      Did exactly the thing last year, I didn't realise the bulb was underground . First time growing garlic, really ,massive (solemt) bulbs, dried them , platted like a domestic goddess. Hung them in the kitchen
      This year very different story , so looking to preserve the lot. Thankfully no miner larvae so drying in the shed

    Thanks so much for this video!! I came across it when googling for info on whether garlic hit by allium leaf miner was salvageable. Sadly my entire harvest of my kitchen garden was hit; I had been hoping to cure the bulbs but quickly realized they were infested 😢 BUT thanks to your video I didn't chuck them out, instead I peeled them down and found the bulbs themselves were fine once peeled, so now I have a pile of garlic for the freezer! Thanks so much, really appreciate it! 🤗

    When your making your garlic puree you can fill up ice cube trays and freeze them in that then once they're frozen place them in freezer bags. I also do a basil and garlic puree and freeze them the same way.

      I think it has to be sealed else it might take the odour of other food stuff especially if you have fish in your freezer.

    • @homegrowngarden
      @homegrowngarden  Před 3 lety +2

      @@accaciagame1706 this is true and more likely to flavour everything with garlic. Also, you need a lot of ice cube trays if you have a big harvest. I find the bags stack easier and save space 👍🏻

    If you have garlic that won't cure or store well you can roast them and make a garlic paste. Clean them, toss with a dash of olive oil, roast and then mash them with a little coarse salt. Pack the mash tightly into small jars and top with more oil to make an oxygen barrier. The mash will keep for months if stored in a cool dark place.

    Lovely vlog - very much appreciated! If it helps - Allium leaf miner can apparently be alleviated (to some respect eliminated) by regular spraying with a soapy neem oil mixture. Here in the Nordics it is not as much a problem as white rot (due to our damp winters). If you want to ensure your garlic bulbs 'split' (for spring grown or like you, those planted in seedling trays/pots), you can put them in the fridge for a short period of of time (10 days) between 0 and 10 deg C and this will improve outcomes ('Vernalisation of Garlic").

    Not sure the "hard frost" theory of multiple clove development. I live in Southern California. We get ZERO frost. Our coldest winter temperatures rarely go below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Yet, we get beautiful, multi-clove bulbs at harvest. Plant in late October, harvest late June. The only bulbs that don't split into multiple cloves are those I've tried to harvest too early. Most of the splitting seems to take place late in the growth cycle, regardless of temperatures. Gilroy, California, the "Garlic Capital of the World" is in the northern part of California's great Central Valley. No frost, very little cold weather. Bountiful garlic harvests.
    Also, we cure our harvested garlic plants whole for at least two weeks prior to trimming and cleaning for long-term storage.
    Nice video. Thanks!

    I remembered this video from a couple of years ago and just thought to watch it again because I've had to pull my garlic oddly early as the stems have collapsed (slugs) and it was only then that I noticed I'd got leaf miners for the first time. My fault for not meshing them like I usually do. Anyway it all looks okay so I'll be freezing them, just means I can't trust any of the cloves to replant, I'll have to buy some new. Slightly worried about my shallots which are growing 2 feet away, they look ok though. Thanks for the tips!
