As an older person, it makes me very happy to see younger people smile while hearing music they've never heard before.
Thank you, I enjoyed it.
That's me.
You can tell it definitely touched a spot in their young hearts..đđ
Got to love these reactions to the music of greens and twenties. This music should never be forgotten
Hmmmmm, memories flooding back ,passion, pleasure ,groans and sighs, sounds of youth dancing between truths and lies, when my youth was full of warm hellos snd cold goodbyes, made you feel and think hey? THE DAN,,NICE TO SEE YOU FEEL IT,RESPECT
Steely Dan is definitely a rabbit hole you want to dive into. "Aja" (pronounced "Asia") is one of the great albums in music history and absolutely worth a listen from beginning to end.
Agreed!!
This!!
Yeah, but you definitely NEED a safety harness, so you can have someone pull you out if you get stuck đ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł.
I agree.. I remember putting Aja on my record player and just playing it over and over
Go right to Aja or Gaucho to hear amazing production values and studio musicians playing Iconic Jazz Rock . Waste no time for aural eargasms !
Steely Dan: Your favorite bandâs favorite band.
Steely Dan is their own genre. Youâll see that as you dive more into their catalog of music. Their sound developed into a more funky, jazzy sound as they released each album. The best studio musicians were hired to work on each song on each album. Their grooves have been sampled literally hundreds of times. Youâll recognize their song Black Cow immediately which was sampled by Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. I suggest a Steely Dan stream for these rock and roll hall of fame members. â€ïžâïžđ
Good comments. While Steely Dan isn't my all-time favorite band (Zeppelin, The Who for me there), but I looooooooove this song. IMO, catchiest/smoothest guitar solo of ANY rock song. VERY smooth, mixing in the keyboards, etc...INCREDIBLE!!
The 70's was the greatest decade for music because of the variety of genres and the incredible artistry from master musicians.
The guitar solo is actually Denny Dias playing an electric sitar and the organ solo is played by Donald Fagen on some cheap piece of garbage organ he found in a thrift store, but it produced the sound he was going for. Fagen and Walter Becker were maniacal about every note being exactly what they wanted.
Probably a Farfisa lol
@@MrRabbit43 it was a cheap Yamaha organ with a pitch bend. Very cool sound he got out of it
The keyboard solo perhaps but the main part is a Wurlitzer from what I've read
âHey Nineteenâ and âBlack Cowâ. Canât go wrong with Steely Dan. Great reaction. đđ»â€ïž
Peg, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, and Time Out Of mindâ€
You folk are just catching this, I heard it as it was gettn airplay as a 70s kid. Good sounds was just that.
Blow your mind with Alan Parsons .....y'all late fa sure
Great songs!!! I would add Peg in there as well!!
Midnight Cruiser, Ricki dont Lose that Number, Kid Charlemagne. Such great stuff!
This song has a groove so wide, you could land a plane on it.
One of the greatest bands of the 70's, hit after hit. Had rock on fire. Yes sir!!!
They have zero bad songs.
I mean like ZERO bad songs!
Such a cool song. After 50 years I never get tired of it.
The lyrics to Steely Dan songs are just about subterranean, they're cryptic and dense with meaning. Part of the appeal to many fans (I raise my hand as well).
Steely Dan wrote songs about some of the grittier aspects of life. "Do It Again" was about someone whose vices led him to keep on repeating the same mistakes, "Dirty Work" deals with infidelity, "Reeling In The Years" is a reflection on a wild relationship with an unappreciative girl - and these are on the FIRST album!
P.S. "Midnight Cruiser" deals with a couple of guys who are doing a last hurrah on the streets that are different from when they were younger. A very melancholy tune with a smooth jazz sound.
Steely Dan is a great band. âDo It Againâ and âReelin in The Yearsâ are my favorite songs.
Great songs for sure but you need to listen to some more steely dan bro. Check out âThe Royal Scamâ album and let me know if you have any new favorite songs. After that maybe some âCountdown to Ecstasyâ and some âAjaâ, then âGauchoâ, etc.
One of the best ever bands to come out of the 70's.
My Mom gave me this song as a kid because I was such a hellion.
It's a song that only gets better with the passing of time.
Hey TNT, Steely Dan were actually 2 people, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, who surrounded their selves with the finest studio musicians around to produce a precise, clean sound.
Not at first. This debut album and the next 2, Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic, were the original Steely Dan Band. Fagen and Becker actually joined an existing group of Jeff Skunk Baxter, Denny Dias, Jim Hodder, and David Palmer. They toured and were a typical rock band until 1974. Only after Fagen and Becker decided they didn't want to keep touring did they transition to a "studio only" band with dozens of guest musicians.
One of the best bands ever
Steely Dan is one of the greatest bands of all time. Music is timeless, complex, funky, jazzy and you can listen to albums cover to cover and never get bored. Fagen and Becker, the two geniuses behind this music always used the best studio musicians to make their iconic music. The instrumental solos in their songs are so unique and special.
WARNING! This is not a rabbit hole, it's a bottomless pit you will never get out of! Have fun and enjoy the freefall.
