Hey Chris! As I asked in the full episode: What about directly vaporizing dry cannabis herb with heat (not extracts), either from conduction or convection (so, no other chemicals involved, and without combustion: carbon dioxide)? It would be awesome if Andrew and you also talk about this route of administration. Perhaps in a quick video-call clip? 😉

      Hi
I vaped for the first time two weeks ago. Bought a vaping device , put liquid in that contained small amounts of nicotine.
After vaping my throat started to feel sore. I then developed throat inflammation / infection, and with catarrh gathering in the throat. 2 weeks later i still have the throat soreness.
Anyone know why that is and why it happened ? I didnt vape heavily

How did you get over nicotine withdrawals? I’m a recovering alcoholic (3.5 years) and quit all drugs. I run an average of 8 miles a day. But I can’t quit vaping. I’ve tried several times but anytime I’ve tried, the withdrawals turn me into a raging asshole to the point where I almost can’t control it. The last time I tried it really screwed with my relationship. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    • @BarefootPhilosopher
      @BarefootPhilosopher Před 10 měsíci +26

I did the same a little over 2 months ago. Withdrawals are nothing. Almost entirely mental. Once you make a decision to quit and stick with the decision, only you can stop yourself.
UPDATE: today marks 9 months without a cigarette. The hard part is getting yourself to make the leap and commit to quitting. It's all pretty easy from there. Nicotine leaves your body fairly quickly (3 days if I'm not mistaken), so after that, if you're having cravings, it's all mental and you're letting yourself succumb to a fantasy of desire. You don't need it. Just drop it. Live a life of freedom and health. You can do it!

On my third attempt, I am now one month nicotine free today and no longer feel the weight of the addiction that is just a mind game and once I realized that, I became so embarrassed and felt disgusted with every cigarette I smoked. I know so many that switched to vaping and became more hooked. I feel the difference in my breathing, exercise is more enjoyable, my skin is clearer and my teeth are whiter. Congrats brother. I just beat my addiction as well, 3 weeks smoke free(no nicotine replacement therapy either, nothing). I vaped heavily for a year, and actually stopped Vaping and smoked cigarettes for 3 months before I quit.
Imo, Vaping is way more addictive then cigarettes. I tried quitting Vape cold Turkey and couldn’t bro. That’s why I used cigarettes to get off. Vaping in my opinion is worse for the brain, a lot worse than cigarettes. Heavily concentrated doses of nicotine is NOT good for the brain. I remember times after taking fat vapes thinking to myself, this is not good for my brain, I’m either permanently or temporarily damaging my mind.
Luckily my addiction was only for 1 year, so I’m praying I didn’t cause any permanent damage to my brain. I don’t think I did, I’ve been clean for 3 weeks now and I feel back to my old self. Haven’t felt these levels of mental clarity and ambition in awhile and I’m so fckin happy. Vaping especially robbed me of my motivation and ambition, shits terrible.
Again, I’m proud of you for quitting brother! It’s amazing to read others peoples comments who have quit and are experiencing the same benefits as me. Stay up fam

With cigs I was a pretty light smoker, 3-5 per day. When I switched to vaping, I would draw on it all day long, never going more than 15 minutes or so without a few puffs. When I started going into the bathroom at work several times a day to get a hit, I felt ridiculous and knew it had to stop. Vaping is SO much more addictive because of its accessibility. When I quit I was completely blown away by how calm I felt, unaware of the constant state of anxiety that nicotine kept me in. Like I was back to being myself.

For those struggling with nicotine addiction, I haven't found a better way to kick it than to become obsessed with something that doesn't allow you to smoke. I used to smoke and vape. I got into jumping rope (boxer style) for fitness followed by long-distance running. Now, if I thought about bumming a smoke from a buddy, I know that my running the next morning-something that is normally a pleasurable experience-would be miserable. Sometimes, these things can provide just enough distance between craving and response to give us the space to make better decisions.

I had smoked for about 15 years, and switched to nicotine gum for about 5 years without ever being able to stop. I switched to vaping, and was able to gradually taper myself off of nicotine by mixing the juice myself, and after vaping flavored juice with no nicotine for a month I was able to quit entirely. You will also find that the British Health System relies on vaping to reduce and quit smoking.

