  • In this musical theatre video I demonstrate the difference between the mezzo-soprano voice and the contralto voice as they pertain to musical theatre. They are different kinds of voices that can do different things but many times both voices can handle the same role in the same key quite comfortably. They are just going to approach the songs in different ways to adjust them for their own individual tones.

    This is really helpful! I’m still trying to figure out what my voice type is. I can’t really belt on high notes, and I can’t go too low either. I used to think I’m a contralto, but I usually think my voice sounds better in the middle, not too high not too low. I can sing Colbie Caillat and Ingrid Michaelson comfortably. I can also sing Adele, but not very comfortable on the high notes in a few of her songs. Some Lady Gaga songs, for example, “You and I” is great for me until it gets to those final “you and I” repetition, it’s just very tiring for my voice and not comfortable, and the falsetto doesn’t quite give the song what it needs. I identity with Brooke Fraser’s voice, for example. I am thinking maybe I’m a lyric mezzo, if that’s a thing? Anyway. Keep it up with the content, I just subscribed.

      Thank you so much! I’m so glad you found this helpful! I’m getting quite a few comments on my other “singing” videos because vocal ranges can be hard to define and there are shades of grey in between. I’m working on another one that will try to define different belt tones between soprano, mezzo, contralto…stay tuned 😀👍

    I am a high mezzo-soprano (close to soprano). I notice that soprano ingenue songs sound more belt-like in my range, as a mezzo.

      Yes, that’s probably true. Think of Ariel in Little Mermaid. She sits right on edge of mezzo and almost true soprano. Some of her songs are in a very high register and are belted out. You are correct. Several ingenue parts are written like that, but younger voices tend to be or sound higher.😀 Thanks for sharing!

      @@roxiesbroadwaybreakdown5599 Ariel sits right in my vocal range. I can also sing Anastasia’s songs really well.

    This is very informative. Actually, I never thought you were a contralto until u start singing. I thought that when contralto speaking, the voice is also dark/deep, which is not the case for you and is very unique. Is it not always the case? I cannot find anything about it online. :))

      Hmmm, I don’t believe the range of a speaking voice always matches the range of a singing voice-but probably similar. For instance, a singer can expand their range the more they practice. I’ve always sung alto since I was a kid, but my speaking voice has obviously gotten lower and lower as I’ve gotten older and so has my singing range. Sometimes when people speak I can tell if they are a soprano, tenor, baritone, etc… but they may also be a mix of mezzo or Bari-tenor, so just depends. Thanks for watching!😀👍Hope that helped.

    Would a mezzosoprano or contralto in musical theater sound the same as their operatic counterparts?

    • @roxiesbroadwaybreakdown5599
      @roxiesbroadwaybreakdown5599  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Great question! Operatic voices and musical theatre voices are very different. Operatic are very classical and theatrical ones tend to be more brassy and showy. There are some roles in musicals that require a more refined classical sound leaning towards operatic but for the most part the two voical tones are very different. Thanks for watching.😀

    Thank you for your video 🙏🏻 Now I see that I am not a contralto. However, I take a few tones lower than expected from mezzo soprano. My range is 126 - 860 Hz. I have been identified as a mezzo when I was younger. Does it make me Contro-mezzo? Can you name any singers who have similar voice type, please?

      For more details: I can imitate closely Madonna, Billie Eilish, Sandra Nasic, Dolores O'Riordan, Tony Braxton + the most of pop-rock baritone singers. 2nd soprano in a choir was doable, but too thin, 2nd Alto was comfortable. But I can change tone when belting highs and they sound more lyrical and soprano-ish than contraltos.

      It sounds like you definitely tend to be more in the mezzo range to me. Contralto can comfortably cover even tenor up to some mezzo range, but it sounds like you are not as comfortable in deep chest voice. If your belt tones are lyrical sounding rather than coming from a true chest belt then I would say mezzo. The singers you mentioned are quite varied in style and tones so if you can imitate them you must have a great range! Just keep honing your talents, taking care of your voice, don’t over use or strain and you should be able to sing lots of different songs! Thanks for watching 😀

    Hey, I tried to sing "the bad guy"because my range is contralto too, but it seems different, my voice was higher than the Bellies Eilish 's voice , how's that?!?!

      Well…. Billie’s voice is hard to classify. She definitely has her own distinct sound. It’s a fresh pop sound that is very breathy and airy. She has said herself in a documentary she doesn’t understand how people can belt. I love her sound, but I would say it’s limited. But so distinct kind of hard to sing her songs. I don’t know that I would say she’s contralto just because she sounds sort of low , because there is not much power or substance behind it. I’m contralto but I could never sing one of her songs, she’s a hard one to sing! I hope this was helpful, thanks for watching 😀