I wish I could listen to this song for the first time again... So jealous
I remember back in the 80s working at a top-end audio shop for home and car audio, we would always put on Steely Dan to truly hear the clarity of the speakers and the deep bass. Great choice of track selection!
Tasha is so cute moving her shoulders immediately to the groove. đ
This track, the very first track on the very first album, almost immediately became a HUGE radio hit. How's that for hitting the ground running. This was the original Steely Dan BAND. Fagen and Becker joined forces as songwriters for this preexisting band forned by guitarists Denny Dias and Jeff Skunk Baxter, also included drummer Jim Hodder and vocalist David Palmer. They were a fairly typical rock group circa 1972 and toured from 72>74. Only later did Fagen and Becker want to stop touring and concentrate on their obsession with studio perfection beginning with the Katy Lied album. They wanted to push more in the jazz fusion direction from what started as a more traditional rock band.
So this song has been an iconic and popular Steely Dan hit and favorite and has been played on the radio for 50+ years now. Still as smooth as silk and cool as ever! Only Steely Dan can make a song about a gambling addiction sound so laid back and groovin.
I feel that this should be the first Steely Dan song ppl should listen to when they are hearing them for the first time. It's the first song i ever heard by them back in 1973
It was the first song off their first album. That's why it was the first one most of us ever heard.
A monster hit. Even the black stations played it.
FUN FACT: This song is about addiction in all its forms.
You just can't go wrong with Steely Dan.
Reelin' in the years is the next song chronologically.
âšThen âDirty Workâââšđđœâš
Steely Dan was probably one of the most versatile groups from the 70's for sure. I would encourage you both to look further into their music catalog because, this group turned out some great memorable music that definitely won't disappoint, " Peg " " Reelin in the years " " Deacon Blues " " Hey Nineteen " just to name a few.
So true. I'll add their songs, "FM," "My Old School" and Rikki, Don't Lose That Number"
Hey Nineteen is soooo funky
Woooooo!!!! DEACON BLUES and HEY NINETEEN â€đ„đ„đ„đ„â€
One of the most iconic songs ever recorded. I think you would really enjoy exploring Steely Dan - their music is phenomenal!
Yep, Jo..I had this album in high school in 74 -75 era. ..Dirty Work, Reelin' in the Years , Midnite Cruiser, etc.. Not a bad song on it...Ricki Don't Lose That Number , great also from another album.
I love both of your personalties... ..so engaging. Wonderful to listen and see your reaction. Tasteful, intelligent commentary.
Eagles and Steely Dan were good friends. In Hotel California, the line "they stab it with their STEELY knives" was a shout-out to Steely Dan.
Yes. You got it. Three mistakes, criminal, relationships, gambling are three examples used about humans repeating bad judgment done over and over without learning. The Leonard's spots haven't moved.
This song is some of the easier lyrics to decipher they wrote. If you react to any more Steely Dan you'll see what I mean.
I believe Steely Dan created it's own genre. I believe their sound is unique.â
Reeling in the years, Peg, Black Cow, FM, Hey Nineteen!!!! One of the coldest bands of all time
You can't go wrong with steely Dan! A favorite song of mine from them is " kid Charlemagne" it's a jam âïž
Steely Dan nobody can sound like them so talented should be illegal
Steely Dan had Platinum Albums before they even started touring.
This really is a f*cking masterpiece.
I grew up with this music, glad you're able to enjoy and appreciate it !
I'm a Fool to do your Dirty Work... what a great band!
I consider this one of those songs that is perfect. I was born in 1968 and heard this song as a child. I loved it then and I still love it today.
Rikki Don't Lose That Number is another good one from them!
Man you nailed it... Steely Dan has very cryptic music, and to her point you get lost in the groove so you don't 100% pay attention to the words. Exactly how this song and MOST of their songs can be described. Cryptic, hidden meanings and lost on the melody. Pure Genius.
This was always a song I could felt have jammed on even longer
Yup, a Band! Gotta do Steely Dan's - Black Cow, Peg, FM, Reelin' In the Years, and Hey Nineteen!
This Is Their Debut Album & The Perfect Place To Start..Once You've Heard This Album,, You Will Know Why They Are Considered To Be Absolutely Legendary Music Icons.
I was about 4yrs old when this song came out. Even the I knew this would always be one of my favorites songs. This song is perfect.
I was 5
Get ready for the fantastic voyage as you dive into the great Steely Dan. You will definitely be happy you did.
Saw these guys in a small stadium in Vancouver bc. One of my fav concerts
More Steely Dan! đđœđđœđđœ
First of many great songs.
I was lucky enough to see them a few years ago before Walter Becker, who is one of the original two members passed. I've always listened to Steely Dan and they didn't disappoint live đ„đđŒ
Steely Dan is one of your favorite groups, you just may not know it yet.
everybody likes the da..flat out music of another level
a song about addictions. re-doing movie scenes, cycles we get into.. genius song,, great. smooth music.
Oh lord, You have an entire catalog to go thru!!!!
One of the best. Now that is jazz/rock fusion! Never better! đđ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„
CBAT I have been listening to for fifty years. Every time I hear it again, there are things that I didn't hear before, new interpretations that I missed. All of SD is that way...
