follow up with Linux testing machines. more Linux videos would be great.
Its LinusTechTips not LinuxTechTips
Well done for noticing.
This channel caters to tech that people use. Even their extreme builds were basically your normal builds on steroids.
Linus Torvalds and Linus Sebastian combine
that the idea :D
You must mean "tech that plebs use" ;)
Please, do a Linux version of this video. Thanks!
He won't. Linux is way over his head. Have a look at Level1Techs
he won't
you probably want a linux version for hacking or something.
Yes please.
Yeesh, people really need to stop this nonsense. I used Linux for 8 years, until I bothered getting windows 7. AND I loved windows way more than linux, it was night and day in terms of performance norms and compatibility. HOWEVER I found myself missing being able to feel like it was MY computer and not the OS's to just do whatever whenever, so for the past 3 years I've been running a dualboot on every machine I own. (In all that time, I never found someone wanting Linux for "Hacking or something".)
"I never found someone wanting Linux for "Hacking or something""
Well that's odd, since this is why most skiddies hop on Kali Linux as soon as they want to do fun stuff.
IT specialists hate him, find out how local man transferred 10 gigabyte file in seconds!
Time is money.
Ark if time = money it stands to reason that money = time.
fake news. confusing video.
for your information, i farm water cress
I wouldn't say hate, that's a bit strong, but I think he knows less than he thinks he does. Nothing wrong with that of course. I do find him entertaining though and seems to come across some good ideas from time to time. I do feel that these videos are becoming more rushed? What is the obsession with keeping videos to around 8-10 minutes? He's not good at explaining things like this, he talks far too fast. You'd probably have to watch the video 5-6 times if your new to this stuff.
Am I the only one who thinks that I know alot about computers, but then I watch shit like this, and now I think I have no fucking clue about anything?
Right? I have my masters in cyber security and even i had to pause and rethink my life choices... xD
If you have a masters degree in cyber security, this is pretty basic stuff
Abdou Benbada it is, he went through it so fast, I just thought it was funny lol
True that :)
Metrix haha same
Can you stop making the ad segments so loud compared to the normal video? This is actually illegal on US television. The volume has to be normalized.
Good thing this is the internet Kappa
TheShoxter still happens on my tv and I live in the us
all the us stations have loud asf commercials
This may be the internet, but ads shouldn't be louder than the actual content if possible, which it is possible with the integrated ads LTT do.
But the loundness lets me know when to click away :P
>40gbpz!!!!
>speed of 10gbps...
that's LTT everyone
If he just turned RDMA on in windows features, it would have worked
Yeah but this way he can milk another video out of it...
But RDMA is not supported on Win10 etc?
It totally is supported. Use it all the time.
It's 2017. Linux isn't hard. Educate your viewers a little. It would be nice if more people figured out that Linux blows Windows out of the water for everything but cutting edge gaming.
There's no reason to run a home server on Windows. Linux does ALL of it better.
Also video editing is not very good at linux right?' But for everything else, I agree.
I'd agree if I hadn't had to get a Windows server for CAD software that only runs on Windows... :-p
Linux is fine for video editing! I'm currently using lightworks: ( www.lwks.com/ ), even though linux cant run the creative suite, I prefer lightworks over premiere pro - it has been used extensively in major films, and despite the learning curve, is very plesant to use.
Linux also suffers from countless miscellaneous problems. You will need an IT department worth of time just to do your daily work. Linux only makes sense for enterprise or for people who only play around on their computers.
Oh dear, why use time to save time? Seems silly to me too...
Nobody is going to read this but if you want to get 40gbe Ethernet you need to get a connectx-3 FDR infiniband which also supports 40gb ethernet as well as 56gb infiniband. An example would be the MCX353A-FCBT. You don't have to get that one of course, a good way to find them is to search ebay for "QSFP+". QSFP+ is the connector that basically aggregates 4 SFP+ 10gbe lines and is also used for FDR infiniband. Once you got 2 cards you just need to get a QSFP+ direct attach copper cable and done. Just bare in mind that all that is probably going to cost you closer to 300€ than 100€ but they are plug and play.
