  • Join flower farmer and florist Georgie Newbery from Common Farm Flowers in Somerset as she creates a funeral wreath, inspired by those resting on the Queen’s coffin. Queen Elizabeth II has made a great gift to those who grow flowers, by proving that flowers cut fresh from the garden are the very best flowers to be used in a funeral wreath.
Inspired by the flowers on the Queen's coffin, Georgie creates a totally biodegradable wreath, with twigs and moss and flowers from her garden. For more on wreath making book a place on Georgie's coming up wreathing demos through the autumn and for Christmas.

Georgie, this has struck a beautiful chord for me at such a time of sadness and loss. I can’t thank you enough for inspiring me to get out and cut from my garden and take on the challenge of creating a funeral wreath in honour of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. I cut my flowers and foliage this morning before church and have left them drink all day. Later I will do my best to channel your insights and directions and will make my own wreath. It will go up to our church later today. Thank-you again for this wonderful suggestion. Action helps fully experience this moment in our collective history and I can’t think of a better way to do that than with flowers! 🌸🇨🇦

Good morning, First time coming across your channel on you tube and I was so delighted to see you make such a beautiful wreath, I loved the Queen so much. I have often wondered how you put fresh flowers into a twig base and you have certainly answered my question, just one more wee thought, when you place your materials into the moss do you make sure they are held steady too in the twig base as I didn't see you reel wire in your materials and im just wondering how they stay in place if not tied in? Many thanks so much for inspiring me. I have lots of twig bases made in my garden so will definitely have a go at this sometime.

This is a long one so please bear with me: gorgeous video and wreath, ur words so wise, and I can attest to the deep thoughtfulness that accompanies making a funerary wreath. I’m a beginning flower farmer and oddly, Claude Rains, the great actor, another great Brit! is buried not so far from my house, have driven past the small cemetery where he’s interred thousands of times but never stopped but this year thought, I’m going to visit his grave, say thank you for all the great characters u brought to life, so I made (a completely biodegradable, all flowers from my tiny farm!)funerary swag (my first)and placed it there, just me, an actor friend of mine, and Mr. Rains. He’s been dead 55 yrs., but I have watched his movies my whole life. No money involved, no living person saying “thats gorgeous!”, graves are profoundly silent. But in the cutting, the conditioning, the making, and the placing, wow, completely changed my relationship to…flowers, for the better. It’s a meditation on gratitude, humility, remembrance, and the ephemeral nature of all life. 30 stem challenge funerary wreath? YES PLEASE! Second, fully cognizant of the horrors of colonialism, I will say this about The Queen: her COVID address was incredible, I burst out crying bc so desperate to hear those words, in that calm and thoughtful way of hers, we were getting nothing like that here in the USA, and that’s putting it mildly and politely. Linked to all my friends, they also needed, so The Queen is all right in my book. Lastly, I heard then Prince Charles in the 1990’s!! on the tv decrying the EU licensing restrictions on ag and seed varieties ( shelf life, transportability, licenses so costly as to exclude the small heirloom farmer) he actually said he wld start a black market for heirloom seed varieties. He continued over the years his work on preserving and promoting “non commercial varieties,”save the trade of these precious wonderful varieties. So I have great hope for King Charles III! I hope I havent put my foot in it, bc I really have zero clue about monarchy and the ppl of England, but I thought then, 30 yrs ago, this guy is ok in my book!! Georgie, once again, another deeply moving and important video from you. Slow flowers, yes, also Deep flowers. Thank you.
