The TOPS Brothers of Bushcraft (BOB) Fieldcraft knife is one of those things, where you take a proven design or concept, Americanize it, and it becomes awesome, like Tortilla chips, or the locomotive.
NOT a sponsored video, I've just really wanted to try this blade out since it was first introduced.
The Good:
- Modified scandi grind is much easier to maintain in the field than a traditional scandi grind
- Still shaved off hairs after the test, and with the polished blade, you can see the Hamon line on the blade.
- Traditional hand grip is comfortable
- Bow drill divots on either side for lefties or righties.
- Bullet separator and shango notch are cool additions.
- Chops well (with the assistance of a baton)
- Splits well
- Excels at carving tasks.....really.
The Bad:
- Shango notch is hard to master, careful with it or you will break your fire starter (voice of experience? yeah)
- Rattles SLIGHTLY in the sheath. Wish it came with a tensioning screw for the sheath to allow you to adjust the friction level.

Best review I've seen of this knife yet. I've already ordered a second one.
Great review. I've been using this knife for a while. The notch is difficult to use and using the tip of the blade (by the spine is easier) I may grind a small section of spine to make ferro rod use simpler. The ferro rod holder also fits a standard light my fire army model perfectly. Keep up the good work
Loved you review best one so far you were the only one to show the bullet separator. You got my sub
+Zackary Chadwick I will 2nd that! Great review Andy.
well just recieved my bob. i got th black and green handle. gorgeous. so far im very impressed withe knife i will put it through its paces come hunting season. will test thoroughly. and use to clean/gut deer.
I ditched the TOPS fire rod and replaced it with a standard LMF ARMY Swiss Fire Steel ... I paired the LMF ARMY WALNUT (Knob) HANDLE Swiss firesteel and IT FITS the TOPS BoB FieldCraft Sheath perfectly.
It certainly does. Thanks for the answer! Been looking for a new fixed blade for a while.
Clear easily understood and well filmed/ narrative. Thanks for sharing. All the best from Scotland. Garry
This is one of the better videos I seen with this knife
Looks really good. I like how its not a huge rambo style knife but still has a ton of features/usability. Great review. I'm surprised the powder burned as long as it did!!
Great review! I've been wanting to see how that bullet separator works and hasn't seen it anywhere until this video.
One of the best reviews of this knife. Great job.
Been anxiously awaiting this one! Can't wait to receive my BOB. Thanks Andy for the stellar review! Please keep them coming!
Excellent gunpowder extraction demo. Thanks!
Great review as always. Love that little extra bit about the bullet puller always good to learn new things.
GREAT review and I concur with your findings! It is definitely one of my favorite cutters ever.
that bullet trick was badass , ima keep some in my bag just for that in case i gotta make a fire stupid quick
Awesome video! I've been looking at this knife for a while and I just ordered it. Can't wait for it to arrive!
I like this knife. I think is the next one on my to get list! Im getting the Condor Alert that I wanted. I think the BOB knife will be a great addition since I usually like to have at least two knives. I always have a small folder or multi tool so that covers the small blade for little things or utility uses. I like how you do your reviews in the woods. Looking forward to more awesome knife reviews! Take care.
Nice video, very well spoken too. I have been thinking about buying that little knife myself. I think I just might. Keep enjoying the great out of doors bro.
Nice review definitely getting one
That scandi grind will definitely do the job! But yeah, that'd be real interesting if that contraption becomes a reality.
Great video! Love this blade!
It's a rock n roll blade. Lots of punch in a little package.
Ya it looks sweet I love having an all in one knife to take into the bush.
***** I bent mine in 4 days
Batoning firewood with myTOPS-B.O.B and now it is slightly bent..??
Building shelters splitting wood batoning..
OhhShit What did i do wrong, was i too hard on it.?
No more batoning i guess??
Unfortunately, this is not covered by the TOPS warranty.
TOPS Knives
Very good review! You’re awesome!
Just a little suggestion as well: I haven't seen anyone compare the ESEE 5 and the BOB and I'd love to see a side by side comparison of their performance. They're pretty similar knives besides blade thickness and price. Just a consideration.
Great another knife I want awesome review as always andy
Thanks, check out the Tahoma Field Knife I designed by TOPS too :)
A very nice knife. Still deciding if I`m going to take it or the Fallkniven F1.
Yeah ... 5.25 inches would have been ideal but this is STILL the most adequate all-around BC/Survival (One knife option) that I have come across. there are better two-blade systems ... Like pairing the BK9 or the Ontario SP8 with a Mora Black or one of the sturdier Bushcraft knives ... Condor Sapien or Spyderco or one of the sturdier Helles or a Bark River Gunnie or Aurora, ... F1 ... Another GREAT contender (IMO) is the BRISA/ENZO CAMPER (awesome D2). ... The BoB sheath ROCKS, though.
