- A bit of culture, a dunking in the canal and a fallen tree! We had questions taking our narrowboat through Hillmorton Locks in Rugby and found some answers to the apparent random words on the lock gates. Join us on narrowboat One Day More as we head north through Rugby on the Oxford Canal.
Hello! If you are new here we are Caroline and Pete, and in 2021, after 10 years living in Texas, we sold up and moved back home to the UK to live full time aboard a 60ft narrowboat, One Day More, with our West Highland Terriers! Join us in our day to day life as we continuously cruise the canals and rivers of the UK. All of the ups, and the downs and everything in between!
If you would like to support our channel you can buy us a coffee or the westies some treats here www.buymeacoff.... All donations are put back into our channel, we are currently saving up for new audio equipment.

Your videos are wonderful. So many canal vloggers spend most of their video time with the camera pointed at them while they talk. Viewers don't get to see much of the canal (except as a rear view behind the talkers). Thanks for doing your commentary as voiceovers and letting us enjoy the forward views of the canal!
So good to hear you’re enjoying them Roger! I try and film and edit them as I would enjoy watching, and you’re right, one of the key things is being able to see the scenery and where you’re going. Thanks for watching 😊
Thanks for taking a lovely shot of our boat NB Narrow Escape.. loved being on that stretch of canal, so peaceful and quiet. Xx
Thanks for getting in touch Vicki and identifying your lovely boat with the perfect name! You’re right, it’s such a beautiful spot! 😊
I agree completely with Roger . Your videos have the right mix of the two of you and the boat and scenery. Thankyou.
That's so lovely to hear Brian, and always good to have confirmation that people are enjoying the format of the videos we are putting out. We tried to think about what we enjoy watching and include those elements 😊
What a beautiful cruise and the doglets soooooo cute. Bless them. Made my morning. Thank u so much. ❤
That’s so lovely to hear Trevor. It’s always good to know you’re enjoying the videos 😊
It seems like you have a lovely boating community. I suppose you will keep coming across the same people some of which will now be friends.
You have hit the nail on the head Jill, and we often stay it's what we love the most, and was most surprising about this new life! You make friends, and end up sharing drinks on the towpath or a local pub with people you have sometimes only just moored up with, and have so many connections that it cements the relationship. You may be close to each other geographically for a few days, weeks or sometimes even months, especially over winter, and then part and go your separate ways, and not be close again for two years! It's wonderful when you are not even sure where friends actually are and then you come across them quite by surprise, or see a Facebook post that they are near by, so you can just up and move! 😊
Love the poem! never heard that before 🥰 really makes you think how impressive the locks are and how much history is in them.
Really well put together and read 😊
Thanks guys! The full poem helps it all make sense doesn’t it. And we need to have Alex do our voiceovers every week. Far more pleasant than listening to me 😂
I've seen the carved writing in other vlogs but no one explained it as well as you did. I thought maybe they were random but instead they are altogether a poem. Alex read it beautifully. When anyone gets near Rugby I always hope they make it to Rugby Boats. I watch their sale videos sometimes and I love seeing Bumble! He's a great representative for the operation. ❤
Hi Dorothy! I was so happy to find that poem with a good explanation of how the Locklines came to be. I told Alex we should be using his voiceover services more often as he has a much better soothing tone than me! Rugby Boats is not actually in Rugby, which surprised me when we finally passed it. It’s in Nether Heyford on the Grand Union Canal and I do have some footage of us passing it somewhere. Sadly Bumble was nowhere to be seen. He’s the star of the show for us! We binge watched the boat tours on Rugby Boats when we were planning this new life 😊
@@onedaymoreaboard I look at the short boat tours and day dream. Bumble is a great helper on the tours. I assumed it was right in Rugby! ❤
We hired boats from Clifton Cruisers in 1986 and 1992, our 2nd and 7th cruises; nice to see they are still in business. And on Sept. 24, 1986, we moored almost exactly where you did at Barley Mow and Bridge 50! Enjoying your videos.
