- To prepare for the next leg of my journey, I take the Jeep to OK4WD, in Stewartsville, New Jersey, for some long-awaited modifications. First, they restore four-wheel drive by installing a new driveshaft. Followed by a winch, an air compressor, and some driving lights. Next week, a new chapter begins as I continue north!
I made it to the meet and greet at OK4WD! His weekly videos are addictive. I wanted to personally thank him for his work and offer encouragement.
Hugh Farley it was awesome! Such a good guy.
Vincent Gallagher I couldn't agree more. The world could use a few more people like Chris.
Chris lots of fixes, repairs, and new equipment. You should be in great shape now for whatever comes your way...
Stay safe
OMG! That line you followed on the rock pile and looked like you were about to roll passenger side caused me to almost have an involuntary BM! Anyway, glad you had your Jeep serviced and modified. Chris, the mechanic, deserves kudos for the care he put into your Jeep. I love mechanics who care about the vehicles they work on. Organization is a huge part of overland camping and I love it. There's always another product out there that can offer improvement but even $4.88 milk crates (stackable) from Walmart are great if you're on a tight budget.
The much needed new gear looks great, safe travels Chris, catch you next week!
👍One of the best Overlanding YT channels. I like your attitude. All the best from Bavaria.
Also a recovery blanket dampens the kinetic forces of cable or rope not pull it down. You are doing great. I have just been doing this for 30 plus years. Your videos are awesome keep it up.
Simon Elenor there wasn’t synthetic line 30 years ago.
@@kleinbiker1 synthetic line still has kinetic energy. I wont use it as it breaks too often. Also I said I have been doing this which means four wheeling and overlanding. I was not talking about synthetic rope. As I said and I quote kinetic forces of cable and rope. Also synthetic winch rope had been around since 1996 so 23 years. That's pretty close. I am not sure how your comment applys. As I learn as I go.
What a great shop! I may have to visit. It will be like an all new Jeep! I will be following your next adventure!
Bert Garrison it looks like my kind of candy store
Keep them coming brother! I especially enjoy watching you add these types of modifications to your Jeep.
Awesome improvements. Well done.
You might think about putting the winch controller in the cab where you can get to it whenever you need it. There are times when it is needed, but you can’t get to it in the back. Just a thought.
Alright Chris, i´m all caught up now. I spent the last couple of months watching all of your videos and i now have yours as my new favourite youtube-channel. Really loved this one and can´t wait for the upcoming ones. Hope you get stuck soon :)
I'm glad you have a winch and other new recovery gear now. I've been worried you would get stranded.
Relieved to see the winch controller in a more accessible spot. I keep mine under the driver's seat with a soft shackle. Imagine being stuck in the mud or at a steep incline and not being able to get to the controller!
I keep mine in the glove compartment. Its called a remote and it works from 200 feet away. I'd never buy a strictly hard wired winch ever again.
My only concern with the winch would be that it blocks the air flow to the engine on hot days when you are driving for long period of time. Keep an eye out for your engine heat - hopefully it won't be an issue :)
Yair Haim I thought the same thing when I saw it. I chose to put mine inside the bumper. Pretty happy with the way it came out: czcams.com/video/Zl-ZFHknMFE/video.html
@@1111Overland Just watched your winch video very nice clean setup. Great looking Jeep. What tires are you considering running as an upgrade? I'm thinking of going Yokohama Geolander MT or Cooper STT Pro. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
@@truckerrickakamanowar Hi , which tires did you get?
@@Ferda1964 Havent made a decision yet. They will be 285/70r17 as I drive this Jeep 19k+ and dont want to pay a fortune in fuel lol. I will be doing this in March. I will let you know then if youd like. Cheers!
Great upgrades, however one is not needed. Synthetic winch cables do not store any energy. If they break, they fall flat in that spot. No need to weigh the line down to prevent backlash.
Happy trails!
usedguitarstring one thing he didn’t mention is those make great “warnings” for people to “see” the winch lines, like vests on a highway construction worker... though in 99% of the cases where he’s gonna use it.. he’ll be alone!
You are gonna love that ARB Twin compressor. Put one on my 4Runner a couple years back. Takes about 55 seconds to go from 20 psi to 35 on my KO2 33s. One drawback is the hose port is on top and can gather dust and stuff easily. Wits End makes a nice little plug that snaps in to prevent intrusion and blockage. Cheap insurance.
