- After my dad's first ride on the DR650 inspired him to consider selling his much lighter Kawasaki Super Sherpa, I decided we should do some additional testing. Ride along with him as we carve through the asphalt twisties, slide around on some gravel roads and fight our way through muddy two track trails in beautiful Langlade County Wisconsin!

Your dad did a really good job. Being able to stay focused and trying to convey your thoughts while in control of a big dual sport bike can't be easy. He sure did seem to enjoy the Dr.
Riding with your Dad results in lifelong memories - cherish them!!! I started riding with my Dad in early 70's on mountain trails. His was a Honda Trail 90, mine was a Honda CT 70. Bikes have changed A LOT, but man-o-man did we have fun.
Im glad you got a video out our ride. Turn out very nice
I know that I have said this before, but I'll say it again. It's great to see you and your Dad out there both enjoying the same things. I think it's great. Please keep them coming they are very inspiring. I'm trying to get my kids out doing some of the things that I like as well. So far, I haven't had a lot of luck other than shooting, but they are not very interested in hunting or other sports. I really want to get a bike and see if that is something more that we can do together. Personally, I'm still very interested in the KLR, but you are making some very interesting arguments, or should I say perks about the DR. Please keep the videos coming. I really enjoy all of them.
Get 2 DR’s and don’t look back. It’s such a good bike. Get your son out there with you! I’m looking at getting 2 DR’s to ride with my son soon. Don’t wait, just do it.
Amazing vid!! Great to see your dad's reaction to these two beasts. Not suprised at all at his take on the DR.
Strangely, I did the ProCycle carb kit mod and it completely changes 5th gear. Before the change, 5th was essentially used to lower the RPM at highway speeds and add some speed, albeit slowly and without any life. After replacing the needle, adding the new jet, and opening the airbox, 5th is a surprisingly enjoyable gear. You add throttle response, instant pull, and the capability to add speed at any range in the top gear. The mod adds punch to the performance across all of the gears, especially mid-range third, but reduces the low-end dogginess of 4th and 5th considerably. It's not going to change it to a GSX, of course, but you'll find the rear end breaking loose a lot more than usual. A twist of the throttle brings on torque-y pull through the entire range.
I’m diggin the captions btw 👍. Respect the work that goes into all this.
I'm really glad to hear that! I like them too, helps me worry less about packing all the info in while I'm riding. Works well on videos like this too, so I can still share my thoughts, alongside my dad's.
Voice over good also
I'm happy I made the decision to purchase the dr650 after watching all the reviews anyways i feel like it was a good decision and can't beat the price on them.
Great video. My brother has a DR and it is a great bike that i've ridden a number of times including off road. I own both a XT and KLR. For the off roading that you show I would definitely prefer the XT over a DR or KLR. The XT is smaller and lighter with plenty of torque and power. It lacks the ability to cruise the highway and larger two lane roads which is why I have a KLR.
Now that’s the kind of trails I like! Fun times. Thanks Ben!❤
Like you both...I went from a T7, to the DR 650, and my riding buddy traded his KTM 1190 for a DR 650. Both amazing bikes for sure. But the DR allows us to rip up the trails with Supreme confidence and smiles from ear to ear.
Im seeing a lot of people moving away from the GIGANTIC ADV motorcycles and getting something they can pick up themselves when it falls over on the trail or in the camp ground! LMAO,
Love the videos with Jerry, in fact the first Swanky Cat video I ever watched was when he road tripped your KLR. Definitely looking forward to insight on the Sherpa vs DR comparo, thatll be somewhat similar to a switch I'm considering (DR350 to DR650).
I'm glad to hear that! We'll definitely have to get him back on a little more often. He's actually planning on taking the T7 out west, but maybe someday he'll be taking a DR! I'm glad to hear the comparisons are timely, I hope it helps!!!
Now you have both of the 650 winners on your channel. Tell your dad well done on the DR650 !!!
Those are some sweet looking trails, I'm envious. A common cheap windscreen solution folks do to their DR's is the ManTT windscreen.
Keep Jerry on the channel. He;s best armed gaurd i ever saw ?
I’m 63 and thinking my next bike will be a modified 650.
I have a 400E set up for dual sport, it’s definitely buzzy on the pavement but it’s killer in the dirt.
Well done and looked like a great ride ! Suzuki has forgotten more about building motorcycles than most will ever know .
My problem is that I’m too easily swayed. Now I’m back leaning towards the DR. I have another month until I need to decide and will probably go with whichever bike was featured in the last video I watched.
Same here. I prefer the DR650 rather than the KLR650 because it has a kickstart.
Get the DR and quit being silly!
Haha, oh no! Well if nothing else, it sounds like you're looking in the right direction at least! You'll know when the time comes!
Great video & it’s more like the kind of riding I like . Nothing to rough at my age & riding solo. I just need to find a DR that I can swing a leg over before I commit to getting one . P.S. your dad did a great job .
Ben & Jerry! Didn't realize that till now!
We definitely need Jerry on the mic more often! Lol
Nice vid……fun and informative. The comments you have started adding at the bottom are great!
The Jerry cam is awesome! I’m really glad you get to ride with your dad. I want a DR more all the time. 😁
Thanks so much for doing this series! Trying to make the same choice myself and really digging the content! 🤙
Good deal! I'm glad to hear that!
