0:00 Did you know that in Project Zomboid, the Veteran is one of the best gun-wielding combat occupations and will never panic no matter what.
0:07 The cost to be a veteran is the highest in the game partly due to the unique trait you get from it.
0:11 War has made the veteran Desensitized, meaning you never get panicked, ever.
0:15 Panic affects the aim, damage and critical chance of any weapon, be it firearms or melee weapons.
0:18 As a veteran, You'll never slow down when reloading or aiming, so you won't need to chug bottles of beta blockers when dealing with swarms of the undead.
0:25 The skill boost you get with aiming and reloading can help you clear out an entire town, so long as you have the ammo for it.

Small additional fact about the veteran: occasionally in the middle of the night you wake up panicked, presumably because of some kind of PTSD or combat trauma
Oh, it also happens in game too!
God... DAMN, it caught me off guard.

Sometimes the cat gets launched across the room and the mattress flipped while there's yelling about suppressing that fucker in the field. In game this is represented by a sad face in the status bar.
It actually happens to all characters I think it's supposed to be a nightmare.
Well played lol

Optimist: "we're in a target rich environment."
@Jacob King actually I just wrote that without reading any other comments at all. I love how people like you think every comment and how people think must be unique, and people don't ever have similar thoughts or comments. It must be "stolen" lol

Flawless inclusion of Fortunate Son as well

That's to my knowledge the only way the veteran can panic and it makes too much sense
it does say that night terrors still affect the veteran making this a bit too accurate
Yeah I'm playing veteran right now and I woke up in the middle of the night panicking and anxious. Coincidentally I spent the previous day bathing myself in blood and guts trying to kill a zombie horde near my home with nothing but an axe. It was brutal.

PTSD: allow me to introduce myself
Veteran seems like it would be a great option for when Multiplayer drops - you would be able to use all your guns to draw zombies away from the resource-gathering site, and remain effective when the time comes to slip away when the horde inevitably descends upon your location and rendezvous back at HQ.
In Single-player people are (rather rightfully) adverse to shooting because of it attracting every zombie for miles around to your location. When you're alone, this is not so useful. But with friends, diversionary tactics become a lot more useful.
you can draw zombies, and people away
My plan is to be a fire officer with an axe, but otherwise do exactly the same thing.
When you have thousands of bullets, the sound is only all the better.
well park ranger did the job better to make the horde got stucked in the woods, so veteran is only usefull when you got a lot of ammo to kill an entire horde lol
well go ahead and try it out cause its out!!
*Veteran after suffering countless sleepless nights from PTSD realizes that it's zombie apocalypse now:*
"Heh heh... I think it's time for Jack... To let 'er rip!"

@@askamikaze3936 Lol imagine if u could actually find the Sands of Time in Project Zomboid(like in that one Persian movie)and just go back in time when u get bitten,or heck even BEFORE the zombie apocalypse and warn the world(or atleast ur close family and friends)about it. Man that would be so cool ngl lol
"We made it... We actually made it!"
"Son we just crossed the street."
Tbh panic has saved my life sometimes because my character has more self awareness than I do. He gets panicked and then I know theres a zombie. Helps at night and in woods.
Well, you see, some professions do require special talents even from player itself..
Just use cat eyes and outdoorsman dude:They each cost only 2 points and cat eyes gives a MASSIVE darkness resistance bonus lol(aswell as park ranger)
My most recent character is a Veteran and wow is Desensitized a damn good trait to have! I don't think most players realize just how badly being panicked can get you killed.
Counting one the settings and number of zombies. I would honestly trade Desensitized for Brave. Cost only 4 trait points were as to get Desensitized it requires pretty much 16. So you basically get 12 more points to play around with. Worse for Desensitized, characters become naturally less panic prone in the long run so the longer you play the less panic a character gets and faster they recover from panic states.
So when combined with say Brave it doesn't really take that long to get mostly immune to Panic, unless it's an insanely large horde. Which no one is going to bother fighting anyways without using tricks that would honestly make the panic state irrelevant.
In short, the Veteran Profession in my opinion is a huge waste of Trait Points. To be honest, in multiplayer however I see it as useful, if you just have a few friends act as dedicated soldiers, but solo play it's definitely one of the professions I wouldn't recommend people. There are far more useful professions, I would even suggest Nurse over Veteran.
@@Alte.Kameraden You gain extra skill levels in the job class, though. Not just desensitized.
Just playing devil’s advocate. I usually play an agoraphoic character with that skill trait that makes them much faster when running from zombies. Works well for me because I can’t see myself staying calm when a horde of zombies runs after me, even if my character can shoot straight, I’d still be incredibly panicked out of game. And I’ve never found a ton of magazines, maybe one or two for a gun I maybe have 20-40% of the time, so I’d never be able to shoot down a horde to begin with.
@@Norinia yes but aiming is one of the easiest skill to level, definitely with a shotgun. It's pretty much a worthless bonus as by lvl 3-4 your already going to be very effective with just about most firearms. You're far better off picking something like repairman for example because of the big boost to maintenance skill. Which is considerably harder to level, and is far more useful as all tools and melee weapons are effected by it.
So again, you're only really getting desensitized put of choosing veteran.
@Bender Bending Rodriguez Some mods unbalance the game and that's one of them. It makes the desensitized trait practically useless if you get that mod. Its like being able to get the lucky trait if you find a 4 leaf clover in game
beta blockers work just fine and you shouldn't melee 3 zombies at once anyway
Your vids made me buy the game. I died within minutes.

