    absolutely in love and very jealous. I drive a 1998 QX4 and it has never failed me once. I have had so many good memories in it and the amount of girls that have seen the backseat....yea I'll just leave it at that. Still my daily driver at 214,000 miles.

And do you know what are some other options that look this good :) I’m going for steelies with some all terrain tires I have no lift or anything it’s completely stock what do you recommend. Thank you in advance

    • @mjotrainbrain6167
      @mjotrainbrain6167  Před 6 lety

      The rims I linked in the video description will fit! I'm not sure what the bolt pattern is in inches, but I know in inches it's 6x5.5 I would say any name brand all terrain would be good, but if you have the money I've really like my BFG KO2's! Also, the biggest tire you can fit stock without trimming would have to be no more than 31" tall.

  • @RobboElRobbo
    @RobboElRobbo Před 6 lety +14

    Hey, really appreciate the video. I've been looking into doing a similar build. QX4's are very affordable in my area. Do you regret not going with a typical 4runner or jeep?

    • @mjotrainbrain6167
      @mjotrainbrain6167  Před 6 lety +11

      Glad you like the video! I honestly don't. Compared to a 4Runner, there are very little differences unless you want to do a more extreme build (which is where the advantage of a real frame will come in), and I believe that the luxury/daily driver features that you have to give up for a Jeep aren't worth it (unless you get something like a Grand Cherokee, but those don't have the legendary reliability of these Nissan rigs). The only thing I don't like about my QX4 is the rust, which has made me consider selling it and buying an Xterra, but I've decided instead to fix it, because I'll be happier in the long run! Hope that answers your question, good luck moving forward!

    • @mjotrainbrain6167
      @mjotrainbrain6167  Před 4 lety

      Sorry for the late reply! Sorry that you lost all your toys, that's rough! Most Nissan trucks have "undesirable" IFS (most have McPherson struts or torsion bars) but it's totally workable and they'll wheel just as well as other IFS rigs, you're just not gonna have the option of a sweet setup like a late model Toyota with long travel. If you can find one that isn't rusted a first or second gen Pathfinder or Xterra can make a great rig platform.

What offset are you running -19mm or 0mm? I’ve been looking at 16’s but they all have 4inch back spacing and from my research it lead me to believe only 16’s clear the brakes so I’d rather go with the 15x8 that you have but I’d hate to buy them and they not work.

  • @gregcromer8406
    @gregcromer8406 Před 5 lety +1

    Very nice! I was wondering where you purchased the running boards? My oem ones rusted away years ago. I recommend to everyone that they remove them before your rocker panels get destroyed. The rust metastasizes and spreads to the panels quickly. Then, moves into the rear door jamb as you demonstrated in the video, and also into the wheel wells. For some strange reason, the driver's side rusts worse than the passenger on these vehicles very consistently.

    • @mjotrainbrain6167
      @mjotrainbrain6167  Před 5 lety +1

      I believe I ordered them on Amazon but I don't remember exactly, it was about 3 years ago. They are made by Westin. Absolutely important to replace rusty parts ASAP! It is interesting that the driver's side rusts quicker isn't it? If anything I would expect the passenger side since it's on the side of the road that may not be plowed as well.

    • @gregcromer8406
      @gregcromer8406 Před 5 lety +1

      @@mjotrainbrain6167 Yes, I have studied my vehicle closely over the years (purchased off showroom floor in 2001). My conclusion is that the water runs off the vehicle more on the driver's side than passenger. It is a strange phenomenon. Perhaps the weight of the vehicle favors the driver's side ever so slightly, and the water follows that lesser resistance? After you wash it, immediately open all four doors, and see if more water has collected in the driver's side door jambs. Use dry rags to wipe down each side individually. I bet the rag on the driver's side is more moist than passenger. The gas filler line rusts out as well. Mine occurred after the safety consumer recall. Also, be prepared to replace a couple of solenoids (the swirl valve) for certain. Order it through the dealer, and do it yourself. The dealer will gouge you severely, and average joe mechanics will have to go through the dealer for the part too, and charge you to figure out where it is located. (It is below the engine cover on the front. You can slightly bend the bracket to remove/install, and just requires a screw driver). I replaced the front struts and springs last year, and am getting ready to replace all the rear suspension parts through Rock Auto). I've done other work, but will spare the details as I am running long.

      @@bpd1969mag Sorry for the late reply, but yes. In the rear it stuffed into the fender pretty good when flexing, although ~2" extension on the bump stops with a body lift spacer and longer bolt would have solved that. In the front I don't know how clearance would be on the stock bumper since I upgraded the bumper before getting the tires, however I did also have to trim some metal off the lower back corner of the fenders to allow for turning.

I would have liked to swap to the 4.636 gears at some point, but for the small difference it would make I didn't feel that it was particularly worth all the effort. A rivet would have been a great idea for the CB mic, should have done that.

      Thank you! Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. Mine had the 17" wheels as well, I liked them but the chrome was coming off and they wouldn't work with tires as big as I wanted without using wheel spacers, which I am not a fan of. Without wheel spacers the biggest tire you can fit is 31" tall (any bigger and it will hit the strut so the wheel won't go on all the way), which should fit on stock suspension with very little rubbing, they may not even rub at all.

      It basically depends on the specific wheel; some will barely fit, some won't. Unfortunately test fitting is the best option. As a couple words of advice, steel wheels have a better chance of fitting than aluminum since the material is thinner. Also, make sure you get ones with a big enough center bore to fit over the hub (I believe it's 100mm for Nissan).

    • @mjotrainbrain6167

      I would definitely say it is reliable. These have been known to clock a quarter million bikes no problem. Mine's at 147k and I'm about to spend a lot of money fixing rust, and I'm not worried about that because I know mine is reliable; I've had it for 25k miles and know how it's supposed to be. However like any old car, they can have issues. The biggest thing I'd look out for is structural rust, and evidence that it has been taken care of. At that many miles it should definitely have had plugs replaced as well as a handful of other regular service things. Listen for lifter ticking when you start it and ask about oil leakage, as the rear main seal has a tendency to go out. Check out info on all the online resources such as NPORA and NicoClub. Hope that helps!

      Hey You At that mileage it's also almost certainly going to need a lot of suspension stuff, particularly bushings, done at some point. If you're handy the helpful guides on the forums should get ya through the jobs. Otherwise that may be something to factor in. (Struts, ball joints, trailing arm bushings, etc.). I've got almost all new suspension on mine, and other than the rust, you'd never know it has over 50k miles.

      Get it. I have a 1999.5 4x4 Pathfinder n I'm at 240,000 miles. N ir still runs like a champ. I want to lift it. But 2 8nches seem not enough for me at the moment. I have the suspension kinda stick. Have 2 in spacers o front. N some heavy duty shocks in the back. Dont do much off roading. It's my daily driver n my rig fir the mountain since I snowboard n also do some downhill mountain biking.. but if I ever do want that 2 inch lift I'll be back asking some questions bro. Great VIDEO

      The 4x4 system seems pretty bullet proof, both with the electronically actuated transfer case and the old school manual one. Oil consumption can be an issue, as can leaks. Overall it's a common theme among all Nissan VQ engines, and from what I've seen maintenance and miles don't seem to make much of a difference. Either you'll get one that goes through oil or you'll get one that doesn't. That and a couple other little things (PCV valve gasket and power valve screws; google those) are the only major issues I am aware of.