Duuuude that was sick so amazing and truly living the dream. Couldn't happen to a better person!! Keep it up brother 👊
Well dad I enjoy the dr650 I’m loving it haven’t rode off rode bikes since the early 80s I’m 57 have owned a Honda Valkyrie a m109r street bikes since I’ve gotten older and had a mid life crises I’ve purchased an new dr650 hoping for the best.
I believe you can find the limit of a street tire a lot faster in the dirt than the limit of a dirt tire on the street.
Dad's comparison commentary . . . nice . . . you make good viseo! 🙂👍👍
I gotta admit, Suzuki makes dam good bikes, motors on top of that..
Enjoyed the ride. As an old fart, I went from a T 7 to a Dr. Having fun now.
Go, Jerry, Go....I see the T7 going and a DR replacing it soon.....Garth
I think Jerry really liked the DR!
Seems that way! It'll be interesting to see what happens when he rides the Sherpa again!
You know those ruts are deep when they look like it on camera. Good content! I have a KLX 230, KTM 500 and KTM 890 adv. I am thinking hard about something inbetween the 890 and 500. KTM/Husky 690/701 is what I am leaning towards however this DR650 is looking good. I have a 30 inch inseam so shorter is a nice feature. My riding pace is similar to yours on rough stuff like that. Trying not to break something :) 890 is good until it gets slippery and rutted or steep and need to turn around. 500 is excellent except it vibrates a lot on the road and it is tall AF for my 30 inch legs. 230 is too soft and slow. Easy to bottom out. How does the DR compare to the 701?
Get a Silky big boy saw. you wont be disappointed. Theyre razor sharp and cut so nice. Ive cut up to 10" logs with it, had it for years and is still sharp. Really compact, easy to fit or strap on a backpack.
Also cool to see you out riding with your dad. My dad crashed my DRZ400 a few weeks ago while we were out for a ride, thankfully it was pretty slow speed through some deep ruts. But was still a fun time getting to ride with the old man for sure.
You guys make great ice cream!!!
Both sweet bikes but suzuki beats honda everytime lol
Every time? You obviously didn’t grow up in the 80’s.
And where is Suzuki’s innovation, and technology?!
Don’t get me wrong, my DRZ was one of the best dual sports I’ve ever owned, but, we are in 2024...
My CRF at least has a fuel gauge. And some other modern features...
No offense, but your dad’s voice is actually easier on the ears than yours. And he did a fantastic job at relaying how the DR feels to ride🤗
I still Luv ya videos though! Keep up the great work.
I enjoyed the video and am loving the DR content.
A bit of constructive feedback: I like the new graphics, but the digital shake for every comment was a bit distracting.
All the best!
I like both these bikes and have no problem recommending them and over the heavy KLR.
But unicorn dual sport title belongs to the KTM 690 / Husqvarna 701 / Gas Gas 700. Yes I’m a speed power freak and the 75 hp is intoxicatingly fun. But after that the suspension, the liquid cooling, yet still lower. & better weight distribution light, the clutch & brakes and superior design. It’s literally 20 years advanced. It’s all the things you are going to build these two towards.
Yes the price difference is substantial and that alone as it should will sell many DRs & XRs. But especially since you own one why not intermix it in your comparisons and rides when you can.
KUDO's >> > I'm LQQKin' at both these PiG's as the one I might buy..... lol, these along w/ several others. Would love to find most the
little issues & what the head/head will be as you progress. We shall see? Anyhoo, thanks for the work. peace
Good times, keep the vids coming! you just checking to make sure we’re reading the captions @ 14:09?
Oops haha apparently I need to read them a bit more closely 🤣
You need a Silky saw in your motorcycle pack. Maybe not a Katana per-se, but they are epic. Let's just say I no longer have a wish for a chainsaw when stuck on portage or trail.
Looking forward for the 250 review. I'm on the fence about getting a dr650 as my only bike or going the two bike route with a street bike and a 250 dual sport.
👍👍
Suzuki needs to put more aggressive stock rubber on the DR650.
Love the father son prospective on the bikes now he needs to ride the Honda and give his evaluations of the 2 bikes also how tall is Jerry
It's kinda fun isn't it? He's about my size, little taller and heavier though I think. Once the XR is lowered I'll bet he will like the XR a lot more. Thinking he'll still end up on a DR though ...
Im interested to see how lowering the bike affects its utility. Im bombing a triumph t100 through the woods and down trails with 50/50 tires so ground clearance isn’t a thing for me. Picking better lines is a must though lol
Looking forward to the 250 vs 650. I am looking to get a 200 or 250 over the dr650 for training, but the dr650s used are so cheap and plentiful now.
The DR650 feels so light. Just get a DR and don’t look back. Don’t waste your money on a 250.
Just go with the 650!! You can register them on road and their not really overly powerful or anything still a great bike to start on
that title - "lightweight" and "dr650" i mean... it's a solid middleweight. t7 = heavy. ktm = lightweight.
What type of tires are on the dr
My dr is been super motod it will run its scary fast
Change your DR gearing... I have 49 tooth rear sprocket. Still cruises 70mph.
🇮🇳❤👌❤👌❤
