Can you sim the missiles with the small drones they use
You should run this same test with a functional Gepard or equivalent anti-aircraft gun system as a final point based layer of protection for anything that gets past the IRIS-T & Patriot systems
Yeah, was the first thing that I thought about. Also an AWACS. Would be the German/Nato Missile/AA defence layer.
it's all BS, any average programmer can write a system that kills 100% of the missiles (if there is enough ammo), its impossible to take any of this seriously, BUTm and they should have mentioned this as well, there is real data !, Iris kill rate was 90% (9/10) the first time it was used defending Kyiv, and that was the real thing, not this idiotic simulation
Yes against 200 shahid 136 iranian 11000 to 20000 dollars kamikaze drone + 40 cruise missiles??? The cocktail of death

Just a note, the IRIS-T sent to Ukraine is the SLM version with a range of 40km
and ukraine got the more powereful hensoldt trs-4d radar
@@Dommas1106 Sweden is using the SAAB 4d giraffe radar with the Iris-T system.
@@petter5721 The two air defence battalions has multiple radars the Giraffe AMB (UndE 23) Giraffe 75 (PS-90) and PS-91.
The Giraffe 4A has not been delivered but a test unit exist, the ordered version will have a high mast like the AMB in service when they are delivered.
The AMB is the current general search radar for the IRIS-T with the PS-91 being the local fire control radar for individual firing units.
The PS-90 is only 2D and is more used to cover gaps in the radar coverage (like if a hill blocks radar in a direction).
The AMB radar functions as the data node for the other radars, it can use multiple datalinks and can thus translate Link 16 for the PS-90 so all units share the same air picture.
IRIS-T SLM can be integrated with a variety of electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) guidance systems and AESA radars, such as Hensoldt TRML-4D, Thales Ground Master 200 MM/C, CEA CEAFAR, and SAAB Giraffe 4A. Sky sabre uses the SAAB Giraffe AMB and Rafael MIC4AD
The IRIS-T SLM missile launchers can be up to 20km from the radar and as the missiles have a command link, inertial navigation and GPS / Galileo and are are lock on after launch need not be in line of sight. The missiles are vertically launched so could be under the tree line or tree canopy while the radar or radars are sited on hills to get a good view. Hensoldt have a passive radar that means that the active radars need not be switched on until a threat is detected and needs to be targeted.
-Western systems are designed to be hard to find.

I hope to see a NASAMS 3 mod pop up - this is AMRAAM, AMRAAM-ER, IRIS-T and AIM-9X compatible. Also, try this scenario again but with apaches, duck behind those trees :)
Like you said, that dude Current Hill is a friggin' genius. They even LOOK good. If those operate close as good in real life I would take them in a heartbeat. You start layering things like the Gepard, MANPADS, the Roland...you got yourself a fighting chance. And that Frogfoot video is so stunning. As many times as I have been smashed in the face in DCS, I can verify that the ejection sequence in DCS is modeled correctly. Amazing footage
Valued Humanoid, Grim Reaper videos were created just for you!
@@gctzx lol Yes, and at the same time I did a thing! There's 2 items checked off the list.
You should run this with something that they likely have. Such as their S300 blended with the Iris-t and NASAMS.
Hey Cap, been enjoying your stuff since you were just an admiral. lol. Thanks for the entertainment and information, I nearly feel like I know so many in the Reapers, and like them all. Cheers from Nebraska.
Well in honor of a recent real world announcement, if the Raytheon MIM-23 HAWK is modelled in DCS, could you try out this 1970s/1980s era air defense system..... against various targets. 50km and 20k meter range.... very formable for it's time. The final version was 85% effective at hitting targets.
TBH I think Ukraine needs something even lower tech for these shahed drones, ZSU, Shilka, that kind of shit
It wouldn't a GR episode without "Get another one".
That deconfliction is amazing.
Would be really interested to see how Sky Sabre compares.
agree
@@grimreapers another idea. Modernised Taiwan defence vs Modernised China using these patriots (could even throw in a few IRIS).
@@grimreapers also, for your screen, Cap. It looks like you have HDR enabled on a non-HDR capable screen.