Yep the MCX353A-FCBT is the best way to go right now. One port is on Ethernet with a 10G switch , one on infiniband using DAC cables. Debating to fork out a grand for a used IB switch.
Just for clarity the MCX353A-FCBT is a single port card! You need to configure it in the driver to do 56G infiniband or 40g ethernet. (New ones are preconfigured for infiniband). If you wanted an additional 10g link on top of 56g infiniband you would have to get another nic like an intel x520-da1 (1port) or x520-da2 (2 port) (both very cheap). Personally i would keep everything Ethernet rather than infiniband. Do a 40gbe Direct attach from my workstation to the nas server (or second workstation) and then buy a cheap 2 port 10g SFP+ mikrotik switch to link them to the rest of the network
The newer FDR Standard is a lot more expensive, mainly because it is still used in Cluster Computing, so there arent a lot of old datacenter parts on ebay. Thats the nice thing about QDR Infiniband. Its really fast but old enough to be basicly obsolete in the Enterprise Market.
tl;dr
lol wow
I would like to see a follow up on linux
potato potato potato potato potato potato potato Why should that be the case?
***** I dont think you will need an anaNAS
Perhaps Peter, like myself, has several linux machines in the basement that would benefit greatly from 40 gigabit transfer speeds
@@potato_x69 yes, because infiniband 40GB switches are not a thing. Joke's on you there bud.
I absolutely did not understand anything
It's because you're a dog.
woof
Uiriamu Busujima bark

Of course I'd like to see the Linux update for this video 🙂
LinuxTechTips series anyone?
We need LinuxTechTips ASAP! Linux is Future.
Yes, this is definitely a good idea. They're using Linux on their new datacenter because it's necessary to support the hardware. They might as well share the information they're gathering for their own build with others. They should do a complete in depth how to based around that build. I'd really like to see it, and it would be absolutely fascinating.
David Kahn
Is that so? Even in that case, I'm sure they could still arrange an episode on it. Someone from the company could come on and talk about how it's set up and the different configurations possible. You know, they'd discuss and show the hardware inside and then show the software side of things on Linux. Would make a good opportunity for the company to talk in depth about their products too, if they were looking to make a sponsored video.
Linus will need to hire someone who knows all about Linux i guess.
That would be awesome, maybe you can show some support for this recommendation for techquickie..
linustechtips.com/main/topic/10860-thread-for-tech-quickie-video-suggestions/?page=47#comment-9324979
Do a test with Linux. Stop fucking around with Windows.
Just because Windows is popular doesn't mean that its the best platform to test hardware like this. Most people who care about 40 Gbps network speeds are people who will have linux servers and wont be confined to Windows. Linux is free anyway so...
Because its the most popular platform is probably why its used and why it probably IS the best os to test with...?? Your logic is busted broteinshake.
Jason Anderson all I'm saying is that the average consumer won't care about really high network speeds. the people who do will already have Linux servers.
With Linux you could also do a Infiniband router / switch!
Popularity doesn't indicate anything in the computing world.
Holly fuck is nothing ever easy? Install, patch, config, modify, change, override, adjust, circumvent, setup. Follow these steps, and there is a good 40% change this might actually work.
Brandon Francey it's been like this since forever with PC hardware. This infiniband thing is more of a novelty niche setup not expected by windows' design.
when stuff is not "standard" for basic consumers, things are harder to install since OS like windows doesn't support it natively most of the time. Does "day to day" people need more than 1gb transfer speed? most SSD are below 600m/s write speed, so no. They don't feel the need to put energy in something only the niche user base would want.
Brandon Francey well, you should be happy that you can get the hardware at least and not build it
wasnt that a daft punk song?
I'd recommend using CentOS or another Linux server OS if you're gonna mess around with InfiniBand. Windows dosen't support it well, but an Enterprise grade Linux OS will, because it's MADE for that kindof
thing. Just ask Linus why they're going to use Linux on their new datacenter. Because it just works (and it's free).