Lovely to hear you're enjoying the videos! We always love you sharing the details of your travels on the same stretches so long ago, with your meticulous journalling! We both lived in Rugby at different times before we met each other, and there is a roundabout with a Clifton Cruisers narrowboat in the middle of it to advertise the company, and we never thought that one day we would be living that life, after passing that roundabout so many times! 😊
Loved the vlog as always. I bet everybody counted your strides. I certainly did. I agree with the earlier comment about your outro song. I love it. Keep safe and well.
I was counting myself again, just to double check when I was editing the video Nigel! I love that we get so many lovely comments about our outro music. It's sort of become our theme tune and I can't imagine taking it away now, or removing the footage with Jasper, when we had 3 westies 😊
As ever your vlog (dogs) bring a smile to the dial - Nice readiing from Alex... Thanks Pete and Caroline..
Glad you enjoyed it Jeff! We need to have Alex do the voiceover every week. He’s far more calming than me 😂😊
Wow the birds in your video were singing their little hearts out.
Ewwwwwww yes the towpath can be wet, flooded and soggy, especially when had a lot of rain , all good this week plenty of ☀️☀️☀️☀️🌞🌞🌞 sun.
I found the material for your pressies, I brought some bounding wool at Hobbycraft this morning. On the last bit now.
Take care ❤ X X X
💋's to Hamish and Poppy X X X
I have binded the top and around the corner, I have the beginning of a blister so will stop for a bit X
They were so loud weren’t they Susan! The rain has been so crazy this year, it’s been so muddy but we are thankful for the sun and dry spells now, that have made some towpaths so much more user friendly, especially for Hamish who hates the mud! Looking forward to our surprise! 😊
Hi Pete and Caroline. Great video. You featured the Barley Mow at Newbold Tunnel. We did the Warwickshire Ring starting at Napton last October 2023. We stopped at the Barley Mow - great pub. Good luck. Howard and Sue
Hi Howard and Sue! How long did it take you to do the ring? We have done it but over a long period of time! But Napton will always remain one of our favourite spots for sure! 😊
@@onedaymoreaboard Hi Pete and Caroline. The ring took us 2 weeks, including travelling to the end of the Ashby and back. We tend to start cruising about 8 am and stop about 3 or 4 pm.
Finally catching up with vlogs now I have made my list of things I want to add to the boat 😂😂😂, mark might pack his bags 😅. Lovely vlog as always, you know how to make me chill ❤❤❤❤
The list is never ending! We still have things we wish we had known about at the start 😂
lovely Vvlog guys so nice and peaceful and the music was beautiful.....yeah tell Alex his reading was awesome./..have dobe this many years ago.. can't believe hubby says we did it 30 years ago.....OMG.............. I feel old all of a sudden.......I said 1992...... well close too..... I so want to do this again.... go travel to the uk for at least a year or two... get a narrowboat live on one for a year.... meet all the people I watch on utube...... maybe one day..... I just still feel inside when I was travelling around europe in my 20/30's.... lol....thanks guys for your lovely Vvlogs love watching you, can't wait for when you are with fran and Rich one of the first couples I started watching on utube many years ago, along with Well deck dairies.. Mark and Deborah..
Thanks so much Lyn! Fran and Rich were one of the first channels we watched too when we were planning this new life aboard, and it's wonderful that we are such good friends with them now. We watched Debbie and Mark too, but haven't met them in real life yet on our travels. I know what you mean when you start counting how many years ago something was, and find it was actually 30-40 years ago! We can highly recommend you trying the narrowboat experience once again! 😊
Very tranquil ride
That’s the perfect description! Thanks for watching 😊
Watching from HTX! 🇺🇸🤠
Hey Kelli!! Good to hear from you on here! How are you doing in those 100s? We don’t miss that at all 🥵
Lovely countryside. Lovely canal. Looks like the canal trust needs to come along and clean up along the canal.
Glad you enjoyed it Maria. Yes, there are quite a few areas that need some more looking after for sure, but it’s such a huge job with limited resources 😞
Yet another cracking vlog guy's, stay safe 🙏.
