/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Ok so The Last Of Us Episode 1 is now out and I'm so excited to talk about it. The first game is my favourite of all time and I've bought the ps3 version, the ps4 remaster and even the ps5 remake that released a couple of months. This is a game I've completed numerous times on grounded mode and the series is something I've been desperate to do a deep dive on.
Throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down the first episode scene by scene and talking about all the easter eggs, hidden details and what they did differently to the game. If you haven't played it then don't worry because we won't be spoiling what happens down the line as I want you to enjoy the twists and turns as much as I did on my first playthrough.
However I may need to touch upon certain things due to characters that get name dropped here but I'll only bring them up in a spoiler section at the end of the video which I'll give you a heads up on.
i'm nice like that
Now unlike the game, the series starts off in 1968. Originally we watched as Sarah woke up in her bed and ventured about the house but here they do it differently. Rather than throwing us in at the night of the outbreak we get some backstory that wasn't even filled in in the source material. The game told us very little about the virus beyond it being cause by Cordyseps which had mutated to infect humans. These real life funghi exist in the jungle and the parasite infects insects and anthropods. Beginning in 1968 though we see a tv show in which two scientists do a big theory time about what the biggest threat to humanity is.
The first one goes off about how we may have a pandemic level event that's caused by a strain of influenza. Both games were made before Covid 19 and the creative team have kinda retroactively added this into the show to comment on it I think. The scientist mentions how airplanes are a new element that will help viruses like this spread easier and later on we see several planes flying overhead as Sarah, Joel and Tommy make their escape.
They add a lot of focus to them during the car scene and actually change up how the crash happens. Originally it was caused by another car hitting them but they do a fake out in the episode and instead have plane debris causing it. - Zábava

My husband had no clue what we were about to watch. He was almost as sad as Joel when Sarah was lost.
Yawn. Another boring tv series that limp wristed leftists will pretend is good. Neat.
Half hour video on an hour episode! Let's go man!
Very nice
Troy Bakers acting when Sarah dies is flawless, but I was genuinely impressed with how close Pedro Pascal was. Glad to know he’s taking this role serious.
Pedro’s was better imo
@@couchwilly5575 troy bakers was far better but Pedro's is is good

Troy was phenomenal but Pedro is just on another level.
The 1968 scene was the perfect Intro to the show. Unexpected but still amazing and something new they add.
John Hannah looks sooo different
Couldn't disagree more. It was so stupid, suggesting climate change might cause fungi to evolve. 🤦🏻♂️That's not how evolution works, dummies. So embarrassingly stupid. Thankfully, the show got much better after that, but I really hope we don't return to that story thread.
@@kimberleymorris8052 @everyone
Episode 1, It starts in the infamous year of '68 (check out the G-community over here & Zachary K Hubbard)
We was giving the real HEAVY SPOILERS about c19 in 2016 & to be ready for the madness come 2020... & why 1968 is such an important year with a number of things that went into motion. Its a shame & pretty disgusting how these people foreshadow so much via media & the npc's are clueless with the myriads of obvious signs given EVERYWHERE via the gang, jesuit order.
You think for example Hideo with Death Stranding, you think he didn't know about c19 coming along with many major players in the media industry like Druckman? 😂 🤦🏾♂️
Yea dude I really enjoyed it. I thought I clicked on the wrong show at first lol
My only gripe with that scene was that the uptight scientist and talkshow host would’ve jeered at the other guy for suggesting “if the planet gets a little warmer.”
The prevailing popular theory of the day was that we were about to have another ice age. That was backed by the data showing that our temperatures were trending downwards, with the era of Imperial Rome being generally hotter than our era. And the Bronze Age having heights well above Rome, despite being close to the last Ice Age. Not to mention, everyone in that talkshow studio would’ve had memories of fierce blizzards, and there’s a good chance that the more uptight scientist would be arguing *for* the development of climate-warming processes (if not outright investing in them).
It’s a small complaint, but the way everyone in the room just shits their pants was the one part of the episode that showed the age of the writing team. And it showed an adherence to the least sound era of data since the middle ages, because the scientists who are actually collating climate data and building ethically-sound models (the ones who only occasionally do interviews, because they’re not seeking celebrity or ultra-wealthy backers) have something important to point out:
The world was hotter during the viking era than it is now. Melting ice is revealing Nordic farms buried in Greenland. The discoveries of this *contradicted* the climate consensus from the 50s-70s, and now goes ignored by *popular, cash-motivated* climatologists of today.
All this to say... The guy suggesting “oh, we’re fucked if the world warms up, because fungi,” would’ve been mocked. Then he might’ve quipped about closed-minded peers. The live audience would scratch their heads and laugh it off, especially the well-read.
The way they changed things up was cool, kept it the same but added nice touch. The way the old lady’s face twitched was creepy as hell
SPOILER ALERT:
SAME! The scene with them in the town and your expectation of them getting by another car while driving through the chaos only for them to avoid it and instead be hit by debris from a plane crash was really good. Expectations subverted while still maintaining the original story.
The only thing I needed - like really needed - that was missing was Sarah softly saying, “we shoulda helped them” when Joel had Tommy drive past the stranded family; I think that kind of innocent compassion in Joel dies with Sarah
Duuuude they freaking nailed that scene!!!
Best part of the episode imo