Do it again was a prelude to the direction Steely Dan went in the middle to late 70s leaning towards jazz rock style than exclusively rock.Do it again has Afro-Latin feel.Great song.
AJA!!!
Sax and drum heaven.
We used Steely Dan for all my wifeâs breathing exercises when she was preparing to have our 5 kids ! It just made for an easy & smooth rhythm & easy listening for these exercises !
Ol' Jack was a player. Living life again and again with his vices that kept breaking him down like a wheel tuning. Steely Dan has a remarkable catalog of music.
Weed, trout fishing and Steely Dan at the age of 19, I still love them all!!
It just hit me how much of a Doors vibe that opening has âïž
Steely Dan is definitely a band.
I'm subscribing for your journey with Steely Dan. You're going to love it!!
Steely Dan (look up the meaning of that) IS the most sophisticated music around. I saw them when I was 14, in1973 ~ Been in love with them ever since. Please treat your ears to more of their music.
Uh-oh! Another rabbit hole! Steely Dan are Donald Fagan and Walter Becker (RIP) with many studio musicians who became famous in their own right including Michael McDonald, Larry Carlton, Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie among many, MANY others. Enjoy!
I think this is song about addictions - Violence, Kinky women, gambling
Love the jam, and love the reaction...
Seventies. Best decade in the 20th century for music imo.
So many hits, a rabbit hole to get deep into.
Steely Dan is GREAT jazz rock,,,,đ„đ„đ„đđ
Nobody can equal these guys so smooooth!
Yes "jump into more Steely Dan". All of their songs I've heard are awesome, and I've heard many.

Do "Aja"!!!! From a 40 year DJ, musician and songwriter, its one of the greatest albums ever made....period!!!!
The smiles on your faces say it all

[Plays some Steely Dan]

Once you hear them...mmmmm...delicious!
Yes, yes they are. Everything they did was spot on. Such a deep rabbit hole...I love F.M., Hey Nineteen, Reelin' in the Years, Kid Charlemagne, Ricky Don't Lose That Number, Peg, and Deacon Blues.
Walter Becker (RIP)...so talented
I play this record every day thanks
Yeah - one of my all-time favs also!! Good choice!
That Coral Guitar solo!!!! (electric sitar) Love the reaction btw
Time Out of Mind is a Steely Dan Banger. đ€
Music is life, innit? Welcome to the club, y'all.
STEELY DAN, "DO IT AGAIN". Tasha said it all with those 70'S GROOVY VIBE. There are so many far out GROOVY hits by this very hip tracks. Some more..."REELIN IN THE YEARS", "RICKY DON'T LOOSE THAT NUMBER", "DIRTY WORK", "DEACON BLUES", "PEG", "HEY 19", "JOSIE", "F.M.(NO STATIC AT ALL)", "BABYLON SISTER", "KID CHARLEMAGNE", "MY OLD SCHOOL", "BLACK FRIDAY", "BAD SNEAKERS", "HAITIAN DIVORCE", "BLACK COW", "ANY MAJOR DUDE WOULD TELL YOU", "AJA". Peace...
Go down this very deep rabbit hole. There is no other band like Steely Dan. Try Black Cow, Hey Nineteen, Show Biz kids, Daddy don't live in that NY city no more, and the list goes. On and on. You two will fall in love with them guaranteed!
Sister has that â vibe â going on listening to this classic JAM. I was the same way lol, and still am. đđđ
So many great songs to discover! I recommend My Old School, Bodhisattva, Hey Nineteen, Peg... the list goes on forever, dive deep into their rabbit hole đ°đ”
The greatest Steely Dan song.
I get such a kick watching you guys listen to the music of my life. I lost my wife 2 years ago. This was the stuff we grew up learning to love each other to!
Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers are 70's classic bands
This was the first album as a teen in '73! This album was out before disco, and it really stands the test of time! Great reaction TNT!!
What does disco have to do with this?
Always the best musicians. Smooth and tight!
'"' The feel it gives me '" yesđ
Hell yeah! I love the way she was dancing to this! Lol nothing beats good music.
A little known song from a little known album of Steely Dan that has a stone cold groove is âLUNCH WITH GINAâ. It will have you on your feet dancing in a jump.
That is pretty much the same way I reacted the first time I heard this. The amazing guitar solo followed by those keyboards was mind blowing.
Every cut on Aja is KILLING IT.
This was the first song on side one of their debut album. Released in 1972 and it's still as relevant as ever. Go through their records one by one in chronological order. You'll be happy you did.
I believe that this, like most Steely Dan songs, has lyrics that can be interpreted several different ways. To me this song represents addictions and/or obsessions suchas gambling and love. There are gambling references such as the "wheel" which could easi;u mean a roulette wheel and another that says "with a handle in your hand" which could mean a slot machine., There are references to a relationship that is certainly not a stable one. Is that love..... or is it an obsession. I believe that Fagan and Becker wrote lyrics that are up for interpretation by the individual listener.
Groovin to this song on 70s stereo there was nothing better there was a vibe to it. New words entered our vocabulary. Truly a great time to listen to music.