I'm REALLY loving the extra things you guys do in the videos lately. that little mortal combat part was well done and would like to see more of that
You guys Rock! I look forward to any videos you guys post, even if it does not apply to me! Your vids are informative, quick, and most of all fun!!! Thanks for all the tips and keep up the great work!
I am surprised he didn't put on his fake fingernails and fondle all of the parts
All About That TEC! the nails are at 2:39!
it's not the same QwQ she doesn't fondle any computer parts, though.
at 2:35 you can see its her that has them
it was a joke boi watch yo jet
All About That TEC! now that I know who the real nails belong to I want to see them again. lol
I'm a Linux guy, show me this showdown with Linux!
I think the only interesting part about repeating this on Linux would be if they could tune the kernel networking stack and other stuff for better performance (Like buffer sizes and whatnot). That's a level of flexibility that may not otherwise be present in Windows, and it would be cool to see if they could achieve any noticeable gains.
I wonder if they could run linux in a VM pass the hardware straight through; then team 4 virtual 10gb nics to the linux box; thus achieving the same thing with way too many moving parts and much more confusion!
"less than $100 on ebay"
And after this video, that price went up to $500, just like after his previous video on that korean monitor that now cost over $1000.
Love these videos Linus, the amount of tech insight you pack into a mere 5-6 minutes makes for a great watch! Fine editing as well, love the videogame bit =P Subs deserved.
19 views. 160 likes
And dislike before they watch it.
Christoffer Lantz Haxors!!
I wonder when Linus will hit puberty
He did @ 13. He later found out he was 90% female after blood came out of his p3n!s.
Red Hood When someone censors the word "Penis"
He won't hit puberty because he had his balls cut.
XD lol TECO01EJG
Wait, his balls got cut?! Did I miss something? If yes then I blame my Internet.
New series, Linus does Linux. Yes please :)
Imagine someday Linus goes to review Linus' workstation
Yoppy Halilintar it would be wonderful.
I would love to see the Linux video. LinuxTechTips? Would watch it instantly!
a tutorial on Linux side will be highly appreciated.
Linus, SHOW US 40Gb/s TRANSFER SPEEDS ON LINUX! SHOW US HOW EASY THAT IS!
Yesss! More videos like this! Thank you :) (Though I haven't completed watching it, so I'll leave my review/upvote until the end)
Glad you guys finally discovered Infiniband. I was hoping you would have incorporated it into your awesome storage server.
EARLY NOTAFICATION SQUAD WHERE YOU AT
hello mans

STFU kid.
Linux videos please!!! Would be awesome to see more videos from both sides of the PC Master Race world ;)
Ryan Seipp Linux is almost as bad Mac pleb
soundspark The Linux Foundation does not own any of the GUIs however many of them look just as good as Windows and/or Mac. It's as simple as finding something you like. Linux's strongest point is that you can make it whatever you want, with just a little time and effort
I was just trolling, i've never actually tried Linux =)
I loved that little fighting segment in there
This was actually one of the most interesting video's in recent months. Thanks Linus!
I am ahead of y all because I watch at 2x speed
at first... I thought it was made by another youtuber just because of the thumbnail...
Yes, please give more information on this. It is very interesting.
I learned a new trick! I didn't know about the manual metric! Thanks Linus!
A follow up on linux would be nice.. Or smothering a mobo to death with 100g of thermal paste and solder would also please me..
I would love to see the linux transfer speeds! =)
You know, the only reason I use windows on my main rig is to ensure I can run all games, but I use Linux on all my other machines including my main laptop, so it would be nice to see more Linux content on this channel in general.
Really good video Linus. More like this!
Linux videos would be great
like level1tech?
I'd pay to watch Linus Tech Tips read Torvald's reviews of Intel Patches.