I noticed that within the television version it looks like they are hinting that the fungus outbreak occurs due to tainted flour. Notice how the neighbor is feeding his elderly mother biscuits and offers some to Joel. Joel tells his neighbor that he is on an Atkins diet. Also notice that while eating breakfast Joel, Sara and Tommy only have bacon and eggs, no toast. Later on Sara visits the neighbor after school, where she's asked her to help in baking cookies. Sara leaves shortly after the cookies were baked, thus didn't eat any. So ya, I think they made that subtle change to the television version which makes it more cool. Now we know the origins on where the infections began.
I saw this is a video elsewhere too. Some other little things that pointed out how they barely missed out on the infection, is they ran out of pancake mix that morning for breakfast. And on top of that they would’ve eaten cake that night for Joel’s birthday had Joel remembered to bring it home
@@jordankuzyanov8512 ah yes, very good observation. Awesome that you caught onto that. Also notice how the neighbor told Joel that he had to bring his mother to the hospital. Apparently she ended up being prescribed antibiotics. Remember at the beginning of the episode you had the scientists back in 68 talking about viral infections. One of them mentions these fungal infections and makes a comparison to penicillin. So maybe there is a correlation between eating the flour that is tainted with the fungus cordyceps and the penicillin. Maybe the penicillin triggers/feeds the cordyceps. it would only take a dozen people infected with the fungus, while on penicillin, to begin the domino effect. It's a simple concept but I love how they added that into the show and franchise as a whole.
Good eye.
Good catch, it does makes sense
I like that theory. Tho the dialogue in the truck implies they got it while taking her in and out of the city for hospital stuff I think
It was such a good episode

I watched it the moment it hit. I gotta say it was PHENOMENAL. It was like it’s own show while staying close to the source material. Just EPIC all the way

Gabriel Luna actually went ahead brought a PS and played both of the games. You can feel his performance is so inspired by the games. He nailed Tommy's vocal mannerisms.
I like how Ellie appreciated Joel defending her and his daughter was terrified by it. Shows how different they truly are..
Well Ellie has grown up in a harsh reality. Sarah knew her dad as her dad, and then had reality completely flipped on is head and she's watching her dad flip out and beat the shit out of people for the first time she has seen. For a kid that's a lot of change in a matter of minutes.
@@alexmoon1631 Yeah. It's like, how a kid views being taken care of, does a complete 180° in twenty years time.
I like how they follow Joel's daughter throughout the episode as the main character, getting you invested and attached to this cute nice little girl, only to have her murdered. That was good writing.