Awesome presentations Im on board pal
Nice video. What's the mini version called that was modeled off of this knife?
Cool vid bro
I had issues with my bob...My factory edge crumbled the first time I lightly used it...merely stripped a small dried oak log of its bark and the dark layer beneath the bark...about 15 minutes of slicing...After just that lil bit of use the edge was severely chipped and rolled where it wasn't chipped..Was really disappointed in the quality, and the worse part was I couldn't return it to the store bc it wasn't I resellable condition.
Being stuck with it I started the long process of fixing it. Got rid of the shallow and obtuse convexish secondary bevel, brought it to a true scandi and put a deeper more acute slightly convex secondary bevel on it..It's a much better carver now, thou I haven't batoned or chopped heavily with it yet...I'm hoping the edge will hold up this time.
You got a lemon, and yes you could have returned it even if you had to deal with Tops themselves.
Bullet fires are pretty bad ass!
Nice knife I think it should be a little longer but like everything else about it
Do they have a little large model. It is a nice knife. Nice video.
Us the knife hard to sharpen if you have sharpened it? i know tit the heat treat tops dose the edge retains really well and for a long period of time but if you have used it to the point were you sharpened it is it hard to sharpen? thank you, great video.
Get Some!
Looks like a very useful knife. I really enjoyed your review; you seem to put through the paces well. Still having an issue with the cost of the knife though. Wondering how well it compares to the ESEE 4 or 5?
can you field test the M.O.D 4 jungle survival knife ......i have one and after using it for awhile i get too liking it .....
Thanks man nice vids, I like that knife you ship to Greece?
hardcore music for cutting a 3 inch log
Slight convex, from the factory ... Easy to profile to either a true scandi OR a full convex ... Or ... Jut run it like it is. ... I am personally going to bastardize it with a slight secondary, using my DMT DIAFOLDs (Duofolds) ... But a strop and some sandpaper would prolly do it the most justice.
.
2 questions. number one- did the blade have any nicks no matter how vague? and number 2 what is the music? i love your videos thanks and keep it up!
So... what can this knife do that a comparable knife of half the price can’t? Lol. Every time I see someone struggling to chop or split wood with a knife, I laugh and rest in the knowledge that I carry a hand hatchet. My belly will be full and I’ll be enjoying a hot beverage while you’re still imagining your knife is as good as a hatchet.👍🏻
How did it last until today? Super nice review!
I don't use it as much since my main knife is the Tahoma Field Knife most outings, or the Klapatche
How does this knife compare to the Wilderness Guide 4.0? Which would you recommend?
Hey andy, does the bob have a true scandi grind? Or is there a micro 2nd bevel?
Its a micro mini convex edge
Or just micro convex….yeah :) Easily sharpened with a mouse pad n sandpaper or strop
How well does the bow brill divot hold up after use?
EPIC MUSIC TO LOG CHOPPING!!!!
How well does this knife hold an edge?
can you give me pointers on sharpening this knife.as the modified scandi grind has thrown me.is there acertain way thanks peace
25 degrees on each side.
Why is the blade length only 4 and 1/2 inches?
I see people commenting that this knife's got heft, say as compared to ESSE 4, but it looked pretty lightweight to me here.
Can the steel belt clip be given an upgrade? Any suggestions?
Nice music by the way.
The blade length is about average for scandi utility knives. The knife does have some heft due to it being 3/16ths of an inch thick. I'm used to using large knives and machetes, so to ME it feels average. The steel belt clip is formed into the sheath, but I'll tell you that you'd probably want to keep it if you tried it. It works very well, and is difficult to come off by accident, and it keeps its angle well.
i believe the belt clip is not removable
The clip is removable, there is a video of someone putting on the other side.
Does your knife have the red liners and are your handles removable?
what is the notch for on the one side of the pommel or butt of the knife?
Yes on red liners and removable. Although the brass hollow rivet will need to be replaced in the handle. Notch on the back is the shango notch demonstrated in the video..
Thank You!
You bet!
The only thing I do not like is the chopping, which I'm coming from a Becker bk2
Put a true scandy grind on it and remove the secondary going you will thank me later it’s so much better and sharper
The only downside there is that you cannot spark the fire rod with the back of the knive.
true scandi grind or convex scandi?
Convex
Is the coating toxic?
If it's in your guts ya.
@@beinghuman3225 😶
When you were chopping in the beginning you weren't doing it quite right
honestly?
too big and clunky
I much prefer the Becker BK16 as lighter in the hand and easier to use