I want cookies
please

psygn0sis honesty food is way better than that
Add a Infiniband switch and use it to interconnect GlusterFS nodes. At my job we have a Isilon system that uses Infiniband between nodes and then dual 10G for each node to the network. So regardless of what node you connect to you have the full available bandwidth on the connection as the data transfer between nodes would be through the infiniband connections.
Wow! Awesome Video! Love to see networking stuff generaly from LTT! :)
Will this work with my PowerBook G3 running Mac OS 8?
do a linux follow up.
I see that decal on your door Linus. it's great to know we have a fellow brown coat spreading our message across the verse!
Damn good video guys, and perfectly timed for me too. Thank you! would love a follow up with a windows server box. Thank you!
Yea but will this make my 56k internet fasterer
no, but you will gain 10fps on crisis!
PLEASE DO A LINUX
Great episode. Now I think the next progression might be to build on this and find out how best utilize a Mellanox Switch and perhaps incorporate the internet LAN connection, all together, as inexpensive as possible. And yes in a windows environment. ;)
This is very very helpful for off grid applications
linus a) of course I wanne see a follow up video and b) who is that girl with purple hair ?
shes some chick that works there
Mac Sparrow his wife
Nope, not Yvonne.
I'm guessing the girl's Chelsea.
I want a follow up with Windows Server.
ASe7en go fuck yourself windows fanboy
ASe7en Windows is proprietary, badly coded, spyware, and insecure. Linux is the superior OS
Did anyone else notice they removed the magnetic Screw holder after 4:37 because Linus kept hitting off it :D
Do more of this, it's interesting.
i would do this just to say i have a fibre connection because the NBN was too slow
*rip australian internet*
it's not WAN internet, it's LAN
Yeah, I'm aware of that. I was making a joke about how the NBN is so slow and so to help my sanity I could say at least I have a fibre connection to another machine. It may not be the internet, but it's another machine. Fibre internet comes to my house in Jan-Jul of 2019, and that will likely only be a maximum of 10mbps due to FTTN.
In NZ we've got fibre pretty much everywhere now. Wonder why Oz is so slow on this?
The answer is pretty simple. Size.
Cyba IT a lot of partisan intervention in what should be a fairly common sense upgrade of essential telecommunications infrastructure.
"Uploaded 2 seconds ago"
Me - AHHHH
you got to love this channel.
This has to be one of my favorite channels.
linux test please
I'm genuinely curious to see which operating system gives the faster speed :0
Linux hands down. Windows is way to large for its own good. Linux blows it out of the water in pretty much everything.
something like 98% of supercomputers run on Linux, I let you guess why (hint: it's not because those people don't have money)
FFS ,FINALLY LINUS WITH THAT AIAIAI TMA-2 !
For got sake for how long iv been waiting for you to acknowledge its existance! its been a year sense you got that AIAIAI TMA-2's.
Tell me when the review is coming! TELL ME I MUST KNOW !
Love the animations. The fight scene was hilarious.
the AiAiAi site is dead...RIP
yep linus did his job we blew the site to ashes
Ai ai ai
Itsssss working: aiaiai.dk/
I hope this was only an excuse to do the linux version later. Infiniband on Windows [insert huge FACEPALM here]
Point to point is not an infinniband limitation, just drop in an infinniband switch. I work with switched 40G networks all the time... and even more fun when binding two 40G ports!
Linux is faster ONLY if you use the right kernel. Use the wrong kernel, and you'll be slower than an on-board video card playing a 4k FPS.
Use the right tool for the right job. Yeah, you can hammer in a screw into some wood, but a power drill with a screw bit works so much better.
Something else worth mentioning is that if your PC CPU or the server CPU isn't very fast you could seriously benefit from increasing the MTU size (aka Jumbo Packets) that way the CPU doesn't have to try and keep up with as many acknowledgements to data packets coming across the network.
