  • If a coil is energized with electric current, the resulting magnetic field will attract any nearby magnetic material. When properly switched an attracted projectile can gain high speed and exit through the coil much a pellet gun.

How about reversing the polarity at half way, rather than turning it off. Then you could use the second part of the coil to provide additional acceleration, assuming you can overcome the inductance.

Hi Greg, thanks for your question and thanks also for watching. Actually reversing the polarity will not help, on the contrary the projectile will be sucked in. When a iron rod approaches an energized coil the coil-magnetic filed and the induced magnetization of the rod helps to accelerate towards the coil. Upon reaching the center of the coil the net force on the iron becomes zero. Whether we reverse the polarity or not, after leaving the center it will be sucked in.

@@technologyforyou5976 I am perfectly prepared to believe you are right :) But am I incorrect in assuming that the domains in the projectile will become aligned with the original field as it is sucked in? If so, then I would have thought that changing the field to oppose them would have contributed to the motion.

@@gregreynolds5686 Hi Greg, Thanks for your question. As domains of the ferromagnet materials are aligned with the surrounding magnetic filed, this will behave the same way, entering the solenoid or leaving the solenoid. So the projectile will be sucked in whether exiting or entering. Reversing the polarity will rearrange the domain in accordance with the changed polarity.
