I was appalled when Shakespeare in Love won as well as Ms. Paltrow who is barely a cipher when it comes to calling herself an actress. Blanchet's career since Elizabeth has been an interesting one displaying more depth and talent than Paltrow who spends her time pushing Goop--whatever that is. Even Dench appeared somewhat embarrassed by her win. Fortunately we won't have Harvey Weinstein to contend with but doubtless someone can fill his vacant shoes.

I remember wanting Saving Private Ryan to win or Life is Beautiful. I watched Saving Private Ryan with my husband this past Christmas and cried all over again throughout the movie. I knew Life is Beautiful wouldn't win Best Picture but I was so happy seeing Roberto jump on the chairs to get his Oscar. Yet I cannot think of any movie he's done since then?
Yes Shakespeare in Love is enjoyable, I'm a sucker for period dramas and it has a beautiful musical score but Paltrow is not a great actress. I saw it in theaters because my mom took me but she took me to see Elizabeth as well. I just cannot say she's an Oscar worthy actress when she won. I almost felt the same way about Jennifer Lawrence but think she's way better than Paltrow. I can think of only two roles that I thought she was great in and it is hard to say if she was playing herself "Two Lovers" and "Country Strong".
The most distracting part of the film is I didn't like her English accent in Emma and it didn't improve for this role. I think Fiennes was excellent and the rest of the cast. Ben Affleck was so out of place in that film, as if he was dropped into the movie to get the Teens to watch it. Also maybe because I love Pride and Prejudice 95 seeing Firth as the baddy didn't make sense. I was 15 but was completely confused, "pick the sexier one who is rich lady, not the poor skinny poet".

I was hosting an Oscars party that night in my little duplex, mostly full of people who loved the live theater experience. Stage actors, directors, writers, and audiences crowded onto my couch and chairs and floor. The room positively erupted in happiness when Shakespeare in Love won. We knew that many people would think it was an 'upset,' but in that moment all we cared about was that our favorite movie was getting the ultimate in historical recognition.
More than 20 years later I still enjoy the hell out of SiL, usually about once per year. Saving Private Ryan is well made, but I've seen it...maybe three times total? It just doesn't have the same rewatch value.
Yes, a lot of our love for SiL has to do with a personal connection to the subject matter (which clearly was also a HUGE part of why it won at SAG and the Oscars), but a lot of the talk that night in my duplex was about a drama vs comedy setup and how the Academy so rarely awards comedies. A quick poll of attendees would have likely held up Billy Wilder's The Apartment as one of our collective favorite Best Picture winners of all time. Obviously, everybody is more than free to have their own opinion on the matter, but I'm still pretty glad to have another Best Picture winner on the list that is really watchable, funny, emotional, and crowd-pleasing.
Only the post-Oscars backlash suggests Shakespeare in Love is anything but that in and of itself.
I will not defend Weinstein as a human being.

Well the 1999 race was the most competitive it seems of all times. I have seen SPR (though long ago), Truman Show and SIL. And all were great. And there were movies like Elizabeth and Thin Red Line and Beautiful Life. All of them so well reviewed. 1999 was the toughest year it seems.

    • @brajeshsingh2391
      @brajeshsingh2391 Před rokem

Well I had seen SPR a long time back but only recently watched Shakespeare in Love. After watching Shakespeare in Love I more or less concluded that it was worthy of Best Picture, though my memory of SPR is too faint to allow me to reach a complete and well defined opinion.
I had hoped I would re-watch SPR to give my definitive opinion on the upset as it is called. But that opinion would remain "private" if and when I make it. So for the public record Shakespeare in Love remains the fair winner.
Also I remember had applied to Jadavpur University in Kolkata for the English Honors course. And in the entrance test, there was an essay on Shakespeare in Love. But not on Saving Private Ryan. And Jadavpur University's English Department is or at least was considered one of the best in the country at that time. So if they thought Shakespeare in Love was a movie worth writing an essay on and Saving Private Ryan wasn't, then sorry Spielberg and Hanks, you have to admit you did not deserve that Oscar.
That entrance test was also one of the most intimidating tests of my life. Firstly with questions like writing an Essay on movie Shakespeare in Love which I had no idea whatsoever about. And secondly in that test, I think out of 70 or 80 candidates, I was one of only 2 male applicants. Rest were all females. Why did the English department select me to appear on that test is still a mystery. Did only 2 males applied to the course that year.
I was so embarrassed about sitting in that test. I do not even remember what I wrote and just finished the paper as soon as possible and left.

Reason 1 actually sounds quite unconvincing. Summer or fall, Harvey Weinstein would have prevailed. If you dig out the oral history of the Shakespeare In Love campaign... you'd know why. There were amazing films like Hacksaw Ridge, 1917, The Tin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan, The Imitation Game... but really how many films with World War I or II subject matter should receive BP? Academy honored many of them in the past when it was really necessary.
Trueman Show could have been a very interesting pick back then.

