  • In this mini-series on the mudras of Buddhism, Himie introduces us to the Bhumisparsha Mudra, which is unique to the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni. Siddhartha Gautama was sitting under the Bodhi Tree, on the verge of enlightenment, when the deceiver spirit Mara challenged him to offer a witness. In response, the Buddha touched the very Earth with this mudra, summoning the earth spirit to repel Mara and his hordes. Afterwards, he would attain Nirvana and become the Buddha. Not only is this mudra unique to a specific point in the Buddha's life and his victory over illusion and death; in recent decades it has also been seen as a symbol of the ecological responsibilities of Buddhists.
Explore the diversity, beauty, and vibrancy of Buddhist art with Himeshika Samaradivakara, host of BDG's Buddhist Art Quick Takes. Each episode highlights a unique facet, piece, or theme drawn from the rich heritage of Buddhist art across 2,500 years and many different countries and cultures.

This was my favorite and the one I most deeply remembered learning from my time in college. A always wanted to remember how to spell it too. A wonderful moment is being captured in those artistic representations.

    About mara.
The bhumisparsha mudra symbolizes Buddha's calling of the Earth to witness his purity and chastity despite the temptations of Mara