Sky Sabre should preform about the same as IRIS-T. The Sky Sabre uses a MMW active radar missile instead of imaging infrared but the precision of the technologies is about the same: both have hit to kill capability. Sky Sabre is based on the ASRAAM which doesn't have fins (small folding ones in the tail) and is purely thrust vectored so a launcher can carry more missiles due to their more compact nature. It might be a little better in saturation attacks for that reason. 24 instead of 16 missiles limited by launcher not software or radar. Both missiles have 60G capability. Perhaps IRIS-T is more efficient at maneuvering due to its wings but that would only effect range a little.
-Basically the UK, Germany and USA had a deal that the US would develop a medium range missile (that became AMRAAM) and the UK & Germany would develop ASRAAM) a short range infrared missile. Britain and Germany argued and split with Britain developing ASRAAM and German IRIS-T but they became friends again and developed Meteor together. This meant the US was upset and it developed AIM-9X instead of accepting the ASRAAM and IRIS-T. Anyway lots of good missiles. ASRAAM is clearly the best for F-35 due to its compact nature.
@@grimreapers The LFK NG is a 28kg mini version of the IRIS-T with a 10km range under development for Germany's SysFla / LFK NG project. It has vertical launch and lock on after launch and I suggest it will be a cost effective weapon for dealing with cruise similes.
8:11 a bit OP. Well the weapon officer for a iris t told that the sensor can track the heat signature of a cigarette, still is the accuracy very high here
29:26 That was almost identical to the Su-25 ejection footage with how the plane lost control even the sound of it.
Cap and his merry band! Always great videos. Be well all.
Oh you got the IRIS-T SL? That's awesome!
Interesting and informational 👍😊
Cap! That was some top gun maverick flying but more realistic. Nice job and great video
Holy cow that was amazing to watch.
Totally CRAZY...but amazing.
You don't really need to simulate. A few days ago Iris-T shot down 9/10 cruise missiles
thats not very good at all. as it would mean they could only shoot down 90 out of a 100,
@@Artoconnell 🤡
@@Artoconnell Well most Air defense systems only shoot down ~60% of the targets. And if we are being real russians would never launch 100 at the once nor do they have more than 300-400 left anyways
They need a lot more Iris-T missiles tho
@@Artoconnell i mean it's certainly better than the s400 that can't even intercept HIMARS rockets
Add in an awacs integrated with the sams. i expect a pretty near impenetrable dome if you do.
Now I hope for a IRIS-T SLM + TRML-4D Mod for you to fly against :D That Radar is a fucking monster.
The IRIS-T radar Sweden uses is the Giraffe series, it's most likely not used in Britain.
The britisch Sky Sabre does use the SAAB Giraffe radar
British Land Ceptor uses the SAAB Griraffe AMB Radar
Tell ya what Cap, that was some lovely flying matey.
Agreed; that low level stuff was truly inspired, was on the edge of my seat.
just started watching and 30 mins late! keep up the work
Thanks Cap! Entertaining. I wish Damp were there, so many things popped without him!
Wow, that Patriot is impressive and I'm so happy to see it in-game. Everyone thinks of Patriot has this old out of date system but they just kept making upgrades to the system. It may be overpowered versus reality, but what can you do? If people want to believe the S-400 can take out virtually everything hundreds of KMs away, I'd counter-argue that the Patriot can do it much better, just with a much smaller range.
I noticed when you had the wild weasels, the Patriot has a built-in counter because it appears detection results in a launch, then the missile appears to have datalink and lock-after-launch (and if I recall from my reading, it has its own radar), so the extra altitude the missile gains from the launch results in a much deadlier missile that can look down at the target through lower-level clutter.
If it is this effective, it would also explain why the US hasn't really been freaking out about the lack of missile defenses against incoming missiles and aircraft. The Patriot, plus ballistic missile defense like THAAD and mid-course defense, plus Aegis short/medium range and anti-ballistic capabilities, combined with short-range mobile units like the Avenger and Stryker M-SHORAD, along with units in development specifically anti-drone directed energy weapons. Finally, the US is in the R&D stage of developing a more robust SAM system as a whole in addition to working on fully integrating all of these systems into a large IADS. It also explains why the US has full access to Iron Dome but isn't desperate to adopt, purchase, and implement them (they effectively decided to pass on Iron Dome after setting up two mandated sites per Congressional order).
