- Q&A with Jason Beghe and Jesse Lee Soffer of CHICAGO P.D. Moderated by Kate Stanhope, The Hollywood Reporter.
At the center of “Chicago P.D.” is Detective Sgt. Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), who is at ground zero against the war on crime in Chicago. He will do ANYTHING to bring criminals to justice.
From multiple Emmy Award-winning executive producer Dick Wolf and the team behind the hit series “Chicago Fire,” ‘Chicago P.D.” is a riveting police drama about the men and women of the Chicago Police Department’s elite Intelligence Unit, combatting the city’s most heinous offenses - organized crime, drug trafficking, high profile murders and beyond.
Hand-picked as the head of the Unit is Voight, who has assembled a team of diverse detectives who share his passion, and commitment to keep the city safe. They include: Detective Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) who is more level-headed and “by the book” than his counterpart; Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), a brash young detective who previously saw active military duty in the Middle East; Halstead’s partner Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush), a former “bad girl” who turned her life around with Voight’s help; Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas), an experienced undercover detective and confidante for Voight; and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), a quick-witted cadet plucked from the police academy as Olinsky’s partner.
The Unit includes a new member in the form of Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins), a charismatic patrolman who recently was brought upstairs. Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Sean Roman (Brian Geraghty) assist with the unit but on a daily basis they work the streets as uniform patrol officers often working with intelligence whenever necessary. Desk Sgt. Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) runs a tight precinct with tough love although she lets her softer more vulnerable side shine through from time to time. - Zábava

I watch Chicago PD religiously!! I applaud the writers for the versatility of the characters. I love the action, the momentum and the love that the actors/actresses have for one another. What an AWESOME cast!!

I think they would be great if they did act together , i have always thought that they look alike but no one agreed with me so i thought about it and i realized that if they work together they would make a great brother relationship and i think what made them look alike to me is their personality

I love the Chicago universe because of this kind of dynamic between the characters and the fact that the writers make the characters multi-dimensional and aren't afraid to ditch Hollywood character stereotypes. And Jesse's Voight impression! xD pretty spot on!

Jason is amazing as Hank Voight, makes the show what it is. When it comes time for pay increase, Jason deserves whatever he asks for. Period!
What can I say ??...this interview was hands down, amazing....both Jason and Jesse completely in tune with one another and the whole thing so natural and real...Two beautiful and extremely talented actors who obviously love their job and one another and give their 110 %....

Yeah it really is. During another interview I watched Jason was saying how every episode he tried to decide how much of himself he needed to put into Voight or vice versa. Everyone is always saying how intense Jason is and I think it is true. However not intense in an intimidating way. He cares so much x
I love both of you either way you go. Jason and Jesse you are both great and wonderful. I love the show and hate when I miss it. Love you both.

When I first saw Voight in season 1 of Chicago Fire I thought there is way more to this man than what is first portrayed. I love the character and I have nothing but respect for Jason Beghe despite what others think of him and his behaviour x
To me, signs of a great actor is when he or she can portray a convincing character, opposite of their true off camera personality.
@D Monty / So very true! If an actor plays the same way different roles/characters, then he/she is NOT a genuine actor. Anyone off the street can do that, meaning portraying themselves. This is exactly the reason why Robert De Niro (a nice person) is not a good actor at all. His “acting” is always the same regardless of the role he plays. He may have been very good in one role, and it made sense then, but being yourself each and every time does not make one a good actor.

Two of my favorite characters on the show. 😍
I could listen to these 2 all day. Jesse fills in the gaps that Jason leaves and vice versa. Jason opening up about what happened to him in the months leading up to his starting in Chicago fire says a lot about him and I imagine some of his anger issues quite probably stemmed from unresolved grief..
Edit: re-watching this 10/10/22... i swear Jason's voice is deeper and more gravelly in this than it is now! X
He was in a car accident in 1992 that is why he has a raspy voice. Since he kept pulling the breathing out. He damaged his vocal cord(how he originally sound)

Watching all day Chicago pd. Ion channel. I go thru a withdrawal on a Friday no show so I have to always go on Demand.
23.54 “Cause if you’re giving them telling them what to think they’re sitting there going ....okay...but if they have they have to be involved they’re like watching ...what what... you get them more involved that way, right...” Right. Being someone who’s primarily listening it might take me several hours to watch an episode until I just put everything away and keep watching instead of thinking... okay... I missed something, let’s go over it again and then again and then maybe one more time. Now I realize it is the “not feeding” which gets my attention.
BTW, I love the interaction and the fun going on on the screen. It makes it interesting and it definitely gives me something to think about after having watched it. Thx Jason and Jesse for this enlightening interview. :-)

Hi SAG-AFTRA Foundation! It's wonderful having Jason Beghe and Jesse Lee Soffer having finished Season 4 of Chicago PD, because fundamental changes happened after Season 4. Checks against Voight were removed, then; Voight's familial obligations were lessened. Seeing how Jason Beghe has partnered with DIck Wolf to create a character who remains enraged within this cage on Chicago PD is what makes this show my favorite procedural and consistently watchable after all this time. Picasso your life :D

That Gravely Voice, Steely Stare, Wiry Figure, Economy of Words, Mild Swagger, Intensity, Directness, Terseness or Full Blown Chew Out is quite the unique character. With His Always Serious & Just Business Attitude, & Sometimes Gray Actions outside the lines from his sense of personal justice, damage control, or bartering, Jason Beghe has carved out a very memorable persona for this Series.