I would love to see Joel in those 20 years that passed. How everything came to be. How Joel got he’s reputation. And Tess!
Always wanted that to be a dlc or something. Feels like a huge missed opportunity imo.
Should be a prequel the last of us would be so good if they explored the first few days to weeks of the apocalypse starting from the outbreak ending 3 weeks into it in the perspective of different characters of course
@@icrywhenisleep2130 Either a prequel or Last of us part 3 should have flashbacks of Joels and ellies past when the outbreak first started
@abirsharma82 nah I think a different set of characters is better to explore tlou was pure trash tlou is as far as the story goes
I mean that 20 years could be how they show the firefly uprising, tommy leaving joel for them, maybe he’s smuggled other people and lost them? Could be sick
They did an incredible job with making you feel connected to Sarah and Joel’s father-daughter relationship. In just one episode they managed to make you feel strong emotions when a character that we just met, dies. Outstanding acting from tommy, Joel and Sarah
I totally forgot she dies and it shocked me. I was so invested in her character 😂
The Adlers grandmother wasn’t infected because she went to the hospital (future show spoilers ahead); Joel mentions to Ellie that the early infection spread through tainted yeast [edit: flour, not yeast]. The Adlers were feeding the grandmother bread/biscuits earlier in the episode, and even offered it to Sarah.
Makes sense! Far more sense than the hospital angle. That didnt add up for me. But then it also adds a new wrinkle with how did the fungus spread and so quickly, all at once.
Like we hear about it happening in Jakarta. Then we see the arabic shopkeepers in on the event. And we see Sarahs classmate with the jitters. Not sure there really is a plausible explanation for how it could actually spread globally, all at the same time, everywhere at once though.
That same yeast would have gotten Joel, and Sarah, but they ended up not making pancakes. They had eggs and bacon instead
@@wheezyproduct Pancakes don't have yeast.
I think in this series, they're saying it's grain/wheat rather than yeast; they mentioned ergot in the beginning, which has roots in a theory that the Salem with trials were fueled by paranoid delusions/hallucinations caused by ergot tainted grain.
Also, the only other person we visually see expressing symptoms is a young boy wearing a medical alert bracelet. What does he and the grandma have in common? They might both have weakened immune systems which opens them up go infection (especially fungus infections which are much less common in healthy individuals).
The only explanation for Jakarta I can think of is either a) because that's where cordyceps millitaris (the specific fungus that infects the ants and insects) is native to or b) they had the tainted grain first/shipped it out (I'll be honest, I know more about medicine and mycology than I do Indonesia and their farming practices)
@@clarkkent7973 it was in the flour in the mix I think? Saw it on reddit about a interview Pedro Pascal did
I'm glad the "drugs. i sell hardcore drugs" line managed to find its way to the show
Me too! Such a nice lighthearted moment in both depictions.
I honestly am very grateful my favorite videogame had one of the best opening episodes for a tv show adaptation, its so damn good. My only gripe is that some of the dialogue feels too rushed, however it makes sense that Joel would be very short with Ellie anyway given their situation. Never thought it would be as great as it was.
Less is more. Its like a comic book movie adaptation for Superman, Spiderman, Batman, etc. We know Uncle Ben died, we know the Waynes got mugged, we know you're from Krypton. Heard the story a million times already, just get to the point in your "new retelling" of the iconic character.
Its a zombie apocalypse. We get it. Less is more so that you can actually go over things the audience needs to know within the time you have to tell a story. We really dont need a 10 minute recap of what we already know as an audience. Thats why they did what they did in some parts and, frankly, its the right call.
*cries in Halo*
I'm so glad they've maintained Joel's dead inside secondary character to Ellie's sarcastic snarky self. Pedro Pascal is a perfect babysitter actor in both this and Mandalorian.
Pascal is S tier actor i never doubt him
Pedro pascal the babysitter
He’s terrible in mando, but he’s great in everything else
Pedro Pascal was an amazing cast and Ellie’s cast was great too. I can see myself loving their chemistry

Honestly I really liked it. I don't mind the changes either. It's nice to see the story told in a different way. We'll still always have the games in the end anyways. But I am very impressed.

This week my brother and I sat down with our mom to watch this, and we got to do the same thing to her 😅 Funny how things come back around.
I believe that the child that is killed at 18:19 is immune similar to Ellie. Ellie is later seen to test positive but she is not infected. Killing this child shows how quickly they'd disregard Ellie, and the hope she represents, if she was discovered.
I watched *that* scene probably a dozen times tonight. Some of the best, most heart-wrenching acting I’ve seen in a LONG time.

Also it's crazy how Pedro Pascal looks so much like Joel in certain scenes and how Gabriel Luna sounds exactly like Tommy
There's one thing that I particularly liked about the scene where Sarah is in the watch shop. You see two police cars pass, which is fairly normal. You then see a firetruck pass, which is normal as well. I was expecting to see an ambulance next, but nope... It was SWAT.