The Patriot has been continuously upgraded and is almost all new. The PAC-1 missiles are superseded. PAC-2 missiles intercept aircraft up to 160km away and PAC-3 missiles intercept other missiles using hit to kill up to about 45km away.
This is the BEST GR vid I haven't seen yet! 🤣
Ukraine actually does not use this IRIS System. It uses IRIS-T SLM with a longer ranger, Performance is pretty much equal to PAC-3 but the System is more compact, lighter and cheaper. One shot only costs 40% of a PAC 3 shot. Iris SLM can also Shoot totally cold without any radar and track optically or with IR, or with just the Missile seeker head being active. The Missile family, the IRIS is based on, is the German LFK-NG it is Modular, scalable and can Operate as a AAM, SAM and Ship based SAM. It can work as a Point Defense System (+50g hypermanouverability, fastest accelerating AA missile), Short ranged AA +15km, Medium Range AA +45km, or Long Range AA +100km
an other different would be that the truck based version , has 8 missels per truck , so double the missels as in this senario
IRIS-T has not demonstrated any capability against ballistic missiles. Plus the Israeli Stunner is now the PAAC-4 and designed specifically to counter Iranian ballistic missiles funded by the U.S. along with Arrow.
@@zeitgeistx5239 Yes it has. Its has very much demonstrated that Capability. And considdering it accelerates faster and turns harder then PAC 3, that's not exactly surprising. Also the Company who makes IRIS, Diehl, also provides a lot of tech towards for the PAC 2 and PAC 3. IRIS has a (by now combat prooven) >98% PK against Ballistic threats, according to the Ukrainian MoD, the Bundeswehr and Diehl.

Recently found myself occasionally saying "question mark" at the end of my questions. And also very occasionally saying "get another one" when someone makes a feckup. I get blank looks in response 😂
Start calling your coworkers “my beautiful people” and you’ll get some interesting responses.
Attack with 5th gen Aircraft and Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) which have a max drop range up to 15 nautical miles (28 km).
The first NASAMS units have already arrived in Ukraine. Not sure if they're equipped with AMRAAM-ER though. Note that the newer NASAMS can also fire AIM-9X, but I'm not sure if the ones in Ukraine can do so. There's also talk of sending I-HAWK, Crotale NG and Aspide SAM systems as well. Ukraine has also been asking about SAMP/T. It'll be interesting to see what they end up with, and how they'll organize this hodge-podge of different systems during and after the war.
HOOAH ADA Baby! I was a 16T PATRIOT Missile Crewmember 1991-1996!!! Never had the PAC 3 but we had the PAC 2+!! At the time, The Radar could look out to (UNCLASS) 100KM. Batteries were configured behind the target so as to see the incoming threat. This is what we did in Desert Storm and Desert Overwatch in Saudi Arabia. Imagine if you were in the ECS, there are two screens. One for the enlisted member and one for the officer whose main job is IFF. The screen had the radar and it looked like a large "V" Batteries normally would deploy their 8 launchers (Remember this is old) in a lazy "W" formation. The EPP, ECS, and AMG were all located in the back of the battery in what was blanketly termed "Fire Contol". Normal engagement for the PAC 2 and PAC2+ was 2 missiles per TBM. ABTs would get 1 each unless it was a bomber than 2.
It got my blood up when I read those armchair experts talk about it being a failure. Strategically it was a complete success. There is a pretty good article" Raytheon's response to WGBH Frontline" mentioning American crew success vs Israeli crews among other things. Nowhere does it or any article I know of talk about( not good war porn) the amazing effort of a handful of engineers at Trans-Tech ( I worked there after ) who redesigned and supplied waveguides for the system in phenomenal time under incredible pressure. "Oh if your widget doesn't work Israel comes in and nobody knows anything for sure but it's BAD." Anyway glad to see someone that knows it first hand from the soldier side.
