I'm so grateful I moved to Stockholm a month before the pandemic, from talking to my friends and family in America I would so so so much rather be here than there. I can still go to the gym and my kid can go play at daycare, I feel sometimes like we slid in right under the door while it was shutting.
I always enjoy your videos. It is very helpful information and refreshing to get a new perspective.

I think it's really awesome that you're still friends with Linn and that you still talk. What an impact she made on where you are today and in what country you live now. There is something to be said for living in a small city. The pace slows down, you enjoy nature a lot more and the beaches and forests, there is this nostalgic feel almost. How you been to the north of Sweden? The polar circle? or seen the northern lights?
The dark winter could be a cosy time of the year. Buy candels, make a fire, get yourself a wool blanket. A large cup of nice tea and lots of cinnamon buns. And important is to get extra vitamin D. Good luck!

As a Swede I agree with the openness and to be socially correct. I don't know how many times I felt like been stabbed in my heart for being "wrong".

Why is one or two opinions so important for a friendship in Sweden? Can't people who differ in different ways still be friends? Can't I go to the gym, see a movie or have a BBQ with someone who has slighty different opinions to me? I don't get it.

An idea for future videos, what of you invite people from different countries and really show them the swedish experience and make videos about it. Take them with you and do stuff that you really like and show them different swedish things like food and stuff. Idk just an quick idea 👍 Also really enjoy your content stefan!
I would love to move to Sweden, and should have taken advantage of opportunities I had when I was younger. Now that I'm in my mid-40s and have visited Sweden many more times, I would love to move there but don't have a relationship or the job skills to make the move. I hope that I can change that some day because every single time I've been in Sweden, things just make sense.
You should if you like the 4 season changes like living in New York but a bit colder in the fall and spring ( I mean the temperature changes) if you have the kind of work you can speak English like in computer work or any technology kind of work or teaching, the hardest thing is housing, rent a place like in Stockholm is nearly impossible even if you have money but if you can buy a condo or house you can absolutely live here, it’s not that hard to move here just get to know Swedish people via Facebook or another places on social media or other American living in Sweden you will absolutely get help you should live here why not schools are free and collage/ uni for kids and adults , the social benefit are the best in the world and healthcare is the best and free 😊 love Sweden and I lived in NY and Amsterdam so seen a lot in travels but think Sweden is the best in the end

Friends and social life probably! Activities and stuff like that.
Depends where you are in Germany southern germany is more social and more easygoing, Northern Germany is more structured.
I think it's sad to wanna have a whole year of just hot weather. And where there's hot there usually is no point in going for a swim to cool off because the water is almost as warm as you. Intentionally wanna miss out on winter AND a winter + Christmas without snow just ain't right. We are lucky to have 4 distinct seasons. I'm grateful for it. The amount of sunlight I can get behind and rather live somewhere where it's not as dark for so long temporarily.
Everyone has different preferences. I personally would prefer an LA type of Mediterranean climate with 20-30 degrees year round but I know that’s not for everyone ☺️

As a southern European I kinda feel I have more in common with Americans than Swedes :) Even if I have lived here for 28 years.

True. I'm from Sweden and I completely agree, it's very rare that I speak to a complete stranger on the street while it's completely normal in most other countries. Tbh I have no idea why that is, I guess it's a part of our culture😂
Hey there @Stefan Thyron! Fellow PNWer here, I'm from Seattle :) I have been living in Europe for three years. Im currently living in Stockholm with my fiancé - he's a Swede.
If you aren't wealthy, good luck affording health insurance or medical care in the US. Even with a job that pays for part of your medical, it's unaffordable for most Americans and results in a lot of medical debt bankruptcy or just financial hardships. For that reason alone I'd say "visit the US but don't move there."
Medicare or Medicaid ?
@@jojje3000-1 What about them? One only works if you are the poorest of the poor and the other if you're over 65. That leaves the majority of American working people in lower-income and even middle-income jobs unable to afford insurance premiums, deductibles and copays. Medicare also isn't free -- there are supplemental plans needed for it to really work and even then, prescription drugs are sky high, many Americans have to decide whether to eat or buy their life-saving meds. It's a mess.
Did you know that over 40% of American cancer patients have spent their life savings within 2 years of their diagnosis? That's shameful. If you have cancer, the last thing you should have to worry about is money. Medical care and paid leave should keep you in a position where you can focus on healing or if you are terminal, focus on your last months on earth rather than stressed out about money and medical costs.
Universal-single payer, like Canada has, is the most cost-effective, simplest and the most just -- everyone gets it. Period. Their doctors and hospitals are still private, but they get paid by one entity.
We have a lot of work to do in the US to put people over profits. Profits are great but not at the expense of people's health, education and dignity.
We can have both.