Great updates. Makes you more self sufficient on the trail.
Great video! I love seeing the excitement in you! Very fun to join in on the build and I appreciate the details you include about all the products. Thanks for the hard work that goes into these videos.
Once again you overcame it. I was wondering as if I still did not have a winch in the jeep. Now a compressor really got top. Again, congratulations on the beautiful video, the rich detail in the mechanics and the replacement of the bushings and the support of the shock absorber. Very good.
Amazon sells different sized cover bags for your winch. I bought one and am happy with it.
Awesome new video. Your editing skills are on point. Keep it up Chris. We are living vicariously through you.
Well done on the air compressor!
Also, wicked choice of Baja lights, I have the same!!! In the same orientation too. They’re a great temperature light.
Hmmm. I'll be interested to see if you get any overheating from the engine... that winch covers a lot of air intake. But it looks badass! Looking forward to seeing you on some more x rated trails!
Nice build, now you are able to go anywhere.......🇳🇱❤️🇺🇸✌️
Just watch your engine temps, that blocks a lot of the airflow into your radiator...
Yar Nunya no alternator can keep up with the amperage draw of a winch. He has dual batteries already, he’ll be fine.
That’s a nice winch. Only thing I’d worry about is cooling issues on hot days since it blocks the grille.
and now we know the winch has issues after the Montana snow storm, good info
Always looking forward to your videos Chris, they are just amazing!! Thanks for making them. Stay safe out there
I would suggest taking the context of that arb tire repair kit out of that box and putting them in a nice pouch. That box just takes up too much room in that cargo storage space, at least that's what I did, I freed up a good amount of space.
Love you videos. You have needed the winch and gear for a long time. It sure does take up a lot of room on that front bumper. Looking forward to next week. Sorry you didn’t get your son on camera. Take care
Chris, really enjoyed meeting you at OK4WD Thursday evening. It was great speaking with you about your adventures and your son. The pizza was a nice touch and thank you for doing a photo shoot with us while eating pizza. Classic! You met a lot of fans, we're the couple from Berks County and told you about our experience in Prescott, AZ at Bill's Pizza having the Kevin Bacon. Definitely a must repeat the next time we're in Arizona. Looking forward to your New England adventures. Nice update to the Jeep. Stay Safe and God Bless!
My adventure starts next week, Texas to Roswell then north into the San Jaun Mountains of Colorado then Moab Utah.
Hi Chris, so sorry I didn’t make it up to your meet & greet on Thursday due to the storms in the Morgantown area. Would have loved to talk to you. Home you do it again sometime. Safe travels north. Hope to see you soon.
All my best,
Bob
Michigan in the summer is amazing.....you should come here!
14:53 nice little wholesome moment lol
I like that you don’t abuse your Jeep. We have the same philosophy, to have a fun adventure without destroying the land or equipment.
We need a shop like this on the central coast of California...
Your baby should have about 140,000 miles on it by now? Still looking great!!!
Another great watch, I had the same issue with packing recovery kit. I put all the bits in the tyre repair kit into a soft pouch, this helped reduce it size by half and lower its weight.
Good thing about a Jeep (of which I know nothing) is it seems they can be worked on fairly easily. Maybe they need to be, but probably not for what they are put through. I don't like that under hood air compressor. Seems like it get too ho'. Wait. about 6:40 mark - NOOOOO, pre ground coffee?! I like that old 4X Chris is not too proud to read directions!! That says a lot about his work. Professional. That winch Hecho en Chine? Even Warn probably is. It block radiator, wonder if it hurt cooling. Anything named "Bubba" has to be good.
Another great video, cant wait to watch the rest of the New England exploration (being originally from VT). I would suggest keeping the winch controller underneath your driver seat (on the left side between the seat rail and your door), or another place as easily accessible. That way, when you need it the most, it accessible. Depending on the situation, you may not be able to open the back or un stow your gear.
Awesome, hope the equipment adds to Chris's adventures. Wondering why he doesn't have a set of max tracks or traction devices? Seems like snow wheeling and the mud episode down in Big Bend could have used them. Especially when there was nothing to winch to.
Oh boy, that was great! You timed that edit perfectly with you slipping off the jeep... Got a good laugh out of me from that one.