Thanks so much Billy! Always love your words of encouragement 😊
Going by the video, you guys had a great day, plus the weather was on your side. Beautiful scenery Its videos like this, makes me really think about going to england and renting a narrow boat for 2 weeks. Im going to have to do alot of research first. Thanks for a great video.
We can highly recommend it John! Watch as many narrowboat vlogs as you can and you will catch the bug. We see many many overseas visitors on our travels 😊
Hi, Thank you for the video. I was watching it this morning moored up in Bidford when I looked up at a passing narrowboat that looked just like yours! We are moored up next moor but one on Rainboat.
Hello neighbour, what a surprise! We were so thankful to come under the bridge and saw what we thought was a space at the moorings in that terrible wind this morning! Sorry we haven’t really been out and about as Pete went back to get the car and I’ve been buried deep in editing! 😊
Hello- yesterday i took my first sort of ‘narrowboat’ ride….we loaded on the Falkirk Wheel… headed up to the next lock, turned around and down again… hope that’s not all i ever get to do!
What a wonderful experience Ruth! We have only seen videos of the Falkirk Wheel, and wish that the Scottish and English canals network were connected so we could make that trip easily. My first (and only narrowboat experience before buying one!) trip was at Stoke Bruerne on the Grand Union Canal, on the trip boat Charlie, that took you up to the mouth of Blisworth Tunnel and back again! 😊
Love the poem
Us too Deborah! I was so glad I found it. It made sense of it all 😊
Lovely vlog, a tad wet though, but loved the B&W pics, they take you back to the olden days of those working boats all around the canals.
I welled up when Alex was reading that poem, so beautifully read! He should do audio books. Hope the crew got a few extra treats after those watery adventures❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it Eric! Black and whites of the old working boats really do take you back to that bygone era. Alex definitely has a far more soothing voice suited for voiceovers than either Pete or myself. He was happy to record the poem for me, and we said we should have him as guest voice over person every week 😂
@@onedaymoreaboard yes yes yes! That would be too good! ❤️💎❤️
We were talking to him the other day about doing a Q&A to celebrate our 3 years aboard in September, and having him on board as the guest question master! 😊
@@onedaymoreaboard bring it on, baby! 😎💎🏆
That was some beautiful scenery! Even in the summer it's still green where you're at. I laughed when Poppy fell in the water. She probably smelled like wet dog for awhile! Finally cooling down to the 80's in over a month! Now we need rain.
It really was Joyce! You’re welcome to some of our rain. We’ve had way too much this year already! We used to long for the days when the temperatures would fall to the 80s when we were in Texas! Yes, you’re right about Poppy smelling of wet dog with a bit of canal water fragrance thrown in for good luck! Thankfully she’s not one to fall in very often! 😊
1:00 After 22 years in the US Coast Guard, I promise you, after service on 4 ships and numerous rescue stations, I shan't step step on anything smaller than a Cruise ship. Unless, of course, it's a narrowboat travelling the canals within the UK. I truly enjoy your adventures.
Thank you so much! It’s so lovely to hear you enjoy the videos and following our adventures with so much of your own life on the water! We met a guy recently who had been in the British Navy for years and then a captain of cruises ships for many years after, until he retired and now lives on a narrowboat, and he said of all those experiences, being at the helm of a narrowboat on a windy day is certainly the biggest challenge he’s had! Thats was reassuring for us as it’s so hard to control when it’s windy! 😊
Another fabulous video to watch whilst eating my weeties - geez that’s a LOT of muddy towpaths and maybe a chain saw might be a good bit of kit to have, cheers Swanny
Glad you enjoyed it Swanny! A chain saw has been talked about many times to add to the tool supply on board!
HELLO BOTH GOOD TO SEE YA ON HERE
Hello to you too! Thanks for watching 😊
What are you yelling for?
@@musictube250 oh sorry i for got to take my caps off
Hello Pete and Caroline we have been busy last few weeks not on our boat. We have binge watched your last few. They are great so well edited and interesting. Hope to catch up with you all if you return north? ❤ Ruth and David
Good to hear you have enjoyed the binging! We are heading your way soon for winter on the Llangollen again, so let’s stay in touch so we can catch up again somewhere 😊
How charming and poetic that someone took the time to carve those lock gates! Alex read them beautifully.