@@SeedOfElijah my man! PATRIOT was designed to be a ABT deterrent. Proximity Fuze. Now, I know the PAC 3 was kinetic but still. I STILL hear to this day how ineffective the PATRIOT was and how it knocked the SCUD off course and killed the reservists in Doha. It wasn't designed at the time for missile to missile intercept, but it did a dang good job! No damn HAWK battery was doing what the PATRIOT did. Be safe my friend.
Those were no trees, but ENTS!
Anyway, try same mission with Ju-87 Stukas, with bombs or guns. Then you can hop over obstacles and it gives you more respond time to avoid and attack.
Hmm that's a bit similar to how Polish AA will be set up... Patriot PAC-3 and CAMM/Sky Sabre. With PAC-3 batteries additionally protected by CAMM , gun systems and manpads class missiles.
All plugged into IBCS that allows to use more radars for targeting - so not limited to Patriot radar, basically smaller radars can be just distributed over larger area and used for targeting solution to make use of longer range of most missiles at lower altitudes.
As for the 47 of 48 kills and are they ss good IRL, I can only say that they had much more time to get this system where it should be. The Patriots fired in Gulf war were upgraded with new waveguides in 6 weeks to be deployed and I don't know if they got to do anything else to it.
Didn’t it have a clock drift issue?
@@dmacpher I don't know, the defense projects I worked in all had magnetic/non magnetic widgets of various recipes in common.
@@dmacpher yeah. They had to reset the system every 24 hours due to a glitch in the clock causing the radar to look at the wrong angle when going from search to track modes. They fixed it shortly after the gulf war though.
@@thekikendallsautoandrandom1271 Ok well that makes sense as the first batch was rushed for Israel to have something to fight with, flaws be darned. They hoped it would work out and it did.
Scary stuff and you didn't even have manpads lurking around the river banks and forest lines to make it virtually impossible.

Very nice and interesting I’m sure the Russians appreciate all the things you have taught them on how to beat these defenses.
if you select weapons in the A10 though DSMS you will get a default profile. It's better to plan your attack and create a profile and switch to it with DMS in any master mode other than gun and a2a

I think the modern Patriot systems can use AWACS targeting data. Not sure how effective flying low like that would be with an AWACS on spotting duties for that patriot system.
Agree but sadly not yet possible in game.
@@grimreapers Maybe someday it will. Keep up the good content!
@@grimreapers I read they are putting 8 launchers in each system so that’d be 32 IRIS-T
Those IRIS-2s going up make me think of a police dog going after a bad guy!!!

What about the KH47? If they use the Tactical nuke (god forbid) it's coming on one of those. And yes! The Frog hitting the wires video is unbelievable! the guy on the radio sounds like DCS Russian ground crew.
makes me wonder how the old cold war era US missiles like the Nike series would do, accuracy might not be good but it also had a 40kt warhead to compensate for that. one missile could take out the whole swarm.
These nuclear tipped missiles tended to use smaller warheads the closer they were to detainate to the population they were protecting. Spartan was 1 Megaton and designed to melt the incoming warhead with x-rays in space, sprint and hibex about 20 kiloton neutron warheads to distort the nuclear material with neutron flux but minimize fallout. Genii was about 300 tons TNT equivalent. Supposedly you could stand under it when it went of at 50,000 ft.
8:00 technically a p_kill of above 1
Can you try with supersonic, hypersonic and stealth missiles instead?
Hi thank you for the very interesting video I have a question
Do the Patriots PAC-3 work also without the main radar unit i mean in an autonomous way ?
or they still need the radar unit ?
That's the wrong IRIS-T system. The germans delivered the IRIS-T SLM (bigger missiles with more range than the small standard IRIS-T SLS sweden and everyone else got) and Ukraine also got the Hensoldt 4D radar which is basically the best radar money can buy right now and not the small radar this swedish mod uses.
exactly
SLM also has 8 missiles per launcher

Hope to see later the Sky Sabre(Fully functional) :D And lets try this IRIS-T and Patriot pac-3 vs 5th gen fighters. Setup a complete SAM network of PAC-3 and IRIS-T and try to destroy the targets with 5th gen fighters and with stealth bombers. That would be interesting. Also, I would like to see what happens if you fire stealth curise missiles to the targets. Can the IRIS-T and pac-3 detect and destroy them?
