseus, Achilles, Gilgamesh and so on. Other characters are treated heroically such as in the deaths of Saul and Jonathon, or the final act of Samson. The Israelites needed a heroic leader blessed by God if only to construct a kind of a shared cultural courage.
There's a dry creek bed on the plain where any battle might have occurred down the mound of Gat. There are many well rounded river stones. I once told a busload of Christians the government places them there for the tourists to take home. Nevertheless,.... the weakest, most vulnerable place on the human skull is the temple. A well-placed stone (as I've held in my hands on the more precise estimate of where the battle occurred), delivered with the best speeds from an authentic shepherds sling, would very likely be quite deadly. The attempt at comedy in this section was truly anti-empirical and obfuscating.
Instead the story why Israel sent all foreskins from circumcisions to communist countries, Cuba especially. There the Cubans planted them in their agricultural fields in long rows. This is where their dictators come from (1960's joke).

David's seed became big but I don't know what Bible this guys reading, David is just someone the God of Israel used to control and punish sinner's. But David was a tent dweller and you will never find any buildings built in his lifetime. Though at the end of David's life a home was built for him but it was made from wood so there wouldn't be no trace of that either. David did get the material to build a house for the God of Israel but the Bible says he received trees from Lebanon and not Stones so the first Temple was made of wood and built at least seven years after David's death by King Solomon. The rest of the Israelites may have lived in wooden homes that once belonged to the Canaanites and David's first place he took to be his home was most likely the best house but weather it was brick or stone we don't know Samuel writes that David did eventually live in a home that was bigger than the other homes around it. You can only trust the Torah, you can't even trust the Psalms because they pass them all off as if David wrote all of them when he only was responsible for under twenty of them, some of the pslams you can tell were written in Roman times. But David's home does not exist for if anything he added on to an existing Jubsite home or built one out of wood, definitely not stone. But like I said except for the Torah the books of the Bible can't be trusted as factual history.

1 Samuel 17:12 Now David was son of the Ephratite (Ephraim descendant of Yosef)from Bethlehem Judah.Jesse had eight sons and during Saul's reign was already an old man.

David was from the tribe of Judah, And this is proven, we know for fact that David's Great Grandfather, Boaz was from the tribe of Judah. Bethlehem is in the lands of Judah (Judea) as is Jerusalem. The lands of Ephriam were further north. We know this because the inheritence of the tribes of Israel are documented fully in the book of Joshua. This is also documented in the geneology of Jesus Christ in the Gospels of both Matthew (1:1-17) and Luke (3: 23-38) in the new testament. The reason David is called the son the Ephratite is because Bethlehem has another name (Micah 5:2) Ephrathath. Micah also tells us which tribe whose land Bethlehem is in.
      Micah 5: 2
But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.
David was called the son of the Ephratite because of where his father, Jeese was from. not because of the tribe he was in.

Billijo Maynard 1 Samuel 17:12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons. The man was an elderly old man in the days of Saul.
Who is that “We” that you are referring to?If you have read The Bible meaning The Torah and Prophets on its original language and if you know The Torah...1 Samuel 17:12 speaks about David being and Ephraite who was born in Bethlehem Judah since it was a Bethlehem in the North as well.Birth place of person doesn’t determine or change to which tribe he belongs to and this would be confirmed even from every 10 year old Jews.
Ruth 1 and 4 reconfirm David being a Ephraite meaning of Ephraim of Yosef and not of Yudah.
I do understand that Romans like you have a reason why to BELIVE differently as there are many nonsense things in the so called Paulian “New Testament “ but the reality is that Shiloh belongs to Ephraime territory and if you read Genesis 48 and 49 that refers to “end days” you will see the importance of Ephraim and so it can answer who is that David of Ephraim that Ezekiel talks about.
1 Samuel 17:12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons. The man was an elderly old man in the days of Saul.

Ezekiel 37:16-28 Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions:
17 And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.
18 And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these?
19 Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.
20 And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thine hand before their eyes.
21 And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:
22 And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all:
23 Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God.
24 And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them.
25 And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children’s children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever.
26 Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.
27 My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
28 And the heathen shall know that I the Lord do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.

David unified small villages of iraelites to defend against invading philistines.. Maybe he was a ganster but he unifed other villages to joint the cause.. When he as the cheif and his troops winning, of cause the unifed villages giving him the title of king.. So its not shocking if he haven't build monumental building.. He is founder, conquering neighbouring village who still against them.. Building need money and manpower.. In my opinion, evethough David didn't build massive monuments, it did not mean David is only a myth..
