What does it mean?
@@owl3650 The grandfather is trying to make her stop trying to help him by stating that all people not just him do not help. Knowing that someone is in need is subjective and usually a child learns to distinguish this depending on their surroundings and upbringing by parents.
This sort of statement will make her believe for the rest of her life that she shouldn't bother helping others because there is a possibility they don't need it. So she won't commit an "Evil" like the grandfather is implying.
The grandfather has been my favorite family member, ever since opal was released. His song and his personality felt the most genuine out of all of them. He's still awful for neglecting Claire but atleast he's not lying about his vices.
mirror man S tier
Mirror man stan here, sup!
@Pristine Artifact I feel that it's not just smoking when it comes to the grandfather. Yes, the smoking is sad, but more of the outright neglect of Claire comes from the fact that he is also addicted to the television. He doesn't spend enough time with Claire because he values watching his shows over paying enough attention to her. To Claire she is only seen as the cigarette go-getter because that's the only time the grandfather diverts his attention away from the television.
Everyone in that house is broken and all of them have addictions that help them escape from reality. This includes Claire. This is how the cycle continues.
Unfortunately the father was really genuine as well. That's exactly how complete narcissists act, I only know because father's brother is one

I can imagine what he means by "they fight over me like dogs!" Commercials are much easier to understand without a visual stimuli than tv shows are, same with singing. So that's probably why the only thing he can remember is the commercials and the singing, and that's eating away at his soul.
Yeah. No other explanation for it given commercials tend to be as "gentle" in getting information across as possible, for somebody to describe commercials like that either they're annoyed by having to deal with the commercial or, they don't understand what the hell it is.
I always interpreted it as him using the TV as a coping mechanism, hence the "I'm popular here" and "They all sing to me"
He essentially thinks the TV is talking to him and him personally
The second "I'm popular here" hits like a train IT IS SO SMOOTH.
“they want my soul, claire”
sounds so good why the hell
this may be an incorrect interpretation, but i like to think this is less about his smoking habits and more about underlying mental illness, and how the old man uses television as a coping mechanism.
the entire section of the song where he's singing about what's happening on the tv is very revealing to me about his feelings. like with how claire imagines she's part of the bill board family, the old man listens to the tv and imagines he's part of their fun- "i'm popular here, they all sing to me" is a very good line to show this, and is further emphasised when the girls sing in response. "the girls dance too, i presume," "yeah we do," is also a good line.
he imagines that he's able to be there and do everything that everyone else can do, and then when he's brought back to reality, he wonders why it's so easy for them to do what they do. he wonders why it's so easy for them to dance, laugh, and enjoy themselves.
i don't think it's a stretch to say that the old man may be suffering from depression. it can be an utterly soul-crushing experience, and it can prevent you from doing even the most basic things. the old man's depression prevents him from going out and having fun like the people on tv, ("why does it sound so easy to breathe on tv",) he smokes as a coping mechanism for his depression, which in turn only makes him more depressed because of his addiction. it's a vicious cycle for him, only made worse by his subpar living conditions.
i've tried re-writing this 3 times to better convey my point and compress it, sorry if it's still lacking.
I actually really like this interpretation, each family member imagining themselves in their own world, each of them sick and tired of each other and focusing on their own needs and wants in their little world
i think this has some truth to this his presumed blindness could also be fueling some of his habits cause losing one of your 5 senses is super depressing
How did Jack change his voice so much for this one? He’s the only one who worked on this, right?

-waddle waddle-
Separate from Claire’s story I relate to this song. I heard this song first while in the ER after an asthma attack, I was jamming while hooked up to an air tank. I was very sick back then I found this comedic because everyone my age on TV were living happy lives and could run and jump and play and it had been years since I was able to even run. There’s a feeling of betrayal you get when you can hear/see others living the life you want. My uncle once told me that I could just breath if I tried, which instantly made me think of this song
This is quite the unique experience, almost like those very good short films. I hope you are doing well these days❤.

Literally the cleanest loop Ive heard in an edited song
I made my hubby watch Opal with me. He got confused at the ending because the blind grandpa had said Opal didn't smell like Claire and wasn't Claire.
I had to point out that he's the only one who thinks she isn't Claire, and he's blind on top of dying of lung cancer, coughing up blood, he is definitely suffering from oxygen deprivation and experiencing cognitive and mental issues as a result.
After my grandpa passed my grandma became frozen with fear, stuck in a house that was black mold infested due to water damage and it took me 5 years of battling with her in a hypoxic mental state to get her out of there. 3 months after I finally got her to sell the house and move in with me she came to me and apologized for how she behaved, and told me she's feeling so much better being out of the mold that looking back she can actually see how badly the mold/air quality in the old house had affected her mind.
It's hard to describe how someone behaves when they are hypoxic, especially when they are hypoxic for a long time and such was a gradual incline to get there.
The person my grandma had become while in a mold ridden house and unable to breathe properly is a total 180 from who my grandma was before the problem got out of hand and who she is now that she's better.
Crappy? Dude! You did it... It's an amazing loop... Very good job (Buen trabajo)

@@greekgodapollosfarts7823 He was pretty normal compared to the rest
The grandpa is a bit more multifaceted than the other characters. The other characters are just selfish and mean, and even though there is apparently implied to be some trauma that caused them to act like that, it isn't an excuse.
The grandpa, however, seems to be less aware of his effects on Claire. I don't think he really realizes how traumatizing it is for her that he's having her fetch him cigarettes, literally forcing her to let him slowly kill himself.
He definitely isn't a good person, but there's a tragic layer to him that really doesn't resonate in the other characters like it does him.
He reminds me of my grandpas friend a lot he was a drug addict and had some health problems he just lays in bed watching tv he can see but he can’t walk he doesn’t try to help himself at all

Jack Stauber really hit a good middle ground in entertainment. Just enough to entertain and interesr you but not too edgy to a point where it makes you feel like shit.
“They dance too, I assume”
“y e a h w e d o”
This is one of my favorite jack songs. One of the things I keep in mind with him is how he said he never writes nothing meaningless. No matter how cryptic his music is there always something behind it. I can see the what is the clear message, of opal living in a horrible abusive house hold, but I think this one in particular at least, isn't just surface level. Yeah it's seems so obvious of a blind man with a smoking problem using TV to cope but the lyrics tells a bit more. "They're stealing my soul" "they fight over me like dog" "why is it so easy to breathe, on TV" I think this one is actually more about social media as a whole and how the urge to get it's attention is absolutely suffocating
On tv/social media; people make things look so easy, which may make people feel helpless and feel that things are much harder. Fighting over you like dogs- they try and one up each other to impress the audience, to make their own lives seem easier and better, but that leaves an impact much like stealing your soul- making you feel heavier in order to make them feel better. Hope I said this in a way that’s easily understood XD please don’t hesitate to ask any questions, this is my interpretation of what I’m pretty sure is meant by the song
I'd argue topics about social media is more surface level than a fat man's perspective. I've seen fat men all my life, but this one... Was insightful.
This is a wonderful interpretation!
The Asthma Anthem.