I completely agree. Those who say it was all in the first 20 minutes just don't get it.
The story delves into the brothership of soldiers during war, ptsd, the desensitisation of violence amongst soldiers at war, the ethical question of risking 8 lives for one, watching one of your brothers take his last breath after he screams for his mother, the green soldier wanting to do the "right" thing by the book, and learning the hard way that it isn't always the best way. Having a mental breakdown in battle that immobimizes you helpless. A young private who owes his life to the sacrifice of men and lived his life to "earn this".
ALL of these themes were intertwined throughout the movie AFTER the Normandy scene. If you can't see that, then you just don't get it.
The other movies were great, it was a rough year to pick one, but nothing was comparable to Saving Private Ryan IMHO.

Between the two, Saving Private Ryan should have won. But since Spielberg isn’t so obsessed with getting Academy Awards as Harvey Weinstein, his film losing to Shakespeare in Love isn’t too surprising. The Thin Red Line is an excellent film that doesn’t get much discussion regarding the Oscars, but I do think it should have won something. Maybe Adapted Screenplay or a technical award. While I personally like The Thin Red Line more than Saving Private Ryan, when it comes to awards, I think Saving Private Ryan deserved Best Director and Best Picture more than The Thin Red Line. Good video, but I think you're overselling the surprise. The precursors certainly suggested "Saving Private Ryan" should have been unbeatable, yet there was the unmistakable scent of something blowing in the wind with the Miramax campaign and "Shakespeare In Love's" victory wasn't exactly uncalled. Oddsmakers didn't have it far behind. In Vegas, SPR was something like -200 and SIL at +250. That isn't a gaping margin really, although it is comparable to "Crash" vs. "Brokeback Mountain".

Regarding Gwyneth Paltrow's Oscar I would like to mention that 1998 was her year because she had released 5 movies (Great Expectations, Sliding Doors, Hush, A Perfect Murder, Shakespeare in Love) and had become very popular by then and that may have also contributed to her win. But I think her performance was very good in Shakespeare in Love (one of my favourite romantic movies)!!
I still believe she deserved to win even though Cate Blanchet's performance in Elizabeth was very good too, but Blanchet won twice later on and could still win a third Oscar someday so I don't really mind that she didn't win that year. The same goes with Meryl Streep and let's face it there are not many people who know who Emily Watson and Fernanda Montenegro are (especially nowadays) or who have watched the movies they were nominated for, so I don't get why Paltrow still gets so much hate for her win... It was a fine performance and a fine win in my opinion.

Both movies were stunningly good. It's unfortunate that anyone had to choose between them. That, plus the fact that the reasons one film "wins" and others "lose" often have more to do with current bandwagons and subjective moods, makes this debate pointless. Shakespeare in Love was delightful and very clever. Saving Private Ryan was brutally "real" and powerful. Picking one over the other was like saying that apples are better than strawberries.... No they're not. It's just a matter of personal taste.

This years best picture nominees lacked in variety with 3 movies being set in WW2 and 2 being set in the Elizabethan era. I think Saving Private Ryan should have won and the other nominees should’ve been The Truman Show, American History X, Life is Beautiful and Shakespeare in Love.

Honestly, if the rest of Saving Private Ryan was equal to the first act (like Reason 4), and if Spielberg cut the bookends of the film, it would have probably won Best Picture and certainly would be a better film.
I was rooting for Elizabeth, myself. I was furious with the snubs of Michael Caine and Jane Horrocks for Little Voice that year. The fact that the only performance nominated from the movie was Brenda Blethyn's was ridiculous.

  • @myrrhis01
    @myrrhis01 Před 4 měsíci

The baffling part of Paltrow's win is that she was, to use modern parlance, "meh". She mugs, in what she must think is a charming manner, and when she doesn't know what to do with herself, she tilts her head, like a perplexed canine. That's basically her range. Then you have THE ENTIRE REST OF THE CAST, who do a wonderful job in bringing the stage to the screen, and deftly play all the little Shakespearean in-jokes ("A plague . . . on both your houses!") while also bridging the gap between Elizabethan manners and mannerisms and a modern audience. The costumes! Few period pieces are as careful with EVERYONE who is on screen, even the extras. On that point, SiL has a serious leg-up on Elizabeth, which took enormous liberties with the costuming, and the soundtrack. I nearly threw my (empty) water-bottle at the screen when they used Mozart's Requiem to score the final scene. Only off by 230 years and at least 2 major shifts in musical style. As a life-long Shakespeare lover this should be one of my favorite films. Because of her performance, I can only watch it with my finger poised over the fast-forward button.