To be honest, I'm surprised your recovery gear is so cumbersome to access! When you want that gear, you're generally not in the best situation to begin with and want it pretty quick. Most people I've hit trails with use a quick access bag they can toss out the window to a spotter or onto some (semi) dry land before self recovering. Something to think about maybe?
Great way to finish a friday
Watching now!
Great video Chris! Those soft shackles look great, will have to pick those up. BubbaRope looks like some good stuff. I will check them out. Thanks for taking time to explain how all that recovery gear works. I appreciate it!
Was thinking toss the old chair and get the new one . New chair p+ bubba rope= more room. But you didn’t. The compressor under the hood- saved space there !
Felt like Christmas ! 🎅🏼🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Your videos are awesome. And oddly calming. Keep it up man.
Awesome upgrades to the Jeep . Thanks for a great video showing most of the install and the quandary of what NOT to spend money on . Hope to see you in Pigeon Forge in Aug. for the Jeep Invasion .
I like that bubba rope. Gonna have to look into that. Thanks for the video.
The folder up chairs look like a good product. The soft shackles are good too. I've already flung a few D shackles from snatch straps breaking. It pays to replace your gear before it gets old and damages a vehicle or bystander.
Great job, Great toy... also, Chris, I noticed on one of the 4X4 shows I think you showed... had a pop-up camper on a rig and there was a long bungee type cord running horizontally around the tent portion about halfway up the canvas on the outside for the purpose of pulling in the tent when you collapse the top for travel so you don't have to push it in with your arms before bringing down the top portion. Perhaps you could add a Bungie to yours for the same purpose!
No one should ever use a bow shackle between two recovery straps. Bow shackles are best suited to connect the tow strap to the recovery point. You need two recovery blankets, one at one car and one at the other.
yewww another great episode, been watching for awhile and look forward to each upload!
Its about time you got a winch, I wouldn't think about going off-road alone without one.
I would highly suggest an external box for your Jeep such as an aluminess box to store your recovery gear and tools. I am a strong believer in that things like recovery gear is emergency equipment and should be easily accessible along with tools to repair your vehicle to complete your mission whatever that may be. Just like your spare tire I think an external trash bag is ingenious even though it is covering your spare that you may need to get to one day but that bag is all I would put onto it
Soft shackles should be a part of your recovery gear. Especially if they’re free.
Casey D I need to get some.
Recovery gear should be easily accessible. Particularly the winch controller which should be in the cab and reachable from the driver’s seat. Experience will teach you that.
OkieMizzou yes and no. He’s gone for years without needing that winch at all... are you saying the backpack in the back isn’t sufficient?
@@1111Overland , He's never needed a winch before because he has always avoided situations where he might need one (which was smart because he didn't have a winch). Putting his recovery gear in a hatch under all of his other equipment just makes using it that much harder to get to. Let's say that he gets stuck in a long, muddy double track and needs to self recover. He'll have to unload everything in order to get to the gear. Messy at best and unnecessarily laborious. He doesn't do any real rock crawling so needing the winch controller handy probably won't be an issue either but we're talking best practices here. He's by himself 99.9% of the time. Why add a layer of complexity?
OkieMizzou VERY valid point. Where would you suggest he stores it? Space is a premium. I think under the passenger seat or even in front of it might be a good option.
@@1111Overland , I'd recommend having recovery gear in a soft duffle so that you can throw it up in the front passenger footwell. It all depends on how you use your vehicle. Easy access is the smart move regardless of how you use it. What if you come across someone else who has no recovery gear or winch and they need help? I sure wouldn't want to have to unload my entire vehicle just to get to my gear. You could be hooked up and done pulling them out in the time it would take to unpack.
Northbound!! Can't wait to see where you end up.
Excellent additions.
9:37 my father who was a well known ad man in Brazil referred to this condition as "acquisitive delirium", meaning, you don't need that specific item, but the marketing world, through either good product design, graphics, or any other form of appeal turns a person into a shopping maniac.
Now is ready for around the world trip!
Loved all the new gear and upgrades. One thing I noticed after adding winch is at low speeds my fan seems to run more, I'm guessing from the grill being blocked. Tell me if you notice the same problem. Can't wait for your next chapter.
Great video, and lets never forget our safety glasses!!