I'm in Southern California and currently experiencing temperatures around 100˚-110˚F so I can't believe Pete is wearing layers of cold weather gear in August! And the muddy paths suggest the need for Wellies as well. That makes me wonder how much and how many types of clothing you have to keep in limited onboard storage facilities. Do you store seasonal things on shore somehow? How many changes of daily wear do you keep onboard? Do you have to go on shore for laundering? There must be a lot of planning required.
Seems narrow boating has a variety of ways to make your life a judicious and thoughtful one.
Good to know Poppy enjoys narrowboat videos as much as I do. ; >
Hi Rainey! Ugh those are the sort of temperatures we don't miss from from our time in Texas, when everyone was wishing for a few days of high 80s at least! This was actually filmed in May, and it has warmed up a little since then, and the tow paths have dried out a little. We've had so much more rain than usual this year, and its been far colder for much longer, but summer seems to have arrived finally! We have storage totes under the bed, where we rotate our seasonal clothes, and we keep our bulky winter coats under the seat of the dinette. It's surprising how much storage we have on board really, and we make the most of it! We have a small 4KG washing machine on board, and a drying rack to hang things to dry, but when we need to do bulky items like bedding and towels we find a launderette/washateria. I do take advantage of taking over laundry to use my mum's washing machine when I visit though! You're right, there is quite a bit of planning involved, only washing when we know we are heading to a water point to fill up, but it's all part of this wonderful adventure! 😊
@@onedaymoreaboard You share your lives so generously and it's wonderful to be able to have these vicarious experiences. Thanks for including us! I only hope we add something for you.
THEM BIRDS SOUND JUST GREAT
Don’t they! I have an app on my phone called Merlin that identifies bird calls and bird song which is fab! 😊
Hi guys. Can I ask what the song is that you end your flog with, I really like it. Keep up the great vlogs. They are really good.
Thanks for your kind words Nick, they mean a lot! The song at the end is Time On Our Side by Ten Towers. Here’s the full version on CZcams czcams.com/video/0MqqeXvnk78/video.htmlsi=21nNPSnHkYVRaZ20 😊
Hi Caroline, I have a Q for you: In German we have two handy words for slow and fast motion (as when you speeded up the footage of you opening the sluices at a lock) "Zeitlupe" (slow-) and "Zeitraffer" (fast-, as here), but "fast motion" doesn't sound right to me. What do you call it? Plus at 16:25 when you passed Russell & Helen - Poppy barks a polite "Hello" over to Helen, that dog is such an utter delight.
Hello Eckhart, Zeitraffer = time lapse (when filming)
@@gabrielecox365 Thanks!
Hello! Another thought provoking question or comment from you, thank you, we love them! My first thought was the phrase you are looking for is 'sped up'. That's what I say in my head at those points in the video, and I speed them up so they don't drag on and make the video way too long. Anyway, Professor Google tells me that in cinematography, the opposite of slow motion is indeed fast motion! So you were right! I actually studied German at school for 4 years, yet the only phrases that seem to be stuck in my head are 'Welche Farbe sind die Vorhänge?' and 'Wann beginnt die Vorstellung?'. Not that helpful really! Poppy is definitely a social butterfly, especially when she sees people she recognises! We call her our greeter on the boat, as she sits up the back welcoming everyone as they pass! 😊
@@onedaymoreaboard That made me LOL! The first question sounds theatrical - the answer would generally be "damask red", the second question is definitely theatrical, and it's usually 7.30pm, or 19.30, as we say here. Your school clearly had theatrical ambitions!
Obviously! Very useful if I ever get to Germany!
Beautiful scenery!!
It really is Ann! We have a new appreciation for the British countryside since we moved back from Texas. Thanks for watching 😊
Great video on channel keep up the great video thanks lee
Glad you enjoyed it Lee 😊
The cut looks full ...