The most common thing in Sweden (bad one) is "Skitsnacket" = talking bad about ppl behind their backs, especially at work places. Yes it's like that everywhere but in Sweden is incredibly annoying and common. They've a huge problem to confront or to talk face to face. I would love to change it but it's impossible. It's on their blood and culture and anyone can be affected

The dual home situation is what Armand Duplantis (Pole Vault World record holder, Swedish/American competing for Sweden) recently set up. Buying an apartment in Uppsala where he plans to spend the six warmest months and spending the six coldest month in his other home in Louisana. Saying that the coldest six are way to cold in Sweden and the six warmest a bit to warm in Louisana.
I have myself a dream of buying an apartment or small house in Algarve (South coast of Portugal) renting it out during their tourist season and living their during the cold part of the year.

Im Swedish American dual citizen, but born and mainly raised in Sweden and I have trouble making friends here in Stockholm. I lived in Tokyo for almost 5 years up until recently and it was so much easier to make friends. Now that I moved back to Sweden I find it really hard to make any friends.

Which school did you work in? It's the line of work i went for when i moved here.
Yeah. It took over a year for my boyfriend to get his sambovisum approved. We applied in september 2019 and just the other week got the decision. Swedish migration is not fast in any way possible. A snail with a broken tail (do snails have tails..?) are faster.
It rains more on the coasts over all.
Stockholm is not alot different from GBG.
Stockholm is a way more beautiful city over all but Liseberg kinda equalize that out. (Gröna Lund is a parking lot).
The talk about the weather can often be an opener to other subjects. If you are a bit shy or maybe introvert then the weather could feel like a safe way to begin with. Just my opinion, but people can be so quick judging others.
Just a thought. If you never experience the "bad" weather/climate you wont really appreciate the beauty of the swedish summer once it comes ;)

Toyota is the biggest car maker in the world. So yes japanse car makers are common. You most you will se European brands such as Volvo, Mercedes, Audi, B&W, Wolkswagen, Citroën, Renault, Seat, etc.

it is quite relaxed. I haven't noticed any heated debate about schools opening up in September, which they are as I understand it. Many/Most K-9 schools never even closed :P, not sure about the exact number. People are out and about quite a lot and I rarely see anyone wearing mask. It is as if Sweden did a complete 180 turn and went full maga xD.
I realize you're much too young and I have seen other videos on it but can you talk a bit about early retiring in Sweden? Budget and the weather are not a big concern and if you have already talked about this please direct me to that but I would love to hear your perspective.

Lol yea I know it. I’ve actually been ‘preparing’ myself a bit the last two years by wearing a jacket during our summer temperatures (+25 celsius), people probably think I’m crazy n I’m sure do sweating but it’s the only way imo.

@@ChristinaJLHill um I'm not sure whether i can help you, I came to sweden when i was 7 y/o so it's been almost ten years now, and going to school has taught me a lot of swedish words and now im more fluent than most swedish kids but I'd say it's more like you just get a feeling that there's something wrong or what you say just doesn't feel right or smth lol im sry im no help at all
All Swedes are not reserved, but I guess it depends on who you know and the culture in that group of friends. 😅 I'm very open and so are all my friends.

The big question and answer here I very much agree about. I don't think you need to state your opinion about everything but with Swedes (I am one myself) it's hard to really know what's going on. This night a 12 year old girl was shot in the suburb "Botkyrka" (2020-08-02) during some kind of gang shooting. She died. That's insane! One person I know has written och showed anything about that in Facebook. Does nobody care a 12 year gets killed in the late night? I don't get it. I offcourse understand that you perhaps go to Facebook for more positive things but this is very serious. Imagine this happening in the U.S.? EVERYONE would talk about it. Here it's an strange silence. Even people who do know and condemn it doesn't dare to post anything. What are people so afraid of?

The people living in stockholm are pretty much considered to be insecure soyboys and radical leftist feminazis by the rest of sweden, gothenburg is more relaxed and not so full of themselves. You wanna experience the true north tho, that's the real heart of sweden.
In the gyms in stockholm there are signs in the changingrooms that says "Please do not dye your hair in these changingrooms"
In the north the signs are more likely to say "please do not inject bear blood in the sauna"

How manly you are... /sarcasm. Stockholm is not "full of themselves". That's just a prejudice rest of Sweden has. Lived in Gothenburg for 4,5 years. It's not more relaxed or easy going. Heard alot of people talk shit about Stockholm though. I think it's more of an inferiority complex by the rest of Sweden.

Nja.. Jag har bott i Linköping och Umeå men aldrig kännt mig hemma i deras kulturer.. Och dem skiljer sig ganska mycket sinsemellan..
Men d kanske finns nån viss likhet i de områden som traditionellt också varit svenskspråkiga?
Men muoniodalen, tornedalen, och fjällen har annan språklig bakgrund och kanske därför skiljer sig mycket mer i kulturen, än andra områden - men det är likväl en del av Sverige och svenskar med "sin svenska kultur".
Jag har inte bott i Stockholm hela tiden jag har varit i Sverige... Mitt första nästan två år var jag i Norrköping. Så jag har upplevt lite livet i Sverige utanför Stockholm iaf ☺️

Bulletnutz Thanks for the info. I probably SHOULD move to Sweden! People can go ahead and bash me, but I am a moderate Dem here in the US. What pains me most is the lack of common human decency and courtesy to others that has become far too dominant in the Republican rhetoric these days. I realize there are extremes on both sides, but generally I’d prefer a more reserved approach (I.e. Sweden) if it keeps people from being randomly nasty to each other. There is so much of that going on here. It takes time to get to know people, period. I am an extrovert and I enjoy getting to know people because everyone has a unique story to tell. I am interested in people; it’s a great learning experience. But I am respectful of people’s space. I have several friends who are Republicans, and we all make it work because having those friendships in our lives is more valuable than engaging in “cancel” behavior. From my vantage point, you lose more enrichment in your life when that is your approach. Thx.