Great video Chris... love the winch
That's gonna be my birthday gift. A Winch
I love your new set up!!! So informative!
Keep an eye on your temperature gauge Chris...👌👍
First thought I had; winch is blocking a lot of air. More so when crawling around the trail. Hope it all works out.
Another awesome video. See what happens when two or more people named Chris get together?!? Thanks for the meet and greet. It was better than OK 👌
Great tips
Great info on new recovery gear. There's a video out in wich cable snaps going thru the cab of a Jeep injurying the driver. The driver had a shattered jaw. Safety is very important.
Tom Maples it was prob metal winch cable and not synthetic.
It's about time !
Great video Chris..
Very informative.
Thank you..
Looking good Chris. The Jeep is better than ever.
Bubba rope and soft shackles on my short list. Great video par usual.
Congrats, you've got new toyz...
Side 2: as a suggestion, you may want to consider adding a second battery. For use as a primary for the Compressor, Refrigerator and the Winch, plus anything else you may install in the future.
BTW, are you alright after slipping off the bumper?...
Safe Journeys and Enjoy... 🚙🚙🚙
Fire N Rosez I believe he already has a Genesis dual battery setup.
@@cdnjeepoverland my bad, I watch a lot of these folks, he's set for mud then...
Good one
You won’t have to worry about that synthetic rope becoming a projectile. That’s one advantage of synthetic. You shouldn’t even need a weight bag though it doesn’t hurt.
Chris, you're gonna need a trailer soon!
You're a cool guy love your videos. Safe travels🍻🤙
God bless you and your family brother you good 💪⭐️⭐️⭐️
coyote works has got those type of black boxes he reckons there good
Now that you’ve got all the cool equipment you need to go back to the south west.
Great vid! Sad to see the metal bumper go
Remember Colorado, when you had cooling problems, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
Please advise. I am thinking about getting one. What do you recommend?
I can't believe I got t the first view. Right place right time. Great job!!!
Believe it. Huge accomplishment. Congratulations.
Wow that's so awesome you are a true legend
Hazardbone. I'm a retired disabled limited mobility veteran. I look forward to these updates every week. Was that supposed to be sarcastic or petty? I thought this was an open minded community, all are welcome. I'm so sorry for you, please don't reply, I have no time for that.
@@Harleyglide03 please perish the thought you truly are a legend
Love that shop!
those ammo boxes have holes that will let in ran and stuff. I have seen more than one video about the ARB compressors burning out (don't know how durable). I just ordered a Viair compressor for my truck.
Just keep a eye on ur engine temps ur blocking alot grille there. Jeep looks good. Also if u want ur air compressor to last keep the engine running when airing the tires up to keep the voltage up.
I Wish I coulda made it to the meet and greet. I ended up working late and wouldn’t of made it in time. love the videos !
Truck81_Adventures I feel the same. I’m all the way out in Utah and couldn’t break away to make the trip back east. Hope everyone had a blast!
Bad tires ! Buy for example Cooper SST . Tires is the most imported things on the Jeep . You can put tons of gears in the Jeep but if you dont have reel tires you dont get anywhere ! I know. I have been driving Jeeps for over 40 years . All depense on the tires. You can have all kinds of engines and horsepowers but is dosent matter if you cant get in to the ground . Best regards from KM in Sweden :)
I’ve been enjoying your adventure. I live in the Littleton, NH area. I am familiar with camping and off-roading in the NEK. Add Mad River Coffee House and Hill Farmstead Brewery to your list of destinations.
Kevin Keohan check out episode V2-E7 to see the Mad River Coffee House. (Just after the 10-minute mark).
I’m not sure how you were able to get by without a winch for so long. You need to go back and pick up the maxtrax !!! Great set-up 👍
Looking good 👍👍🇨🇦
Can you please offer a link to that table that is attached to the inside of your tailgate. That is fabulous add-on that we would like to get. Thank you!!!
You don’t need the winch line dampener with synthetic rope.
I know that this comment is late to the party, but you don't need the recovery blanket anymore now that you have synthetic winch line. Synthetic line doesn't store energy, so when it breaks, it drops straight to the ground, unlike steel cable that stores all energy and can decapitate someone. More weight reduction!
You forgot the tree saver for recovery gear 😆
Chris Congratulations on the 30,000 Subs! Your Videos are Awesome!