Most stealth aircraft should be detectable and targetable at 20km or less. There is a Hensuldt multi-static passive radar that can track stealth aircraft and it could serve to que a active radar or electro optical sensors. We wouldn't be completely helpless against the Su-57.
The A-6 Intruder would be able to do that,.. at night,.. in a storm ;)
I do wonder how much damage to the targeted area the missile debris does with the way the patriot system works by destroying them over the targeted area from behind it .. depending on what was being attacked (thinking of oil storage etc)
Hey Cap, I don't think I've seen you look at this before. Can HARMs do effective damage to ships? Can a HARM take out a ships radar and thus cut down on the ships ability to launch surface to air missiles against incoming ASMs or aircraft? Thanks!
FWIW (though I'm not sure), I don't think DCS models damage to specific systems. i.e. The HARMs would damage the ship, but wouldn't degrade the radar in particular.
No BUT it is coming to game in future.
@@grimreapers Glad to hear it.
@@grimreapers I read a novel about modern ship combat and the supression of ships radar by forcing them to turn them off with HARMS was a huge part of the tatics. So it would be great if DCS modeled the systems.
Ships probably need a damage model first instead of the stupid hitbar system.
We need a mix of drones and cruise missile like they used
It would be cool if you would fly in a neutral jet among the missiles and film from this view... :)
These system can be easily defeated: TOT cheap drone swarm followed by a full missile strike. Game over!
yup
For those of us who aren't up to speed, what's the difference between Patriot PAC3 and NASAMS? (Considering that NASAMS are actually in-country and operational, now...)
NASAM is a system that can fire various missiles (AIM-9, IRIS-T, AMRAAM, ....).
PAC-3 is an upgrade to the Patriot system, using the MIM-104F (also confusingly called PAC-3 by the US Army).
The upgrade basically upgrades everything in the Patriot system (Communication, Radar, ...).
The NASAM was tested together with Patriot and is able to communicate with it's system.
Also NASAM was build to be extended with other systems like C-RAM, so you have a layered defense:
Patriot -> IRIS-T/AMRAAM/AIM-9 -> C-RAM (ex: Phalanx, MANTIS, ...) / Laser based defense.
Note: The mentioned C-RAM systems are examples, and have (to my knowledge), not yet been tested with NASAM
NASAMS is designed for short-medium range it can detect a target at about 120km but engage at a max range of 30-50km depending on missile. PAC3 is medium range and ABM, it will engage an aircraft at 70-80km and a ballistic missile at about 30-60km depending on version. PAC1/2 is long range air defense and will engage an aircraft at 90 & 160km respectively but will engage a ballistic missile at only 10-20km and is less effective than the smaller more nimble PAC-3 missile in the role. NASAMS uses off the shelf air-to-air AMRAAM, Sidewinder and Iris-T missiles so is much cheaper than the massive specialist PAC missiles of Patriot (Iris-T/Sidewinder $300-400k, AMRAAM $1m, PAC $3-8m).
NASAMS is mid range Defense so the longe range system can focus on a higher envelope and not get overwhelmed also it should have point defense systems like Gepards and C-RAM and lasers to help prevent any gaps being exploited
Thank you all for the clarification, and for doing it without making me feel like an idiot for asking. Not everyone on YT manages that well...
Have you heard about laser dome that is being developed?
Neg
IRIS T - nice technology from germany :)
Actually insanely expensive technology and with a ridiculous bad range.
You simply can't effort the masses needed to actually make it work and easily countered by cheap drones.
I think it's the SAAB Giraffe radar.
Giraffe is a family of radars
@@AdurianJ I think it is a corps or a tower of giraffes not a family.
Hey CAP, how do you get the MiG-29S to takeoff from a carrier in place of the MiG-29K?
