I can't express the joy this channel brings to me.
I second that!
I third it!
My all time favourite YT channel. Hands down 🧡
Same here 🌺
Agreed! We get to watch a master craftsman at work, and it's especially relaxing without annoying background music. The way PBS shows used to be!
I fourth or fifth that. What a fabulous antidote to the times we live in. Thank you.
"That stain's definitely gonna need to be treated with oxalic acid."
--- me, never having finished a piece of wood, but after watching Tom for years
That's great! Thanks
I said the exact same thing 😆
- I refinished a desk 17 years ago. I would do things COMPLETELY different now after watching these videos.
Midway in this video I realized that there was definitely going to be a part two, and my heart sank. But only for a second. Because that is the price we pay when we demand to be part of the whole process. The mixing of epoxy or detergents, the measuring, the clamping and unclamping, the sanding, and best of all, no fast forward. I also appreciate you telling us little secrets along the way, like the direction of side grains and showing us pictures in a book. It all contributes to a really enjoyable video, and I for one will wait patiently (🙄) like a good girl for the next one. And as usual, the editing is stellar. Thank you.
You are welcome! Yes, I hesitated to do 2 parters. But people want all the detail!
The animal bookends to the episode are always such an enjoyment.
Thanks! For me too!
"A frequently asked question is why dont I use power sanders" - then brings out the Mother of all sanders-LOL. Nice one Tom😁
Thanks! That's good - I have an even larger one!
@@johnsonrestoration You woodworkers...always bragging! Clamps,finishes,equipment...
If that was you, Chris, who replied to the "OR" above... thanks! ...Barry
Whenever we have to glue a small piece back in place, we now say that we need to “Thomas-Johnson it.” Watching your channel is such an education on gluing and clamping!
We do as well. Only we say, "We need to "T.J." it!"
Hahaha, we do this too, but I use my first name and his last name. I mean, afterall, I can't blame him for my glueing mishaps ;)
Thanks! That's a real compliment!
I like that! Thanks!
Thanks! It's ok if you want to blame me, I got you into this mess!
Just when I was wondering how to wind down on a lazy Saturday afternoon, I have the delight of watching another Thomas Johnson masterpiece. Cast back into an analog age, where fast-paced was walking a horse, relaxation was a sleeping dog in the sun, and true craft was hand tools, hide glue and clamps. And the lesson today; good things take time. So, I must now wait patiently for Part 2. Thank you Tom.
You are welcome! Well said!
I can realize all the effort that has to go into providing these great videos for us.
I want to thank you for that, and for the knowledge that you share, and for the inspiration.
You're very welcome! I appreciate it!
Bringing examples from the book was a great idea. I like these kind of things.😁
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
I can not express clearly enough my annoyance that due to "real life" obligations, I had to wait for an entire HOUR to watch my favourite artisan remove a dozen clamps from a table apron..................in the same vein, I can not express clearly enough the satisfaction I got from watching said artisan remove those clamps...........Mr. Thomas, you provide so much, on so many levels - I am not embarrassed to express my gratitude for your efforts and the resulting joy they bring. And now you enhance the experience by bringing anticipation into the game! Masterful, my friend, masterful.......................
On another note, in response to a comment left by another viewer, the time and effort devoted to the repair of an item that appeared to be in fair nick to start with is commensurate with the emotions of the owner of the piece...........they obviously cared enough for this piece to "Full SPEND ahead, and damn the Bank Balance"........
You just spoke from my heart 🥰💙
I'm going to retire early because work gets in the way of too many things!
Full spend ahead......... love it. Worth every penny
Thank you! I appreciate it! I love "full spend ahead!"
Thank you!
Will never understand how there could be any dislikes to these videos they are so enjoyable, educational, and informative. thank you for all of your hard work and attention to detail it is really appreciated.
You're welcome! I appreciate it. It's been explained to me that a lot of dislikes are bots
Your shop dog does a great job. Too much can never be said for moral support. Love your impeccable work.