We have had so much more rain than usual this year so levels have been higher. Thanks for watching 😊
Thank you for the wonderful video. I like it when you have a black and white shot. Reminds me of the day of my high school photo club. We only shot b/w due to the cost of film and development. These days it's nothing to just use color - would love to go back in time with a digital camera. (lol) Weather here, cool in the 70's to maybe 80. Had a huge front come though. A tornado just about 10 miles north of us. No damage but love it when the phone gives you a screaming alerts to one. Had been about 93F before the front came though. Hope the family / puppies and you are doing well. Take care - Spinner
You’re so welcome Spinner! Oh those screaming weather warnings from your phone we remember only too well from our time in Texas! We had a tornado come through our yard taking a neighbour’s trampoline with it but thankfully only minimal damage. Wouldn’t it be just wonderful to take a digital camera back in time and capture so many more images 😊
@@onedaymoreaboard Yes taking one back would be so much fun. Take a couple hundred pictures and let them look at them on the camera's screen. LOL Plus auto focus and such. They would be shocked !! But I had fond memories working in the dark room etc. Sadly that school was torn down 10 years ago. A school where my dad , aunts and uncles all went to high school. It and 5 of them are all gone now. Brand new public library in it's place. Take care - God Bless.
Happy memories for sure Spinner! At least it was a public library built in its place and not a strip mall of nail bars and mattress stores! 😊
Do you know where and how the football got its points. I imagine it was after it got picked up and carried. My husband was dotty about Rugby but never told me any story about pointed ends. He spent hours and hours watching it.
From my research, the first rugby balls were made of an inflated pig's bladder, encased in leather, so took on the shape of that, which was more of a plum shape. The shape has gradually flattened and elongated over the years as it has evolved, as it is an easier shape to run with. I learnt something new today too, thank you! 😊
@@onedaymoreaboard Thank you……it seems obvious now!
You passed a boat ‘ohm from home’ was it a hire boat ? Because we passed one (looked a bit like yours…. New ) at the weekend with the same name ! Or do boats have replica names ? Loved the video x
Lots of boat have the same name, but they also have a registration number. The most popular name of canal boats is “Kingfisher”.
Thanks Gail, glad you enjoyed it! Not sure if it was a hire boat or privately owned. It was on its way to the Electricka boat show as we saw it there too. And John is right, boats can have the same names, but all have different registration numbers. Kingfisher is the most popular name, but from our search, we are the only One Day More! 😊
❤
Thanks for watching Carrie 😊
Can you explain how having a car works?
That’s something I have wondered about too.😊
I have been tinkling that we should do a stand alone video explaining travelling with a car and a boat as it's a question we are often asked, and one that we wondered about when planning this new life aboard. Often, we move the boat and then go back and collect the car, either walking (if it's not too far) by bike (we have a folding bike on the boat) or by bus or train. Sometimes, if we have looked ahead and found close by parking, we will move the car ahead, but only if we know almost exactly where we will be mooring, as that's sometimes a bit of an uncertainty. The easiest way is when we have visitors and they offer to take us back to our car. We always take them up own that offer. Also, it is much easier when you are travelling with friends who also have a vehicle. I'm not sure if you were watching us when we spent a few months traveling with Paul and Anthony from CZcams channel Narrowboat Life Unlocked, but we would drive each other back and ahead to move one of the vehicles. Still a lot of planning, but much easier. We use google maps to zoom in on areas close to the canal and can see where there are lay-bys, often by canal bridges, to park the car. It's a little harder when we are moving through towns and cities, but we find cheap pay and display car parks. It's an incovenience, but it's worth it for the convenience, and it's still a necessity for us having easy access to a car for Pete's job and to get to family easily wherever we are. Hope this helps!
Hello! See my answer to Rangergoal for a little explanation 😊
3:00 what is the name of the map book you are using?
We use the Collins Nicholson Guides when we are cruising. This one is book 3 but there is a whole set. Birmingham and the Heart of England: For everyone with an interest in Britain’s canals and rivers (Collins Nicholson Waterways Guides) amzn.eu/d/eimNfaC