Something else worth mentioning is that the Automatic Metric will only be an applicable option if the server is running windows. A Linux server will use a different method of stating the metric for the interface so it'll be a little more complicated to set up. I had to configure my FreeNAS server with a Mellanox Connect X2 10Gbit SFP+ card and a OM4 LC to LC fiber optic cable. Telling FreeNAS to use the 10Gbit link for file sharing as oppose to the 1Gbit link dedicated for SSH/SFTP internet access was easy but it doesn't use the metric to configure it.
Please do a Linux and a windows server version as well! Love your network related videos! As a creativ proffessional, I found it very use full and educational.
Do it right, do it with linux!
"Posted 1 second ago"
I may actually be first this time.
That's nice that the old outro is back!
Thanks Linus! That was the missing part we were looking for in our Business.
Linux users are kind of like the vegans of the computing world.
Was that on Reddit? I swear I thought it was original.
So in conclusion: it didn't work cause Windows is shit
It didn't work because Windows 10 is a consumer OS, and Windows server and Linux are server OS. Guess which works better for server equipment?
Benjimaestro Linux is not a server OS. MacOS is not a server OS, yet it would have worked perfectly fine on either of those.
The problems with Windows are much deeper than just being purely a consumer OS.
TheMacfruit Linux is a server OS. Why do you think it's mostly used for servers and the X server is a server? Because remote users are meant to log in, remotely.
LOL I bought these cards 3 days ago and I was about to install them when I saw this video, great timing XD
This video couldn't be more relevant... just came home from a talk about iSCSI, Infiniband and Gfs2 only a few minutes ago to see this video on CZcams.
Yes, PLEASE show this on Linux. I quit Windows sometime last year and it is nice seeing such a mainstream person in tech even mention Linux in a way that is not negative. My favorite distro is MX Linux which is based on Debian but is more user friendly than Debian.
30 seconds in, I love it. No one does over-the-top like Linus!
fun fact : if you launch NetworkManager in command-line, when configuring an interface, you have Infiniband and WiMAX options even if the card isn't a infiniband one !
(NetworkManager is a Linux config utility for network, usually the "Wi-Fi dropdown menu. its command is nm-cli on Ubuntu, provided you installed it)
3:16 insert card into PCI slot and push as hard as you can on the heatsink
This could be interesting peared with a cheap-ish switch and a linux server for office networks :o I mean the linux server could use the full 40gbit and the clients then get to share it as they can't use it all at the same time. Great video!
I was wondering when you'd get around to this.
Yes please do a followup showing it actually saturated with a server version.
Where is the 3D version of this intro? That was awesome!!
"Look out Linus! There's a snake in your test bench!"
-Me every time it comes on screen
Those coral snake or king snake cables are looking good.
The fighting scene was fucking awesome! Also, I would love to see a follow up video. :D
this should be a series
I just fell in love with Miss"Soooo last week"
yes follow up please! I use Oracle Solaris 11.3 with ZFS, so may be you try it to with your 1 PB Storage server and this nic's.
Thanks!
Do you guys ever stop and realize you are scientists, the fact that you all are and have 4.1mil subs makes me super happy. Keep up the science!
You could potentially build a pfsense box with an Infiniti Band & ethernet adapters to bridge the two networks together.
I would like to see a follow up on linux ...i bet it work out of box,or almost out of box depends of kernel and distribution used..
let's definitely see that follow up!
I've used InfiniBand on only the highest spec SAN and NAS equipment. One of them was a EMC Isilon 1Pb setup which had 10Gb/s Fiber to the client computers and 40Gb/s InfiniBand between the 7 nodes. This setup cost our company a metric ton of money! To think now you can now buy InfiniBand for under $100 is blowing my mind!.
This was pretty cool, I'd be interested in seeing the original NICs installed in Linux machines, but otherwise a solid video.
Hey Linus you forgot a big use case! You need infiniband or something similar to cluster pcs together, I know many compute clusters have to use it over 10gige because otherwise there's a bottleneck both in terms of latency and transfer speed
This is one of the best produced and with best content videos of LTT!
would love to see follow up video on this
Yes for the follow up