Couldn't do it without her! Thanks
My dog also needs a boost to get in the car. She’s 17. ❤️
Wow! 17! Ella's 11, but actually she always needed a boost to get in the truck. It's just too high
So grateful to have this piece of tranquil craftsmanship today.
Thanks! That's nice
My wife and I sincerely love watching your videos. We can hardly wait for each new one. Thank you!
You're welcome! Glad you like them!
I have owned, sold, restored and loved hundreds of antiques but this old guy is my second favorite antique, my husband is my first! LOL
My life is a constant struggle with physical pain so I do everything I can to say off the heavy drugs I could be taking. Today, as in the past, I played his videos and fell asleep three times to pounding, sanding and his calm voice telling us what he is doing and why. I tried Native American flute music and new age pain relief music earlier and had to take a pill so.....yup, that happened today. The sounds from this video bring me back to days I loved to wake up to. Thanks again Tom!!!! Hugs from an antique (old) lady.
Thanks! I appreciate it! We eat "drunken raisins" everyday for pain relief. This is a real "thing". It works better for some than others, but worth a try www.verywellhealth.com/can-gin-soaked-raisins-help-arthritis-189147
Why do I like watching this guy repair and refinish furniture?
I don't know - but I'm happy about that! Thanks
Tom is providing an advanced course in furniture restoration on this oak table. Here I go again, but my Grammer had a parlor table she inherited along these lines that was so over the top in leg configuration and decorations wth cross braces, fluting, spindles rising out of center brace in multiple areas.. It was something to behold! She had it refinished. It never had it’s glory again. The patina and smoothness of the wood were gone. Looked like raw furniture you buy, then apply your favorite shade of varnish and call it good. This is how it should have been done.
Thanks! It's so hard to balance the need for refinishing and the loss of the patina and defects. I'm always trying, with varying degrees of success
Thank you for sharing. Your wealth of knowledge and experience is unsurpassed.
Best wishes from across the pond
You're welcome! And to you too!
I add my voice to the rest of the positive feedback. This is ZEN to my mind. No head-banging music intros; no loud, unexpected surprises. Just Tom being his cool-self, explaining what he's doing, or what he's missed. My next trip to Buxton and I will definitely stop in in person.
Thanks Dave! Yes, stop by!
thank you again for a break from the madness
You are very welcome!
@@johnsonrestoration keep up the good work
Although I am a Dutchman, I appreciate the videos with Tom, the dog and the chickens very much! Thank you Tom.
Thanks Arnold! Why would being a Dutchman make any difference! I'll have to ask my friend van Benten
@@johnsonrestoration Dutch isn't always the best begin in the combination of words in English
I expected this to end in a cliffhanger. The good thing is: patience will be rewarded.
Funny, I didn't expect one since he farmed out parts to the strippers. Thought it might go more quickly.
Right at the very end it was almost a “Cat-Hanger”
You know me too well! Thanks
Thanks! We have a ways to go!
I am grievously disappointed that for some reason my notifications didn't work for this one, but delighted to belatedly discover it on an otherwise dull Sunday evening...thanks Tom!
You're welcome! I wish the notifications worked better
After a stressful week I need to wind down - oh look Thomas has a new video out. Instant chill. 10 minutes into watching and sweating in what passes for tropical heat in the uk and Tom goes to get the table stripped and there’s snow on the ground. Instant chill. You sir are a master of mellowness, doing the work I’d love to be able to do and sharing it with us. Many thanks
You're so welcome!
Isn’t it gratifying to watch this man revive furniture???
Thank you! And it's gratifying to me that so many people watch!
Today, I am really happy that I learned a little more from a grandmaster. A big hug from Brazil.
Thank you! And a hug back to Brazil!
Roberto, A great big hug to all of you in Brazil going thru morbid times. We Hispanics love beautiful Brazil n ur fantastic music ( Roberto Carlos).
Now I understand what's been keeping you so busy while I'm patiently tapping my foot waiting for your next video. Skill and craftsmanship is a joy to behold.
Thanks! Yes, these big jobs get pretty involved, especially the editing etc
Tom! Dropping them words like chatoyance! Vocabulary and tips, another gem.