I transitioned from smoking to vaping, I was a dual smoker/vaper for some time and eventually put the cigs away. I'm recently 90 days nicotine free again. It is such an evil battle that convinces me to indulge for a 4 second minor morning buzz that I chase the rest of the day which never comes due to the frequency in which I vape. I started vaping casually like a year and a half ago, hitting coworkers vapes a bit while at work. That morphed into consistently hitting friends' vapes while they were around and that then morphed into me finally buying a disposable vape for the first time about 6 weeks ago or so. As of November 1st however, the sale of flavored vape products has been banned where I live and honestly I'm quite happy about it. I was set to keep on buying those disposables as long as they were available. I never had a history of smoking before I ever touched a vape besides a few cigarettes (and not counting weed).

self-rolled cigs take 1/3 of the time to smoke, don’t feel as nasty, and the whole process disincentivizes smoking. lmao

The detriment nicotine withdrawal had on my sleep - particularly with regards to sleep fragmentation or disruptions - was something I only realized when I switched to patches and kept them on at night. So do I. Keep in mind it takes about 20 years on average for the first signs of damage to become obvious. I didn't say it takes 20 years of nicotine use to damage you, only to do enough damage to start being visible. Vapes have been around for decades but got the first patent in 2003 and only started being generally used a few years after that so we're on the cusp of those key 2 decades. And realistically even 20 years is still the beginning, you start seeing the damage exponentially with time with way more at 30 and 40 years. This sounds like a long time but if you start vaping in your teens its just enough to cut your life short. Remember tobacco users lose about 10-25 years of life expectancy with their decade or so often marked by illnesses caused by their vice. Realize that studies have already shown emphysematous changes to the lifetime vapers' only lungs even if they never smoked.
Obviously nicotine toasts your circulation with the primary cause of death and disease in this drug's users not being cancer, but cardiovascular and it isn't the tars either because pipe, cigar and oral/smokeless tobacco users (which receive greater dosages of this pesticide) having a greater degree of circulatory death and disease. They lie and say "NICOTINE HAS NEVER BEEN SHOWN TO CAUSE CANCER" but the most potent carcinogens in tobacco (or any nicotine product for that matter) are tobacco specific nitrosamines which come about as a byproduct of nicotine degradation just sitting there. So any form of nicotine is loaded with this deadly poison as well including the patches and gum. Therefore your anecdotal feeling is just because we're not yet noticing and tying 2 and 2 together but based on what we already know about nicotine itself and the dynamics of introducing this poison in your body it is extremely likely in the coming 3-5 years there will be some big studies coming out about the harms of vaping as well..

The lung damage it caused in US teens were due to illicit vapes with vitamin E. The only shown carcinogen in vaping is formaldehyde but it comes in quantities of 1/100 of that of smoking and only if your vape is burning at a too high temperature. For reference, here is an article from Uk Cancer Research, essentially concluding that it is not cancerous. Other studies I've seen put its health impact at around 5% of that of smoking. Nicotine as a substance has never been specifically bad (or good). It has its own advantageous and deleterious effects depending on why you use it. The main difference between smoking and vaping as nicotine delivery systems is you are simply swapping one cluster of toxic chemicals and additives for another, less understood and potentially just as (if not more) harmful cocktail of chemicals. Injecting pure nicotine could be reasoned to be better by someone in need of their fix. Vaping is far more addictive than smoking for me, not just for ease of use, but you get massive concentrations of nicotine instantly. Regardless, nicotine or any sort of self-"medication" belies a deeper indication of poor health, whether it be physical, mental, or spiritual.

I would really love for content creators around these topics to make a unbiased talk about the effects of, for example vaping, but also give an explanation about how our body handles these substances, and how it rebounds post usage.
So much of the content is "this is bad because I say so and I have this degree/phd/title so you should believe me"
Im not saying Andrew Huberman isn't far more qualified than myself to make judgements on topics such as nicotine vaping, but all I heard here was "we are inhaling these chemicals into our lungs" yet everyone whos been taught anything about cigarette smoking is is the timeline of how our bodies repair after quitting. Our bodies have the ability to repair themselves, but that point is often over looked.
Taking one hit isn't doing permanent, irreversible damage. Smoking weed isn't doing that either. Abusing any substance, or abusing anything (video games) is inherently bad, but simply saying "this is bad" and not properly educating people on why its bad and where the effects are felt the most, and how to go about managing them or using in moderation is simply unproductive.