There's a few lines you got to edit in the core game Mig-29 LUA in "core mods" folder. TBH I wouldn't advise it.
@@grimreapers ok thanks! Does it mess up the aircraft, like putting su-33 avionics or something?
Cap, have guy's tried the Iron Dome System yet?
Can't get it working :(
Can you fly slow enough to get inside the filter clutter?
yes but hard not to hit trees etc.
Is there a download link or sth to the SAMs?
[Cap]: "Get another one. 🙄"
😄😁😆😅😂🤣
As someone who has shot down cruise missiles with both the pac 3 patriot and the iris-T I can say with 100% certainty that I am full of shit.
Are you a Soldier?
@@fqeagles21 Pilot.
@@BigLug01 Awesome, next year i'll do PPL
@@fqeagles21 Oh, cool. Getting mine was probably the most amazing experience of my life.
wondering how a swarm of drones would do?
Can you please give mods links with the videos ? That'd be really appreciable.
The iris-T was reported to have 100% effectiveness in the real world scenario that happened recently in Ukraine. It could be inaccurate reporting but was speculated to be the case from official statements
I’m the 73rd comment on this page, just wanted to make that clear to everyone, but cap! Been watching videos of the GR for quite some time, there getting better by the day, always looking forward to see what’s next.
SIIIIIIIMMMMMBBBBBAAAAAA!!! 🤘🏼
rrrrrrrryyyyyyyaaaaannnnnn
I wonder if you could develope a very long antenna for the radar. Like 100m or maybe even 300m tall to scan the suroundings. Hmm is it possible to put a radar on top of the Eiffel Tower? ;-)
Put the IRIS-T SLM closer to the target near the PAC-3 so the IRIS-T can take out the ones that get through
That’s not how layer air defence works.
Anyone got a download link for the IRIS-T and patriot?
irsi-t statistics from Ukraine: 97 missiles = 97 targets landed. Very impressive.
where did you get the iris t sls?
I wonder what would happen with KH-47 Kinzhal
PAC-3 is insane. The missile doesn't even have a warhead, it kills kinetically
....wat? 0.0
It has a HE-Frag warhead with proximity fuse in PAC-1/2, in PAC-3 the radar/maneuverability is good enough to direct it on target but it still has an explosive warhead that ejects 24 low speed tungsten darts to create a cloud of shrapnel just before impact. Its not a single body kinetic interceptor, think of it more like a shotgun blast rather than a grenade.
you're thinking of SM-3
@@watcherzero5256 oh. Right my mistake.
@@MarkoDash you are 100% right
I always like the subjects but I don’t have 30 minutes. I think 10 minute videos are the best!
Hold the towel, i was just about to have a dip in my pool followed by a chucka on FIF23 but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. The grims have arrived with another 'shoulda coulda woulda' special.
test stealth against it plz
How about the nasams system?
I like how we are usually on haha street but today we took a left turn on topical and put Russa attacking a nuclear power plant :P.
I havent watched the video yet, but arent pac-3s optimized against ballistic threats and the pac-2s still used for cruise missiles and planes?
Yeah PAC 2 GEM missiles are still used for larger air breathing targets over PAC3 but PAC3 MSE is supposed to be better able to handle advanced cruise missiles while still improving its performance against the ballistic threats it already handled.
I imagine it can intercept planes but in the video it clearly isn’t ultra amazing at hitting planes but it can do the job if necessary
@@Mystical922 True, it can hit them, but pac 2 might be more optimal. I've read that at modern pac sites they use pac 2s and 3s, each for separate threats. Not that pac 2s are useless against ballistics and pac 3s are useless against planes and low flying aircraft. Just less optimal. I'm not an expert though. I'm just reading a few news articles and some of the published info.
I mean cruise missiles are really easy for modern systems to shoot down, Patriot and Iris-T are actually way overkill
Doesn’t Iris T have 8 effeectors per ramp? Also, is it modeled that both systems share radar information/ do they even irl?
You think of Iris-T SLM. The Norwegians use the standard Iris-T
@@micdeu2892 yeah but Ukraine has IRIS T SLM