He snuck that in and there's no closed caption for me to find the spelling! LOL
Thanks! I love using that word whenever I get the chance!
Thanks! That's interesting
@@johnsonrestoration CZcams takes a while to produce 'automatic' captions
So much to learn, so little time .. but what an excellent teacher you are. Thank you.
You're very welcome!
This man has almost genius talent for restoring wood furniture. I love watching his meticulous work.
Thank you! I love that people watch!
Thomas I could watch you all day. I love your attention to detail. Magnificent.
Thank you!
Love these long-form, two-part videos that really show the whole process in detail. You do amazing work.
Glad you like them! I always worry about 2 parters
Wonderful video, as always! I love all the information (quarter sawn oak, how to match the grain, etc.) and I enjoyed seeing examples of other similar tables from the period. I will probably never restore a table, but that doesn’t diminish my enjoyment at watching a master craftsman do what he does best.
Thank you! That's nice
What a perfect way to spend my Sunday morning - watching Thomas Johnson doing his magic ! Thanks Tom for such great videos, your care and patience is truly amazing, and your voice is great too, explaining all the way through - a total education. Take care, and I can't wait for part two !
Thanks! Coming soon….
... and we'll all be right here to watch the next installment Thomas. Thanks.
You're welcome! Soon.....
Absolutely stunning video Tom. I look forward to the next instalment .
Thank you!
Watching mr TJ is better than going to church or a movie . Bc this is Real art. And enjoyed right from home.
Thank you! That's nice
Having binged so many hours of the videos on this channel and watched as time after time of Tom put together the literal pieces of broken furniture, I'm convinced given a little glue and some clamps Tom could have saved 2020
I like that! Thanks!
My wife and I are certainly enjoying your videos. She especially likes the opening and closing shots of animals..
Thanks! me too!
My wife and I just discovered this blog and are enjoying it due to our interest in antiques and wood working. This uh is very talented!!
Thank you!
Fantastic editing on this video! Loved the close up during the chiseling etc. You teach so much, especially what seems like the small things such as the grain on the side of the patch direction. I would have never considered that.
Thanks! I'm glad you're watching!
Mr Johnson, I can't sleep because of back spasms so when that happens you and I spend alot of time working in "your" shop. Thank you for filming as I so enjoy watching and picking up little habits that shine forth in the restoration process that we both have shared over the years. Thank you.
You're welcome! Think "spinal decompression" - google it. It cured all my back problems
Just great. You are someone you like to pay money for and who is worth every penny. So much dedication and paying attention to every detail. Unfortunately this has become very rare today. Thank you for your videos and the time you give us
You're welcome! I appreciate your kind words
Greetings again from Kenya. Another wonderful video. You are amazing to watch. Thanks
You're welcome!
I feel like I want to be the persom that Thomas Johnson and Mr Roger's believes I can be. Lol So much can be taken away in life lessons watching you. Thank you
You're welcome! We've often thought about doing an opening scene like Mr. Rogers
The absolute best furniture refinishing channel on CZcams and I have watched and subscribe to a ton of them. I have watched the TJAFR channel for 6+ years and the content, craftsmanship, and video quality is constantly improving; making this channel almost addictive. Another great video Tom!
Wow! Thank you! High praise! I appreciate it
Okay, whoa ,whoa WHOA .....Did I hear the word "chatoyance" ?!?!
Call me stunned and impressed Mr Johnson, dropping some woven word lace on us. Showing once again your sagacious eye in proper detail.
Thank you! I love that word! Chatoyance Chatoyance Chatoyance.....
What a pleasure to see a master craftsman at work. I particularly like your shop; it exudes experience.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful work Thomas , although obviously time consuming it must be very rewarding to bring tiered and used years old furniture back to its former glory! It’s certainly very very enjoyable to watch you do this amazing stuff I must admit thanks so much for sharing it with us 🙏👍
You're welcome! It is indeed very gratifying
Love seeing you do things the old way as I was taught. I was a Pattern Maker for my sins. Just so nice instead of machine tools. Hand tools👍👍
Thanks! I have always admired pattern makers, after working with them at Fort Belvoir in the early 70's
I greatly appreciate all of the thoughtful camera angles you set up. You take the time to show us what is happening underneath and around the piece you are working on. I have learned so much from watching your videos. Thank you!