Veteran with Common Weapon and Ammo loot setting is peak zombie warfare
Literally Bill from L4D
Ok I haven’t played project zomboid but from the type of game it is, using a gun seems like a freaking death sentence so the veteran doesn’t look all that useful
The no panic is the more usefull feature
You can raise some serious hell as long as you don't get out of the car. That's how I claimed Rosewood all for myself... after a quick stop at the police station for some ammo that is.
Guns are only useful if you have a car.Roll up to the police station, blast open the door to the armory with a sledge and then use a shotgun to blow the lungs out of the Zed's chest until you're overwhelmed and/or out of ammo and then speed away. Throw a molotov at before ya leave and you made zombie gumbo. Now, you've concentrated most of the zombies towards one side of town. Loot the other side.
If you're running lucky or have modded the game to use Brita's (Which the devs consider a mod god enough to spotlight, but won't ever add it due to copyright) you'll find more ammo and guns on average which makes this strat even more viable. Bonus points if you run a mod that adds for Knox or fort Redstone which are full of zeds AND guns.
Aside from shoothing in cars, guns can be really useful when the shit is already too bad. Basically shotgun is a huge "all in" kind of weapon that can give you some breathing room in a critical situation. For example, you can clear a path to your car and thus give you a slim chance to bail out.
It's only death if you're careless. As Nurse has pointed out you can walk faster than most zombies so guns are a great way to get a big ol ball of zombies away from an area while also picking a few off in the process. At higher levels the guns can kill multiple zombies per shot.

Your veteran wouldn't happen to go by the names Jack, John or Boss would they?
Hahaha, I like that she’s wearing an eyepatch! That’s a charming addition to the ensemble ;p
Your videos keep getting recommended to me and single handle started me playing project zomboid again
you see, panic is probably the best thing to ever have removed, and its inclusion in the game is made to cause you to slow down or even stop entirely due to it, veteran is probably the easiest option for players who want the thrill of fighting, shooting and burning zombies for days on end, it may not be needed but by god does it help, i just wish more special perks were given to each profession, rather than just a skill boost to some, it makes each one so unique and speaks more than skill boosts do since they usually go unnoticed by most players sadly
i mean.. most professions kinda have a unique trait lol.

YOOO that travis scott sound effect was perfectly placed
The goofy punch sound at 0:09 brought me to tears.
I've got a trait loadout preset for all occupations, and my setup for the veteran occupation is the quintessential retired 11B infantry SSG or higher. Negative traits are overweight, high thirst, slow healer, prone to illness, sleepyhead, smoker, unlucky, and slow reader. Positive traits are Outdoorsman, first aider, runner, former scout, hunter, and strong. It makes for a very effective character for dunking on hordes of zombies, and I find it to be a pretty accurate real life representation.
Seems about right.
@Jacob King I feel like you've been waiting to say that to somebody. Unfortunately, nobody cares about your "Brilliant Commentary".
See, anyone can be clever and knock somebody else, you're not that intuitive or witty.
How to play veteran:
Step 1. Don't set zombie speed to "Sprinters"
Step 2. Find gun
Step 3. Profit
"can never get panicked"
Yeah I'm about to abuse some game mechanics
Honestly the -8 for veteran makes sense too as obviously becoming one will cause some mental and physical harm so I love that
The veteran panics when he wakes up from a nightmare. So he does panic from time to time.
