Although this is demonstrated on guitar, you can use these concepts with any instrument (especially keyboards, which are often used in power metal).
We start with a simple riff in the key of A minor (we're in standard tuning).
And there are only 3 chords we're playing: Am, G, F
On we play the progression, we start to add different metal guitar methods and techniques. After mastering these techniques, you can start mix and matching and come up with endless ways to play this riff and write your own power metal riffs.

You know you've got the best \m/ guitar channel when bass players are subscribed and tuning in, and stepping up their game.
You know he's doing it right when he can explain it simple enough for a bass player to understand and apply it. 😂🤣😂🤣 I joke... or am I? 😂😂😂
🤔🤔🤔🤣🤣🤣
Seriously though, I didn't know anything about this channel until a couple of weeks ago, when his Circle of Fifths video showed up in my feed. I finally understood, so maybe you're right..
We appreciate that! 🤘
And here I was expecting Dragonforce-esque tremolo picking lol... reminds me what I've been working on this week. I keep coming up with variations on a theme, trying it out in different ways. I ended up taking it in a completely different direction while still sounding 'familiar' to the ear.
thanks for sharing!
We're definitely due for a Dragonforce style video on here!
I really enjoy this second channel. I wish i had known about it earlier, didnt find it until a month or so ago. Now i have to binge the whole back catalog and catch up. 🤘🤘🤘
Dude, thank you for being a part of this! Glad to have you here, too! 🤘
Awesome brother. Thanks for the lesson
🤘
Great lesson thank you!
🤘
I get so much out of these videos. Thank you!
Great to hear this!🤘
Another great example of how to expand riffs. Rock On 🤟
🤘
That's awesome Jason I'll try that out. Thanks 🆒🆒🤘🤘

Hey Jason ! this lesson was AWESOME ! By the way ! you mentioned catchy melodies, Would you be interested in a lesson based around Ensiferum, more precisely the old-ish Ensiferum where i think they specialised in kind of simple yet very very catchy melody, and not too difficult, it oftentime revolves around the minor scale (i think😂)
Thank you for this great lesson, ton of useful value in there ^^
Ensiferum has some cool tunes!
I know I could use the Metal Theory video, Im 45 and I get this feeling in my gut whenever other player mention theory related stuff. Its not like I havent tried, Ive borrowed videos and books that others recommend but It never sinks in.
Here's our latest theory (Ken breaks this down so it's easy to use and understand): czcams.com/video/HTSpt4tQHNU/video.html
Great lesson. I actually have most trouble getting that clean chugging sound you get.
🤘
Damn Jason thank you! Harmonising sounds so cool. I was looking here and there for a while how this works (or what this effect already is, haha). And now it turns out this is so so easy and easy to explain. 🤘
Edit. So after triing i still dont get it when i try to harmonise a melodie😂. Maybe you can get deeper on this topic in another Video?
I can definitely do another video going deeper into that!
"Bass players as well" good one, thanks for the laugh!
😅 🤘