I.E "You should refrain from this thing because somebody smarter and more powerful than you (god, Jesus, Allah etc) .....doesn't LIKE this habit and considers it a sin...." These kind of invocations mean JACK to sooo many people because they remove authority, ownership and responsibility from the individual and instead try to employ a kind of "second hand" sense of obligation which not only doesn't work....it (quite rightly) makes many people rebel against this kind of "motivational" model.....because deep down, they KNOW it's just one big croc of sh*t.....even if the advice being given is wise and sound. People MUST be treated as having personal ownership before you try to motivate them, and if you try to "cheat code" that.....well.....good luck reaching your target audience!!

Every time I see professionals having this discussion they don't mention one huge element that differs between vaping and smoking that I have observed with my friends (ages ranging 18-36), and that is the frequency of use. With vaping, due to the lack of stinky smoke, people will be ripping constantly throughout the day. I had one girl tell me about an ex boyfriend who would reach for his vape in the middle of the night and hit it with his eyes still closed. If you compare this with the natural barriers that come with smoking (the need to go outside if you don't want your house to smell terrible, the need to out on shoes/clothes to go outside, etc.) then you find that there are a lot of casual smokers that might only be smoking a few cigarettes a week, usually at night on the weekend when they're out with people. I have been surprised by how many people who smoke are not chain smokers like I was led to belief growing up, and that there is a huge range in people who partake in cigarette smoking, whereas everyone I know who buys vapes will be vaping very frequently throughout the day.
I don't think it is accurate to refer to it as "smoking vs vaping" because they always talk about smokers as people smoking a pack a day, which I think is something more common in older generations. Living in LA I've observed groups of actors, dancers, models in their mid to late thirties, and they don't vape, they will smoke like 3-4 cigarettes a day max on days that they spend hanging out by the pool with their friends. That's just their vibe.
I hope that these older researchers spend more time understanding how these drugs are being used in different populations instead of only studying what it does to the body.

I smoked a pack and a half a day for 20 years tried quitting for 15 years of that. Switched to vaping and within a year I weaned down to zero nicotine then dropped it altogether. Vaping is a wonderful tool for quitting nicotine, any other use is ridiculous.

How can you just talk about " vaping" vaping what? there are so many formulations . The most basic being prop. glycol, glycerine and nicotine.
It's akin to saying eating is bad for you.

Former kratom addict...kratom, like any other drug should not be illegal. I cannot use any drug including kratom successfully for some reason that I don't understand, and it destroys my life. Kratom can, and should be used successfully by people who need/want it.

Never touched opiates but I am heavily dependent on Kratom. It’s my own fault and I knew the risks, I did it anyway. I can’t sleep without it, I need it every 8 hours and the withdrawls while not as horrific as heroin are definitely really unpleasant. I’ll be quitting at the end of the year not because I want to but because I have no choice. That said it’s such a great time, I feel really fantastic on it even at the same dose I’ve been taking for over 3 years now.

I smoked cigarettes for 12 years , vaped for 2 years after the cigarettes. In those 2 years of vape, my lungs have never been so bad. I run way less then when I smoked cigarettes and honestly feel way worse then cigarettes. I used to be able to run 2 miles straight when smoked 12 years of cigarettes. Now I’m barely at 1 mile after I switch to a vape.

I would like Andrew to list all of those toxins from vaping. I ask because vape juice has 4 ingredients: VG, PG, nicotine and flavors.
These toxins must be in the flavoring agents and they vary from flavor to flavor. Therefore, there could be a way of reducing harm by looking at those.

Vaping seems even more ridiculous here in new Zealand given since I could remember as a child our country has pushed so hard to disincentivise smoking, by similar to the UK banning it in so many public spaces, and taxing the crap out of it making it so expensive. But here's a cheaper tastier alternative that's even more attractive to the youth 🤦😂 absolute lunacy.
How about we try harder to get rid of meth in our country by releasing a cheaper version that tastes like strawberry cheesecake? 😂

I quite smoking by going to vaping then quitting that. Vaping did not really do it for me. To much hassle with oil, electricity, break downs and it just never really satisfied me. But it did remove the edge from quitting smoking. I feel that you are doing more harm then good with this video

One study that almost never gets talked about is the HEAT from vaping has the similar damage as smoking. You are putting hot air into your lungs which are pillow soft tissue. This in long due time has negative effects, Any one thats been to a Suana has felt this pain of breathing in hot air for to long, thus why we don't stay in one for an hour, well one of many reasons
But ether way vaping could just be flavored water as many here use, still has negative effects and honestly looks stupid..
"OOHHH wait for me guys i gotta charge my Vape...."