You're welcome!
As soon as this restoration started I got the feeling it was easily going to be more than 2 or 3 parts. Love it and am learning a lot today about grain direction. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
You're welcome! I'm glad people don't mind 2 parters
It was like a good novel. Getting to the end, and it was the end until the next episode. Blast! Great educator and no nonsense step by step instructions. Love it. Keep safe and well and waiting in anticipation for the next one. 👍🏻🇦🇺😁
Thank you! Coming soon....
I love that he said 32 square feet (of hand sanding) then brought out the power sander. LOL! Tom is just GREAT!😀
Thank you! That's nice!
Thomas: I knew this restoration wouldn’t be a one time video. There was just too much work to do. Looking forward to the second video. Carol from California
Thanks! I hope people don't mind
I’m so glad there is another video to follow. Gives me something to look forward to.
Great! Thanks
It’s a great day when a new video shows up!
Thank you! That's nice
Haha, video was released less than a few minutes ago, and it already has 3 likes! That's a good sign for you, Master Johnson!
Thanks! I know, it always amazes me
Glad to have you back Thomas
Thanks! But I've put up about 10 videos this year, I've been here!
I wish there was a sweepstakes where the winner could have their antiques restored by Tom Johnson. 😀
Or a star trek mind meld where his knowledge and superb skill could be imparted to me. Lol I wish!
Not a bad idea for a contest! Maybe the Star Trek meld would be better
A very nice table made better by you! Love watching you fix these American treasures!
Thank you! Yes, what a great example of "Americana"
every time I watch, I learn something new. cheers
Thanks!
Wow! Clamps galore - my day is complete.
Of course! Thanks!
I can’t wait to see the finished table. Have a great week!
Thank you! You too! Coming soon!
It is a pleasure to watch you working , as a woodworker I know patience is a virtue and you need to take your time every step of the way to do any type of restoration. Most specially wood furniture. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome! And I appreciate it coming from another woodworker
Working with heart, explaining the complex simply, mastery in action. Thank you.

Love the video as always. Way better than mainstream media. The craftsmanship is always impeccable.. I do miss the hyde glue heating pot and the clanking of the canning jar mixing up the glue. I am thinking it finally went bad :( Thank you for all your hard work making these videos. I always learn something new...
Where and how do things go missing? That cast iron double pot for hide glue of my grandfather's. Someone sometime did away with it. Not me. Try find a good modern one.
Thanks! Yes, I've got to get the old one repaired
Thanks! They still make the same pot: www.woodcraft.com/products/hold-heet-electric-glue-pot-1-quart
Thank you for anther great video of know-how and craftsmanship, Mr. Johnson.
And I must compliment Ella on her courtesy. @ 9:15, as she's going to get into the cab, she thoughtfully looks over to se if there's anyone who wants to go ahead of her. And her thoughtfulness and concern when she comes into the shop to check on you, @ 27:34, just making sure you hadn't succumbed to chemical fumes or stepped on a nail. She's like your guardian angel--what a great dog.
You're welcome! And thanks! She is a great dog - an amazing companion
The animals at the end remind me of my favorite news show, “CBS Sunday Morning”. They show tranquil animal and nature scenes as the show fads to black. A little ASMR goes a long way!

You never cease to amaze me Tom. I can't wait to see how you add hight to the table. I found two abandon English Anglo-Indian Teak Arm Chairs. They also don't scoot up to the table. I love them so much. They'll end up with abandonment issues if they were tossed again! 🥺😄
If you are having table/chair height problems, as a quick fix consider castor cups: small, shallow cups of hardwood or brass (or ugly plastic!)traditionally placed under the table legs, to prevent floor damage from the castor wheel. They come in all heights from about 5 mm / 1/4" to 5 cm / 2", and they are very easy to install, as well as being traditional.