The planes and plane crashing was terrifying yet amazing
Theorytime: sarah was infected all along due to her frequent visits to her neighbors and exposure to the old lady but it manifested sooner in the old woman due to her feebleness.
Also when trying to make sense of how her neighbors became infected, you can see sarah tremble when she ponders how frequently they possibly had to visit the hospital in order to catch it.
This is reflected later in the episode when just after joel brutaly murders the gaurd arresting them and they find out ellie is already infected. For a split second before she reveals she is immune, he realizes no matter what he couldnt have saved her. Hinting the same fate was true for sarah.
Nah she didn't she nearly get infected though when The Adler offered her some cookies but it had raisin in it which she dislike so she didn't take it with her (not to mention Joel forgot to bought a cake)

Brilliant breakdown, in perpetuity 👍🏼 Love the show
That poor boy that walks into 2023 Boston (trekking from who knows where and for how long) and collapses, only to be killed because he is infected. What if he was also immune like Ellie? How many possible immune people where put to death?

There likely weren't any documented cases of immunity before Ellie and wouldn't have any reason to assume the kid was something other than infected. That's why even the Fireflies locked Ellie up and didn't believe her at first.
I think the coffee cup Joel is drinking from in the breakfast scene is similar to the mug he's sipping coffee from in the TLOU2 conversation with Ellie.
Love the comparison parts keep doin that 🔥🔥🔥
I like that Ellie in TLOU2 says Joel watched the Viper 4 movie in theatre, and in the show Joel stands next to a poster for that very same movie. So many awesome details

I think the changes they made are so subtle or fit the show perfectly. Like His PTSD flashback on the soldier was amazing. Small enough that it doesn't change the story at all but is a nice twist on what we all have seen 👍
see you next week this was great
I have never played the games before and knew nothing about them besides the main characters names and the clickers (well what they look like mainly) going into this, so watching this was a crazy experience and I loved every second of it. Actually I'm glad I went into this blind I feel it really enhanced the experience as opposed as to going in knowing most of the beats of the story. Anyway thanks for all the breakdowns and videos over the years, massive fan of the channel. Can't wait for the rest of the show.
I Played the TLOU on playstaion and knew about Sarah's death, but my God it still hurt like hell to wacth joel lose his daughter in a blink of an eye 😞
The day after his birthday too
It twas a great pilot. Well done to the crew and very impressive and surprising performances across the board. HBO has another GEM on their hands. Tuning in for the entire season! Cheers.
Thanks for the info
Really enjoyed the series opener. Great start so far
Pedro pascal killing it with all the father roles
Except mando.
Banger of a season premiere. They are nailing this and hope they continue to stay true to the games.
Aye something I don’t know if you missed ? Or over looked , there’s a part where Joel and tess are sneaking into the fireflies base and tess says “it’s like somone but a piano behind this “ nearly sure this is referring to how Joel and tess begin there journey to leave , they move this big owl piano to enter the tunnels ,keep up the great work can’t wait for next weeks breakdown ‘
I was impressed by the first ep. Followed the gameplay storyline for almost all of it!
So far loved it amazing work the first scene where Sarah and Joel living there life was fun to watch then suddenly chaos takes over all hell breaks loses the acting everything was just amazing had doubts on how they would screw up the show I was wrong so far am looking forward to more episodes
I laughed at “unalived himself” haha. Great video mate keep ‘em comming 😊
Disappointed in CZcams for potentially demonitizing over something silly like this.
Yeah you even mention the S word and it’s an instant limited ads icon and they send you an email asking if you’re ok as they’ve noticed disturbing topics in your latest video
I've watched a few different breakdowns and reviews of this first episode. And I have yet to hear anybody actually mention the further evolved infected that is shown in the episode. I would push to say it is the fully evolved but not yet the bloater. You actually get to see one in the very first episode. I heard you mention the scream you here at the end of the episode from one of the infected. At that exact moment you lie will see if you look very closely one of them kind of glowing running up onto the rooftops as the lightning strikes with the image of Ellie and them walking off into the city. If I'm correct he is on the left set of rooftops about mid-frame. Haven't heard anybody mention it yet so I was thinking maybe I was one of the first to see it and had to boost my super coolness... LOL. Lov the ch. Thx for the effort.
great to have you back on the case mate! I'd been missing THEORY TIME, Theory Time, theory time... 🤣
I kept myself very very far away from news about this adaptation before watching it, so I totally missed most of the casting, and I laughed very much when I saw Anna Torv playing Tess while I'm actually bingewatching Fringe.
More hilariously, they also share the setting since the series starts in Boston where Fringe main setting was.
I need to catch up on this series, looks good!
Loved the games, loved the new pilot last night, and loved this video!