Unfortunately, it is too late now to fix that horrible mistake, I wish they create a rule to PULL Oscars from bad winners such as Shakespeare in Love , and to re-announce alternate well deservers like Saving Private Ryan who played fairly and lost with honor against the DIRTY Harvey!!!

are you telling me Harvey Weinstein was so influential that his PR blitz could out do Spielberg and Universal Pictures.
I agree with the opinion here that Shakespeare in Love timely release at just the start of awards season, a better ensemble performance and it being a movie about arts and romance could have helped it to win but to conclude SPR was a better picture is mistaken. In fact the video says why SIL won but it does not say why SPR should have won. Simply saying SPR should have won is an error of judgement. You have to make a point as to why it deserved to win. Pulling down a competitor is not enough.
SIL had a unique story, great screenplay, great costume design, and a fantastic performance. All of the actors gave a great performance.

I think the most undeserving Oscar that Shakespeare in Love won is Best Original Score Musical/Comedy considering it beat out my 2 favorite animated films of 1998 The Prince of Egypt and Mulan. Shakespeare in Love’s score is schmalzy. The fact it beat out the best score from a non-Disney animated film The Prince of Egypt is stupid. Mulan’s score is also way better than Shakespeare in Love. I think that win is even more undeserving than Shakespeare in Love winning Best Picture and Gwyneth Paltrow’s win.

I've been following the Oscars since Ordinary People won in 1980 and I can say without hesitation that the 1999 Oscars are my least favourite, in fact, I despise them. The winners just made me roll my eyes. I disliked Life is Beautiful and especially it's egomaniac star Begnini - so hated his win. ANY of the other 4 would have been preferable to me. Nolte especially, I think, gave the performance of his career in Affliction. Dench knew she didn't deserve her Oscar - I would have much preferred Redgrave for Gods & Monsters. I was ok with Coburn winning for the aforementioned Affliction and for Best Actress, although she didn't have a chance, Fernanda Montenegro for Central Station who just made me weep in that movie. And if not her, Blanchett for Elizabeth. At least Spielberg won Director - the movie should've won instead. That cold blooded machine called Weinstein at the height of his abuse of power.

That year the Oscars were a complete shame, I still can't believe that the Academy allows itself to be influenced by ridiculous campaigns. Of all the Oscars that Shakespeare in love won, only deserved ONE and that Oscar is Best Costume design, you have to accept that the costumes are epic. The Academy should not be paying attention to these campaigns, they almost made the same mistake in 2019 when they favored Bohemian rhapsody and ignored great films like A star is born and The favorite, if Bohemian rhapsody won Best Picture it would surpass the shame of Shakespeare in love.

Especially the end where Hanks says to Damon “Earn this” - meaning earn the fact that he was the only one lucky enough to be left alive at the end of the film - ridiculous-it did not deserve the best picture award that year even with the opening sequence. I am glad it didn’t win the best picture Oscar.

I am sooooo happy someone finally made a video about this injustice. I was a teenager when I saw Saving Private Ryan. I walked out of that theater with an unshakable respect for my grandparents generation - the hell they went through in WWII. They were drafted and they went into the service head held high. I’d seen war movies before, but in this movie it felt like Spielberg actually puts the viewer into the war to follow along. The shocking D-Day sequence seemed as close as a filmmaker could come to the real, brutal, mass slaughter that Omaha Beach was. And our soldiers, rather then turning around kept charging on. D-Day wasn’t just one day - it was the first day of many long hellish days & nights in constant fear of death for the members of the Greatest Generation. This movie HAD TO WIN BEST PICTURE I THOUGHT as I left the theater….
But that bloated, self centered criminal named Harvey Weinstein paid his bribes well, and took the most coveted award away from the film that delivered the best….How is Jail Harvey???

I don't care at all about what happened behind the curtains...the TRUTH, and only TRUTH is that the movie of the Zionist got 10 ok first minutes followed by 2 unbearable BORING hours.
In the other hand, Shakespeare in Love, is witty, fresh, and FUNNY from minute one till the credits. Exuberant, Intelligent script. Layer after layer of different possible interpretations. A brilliant and intelligent, let's say, parody of Hollywood itself, and a passionate ode to the Art of entretaiment. Being pure Art itself. And, yes, Judi Dench may appear 8 minutes on screen, but OH MY GOSH what 8 minutes!!! By the way, nobody said a word about Brando appearing less than 10 minutes in Apocalypse Now back in 1979...
A final point, the best actor Oscar should go to Jim Carrey. It was disrespectful not do it. The Academy got a big debt to pay.

I adore Shakespeare in Love, and will defend its Best Picture win (and all other wins, except Paltrow's) to the death. The film has a great ensemble cast, a clever and funny script, a sound plot and ending that made sense, a lovely score, and familiar characters and themes to anyone who knows anything about Shakespeare or Tudor history. To me, Saving Private Ryan was just twenty opening minutes of noise and then snooze-ville.
Also, Gods and Monsters should have got more love that year.
