This is a wonderful, professional bass rendition. What you are doing on the bass is not easy. 5 STARS!!!!!

@@daryldavies8525 Thanks so much Daryl. We are playing this song at church tomorrow, so I was practicing it today anyhow and figured I’d record it. Did one take and that’s what I got. lol. I can’t play this on my fretless though. 🤓 Appreciate it brother. God bless!

      @@mjmason75 Wonderful.
I am also doing my final run for church tomorrow.
You nailed the bass line. I pray that the entire band will catch-up with you.
Everything is now is God’s Hand. God Bless and wishing you well!

I love this version. Makes it move all over the neck. Very cool! Rock on!

@@themutebassplayer I’ve tried to learn to play anywhere on the neck that I choose, and although I’ve definitely
gotten more comfortable playing all over, I still end up on the wrong notes sometimes. Lol. Learning and practice never ends on any instrument. I feel like there is so much to learn and get better at, that sometimes it seems overwhelming on where to start. I am happy that I’ve gotten to where I’m at though, but I know all my weaknesses and what I need to work on. I just like this style of playing, so I just go for it. 🤓

Amazing. Instant sub. In general, What is your approach to those tasty fills?

    • @mjmason75

I just spent like 15 minutes typing a long detailed reply for you and then when I went to post it, it disappeared. Arrrrrggggggg!!!! Probably just my fault somehow. LOL
Anyhow, basically it comes down to mixing in triads mostly. So if the song is in G Major and we are on a G chord, I might play the 3rd or 5th, which would be a B or D. These are also known as chord tones, since a G chord is G-B-D, which would be the 1-3-5 of the scale. Playing these notes outside of the root note adds a different flavor that I personally find to be tasty. So I often mix them in.
For the fills, I might start or end my fill on one of the chord tones as well to give a different flavor (rather than the root note), and during my runs I use full scales and sometimes pentatonic, but I rather than play just ascending or descending note runs that are predicable and sometimes boring (although the do work), I try to play a few notes or so in sequence, then jump to another note and continue my run. This makes the run more interesting, unpredictable, and melodic... rather than it just sounding like you are running down the scale note per note.
Hope this helps. Hit me up if you have any questions. I'll try my best to help. I'm self taught, never took lessons, so I'm no theory expert, but I've been playing for 35 years and I've played professionally for many years, including touring and studio work with different bands and artists, but now I mostly just play at church!

When your church has no guitar player
Extremely well done! I would be kicked off the team :)

@@tedtriestech8864 Haha. They pretty much just let me play whatever I want, which I really appreciate. It’s honestly just my style. That’s how I play everything, but I always try to keep the groove of the song to keep it flowing. I’m a huge Matt Ramsey fan, and he plays like me, but just much better. 🤓

So nice tone! And warm, and punchy. What effects are you using?

@@robertassirvinskas6179 Thank you. I used an HX Stomp with a compressor, and amp, a slight wah (always on auto wah), chorus, octaver, & distortion/fuzz. I sold my Stomp recently as I purchased a Fractal Audio FM3, and couldn’t afford to keep both. However, I think I have the patch saved, and if so, I can send it to you if you have a Stomp and wanted to try it.

I don’t have Stomp. Occasionally I use Zoom. I’ll try to make similar patch. By the way, these 16th run!

@@mjmason75 your video was shared in a worship bass group on Facebook. Just wanted to say great job! We played this two Sundays ago and your version is inspiring. As a recent bass convert, I was definitely studying some of the less complicated runs (and just enjoying the more complicated ones - definitely can't play those yet). You've got another subscriber now. Let me know if you find those HX stomp settings, I'd love to see if I could adapt anything you have already figured out for our church sets. 👍

@@gffhgfnn Appreciate that. Any particular part you are referring to. I played it spontaneously off the cuff (as in not preplanned bass lines), but I’m sure I can figure out any parts I played and break it down, and even explain musically what I was thinking (such as note choices and theory behind my choices). Let me know and I’ll see what I can do to break it down a bit for you.