All Scandinavians should move to the US to see it from the perspective of actually living, working, studying, etc. (ie: NOT being a tourist) there for at least 1 year. Hopefully this will promote Scandinavians to see what amazing nations they truly have, and that they need to protect and enhance their respective countries from becoming anything that resembles the US.

Strange that Stefan being American has such an unrealistic vision of the American people, I am not American, but have lived in the US for many years, I don't know much about Sweden, but from what I experience here in the US, Americans will rarely give you their honest opinion, their small talk is totally conventional and never moves beyond very narrow acceptable frame, and when they don;t like you they will ghost you, both in professional and social circumstances, without a word of explanation, it is a really weird behavior, Americans are mostly polite, open, chatty, that is all true, but don;t take it as their opinion, it is learned behavior, which is not a bad thing and makes superficial interactions easier and smoother, American openness is very controlled and limitations come very quickly, it is part of culture, which has served American people well, I am not trashing or criticizing Americans, a lot of great people here, they are just not exactly the way Stefan thinks them to be

As a US Citizen I look at Sweden and how well they are doing and wonder how the US would do if we practiced some of swedish economics; free markets, privatized social security and education, taxes that are lowering overtime, less government regulation, more business opportunities, etc

One never knows what one might have in common with a stranger. I have discovered some very interesting connections with a stranger by speaking with them, even if it only has been seeing our common humanity. I might judge someone because of their appearance but then discover by talking with them that my (negative) impression of them when I first saw them was completely wrong, and I saw how we as two human beings really had a lot in common because we were just that, human. Many years ago I lived for a year in Sweden. Jag tycker mycket om Sverige. I feel that I am far more in sync with Swedes then with my fellow Americans (the mentality). BUT, I would agree with Stefan about Swedes being too closed. Having said that, I know too many Americans who run their mouths constantly and say the most inane things and do not know when to shut up. One of the many things that I liked about Sweden is that I never met a compulsive talker! When a Swede has something to say, he/she will say it and be done with it. Swedes are far more comfortable with silence than are Americans. I like that.

I was born in Sweden. And i used to love the winters of 2010-2016. But nowadays there is barely any snow, only this scheisse that idk what its called in english but in Swedish it is called slask. To the people that never get to experience winters, slask is basically a disgusting more liquidy brown version of snow that no one likes that always piles up on roads and pedestrian streets. Last winter there was NO SNOW at all, just slask.

I wish I was over there with him because the way it's been handled here is a total s**t show. So many draconian measures and do much politicization (mostly coming from the Dems), is making life miserable.
Btw I love watching your videos. I was talking to my fiance about living over there. He wants to try to get a visa to live here, but if that doesn't work out I'm moving over there. I'm totally down with that. Tho I'm really not a huge fan of the cold cold winters. But I will definitely drag him up north to see the Northern Lights during the winter!

You mention in one of your videos that Swedes tend to be more reserve to themselves. Being Sweden has some of the worlds' most generous social programs. Folks there work for the common good of the all the people, more like a collectivist society, how is it possible that their can be a bit of indiviualism?
A stable society with safety systems for everybody is the reason the individual has a lot of freedom. One thing does not exclude the other, on the contrary. You confuse social interactions with benefit systems. Swedes are not reserved but understand the importance of giving each other space. Think of it as someone invading your personal space. Or skipping small talk going ahead to personal questions. Stockholm is very densely populated, almost 6000/square kilometre, there is no way to chit chat with everybody because there are people everywhere, public transport is crowded, streets crowded. People commute long distances.
You should also think on the sociability-reclusiveness scale. For instance, many East Asian and Latin American cultures are collectivist, but former tend to be more reclusive and latter more sociable, hence their particular type of collectivism ise quite different from one another.
It's weird when ppl say that swedish ppl are cold and keep to themselves because where i live it's not like that (most of the time at least), our neighbors greet and smile at us when we meet each other outside or while going up or down the stairs, i don't have a lot of swedish friends in school, hell there are like what 6 swedish kids in my class since the majority are foreigners like the whole school, so i can't really say the same for swedish teenagers.
Not sure about your experiences in Sweden you obviously like it , but you seem oblivious to the Islamic takeover of the country and how it will no longer be Sweden in 40 years or less , you mention nothing about the no go zones there , the attacks on swedish people particularly the women, I find your video somewhat innocent and misleading
